to wear the same as a memento of their high esteem , and to be with them and help on the success of the lodge . The I . P . M ., in reply , said he hardly knew how to express himself in words sufficiently serious lo thank them for the handsome jewel , which he should always wear in happy remembrances of that evening , also of those during his year of office . The gift of the jewel showed the approval

of the brethren that he had conducted the affairs of the lodge to their satisfaction . He had made it exclusively his duty to do his best for the New Cross Lodge , and he felt that every brother connected with the lodge ought to do the same . He vvas glad he had been so successful financially , and he hoped their W . M . would have as successful a year as he had had—viz ., nine initiates . Every Mason should

have the welfare of his lodge at heart , and when his time came to go into the chair , he would feel that he had done his duty . Financially they were never better off , for now they were out of trouble and had a good balance , and he trusted all future . Masters vvould bear in mind that it was honourable to a lodge to be free . He had endeavoured to follow in the lootstepsof their worthy P . M ., Bro . G . P .

Bertini , and keep expenses down , and get out of difficulties , for it was an honour to themselves and a ct edit to the Craft . Philanthropy and Charity they could now take in hand , and would be enabled to do something which must be a pleasure to all . He thanked them all most sincerely for not only drinking his health that evening so heartily , but also for the kind manner in which his health had always

been drunk during his year of office , and he wished them all well , and success to the New Cross Lodge , with health to their W . M ., and plenty of work for him to do . The W . M . then said he had novv a most important toast to propose , and that was "The Health of thc Visitors . " They were pleased to see them , and hoped they had been made comfortable , and had had a pleasant

evening . They were all welcome , and the New Cross Lodge gave them a hearty one , and he trusted he should have the pleasure of seeing them again . There were so many visitors that it would be impossible for all to respond , as trains would not wait to take them to London , but would call upon Bros . Dr . Milner , P . M ., Bumstead , and Milbourn to reply .

Bro . Dr . Milner , P . M ., said he was assured that the visiting brethren had all enjoyed themselves much . He had known their worthy W . M . in private life many years , He congratulated him upon being W . M . of the New Cross Lodge , and he wished him a happy year of office . Bro . E . J . B . Bumstead , P . M . 548 , said it afforded him much pleasure to respond . All the visitors , he felt sure ,

had enjoyed themselves . The brethren had good reason to be proud of their W . M . He had worked hard , and no doubt would follow the good example of their I . P . M . It had been his privilege to visit the lodge before , and he must congratulate the lodge on its prosperity and financial state . He wished their W . M . a good and prosperous year of office , and thanked him also for the kind manner

in which he had received him . Bro . J . G . Millbourn , W . M . 13 , said no words of his could say what pleasure it had given him to be with them that evening . It was his first visit and he hoped it vvould not be his last . If the Fourth Degree vvas a sample of their work , all their work must be done well . He felt that their lodge must be a prosperous one , and he thanked them all

for the kind reception they had given to the visitors . The Worshipful Master , in proposing the next toast on the list , that of " The Installing Master , " said it must be a bumper . He had performed his task well , and he was sure it was to the satisfaction of all present . Bro . Cowley , P . M ., was an old P . M ., and had worked hard and well , and had the interest of the lodge at heart .

Bro . W . Cowley , P . M ., in responding , thanked all present for the kind manner in which his health had been drunk . It was most gratifying . He vvould always do his duty , no matter in what office he was placed . The P . M . 's had done their duty well , not forgetting Bro . G . P . Bertini . But he did hope , now that the chair was occupied by one of their own nationality the W . M . would install his successor .

There was a great excuse for two previous P . M . 's , who belonged to a nation where the voice was lovely , but to have asked them to install their successors would have been wrong . They would have done it , no doubt , and it was their wish , but the brethren present would agree vvith him it would have been a most difficult and trying task . All the P . M . ' s present wished the W . M . a most successful year of office ,

with good health . The Worshipful Master , in proposing "The Health of the Treasurer and Secretary , " said that the lodge was indebted to the services of both . Their Treasurer was well known toall , also their new Secretary , and he felt sure bcth would do their duty to the best of their abilities . Bro . Treasurer always looked well after the cash and the Secretary would warm well to his work . He vvould ask the brethren to drink their health in a bumper .

Bro . E . H . Thiellay , P . M ., Treas ., said he thanked a'l the brethren most sincerely for the kind and cordial manner in which his health had been proposed and drunk . He could assure the brethren of the New Cross Lodge it vvas a great pleasure to him to know and feel that the lodge was in such a prosperous condition . Great credit vvas due both to Bros . Grassi and G . P . Bertini for the great interest

they had always taken in the lodge . Both had worked well to economise , and he wished the lodge every surcess , and that he might have always a good balance in hand at the end of the session . Bro . Thos . Grummant , P . M ., Sec , assured the brethren he would do all in his power to perforin the duties of Secretary to their satisfaction , and hoped to have the confidence

of the brethren . The Worshipful Master , in proposing "The Health of the Officers , " said he felt that he had good ones , and he hoped to meet them at the lodge of instruction , so that they might be together , and work to the satisfaction of the members of the lodge . Anything they had to say he felt the brethren would be glad to hear .

Bro . J . D . Graham , S . W ., assured the W . M . he vvould do all in his power to assist him . He had known the W . M . many years , they frequently worked in lodges of instructor * , and trusted still to meet him with the other officers , so that they might work well in harmony . He thanked the W . M . for having placed him in such a high position , and

he wished the W . M . a successful year of office . Bro . John H . Meyer , J . W ., endorsed all that their S . W . had said . He would still persevere and do his work , not only to the satisfaction of the W . M ., but also to the brethren of the Iodge . poth Bros . S . D . and J . D . replied , also Bro . S . G . Mella ,

Craft Masonry.

I . G ., who assured the brethren he felt the responsibility of his office , and now they would find him a careful and serious worker . The Tyler's toast brought this most enjoyable evening to a close , and the brethren present all expressed themselves highly delighted with the musical and vocal abilities of Bro . G . P . Bertini , R . Mackway , Li Calsi , Samuelli , C .

Grassi , Danbiero , Rubinstein , Meyer , and others , not forgetting Bro . B . Bumstead with his recitation of "The Farm Ship . " In fact , the vvhole meeting was a great success , anlone to bc well remembered . The banner oi the W . M ., which was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , was of blue silk , and was an interesting feature

of the proceedings . It was beautifully embroidered with the emblazoned armorial bearings and antique shieldthe crest of the ancestors of the VV . M . It vvas his gift to the lodge . The New Cross Lodge met for the first time at the Portland Hotel , Greenwich , and all the brethren present expressed themselves delighted vvith the comfort and accommodation cf their new quarters .

S . G . Mella ,

M ., which was manufactured by Bro . of the proceedings . It was beautifully embroidered with the emblazoned armorial bearings and antique shieldthe crest of the ancestors of the VV . M . It vvas his gift to the lodge .
