and he hoped at the next meeting of the lodge they would elect him as one of their number . The l . P . M . had enabled him to be present that evening , and he could not say vvith what satisfaction he had enjoyed the ceremonies , which had been carried out in a manner which would be difficult to match .

Bro . the Rev . J . H . Rose , I . P . M ., next weilded the gavel , and asked the brethren to drink to "The Health of the W . M . " They had known Bro . Speller in that lodge to be of good repute , and Shakespeare , if he was a Mason , must have had someone like the W . M . in his mind when he

said"A man of good repute , carriage , bearing , and estimation . " They _ were not taking a leap in the dark when they put him in the chair , and if it was possible for a Master to make his year a successful one , Bro . Speller would do it . He was genial , kind , hearty , and Charitable . He had all the essences of a good Mason in him , and when they wished him a successful year of office they must all put

their shoulders to the wheel , and do all they could to help him to make it a successful and prosperous one . He could perform the ceremonies with perfection , ' and all that was wanted was the opportunity to do them , and Bro . Speller would not disappoint them . The toast having been very enthusiastically received , The W . M ., in a short and pithy replysaid : I hardly

, know how to thank you , brethren , for the enthusiastic way in which you have received the toast of the W . M ., or for the kind words which have been uttered by the l . P . M . I can assure you this is one of the pleasantest days in my life , and I thank you for conferring on me the highest honour a lodge can give . I shall do my utmost to carry out the duties , and at the end of the year I think I shall hand over

the warrant as I have received it to-night . In proposing the toast of "The Initiate , " the W . M . said when he was informed recently that it would be his privilege to initiate Bro . Bishop he was more than delighted , as he had known him for many years and was quite unaware that he was going to join the Crusaders . He was a man of sterling worth and integrity and would do honour to his

proposer and seconder . Bro . Bishop said he was very much struck with thc impressive ceremony , and it would be his aim to carry out his duties as a Mason in their entirety . The Worshipful Master next proposed the toast of " The Installing Master , the l . P . M . " He said the impressive way in which Bro . the Rev . J . H . Rose performed the ceremony

of installation would make a lasting impression , and every one would agree that he had distinguished himself . He had had to work very hard during his year of office and on several occasions he had had to perform the ceremonies of initiation , passing , and raising on one evening . He had been called away from London to Sheffield in the morning but had returned in the evening in time for the opening of the lod

ge to carry out his Masonic duties . He was in every respect worthy of the jewel which he was about to present to him . It was a great pleasure to do so and he hoped he would have health and strength for many years to come . Bro . the Rev . J . H . Rose responded , and said he heartily wished he deserved all the W . M . had said of him . After alluding at some length at the pleasure it had afforded him

to install theW . M ., the l . P . M . directed the attention of the brethren to the toast of the Masonic Charities . He did not in the least see why they should not enjoy the good things of this life , but he should not rejoice in the prosperity of the Crusaders Lodge if it had not that characteristic of Freemasonry—Charity . Bro . Terry , Sec . R . M . B . L , in an eloquent reply , urged the claims which the whole of the Institutions had upon the

brethren , and exhorted them to contribute freely to that good cause which all Freemasons had at heart . The other toasts were ** The Visitors , " "The Past Masters of the Lodge , " "The Treasurer and Secretary , " and " The Officers of the Lodge , " and a most pleasant evening was brought to a close by the Tyler's toast .

During the proceedings a charming selection of music was given by Bro . Egbert Roberts , P . M ., P . P . G . O . Essex , assisted by Bro . Ricnard Evans , Miss Henriette Nicholson , and Miss Emily Foxcroft . A portrait of Bro . Speller will appear in our Gallery of Worshipful Masters next week .

Anderson and G . Wingrave , which proved in their favour . Bro . Alfred C . Goodinge , S . W ., was then presented by the D . C , Bro . G . T . Goodincre . for the benefit of installation .

which ceremony was performed in a most perfect and impressive manner by the retiring Master , and Bro . A . C . Goodinge was duly placed in the chair of K . S . The W . was deeply sorry to inform the brethren that in consequence of the continued illness of Bro . Nelson , he was unable to invest him as I . G . The newly-invested W . lation performed in a better manner , and he paid a very high compliment to the W . M . for the most efficient and impressive way in which the ceremony of initiation was worked . Bro . Gabriel , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " stated that it was a great pleasure to him to have the privilege of giving that toast , more particularly as the W . M . was the third member of the same

family who had his banner on the wall of the lodge . That fact was of itself unique , at least so far as the Clapham Lodge was concerned . The W . M ., in replying , thanked the brethren for the kind and cordial manner in which they had received the toast , and felt particularly indebted to Bro . Gabriel for speaking of him in such flattering terms , and trusted that the kind remarks would be fulfilled , and that the

