The Lady Mayoress visited the head-quarters of the London Rifle Brigade on Saturday last , for the purpose of distributing the regimental and other prizes among the successful marksmen . The Duke and Duchess of York have returned to York Cottage , Sandringham , from their visit to Bro . Lord and

Lady Amherst of Hackney , and on Saturday last were joined by the Duke and Duchess of Teck . The Owl Club had a Ladies' Night in the Great Hall of the City Terminus Hotel , Cannon-street , on Monday evening . There was a capital attendance and an excellent programme , which was carried out most successfully .

The Right Hon . A . J . Balfour , M . P ., has been confined to his house for some days past by an attack of influenza , but he is reported to be going on most favourably , and will no doubt be able to resume his Parliamentary duties at an early date .

Duke Alfred of Saxe-Coburg returned to town on Sunday afternoon from Windsor Castle , where he had been on a visit to the Queen , and is now on his way to join the Duchess at Coburg , where it is expected they will continue to reside for some time .

Princess Christian , accompanied by her daughter , Princess Aribert of Anhalt Dessan , opened the handsome new library which has recently been erected in the Walworth-road by the Parish of St . Mary , Newington , at a cost of about £ 17 , 000 .

'The Archbishop of Canterbury , during his recent visit to Bro . Lord and Lady Wantaceat Lockinge House , Berks , look the opportunity of inspecting the statue of Alfred the Great , which stands in the Market-place of Wantage , the birth-place of that illustrious monarch . The remains of the late Lady Henniker were interred in the family vault at Thornham Magna , Suffolk , on Saturday

last , among the mourners being Bro . Lord Henniker , husband of the deceased lady , the Hon . E . and the Hon . E . M . Henniker-Major , and other members of the family . The Prince of Wales , having concluded his visit to Bro . Lord Suffield at Gunton Park , returned to Sandringham on Saturday last , where he was joined by the Russian Ambassador and Madame and Mdlle . de Staal , Bro . Lord

and Lady Randolph Churchill , and the Rev . E . Sheppard . The Earl of El g in , the newly appointed Viceroy of India , arrived on a visit to the Queen at Windsor Castle , on Saturday evening last . His lordship dined vvith her Majesty , and stayed for the night at the Castle , where he was joined the following day by the Countess of Elgin , who had also been invited .

Bro . J . Mowlem Burt presided at a livery dinner of thc Loiiners' Company on Tuesday , the 19 th ult ., at the Cannon-street Hotel . There was a large company of guests , including the Lord Mayor , Bro . Alderman Tyler , and Bros . Aldermen Moore and Dimsdale .

A performance cf the late Michael Balfe's " Bohemian Girl" was given at Drury Lane Theatre , on Monday , it being the 50 th anniversary of its production , the first performance having taken place at the same theatre on the 27 th November , 1843 . The house was crowded in every part , and Bro . Sir Augustus Harris had provided a most efficient cast , so that the opera went well throughout , and was from time to time vociferously applauded .

It appears that the excessive rains of Saturday last have caused a considerable amount of damage to the Manchester Ship Canal , water from the upper reaches of thc Mersey and Irvvell overflowing the sluices between Warrington and Runcorn . On Sunday morning last the vyater rose from 15 feet to 40 feet , making serious breaches in the embankment between La chford and Runcorn , and giving the country the appearance of a huge lake . The gap is about Co feet wide .

Bro . the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn left Lambton Castle at the conclusion of their visit to Bro . the Earl of Durham on Saturday last , and on Monday they went on a visit to the Marchioness of Blandford and the Duke of Marlborough , in order to be present at the festivities in

connection with the coming of age of the latter . The Duke completed his 20 th year in November , 1 S 92 , but the then recent death of his father rendered necessary a postponement of the festivities in connection with the attainment of his majority .

Earl of Lathom , to hold an investiture of the Order at the meeting of thc National Great Priory on the Sth inst ., when the newly-appointed Knights Grand Crosses and Knights Commanders will be invested vvith the insignia of their rank .

