in which the Installing Master had performed his duties , both during his year of office and in the ceremony just concluded , also paying- a high compliment to the late Secretary , Bro . Capt . Macnab , for his conduct and ability . The proceedings closed with the presentation to Bro . White of a valuable Past Master's jewel from the lodge , in recognition of his valuable services during his year oi office .

T he brethren and visitors then proceeded to Southport , where they sat down to an excellent dinner at the Prince of Wales Hotel , which was served in the most satisfactory manner under the personal supervision of the able and courteous manager , Bro . C . J . Wilkinson . The musical items were well rendered by Bro . A . B . Ewart , assisted by Bros . J . T . Pugmire , R . N . Hobart , A . J . Sewell , and others .

During the evening a very elegant silver salver , with tea and coffee service , suitably inscribed , was presented by the members of the lodge to Bro . White , l . P . M ., as a token of their esteem . Ihe brethren returned , having spent a most enjoyable day and evening . It may be interesting to know that the P . G . M . sent a letter ot thanks to the brethren for having re-elected him an honorary member of the lodge .

LEICESTER . —John of Gaunt Lodge ( No . 523 ) . —The annual festival and installation meeting of this time-honoured lodge was held at Freemasons' Hall , on St . John the Baptist Day , in accordance with the usual custom , when , in addition to the lodge oflicers , there was a large attendance of visiting officers and brethren . M . to be prepared , in the absence of any distinguished Mason , to instal his successor . On the proposition of Bro . F . G . Green , Sec , seconded

by Bro . the Rev . E . R . Horwood , Bro . Edmund Gowers was unanimously re-elected to represent the lodge on the Provincial Charity Committee , and he took occasion to refer to the candidature of Chas . Wm . Green , son of a late member , for admission to the Boys' Institution , for which he bespoke their earnest support . At intervals during the proceedings Bro . Osmond , P . P .

G . O ., entertained the lodge with some able performances on the valuable American organ belonging to the lodge . The brethren then adjourned to a most sumptuous banquet , at the King ' s Head Hotel , after which the usua loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured , and songs were contributed by Bros . Bird , McElwee , Ker , Gowers , Barritt , Clover , and others .

PORTLAND—Portland Lodge ( No . 1037 ) . — The usual monthly meeting of this lodge took place on Thursday afternoon , the 17 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , a fair number of members and visitors being present to open the lodge . The principal event of the day was the placing in the chair of King Solomon Bro . Richard Cox , and we are fully sure he must have been pleased to see such a

gathering of brothers from All Souls , several officers of the Fleet , and other lodges in the county , the ceremony of installing the Master being ably performed by the out going Master , Bro . G . J , Bradley , assisted by Bros . B . Morgan , Gibbs , C . F . Arden , A . Gtaham , and others . After the ceremony the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , where a bounteous supply of good things

awaited them , the tables being decorated with a profusion of roses , geraniums , fuchsias , and hothouse plants . The capabilities of the lodge must have been somewhat tried , but the Stewards , Bros . \ V . R . P . Jeffery and T . Hoskins , left no effort wanting to contribute to the comfort of all present , it being the unanimous wish that Bro . Richard Cox should have a prosperous year of oflice . The meeting

ROMFORD . —Liberty of Havering Lodge ( No . ¦ 437 ) - —T * e installation meeting of this flourishing lodge toot place at the Rising Sun Hotel , on Thursday , the 24 th ult ., when Bro . Thos . Humphreys , S . W . and VV . M . elect , was with the usual ceremony installed into the chair of K . S . The lodge was opened by Bro . VV . Burroughs , VV . M ., and the minutes having been read , Bro . Humphreys was presented to the W . M ., who , in a most impressive

manner earned out the duties of Installing Officer . The usual proclamations and salutations having been duly observed , the VV . M . invested his oflicers as follows : Bros . J . Parsons , S . Asst . D . C ; and A . G . Young , Tyler . Bro . Burroughs then gave the addresses and concluded the ceremony , for the excellence of which he received the heartiest commendations . Bro . F . A . White was then reelected representative of the lodge on the Provincial Charity Committee , and returned thanks . Bro . West proposed a vote of thanks to Bro . Burroughs , to be inscribed on the minutes of the lodge for the

admirable manner in which ne had earned out the duties of Installing Officer , and further that a testimonial inscribed on vellum of the value of five pounds be presented to him as an acknowledgment of his excellent services to , and from the lodge . In putting it , Bro . West said the fact of so young a Mason as ' Bro . Burroughs , who had only been a Mason for five years , working so well and so ably installing his successor , was unprecedented in the annals

of Freemasonry . Bro . Heasman seconded , and took credit for introducing Bro . Burroughs to the lodge , not five years ago as Bro . West said , but only four years ago . The motion was carried with acclamation , and Bro . Burroughs briefly returned thanks . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Golden Lion Hotel , Romford Market , where under

the hospitable root of Bro . Peter Reynolds , they partook of a recherche and splendidly served banquet . A prominent feature of which , was the great quantity of beautiful flowers provided by Bro . Beeson , P . M . Among the other brethren present not above enumerated were Bros . P . Beeson , P . M . ; R . J . Warren , P . M . ; G . VV . Patmore , P . M . ; W . D . Child , G . Little , R . M ., Bro . Lord iirooke , " was drunk with much enthusiasm . The Worshipful Master , in proposing the next toast that of "The D . P . G . M ., Bro . Philbrick , and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers Present and Past , " said they had

several brethren present who , as Past Officers , were in a position to respond for the toast , and they all knew the great interest taken by the Prov . Grand Master in the welfare of the province , while the Masonic lore of Bro . Philbrick _ was universally acknowledged , and those who were privileged and had attended Grand Lodge must have seen that that distinguished brother ' s decision on all matters touching important questions was always received

with the greatest respect . Bro . Manning , in response , said he had watched the career of their esteemed Prov . G . M . ever since he was installed as ruler over their province , and could safely say that he was one of thc best and most earnest workers for the good of Freemasonry they had ever had , while his subordinates , present and past , tried , and had tried , to render themselves worthy of serving under him .