same kind feelings would be extended to him at the end of his year of office . He said it seemed hardly credible to him that only four years ago that evening he , together with the l . P . M . and S . W ., were initiated by his father , Bro . J . W . Goodinge , P . M ., and assured the brethren that they were proud to occupy the positions they held , and he hoped that , by following in the footsteps of the Masters who had preceded him , to uphold the prestige which the lodge had

always maintained in the Craft . The W . M . gave the toast of "The Visitors "—a toast always honoured in the lodge as expressive of the hearty and cordial regard they have towards the brethren who came amongst them . They were always pleased to see visitors at their meetings , and to do everything in their power to extend to them a cordial reception . .. . Bros . Hayman , Wm . Vincent , and Capt . W . E . Williams

responded . The VV . M . paid a special tribute to the l . P . M . in proposing his health , and . was proud of having the pleasure and privilege of presenting him vvith the jewel of the lodge as a slight token of respect and esteem , and to recognise the fact that the important duties had been performed by him through the year in such a perfect and courteous manner , and hoped to see him as a Past Master for many

years to come . Bro . Gabriel responded . Bro . G . T . Goodinge responded on behalf of " The Past Masters . " The W . M . gave the toast of the evening— "The Initiates . " He remarked that he had much pleasure in proposing the toast , and congratulated them on being- received into the ancient Order , and trusted that the career they had entered

upon would result in their becoming good and excellent members of the Fraternity , and honoured and distinguished ornaments to the Craft . From what he knew of the newlymade brethren convinced him that they would make good and trusty Masons , and in the names of all the members extended to them a hearty welcome . Bros . Anderson and Wingrave replied in suitable terms . Bro . Howard Smith , P . M . and Sec , responded on behalf

of " The Treasurer and Secretary . The W . M . gave "The Officers , " saying that he could congratulate the lodge in being particularly fortunate in having brethren filling the different offices who were so thoroughly conversant with all the duties . It was a matter of great pleasure to him to have them occupying those positions during his year of office , as he felt sure he could

rely on them to give him every assistance , and concluded b y saying that when a Master had good officers it relieved him of a great amount of responsibility . The musical arrangements were under the direction of Bro . Jewson , and the evening was enlivened with songs and recitations . The Tyler ' s toast closed one of the most successful evenings the lodge has had for some time .

Lodge La France ( No . 2060 ) . — On Monday , the 201 I 1 ult ., La France had a busy day . The members of the Audit Committee met at 3 . 30 to go through the accounts , and thanks to the sound principles on which the lodge was started and continued , a balance of considerably over £ 100 was reported . The lodge was opened , and Bro . E . J . N . Pouard , W . M ., passed to the Second Degree Bro . Guignon , vvho , two days before had specially come from

Bordeaux to obtain his Augmentation , de Salaire ( French term for being promoted from an apprentice to a Fellow Craft . ) The W . M . then requested Bro . St . Uair , P . M ., first initiate of the lodge , who is also S . W , of the Tuscan , No . 4 , and represents that lodge as G . S . of the year , to take the chair , and Bro . Simon was raised to the 'Third Degree , in perfect " Emulation" style ( French translation . ) In the meantime the brethren had been coming in quick

succession , so that when the installation ceremony was begun , the pretty temple of the Cafe Royal was about crowded . Among _ the company we noticed Bros . I ' ' . A . Philbrick , Q . C , G . Reg ., T . Fenn , Pres . Bd . Gen . Purps . ; F . Richardson , P . G . D . ; and G . Hopkinson , P . D . G . D . C , all members d'Honneur of the lodge ; P . A . Nairne , P . G . D ., T . Fenn , P . P . G . D . Middx ., Alderman V . Morgan , Treasurer , of Christ ' s Hospital , A . King Farlow , Master

elect , 1150 ; Summers , W . M . 1 S 20 ; and others . Bro . St . Clair , as Installing Master , requested Bro . Monteuuis , P . M ., P . G . S . B ., to take the s . W . ' s chair ; Bro . Bud . P . M ., P . G . Std . Br ., to take the J . W . ' s chair ; and Bro . F . Richardson , P . G . D ., to act as D . C Bro . Pouard , W . M ., then presented his successor , Bro . H . Testard , Master elect , for the benefit of installation . Whoever has seen Bro . St . Clair perform a ceremony , knows

that he is perfect on all points , and this proved no exception , for he acquitted himself splendidly . By a previous special requestor Bro . H . Testard , the addresses were given by Bro . T . Fenn , P . B . G . P . The new W . M . well knew how proud all the brethren of his lodge are when Bro . Fenn is kind enough to take a part in their ceremonies , and as a member expressed it to us— "Le T . Fenn , e ' est le clou de la soiree , " i . e ., " Bro . Fenn is the star of the evening , " and so he was

on this occasion . Every address was greeted vvith applause . It was pleasing also to see Bro . F . Richardson , P . G . D ., performing his not unaccustomed duties of D . C in the French language . The W . M ., Bro . H . Testard , invested his officers as follows : Bros . J . Opuenheim , S . W . ; P . F . R . Saillard , J . W . ; IL Bui * , Treas . ; E . Monteuuis , Sec . ; G . Mctzger , S . D . 3 L . Lehmann , J . D . ;