At the National Cycle Show at the Crystal Palace , which opens to-day ( Friday ) , a prominent position will be occupied by the Juno Cycles , which appear to be rapidly coming to the front . Upwards of 20 of these machines of the Metropolitan Machinists' Company ' s 1 S 94 patterns will be on view , among which are a light Juno roadster safety , weghing the marvellously light weight of only 24 lbs . ; a

Juno road racer , 20 lbs . ; a Juno lady ' s saftty , of very neat and pretty build , and provided with an admirable dressguard , which should recommend it to all lady riders ; a Juno military safety , for either soldier or sportsman . We understand that cjcling is decidedly on ihe increase not only at home , but abroad , there being hardly a district in the

world , where the roads are tolerable , to which the Juno has not been exported during iSy 3 . 'To the lar East , India , China , and Japan , at thc . Cape , in the West Indies , it is well known to riders as a sound and reliable mount , besides in various place-son the Continent of Europe . Incidentally we may mention that the total value of cycles exported during 1893 , as shown by the Customs' returns , approaches a million sterling .

We find the following announcement in the columns of the Brighton Gazette and Sussex Telegraph : "We are very pleased to announce , for the information of the Craft , that the worthy and much esteemed Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , Bro . James M . McLeod , will , on Tuesday next , the 5 th December , lead to the altar the accomplished MissS . Bonner , of Tunbridge Wells , the nuptial ceremony to take place in the latter fashionable

town , and whereat there will be a large gathering of Masonic brethren . " We share the pleasure of our contemporary in giving publicity to the announcement , and would like in addition to offer our congratulations and best wishes to the happy pair . Bro . Lord Herschell ( Lord Chancellor ) has given orders that the County Courts may be closed on the 22 nd , 23 rd , and 26 th inst ., that is to say from Friday to Tuesday , both inclusive .

The bazaar which was recently opened at Glasgow in aid of the Hospital for Incurables at Broomhall , and remained open for four days , has resulted in the raising of the sum of £ 11 . 000 for that excellent Institution .. The Duke of Connaught has announced that a new company to be composed of men of the 2 nd Devonshire , 2 nd East Kent , and 2 nd North Staffordshire Regiments will

Spencer Walpole , the new Secretary of the General Post Office , made his first appearance in that capacity on Wednesday at a dinner given at Freemasons' Tavern by the conductors of "The Post Office Magazine . " The dinner was representative of the whole of the General Post Office .

The action brought by M . Guffanti against the Empire Palace Company for alleged damage to the Monte Carlo Hotel , in consequence of vibration caused by working their electric engines , has resulted in favour of the Empire Palace Company on every point . All costs to be paid by M . Guffanti .

The services rendered by Bro . Henry Lovegrove , as honorary judge and lecturer at working men ' s clubs in South London , have been recognised by his election as President of ihe Peckham Fanciers' Association , and Vice-President of the New Leghorn Club recently formed at the Crystal Palace Poultry Show .

A meeting of the Fishmongers' and Poulterers' Institution was held on Thursday , the 23 rd ult ., for the election of three pensioners of £ 20 a year each . To each of the four unsuccessful candidates was given a gratuity of £ 2 2 S . In the event of a vacancy occurring before next June , the candidate first on thc list will succeed to it without another election . Bro . J . Larkin , Chairman , presided at the meeting .

Major-General Lord Methuen , commanding the Home District , distributed the prizes won by the successful shots of the West London ( 4 th Middlesex ) Rifles , at their headquarters , Abingdon Villas , Kensington , on Saturday evening , among those present being General Lord Chelmsford , honorary colonel of the regiment . The principal prize was the Da ily Telegraph Cup , which was won by a team of the regiment under Capt . A . Sutherland Harris , at the meeting of the National Rifle Association at Bisley , in the past

summer . A new and original grand dramatic ballet in four tableaux , entitled " Don Quixote , " will be produced at the Alhambra Theatre on Monday , the nth inst . It is adapted by Mr . Athol Mayhew , the dances and action being invented and

ar-anged by Signor Casati , and the music specially composed by M . Georges J acob ! . A strong company of artistes has been engaged . 'The characters of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza , it is stated , have been faithfully modelled after Gustave Dore ' s famous pictures , and the story of Cervantes' immortal work has been adhered to with fidelity .

