666 ] THE OLDEST SUBSCRIBING FREEMASON . Some time ago , there was an interesting correspondence respecting the oldest Freemason . Many claimants appeared , and ultimately , I believe , an old brother at Falmouth , was accepted as the champion . The other day I heard from my friend and Bro . Dr . C . D . Hill-Drury ( Darlington ) of a Masonic veteran , whose experience , if

not unrivalled , is certainly a most exceptional one . I refer lo Bro . G . J . Wilson , of Darlington , who was initiated on April 25 th , 1 S 33 , exalted in 1 S 34 , was installed Master of the "Restoration" Lodge ( now No . m ) on December 27 th , 1 S 35 , and was again Master in 1 S 43 *"' d 18 . 14 . Bro . Wilson was appointed Prov . G . J . D . of Durham in 1 S 35 , becoming Prov . G . D . of C . from 1 S 46 to 1850 , when the

office of Prov . G . J . W . was bestowed on him in appreciation of his valuable service- ; . In the Koyal Arch our venerable companion has been through the chairs , completing such service in 1 S 50 , having been installed by the late Comp . J . Fawcett , Grand Superintendent . Bro . Wilson still takes an active interest in the Craft , is a regular subscriber and attendant in his lodge , and , though advanced in years , has

not failed to supply any information in his power respecting the early history of the ** Restoration " Lodge . We have no " Masonic Veterans' Association " in England , as there exists in llie United States . Bros . Gould , Fendelow , and myself are members of one of these excellent organisations , which assembles in Philadelphia , under the genial and fostering care of Bro . C . E . Meyer , and other well-known Pennsylvania !! Craftsmen . Mad we such a society in this

country , I venture to affirm that Uro . Wilson would be one of its chief ornaments , if not the senior of those who are subscribing members to lodges . John the Baptist's Daythe chief business of the day being the installation of Bro . Arthur S . B . Sparling , S . W ., as W . M . for the ensuing year . I'he ceremony ( by kind permission of Bro . Round , M . P . ) took place in the Library of Colchester Castle , the work

Representative of the lodge upon the Essex Provincial Charity Committee . Hearty votes of thanks were passed , and ordered to be entered on the minutes , to Bro . Osmond for so kindly and ably performing the ceremony of the day , and to Bro . Round , M . P ., for allowing the use of the Castle . In the evening between 40 and 50 brethren dined together at the Red Lion Hotel , under the presidency of the W . M .,

a capital repast being well served by Bro . Hart , the host . After dinner the usual Masonic toasts were duly honoured . In responding for the toast of his health , llie W . M . remarked that though he was admitted into Masonry in one of ourdistant Colonies , he felt that he was connected with the Angd Lrdge by very strong ties , for the records of thc

lodge showed that his grandfather was an active member in the latter part of the 18 th century . He proposed " The Installing Master , " remarking that he had invited the V . W . D . P . G . iM . to perform the ceremony , but as Bro . Philbiick ' s engagements would not peimit of his undertaking it , his old friend , Bro . Osmond , had most kindly consented to install him , and he was suie thc manner in

which it had been carried out left nothing to be desired . Bro . Osmond thanked the W . M . for his complimentary allusions . It had given him great gratification to install into the chair so old and valued a friend as himsell , and he predicted that the lodge would have a prosperous career under his rule . The toast of " The Visitors " was responded to by Bros .

The first named said , with the exception of a visit to Halifax , this was the farthest northern lodge he had visited , and it had given him great gratification to see the working of this ancient lodge . He had had the pleasure of knowing their W . M . for some years , and was glad to see him that

day placed in the proud position of W . M . of a lodge in his native town . He was quite sure the brethren would find in him a most able Master . Bro . G . Harmon , S . VV ., in replying to the toast of " Thc Charities , " made an appeal on behalf of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , at the next Festival to wiiich he himself and Bro . Sovvman were going up as Stewards . He

described the Charity as the most needy of the three great Masonic Institutions , for , although it dispensed large sums to necessitous brethren and their widows , the number of candidates yearly were far in excess of the vacancies . During the evening an excellent programme of music was carried out by Bros . Osmond , Turner , Gowers , Sparling , and A . C . Durrant , while an amusing recitation was