Bro . White said that he agreed with every word uttered by Bro . Manning with respect to the earnest Masonry of both Bro . Lord Brooke and Bro . Philbrick , and he could assure them that it afforded him very great pleasure to attend the meetings of Grand Lodge , and see ihe admirable manner in which their Prov . G . M . and Prov . D . G . M . carried out their high and important duties , and he

sincerely hoped the brethren of that lodge would attend the next meeting at Chelmsford , in August , for he believed that if they showed a good front , the Prov . Grand Lodge meeting of next year would be held at Romford , under the banner of the Liberty of Havering Lodge . Last year at Saffron Waldon he was the only brother present to represent the lodge , but he trusted one and all would attend the

Macnab , for his conduct and ability . The proceedings closed with the presentation to Bro . White of a valuable Past Master's jewel from the lodge , in recognition of his valuable services during his year oi office .

T he brethren and visitors then proceeded to Southport , where they sat down to an excellent dinner at the Prince of Wales Hotel , which was served in the most satisfactory manner under the personal supervision of the able and courteous manager , Bro . C . J . Wilkinson . The musical items were well rendered by Bro . A . B . Ewart , assisted by Bros . J . T . Pugmire , R . N . Hobart , A . J . Sewell , and others .

During the evening a very elegant silver salver , with tea and coffee service , suitably inscribed , was presented by the members of the lodge to Bro . White , l . P . M ., as a token of their esteem . Ihe brethren returned , having spent a most enjoyable day and evening . It may be interesting to know that the P . G . M . sent a letter ot thanks to the brethren for having re-elected him an honorary member of the lodge .

G . O ., entertained the lodge with some able performances on the valuable American organ belonging to the lodge . The brethren then adjourned to a most sumptuous banquet , at the King ' s Head Hotel , after which the usua loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured , and songs were contributed by Bros . PORTLAND—Portland Lodge ( No . 1037 ) . — The usual monthly meeting of this lodge took place on Thursday afternoon , the 17 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , a fair number of members and visitors being present to open the lodge . The principal event of the day was the placing in the chair of King Solomon Bro . Richard Cox , and we are fully sure he must have been pleased to see such a

gathering of brothers from All Souls , several officers of the Fleet , and other lodges in the county , the ceremony of installing the Master being ably performed by the out going Master , Bro . G . J , Bradley , assisted by Bros . B . Morgan , Gibbs , C . F . Arden , A . Gtaham , and others . After the ceremony the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , where a bounteous supply of good things

awaited them , the tables being decorated with a profusion of roses , geraniums , fuchsias , and hothouse plants . The capabilities of the lodge must have been somewhat tried , but the Stewards , Bros . \ V . R . P . Jeffery and T . Hoskins , left no effort wanting to contribute to the comfort of all present , it being the unanimous wish that Bro . Richard Cox should have a prosperous year of oflice . The meeting

M ., and the minutes having been read , Bro . Humphreys was presented to the W . M ., who , in a most impressive

Burroughs , to be inscribed on the minutes of the lodge for the

admirable manner in which ne had earned out the duties of Installing Officer , and further that a testimonial inscribed on vellum of the value of five pounds be presented to him as an acknowledgment of his excellent services to , and from the lodge . In putting it , Bro . West said the fact of so young a Mason as ' Bro . Burroughs , who had only been a Mason for five years , working so well and so ably installing his successor , was unprecedented in the annals

of Freemasonry . Bro . Heasman seconded , and took credit for introducing Bro . Burroughs to the lodge , not five years ago as Bro . West said , but only four years ago . The motion was carried with acclamation , and Bro . Burroughs briefly returned thanks . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Golden Lion Hotel , Romford Market , where under

the hospitable root of Bro . Peter Reynolds , they partook of a recherche and splendidly served banquet . A prominent feature of which , was the great quantity of beautiful flowers provided by Bro . M ., Bro . Lord iirooke , " was drunk with much enthusiasm . The Worshipful Master , in proposing the next toast that of "The D . P . G . M ., Bro . Philbrick , and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers Present and Past , " said they had

several brethren present who , as Past Officers , were in a position to respond for the toast , and they all knew the great interest taken by the Prov . Grand Master in the welfare of the province , while the Masonic lore of Bro . Philbrick _ was universally acknowledged , and those who were privileged and had attended Grand Lodge must have seen that that distinguished brother ' s decision on all matters touching important questions was always received

with the greatest respect . Bro . Manning , in response , said he had watched the career of their esteemed Prov . G . M . ever since he was installed as ruler over their province , and could safely say that he was one of thc best and most earnest workers for the good of Freemasonry they had ever had , while his subordinates , present and past , tried , and had tried , to render themselves worthy of serving under him .

Bro . White said that he agreed with every word uttered by Bro . Manning with respect to the earnest Masonry of both Bro . Lord Brooke and Bro . Philbrick , and he could assure them that it afforded him very great pleasure to attend the meetings of Grand Lodge , and see ihe admirable manner in which their Prov . G . M . and Prov . D . G . M . carried out their high and important duties , and he

sincerely hoped the brethren of that lodge would attend the next meeting at Chelmsford , in August , for he believed that if they showed a good front , the Prov . Grand Lodge meeting of next year would be held at Romford , under the banner of the Liberty of Havering Lodge . Last year at Saffron Waldon he was the only brother present to represent the lodge , but he trusted one and all would attend the