Major-General Lord Methuen having in view the possible advance on London of an enemy coming by way of Croydon , and having posted an imaginary army in Battersea Park , sent out Lord Falmouth with three battalions of the Guards to cover this force . It was capital marching weather , and , between 10 and 11 on Thursday , the long thoroughfare that runs from the Brighton-road at Streatham through Norwood , and over Crown-hill , Central-hill , Gipsy-hill , and

Westowhill , past the Crystal Palace , down to Sydenham-hill station , was all alive with the scarlet coats and bearskins , having just a few of the Sth Hussars to help in keeping the touch of the several columns , while all the roads southward were patrolled by guardsmen and cavalry scouts . Lord Methuen is carrying out the principle that the defence of London should be an idea rendered thoroughly familiar to officers and men quartered in the metropolis .

Princess Christian , who was accompanied by Prince Christian , visited the Royal School of Art Needlework , South Kensington , of which she is President , to receive purses in aid of the fund for the new building which is to be erected hard by the Imperial Institute . Her Royal Highness was received by Lady Elcho ( President of the associates of the school ) and Miss Wade , the manageress , and among others present were Lady Dallas , the Hon . Mrs .

Murray Smith , the Hon . Constance Hamilton-Russell , and Mrs . Culme-Seymour . The contributions , which amounted to over £ 150 , were presented in blue art linen purses made at the schools , and the Princess , in thanking the donors , said she hoped their example would stimulate others to help forward an institution of which she was very proud . The school is at present filled-with artistic and useful exhibits , suitable for gilts and Christmas presents .

D ., delivered a lecture at Torquay last week on " The Reading Room of the British Museum , " a subject which was treated by our erudite brother with much ability .

The " Life of Pleasure , " which has had such a successful run at Drury Lane , will be transferred on Monday , the nth inst ., to the Royal Princesses Theatre , Oxford-street , to enable the necessary preparations to be made for the Christmas pantomime , "Robinson Crusoe . "

A meeting of the Cordwainer Ward Lodge , No . 2241 was held at the Cannon-street Hotel on Wednesday , the 15 th ult . Bro . J . Robertson Reep , W . M ., presided and was assisted by Bros . F . W . Potter , S . W . ; Greening-, ' J . W . 5 H . Lovegrove , Sec . ; Pimbury , J . D . ; and Soper , I . G . Bro . Bauer was passed to the Second Degree .

We regret to announce the death of Bro . Sir Archibald Orr-Evving , Bart ., at his residence , Ballikenrain , near Glasgow . The deceased was born in 1 S 1 S , and had sat in the House of Commons for Dumbartonshire from 1 S 6 S to 1 S 92 . He is succeeded by his son William , who was born in 1 S 4 S , and is a Captain in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders .

A letter , posted three months ago at Stockwell , for Hamp . stead , got inside fa nevyspaper addressed to the manage r of a gold mine in Swaziland , and remained there until the paper was opened at its destination . The letter was reenclosed , and yesterday handed to the firm whose address the envolope _ bore . The distance betwen Stockwell and Hampstead included a voyage of some 15 , 000 miles .

Bro . Lord Roberts , in an address he delivered to the Lincolnshire Artillery Volunteers at Grimsby , on Monday evening , said it was necessary our principal ports and harbours should be properly protected by fortifications , guns , and submarine mines , and that it would be the duty of the volunteer artillery to man the guns in conjunction with the regular forces and the militia .

