The toast was drank with great heartiness , and Bro . Partington replied in appropriate language , after which he proposed " The Health of the I . P . M ., " and presented him , in the name of the lodge , with a handsomely chased gold square and problem ( manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , 47 , Bridge-street , Manchester ) . Bro . Other toasts , including "The Installing Master , " "The Visitors , " & c , were proposed and responded to , and a very pleasant evening was spent . Songs and recitations were rendered by Bros . Mort , Pennington , Wallwork , Littler , Dottie , and Lisenden .

WILLESDEN—Wharton Lodge ( No . 2045 ) . —The installation of Bro . Wm . Thomas as W . M . of the above lodge took place on Tuesday , the 21 st ult ., at the White Hart Hotel , in the presence of probably the largest assembly of brethren ever seen in the locality , many of those present being P . M . 's of some distinction in the Craft . The ceremony was performed in a very able and impressive

manner by the out-going W . M ., Bro . Stroud . The newlyinstalled W . M . invested his officers in a manner that was highly creditable to him , and which would have entirely put in the shade many a much older and experienced Mason , and which drew forth the unanimous and enthusiastic approval of the brethren present . The officers were as follows : Bros . Stroud , I . P . M . ; Bride , S . W . ; Hargrue ,

J . W . ; Side , P . M ., W . M . 13 6 4 , Treas . ; Dr . Gawith , Sec . ; Salmon , S . D . j Mostyn , J . D . ; Smith , I . G . ; Palmer , D . C ; and Townsend , Stwd . ; the Treasurer and Secretary being , of course , re-elected . Several propositions for initiation and joining members were afterwards made . During the inside working of the ceremony a little incident , perfectly unique in the history of the Craft , occurred .

When the Installing Master was deeply engaged in a solemn portion of the same , and made a momentary pause , and all was calm and quiet , suddenly the notes of the cuckoo broke forth upon the silence , to the utter astonishment and amusement of the brethren on discovering that the sound proceeded , not from the living bird of the air , but from an old-fashioned clock hanging on the wall when

striking the hour . Even the serious countenance of the W . M . was observed endeavouring to suppress a smile ; but unsuccessfully . The lodge being closed , the brethren adjourned to a magnificent banquet , in a large room elegantly decorated with drapery and the choicest of hothouse flowers , which was served up in a manner that might be imitated with very great advantage to the Craft by some of our large London hotels .

The usual Masonic toasts were proposed and received in a truly fraternal manner by all present , the toast of the evening , as a matterof course , being "The VV . M . " The proposer , the I . P . M ., said that _ he was highly gratified at being able to hand over his chair to a Master who would , he was certain , not only maintain the reputation of the lodge pure and unsullied , but by his ability and Masonic

knowledge add additional lustre to that high office . The W . M ., setting the excellent example of short speeches , replied in very appropriate and suitable terms , assuring the brethren that all " they expected of him , both in and out of the lodge , he intended to perform to the best of his ability , to their entire satisfaction , he hoped , and in the interests of the lodge and Craft

generally . The toast of" The Visitors " was responded toby several P . M . ' s . Bro . George J . Dawson , P . M . 1853 , said he felfc honoured at being invited by the W . M . to be present , as he had enjoyed the distinguished privilege of having passed and raised the VV . M ., whom he was delighted to find had made such great and rapid progress in the Craft as to entitle him to hold the proud position in which he was then placed ,

and which from his well known geniality and generosity , together with his great Masonic industry and knowledge , he would certainly fill with positive credit to himself , and to the delight and satisfaction of every member of the lodge , of which he would surely prove to be one of its best and most perfect W . M . 's . In referring to the " cuckoo " incident already mentioned , Bro . Dawson said he thought

that the early arrival of that harbinger of spring , introducing his welcome wild wood notes so long before his accustomed time , was a special favour conferred upon the W . M ., and might be looked upon as a good omen for his year of office . Among the numerous visitors were Bros . Stevens , W . M . 901 ; Chandler , P . M . 1656 ; Walker , P . M . 733 ; Idiens , P . M . 925 ; David Hughes , P . M . 901 ; Smith , P . M . 1348 ;

The musical arrangements were entrusted to Bro . Jas . Kift , and the singing generally gave the utmost satisfaction . A variety was given to the musical portion ox the

entertainment by a recital by Bro . George J . Dawson , in his usual effective manner , of Hood's beautiful and well-known poem , " The Bridge of Sighs , " which was most enthusiastically received . The Tyler ' s toast brought a most enjoyable evening and Masonic entertainment to a happy termination .

Dawson said he thought

that the early arrival of that harbinger of spring , introducing his welcome wild wood notes so long before his accustomed time , was a special favour conferred upon the W . M ., and might be looked upon as a good omen for his year of office . Among the numerous visitors were Bros . Stevens , W . M . 901 ; Chandler , P . M . 1656 ; Walker , P . M . 733 ; Idiens , P . M . 925 ; David Hughes , P . M . 901 ; Smith , P . M . 1348 ;

entertainment by a recital by Bro . George J . Dawson , in his usual effective manner , of Hood's beautiful and well-known poem , " The Bridge of Sighs , " which was most enthusiastically received . The Tyler ' s toast brought a most enjoyable evening and Masonic entertainment to a happy termination .