J . B . Bouyou , I . G . ; E . St . Clair , D . C ; E . Beranger , Stwd . ; and G . if . Mitchell , Tyler . The lodge having been closed , the brethren adjourned to well-merited refreshment , after their long afternoon ' s work , and here Bro . St . Clair ( we might say the indefatigable Bro . St . Clair ) was again to the fore , this time as D . c The usual toasts were duly honoured , and the various speeches distinguished by their brevity .

of absence tor six months was granted to Bro . Gjiver , J . W ., he having been obliged to go to Demerara to look alter his estates tnere , and he had asked for such leave of absence . The business of thc evening concluded vvith the presentation of founders' jewels to all tne founders of the lodge . The prrceedings of the evening were supplemented by a very nice banquet , provided in most excellent style by Bro . Allen , of the Chequers , and the customary toasts followed .

Alter honouring the loyal toasts , I ne Health of thc Worshipful Master " was proposed by Bro . Wildash , who regretted that the presence of Bio . Shurmur precluded his saying of him the many good things he so thoroughly deserved . They all regretted Bro . Shurmur's term of oiticc was drawing to a close , although in their good triend , Bro . Harris they would have the truits of the good eltocts of Bro . Shurmur . 'They were very much indebted to tiro .

Shurmur for the working of the lodge , for it was through him , and through him alone that tne ollicers were so well up to their duties . It was no task for him to come week alter week to the lodge of instruction and coach up the ollicers of the lodge . Bro . Shurmur , when the toast had been honoured , in acknowledging it said the Walthamstow Lodge ot Instruction had acquired a reputation lor good working and thc

brethren could understand the gratilication and pleasure it caused hun when the opinion was expressed tnat theoificers had that evening acquitted themselves in , a manner worthy of the distinguished President of the lodge of instruction , Bro . Philbrick , Q . C . Ashe ( Bro . Shurmur ) had been kindly selected by the , urethren to preside over the Walthamstoiv Lodge as its first Master they had a right to expect that hc would set an example worthy of imitation . If he had

succeeded he was only too delighted . Ihe Past Master s jewel voted to him was a proof that he had given tnem satisfaction . Bro . Shurmur then referred to his candidature for the office of Grand 1 reasurer of England , and said that if the brethren elected him as their ambassador to Grand Lodge he would strenuously endeavour to prove himself in every way worthy of . their confidence ; they might depend upon it that their interests in Grand Lodge

would not be neglected . Bro . Shurmur next , in very complimentary terms , proposed " The Health of Bro . Harris , W . M . Elect , " who , he said , would lead che lodge in the paths of prosperity . Bro . W . Harris , W . M . elect , in reply , said it wjuld be his humble endeavour to follow in Bro . Shurmur ' s footsteps , through whom he had learned so much . He asked all the officers and brethren to give him their best suuu i . c , and to

bring him plenty of work . When his year ol uiiice came to a close tnat time next year , he trusted he should leave it in even a better position , both financially and otherwise , than it was at present . All the initiates and the two joining members responded to the joint toast proposed in their honour . To the toast of " The Treasurer and Secretary , " Bros . Baker and Herbert responded .

Bro . Baker , P . M ., Ireas ., in the course of his remarks , informed the brethren that . he had been selected to nominate Bro . Shurmur for the office of Grand Treasurer . He at first relused when he was asked by brethren to do so , feeling himself incompetent to perform the duty properly ; but tne brethren insisted that he should , and he had to consent . Hc would nominate Bro . Shurmur , and do it as well as he could in that assembly which represented the nobility and aristrocracy oi the kingdom and the leaders of the arts and

. Bros . Orlton Cooper and Buchanan responded for " The Visitors . " All the officers vvho were present replied to the toast of " the Officer-,. " The lyler's toast closed the proceedings . 'The jewels were manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .

lation performed in a better manner , and he paid a very high compliment to the W . M . for the most efficient and impressive way in which the ceremony of initiation was worked .

G . D ., T . Fenn , P .

Fenn is the star of the evening , " and so he was

on this occasion . Every address was greeted vvith applause . It was pleasing also to see Bro . F . Richardson , P . G . D ., performing his not unaccustomed duties of D . C in the French language . The W . M ., Bro . H . Testard , invested his officers as follows : Bros . J . Opuenheim , S . W . ; P . F . R . Saillard , J . W . ; IL Bui * , Treas . ; E . Monteuuis , Sec . ; G . Mctzger , S .

Bro . If he had

succeeded he was only too delighted .