On Saturday , the 18 th ult ., the' foundation-stone of the Titwood Established Church , PollnkshieMs , Glasgow , was laid with Masonic honours by Lord Blythswood . The church is at the corner of Glencairn Drive and Leslie-road , will cost about £ 10 , 000 , and accommodation will be provided for over 1000 persons . Designed in the 15 th century style , the structure is cruciform in plan .

MASONIC BALI , CLECKIIEVTO *** . —On Friday night the second annual ball of the Zetland Lodge was held at the Town Hall , Cleckheaton , which had been splendidly decorated and furnished . The M . C . ' s were Bros . James Clough and T . S . Dawson ; and the Stewards were Bros . S . Law , F . Law , S . H . Stocks , H . Waddington , W . Agar , J . Birkhead , F . Hirst , S . Halliday , R . B . Hartley , and F . Newsome . Robinson's band furnished the music .

The Canadian mammoth cheese has been shipped by the Dominion Government on board the s . s . Laurentian , of the Allan Line , which is expected to arrive at Liverpool about the 29 th inst . The American papers state that this gigantic cheese was one of the most attractive hits at the World ' s Fair Exhibition , Chicago . It weighs something like 24 , 000 25 , 000 lbs . ( nearly 12 tons ) , and it has been shipped tc Lipton , the well-known tea and provision merchant , who will , we understand , exhibit it throughout the country .

ROYAL AQUARIUM , WESTMINSTER . —The National Chrysanthemum Society will hold its last show of the year on Tuesday , Wednesday , and Thursday next , December 6 th , 7 th , and Sth . The society this year has achieved phenomenal success—its last display havingibeen pronounced the finest ever held . Next week , in addition to the ever popular chrysanthemum , Christmas flowering , and berried plants will be on view , and , altogether , an exceptional December show may be anticipated .

The Committee of the Masonic ball—which is to be held in the Town Hall on January 9 th—met on Friday last , at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Liverpool , under the presidency of Bro . T . H . W . Walker , P . P . G . Treasurer . The catering for the ball was placed in the able hands of Bro .

Thomas Wood of Bold-street , and the music entrusted to Bro . George Eyton . Bro . H . M . Molyneux , P . P . G . D ., will again be M . C—a post he has held a great many years . _ A large number of Stewards were nominated , and , judging by the activity of the members of the Committee , the ball seems likely to be a most successful and enjoyable re-union .

The Royal Amateur Orchestral Society gave its first smoking concert during the present season at the Queen ' s Hall , Langham-place , on Monday evening , among those present being the Prince ot Wales , the Duke of Connaught , Prince Victor of Hohenlohe , Bro . the Duke of Fife , Bro .

We regret to announce the death of Bro . Sir Archibald Orr-Evving , Bart ., at his residence , Ballikenrain , near Glasgow . The deceased was born in 1 S 1 S , and had sat in the House of Commons for Dumbartonshire from 1 S 6 S to 1 S 92 . He is succeeded by his son William , who was born in 1 S 4 S , and is a Captain in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders .

A letter , posted three months ago at Stockwell , for Hamp . stead , got inside fa nevyspaper addressed to the manage r of a gold mine in Swaziland , and remained there until the paper was opened at its destination . The Canadian mammoth cheese has been shipped by the Dominion Government on board the s . s . Laurentian , of the Allan Line , which is expected to arrive at Liverpool about the 29 th inst . The American papers state that this gigantic cheese was one of the most attractive hits at the World ' s Fair Exhibition , Chicago . It weighs something like 24 , 000 25 , 000 lbs . ( nearly 12 tons ) , and it has been shipped tc Lipton , the well-known tea and provision merchant , who will , we understand , exhibit it throughout the country .

ROYAL AQUARIUM , WESTMINSTER . —The National Chrysanthemum Society will hold its last show of the year on Tuesday , Wednesday , and Thursday next , December 6 th , 7 th , and Sth .
