of the nation ; self-seeking and vanity were strangersjto his nature , and standing truly and faithfully by his great advisers , he followed—although sometimes with a heavy heait—their trusted council . He was in the best sense of the word a self-made man , and in that , as in many other respects , a worthy example for every good Mason . After the happy ending of great wars he gave his whole attention to the development of Germany on all fields of science and art , commerce and industry . His vow that his time belonged to his country he faithfully
kept to the very end of his long life . For half a century he belonged to our Fraternity ; he always proved a true brother ; he was ever ready to lend his help to German Masonry , and was devoted to the cause with love and conviction to the day of his death . The speaker admonished his German as well as his English brethren to desist from petty jealousies and invidious paper wars , and gave expression to the hope that the time might not be far distant when all Germanic nations would be united in a common endeavour to secure the blessings of peace to all the world .
It was only right that on an occasion like this the late Emperor's great coadjutor , Prince Bismarck , should be remembered , and Bro . Dr . HARRER eloquently proposed the Prince's health . The toast of " The Visitors " was responded to by Pastor WYSARD in a speech of rare grace and impressiveness .
Altogether the festivity was one which will long be remembered by those who wi re preient , and , that nothing might be wanting to give it a true Masonic spirit , the bai quet ended with a collection , the proceeds of which , amounting to about £ TS will be devoted in this the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year to the Prince of Wales ' s Hospital Fund .
After the banquet the brethren and visitors re-assembled to an excellent concert under the conductorship of Bro . W . Ganz , P . G . O ., which kept the company together until a late hour .

PRESENTATION TO BRO . J . WHITEHEAD SMITH .
At a It dgeof emergency of the St . Cuthberga Lodge , No 622 , held recently in the Icdte rcom at the Masonic Hall , Wimborne , an interesting presentation took p lace . For many years Bro . J . Whitehead Smith , one of the oldest Past Masters , has worked most regularly as Secretary and Organist , but owing to
failing sight has relinquished his position as Organist at the Minster , which he has held for over 30 years , and will reside at Sandown ( I . W . ) . Previous to his leaving , the brethren desired to show their appreciation of his high personal qualifications and his ability as a Mason , and this they did by presenting him with a purse of £ 33 , and a very handsomely-illuminated address .
There was a large attendance of the brethren , for whom Bro . the Rev . W . MORTIMER HEATH , P . P . S . G . W . Dorset , P . G . Chap . England , made the presentation , He said : Worshipful Bro . Whitehead Smith , it is very gratifying to me that 1 have been asked by the Worshipful Master and brethren of the lodge to convey to you their sentiments of fraternal regard and affection , not only for your personal qualities , but more for the valuable services you have rendered to this lodge in
times past . These feelings no doubt are mixed with very great regret through the thought of your approaching departure from amongst us , and we shall lose your welcome presence and be deprived of that skill and ability which has marked your tenure of office in this lodge . You will leave pleasant memories behind you which will never be effaced . Most of us here have been privileged to enjoy your friendship outside the lodge and your brotherhood inside these
sacred walls , and in neither case have you been found wanting . The lodge holds a wide reputation , not only on account of the worshipful brethren who have oci upicd the chair—you among them—not only on account of the efficiency ot its officers , not only on account of the merit of all the brethren , but also from the way in which you have fulfilled the duties and carried on the work of the Secretary of the lodge , to the efficient and kind performance ot which we are all well
aware is due much of the smooth working and welfare of the lodge . But the brethren are not willing that your work should be recognised in words only , but desire and wish you to accept from them a more substantial acknowledgment with their good wishes . I therefore beg yuur acceptance of this purse containing ^ 33 , and with that the hearty good wishes and hopes of us all that you will find your cable tow sufficiently long and elastic to keep you in touch with the lodge
—wherever you are and however distant you maybe—and that many opportunities may occur for you to visit your mother lodge , where you will be sure to find a hearly welcome amongst the brethren , with and for whom in time past you have worked so zealously and so well . May the G . A . O . T . U . prosper those who are near and dear to you and have you in His keeping , that you may continue to be in the future , as you have been in times past , an example of that high ideal of Masonry—a true and perfect ashlar . ( Applause . )
Bro . A . B UODEN , W . M ., read the address as follows : " Lodge and Chapter St . Cuthberga , No . 622 , to W . Bro . J . Whitehead Smith , P . M ., P . Z . 622 , P . P . J . G . W . P . P . G . J . Dorset . We , the undermentioned members of the above lodge and chapter , beg your acceptance of the accompanying purse of money as a mark of our fraternal regard and affection and in testimony of our gratitude for the services rendered by you for so many years as Secretary , Organist , and Scribe E .
