of the ritual better rendered than had been exhibited by the Wardens that evening . Bros . Wm . Oddy , P . M . 3 S 7 , Jas . Tiliey , 600 , and C . F . Forshaw , 2417 , 3150 responded to the toast , Bro . Forshaw offering the hospitality of the Bolingbroke Lodge to any of the brethren who could conveniently attend the lodge at Clapham Junction . The toast of "The W . M . " was proposed by Bro

Atkinson , W . M . 2069 , in highly complimentary terms , who remarked that the lodge could not fail to prosper under his able guidance supported as he appeared to be so loyally by the officers and brethren ; he was glad to see that the lodge was making progress , and he was sure that the brethren who had been initiated that evening would only regret that they had not become affiliated to the Craft years ago . He was delighted to have had the privilege of proposing the

toast . The toast was most heartily received by the brethren . The Worshipful Master in responding , referred to the two initiates who had been so astonished at the amount of knowledge required by the higher officers that they despaired of ever attaining thereto , and since that , as he ( the W . M . ) in conjunction with Bro . Auty , had communicated certain secrets to them already , he ( the W . M . ) would take that

opportunity of telling them of two more . One was that the way a Mason advanced to the highest office in a lodge was by passing step by step through the various offices of the lodge stage by stage , and that brother made the best W . M . who devoted himself carefully and faithfully to the performance of every detail in the respective offices through which he passed . Another secret was that no brother in a lodge was left to struggle on alone , but always received so

much help and support from the officers and brethren , that with due appreciation he could not fail to rise in office , and adjust himself even to the highest office of the lodge . Since he ( the W . M . ) had been a Freemason he had never failed to receive the greatest sympathy and help from his brethren , both in his own lodge and in all others , when he had been most heartily welcomed as a visitor , and now again in the declining hours of his year of office he had

once again to express his grateful thanks for all the kindnesses which had ever been extended to him , which he did with all his heart . The Tyler's toast brought a most successful and enjoyable evening to a close . The speeches after refreshment were interspersed with songs , which were ably rendered by Bros . Atkinson , Tiliey , Buckley , and other brethren .

PROVINCIAL PRIORY OP SUSSEX . An emergency meeting of this flourishing priory was held at the Royal Pavilion , Brighton , on Friday , the 26 th ult ., the object for which and the reasons why the knig hts were thus summoned is given in the following letter from Sir Knig ht Richard Clowes , E . Preceptor De Warrenne Preceptory .

Dear Sir Knight , His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught , K . G ., G . C . T ., & c , & c , National Great Prior of Ireland , having accepted the office of Provincial Prior for Sussex , finds it is impossible for him at present to fix a day for his installation , but hopes to do so in November . After the installation his Royal Highnesswill president a Provincial Priory ,

at which he will appoint and invest his officers . His Royal Highness has done me the distinguished honour to appoint me his Deputy , and has requested the Great Sub-Prior of England , the Right Honourable the Earl of Euston , to install me as Provincial Sub-Prior at the earliest opportunity , at a date convenient to himself . The Earl of Euston has fixed Friday , August 2 ( ith , for

the ceremony , which will take place at the Masonic Rooms , Royal Pavilion , Brighton , at 4 . 30 for 5 o ' clock precisely . The Great Sub-Prior will be assisted by several officers of the National Great Priory of England , and I venture to hope that the officers of the Provincial Priory and the knights of Sussex will make it convenient to attend in order to receive the Great Officers in due form , and to also assist me on this

occasion . —I am , yours in faith and fraternity , RICHARD CLOWES , E . Preceptor De Warrenne Preceptory . Clayton Wickham , Hassocks , Sussex , 15 th August , 1 S 92 . The knig hts responded to the above , and a goodly number assembled within the walls of the Royal

Pavilion , amongst whom we noticed Sir Knights the Rig ht Hon . Earl of Euston , Great Sub-Prior of England ; Col . Marmaduke Ramsay , District Grand Prior of Malta ; Baron de Ferrieres , F . A . Philbrick , E . Letchworth , R . Berridge , W . M . Bywater , C . V Matier , Driver , Cook , Cooper , Balfour Cockburn , Carrell , Lennox Browne , Carter , Clowes , Stewart

Brown , and others . The Great Sub-Prior was received wilh the full honours appertaining to his exalted rank , and the priory dul y opened . Lord EUSTON then stated that H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , K . G ., & c , Prov . Prior of Sussex , had requested him to carry out the installation of the Prov .

Sub-Prior of Sussex , the time of his Royal Highness being occupied with so overwhelming an amount of other important duties , that he was unable to be present at Brighton on this occasion . He ( Lord Euston ) was only too pleased to comply with the request of his Royal Highness , and the more so as Sir Knight Clowes

was so eminent and so distinguished a member of the fraternity . Sir Knight Clowes having been introduced by the Grand Officers , was regularly obligated and installed . The Prov . Sub-Prior entertained a large party at dinner at the Metropole in the evening .

PROVINCIAL GRAND CHAPTER OP LANARKSHIRE . The above Prov . Grand Chapter held their quarterly communication in St . Mark ' s Hall , Glasgow , on the 26 th ult . The companions present were Comps . Major F . W . Allan , acting G . Supt . ; Major A . E . Black , acting Prov . G . H . ; R . Bradsaw , P . Z . 6 7 , acting Prov !

' acting Prov . G . 3 rd A . S . ; E . Berger , Prov . G . Org . ; and G . Muir , Prov . G . Janitor . Apologies for absence were intimated from several office-bearers , as well as an apology from the Grand

Superintendent , Comp . W . J . Easton . The principal business was the report of the deputation who were appointed to wait upon the Grand Superintendent , Comp . W . J . Easton , to re-consider his decision of resignation of office , which he has held lor upwards of 14 years . Comp . Major F . W . ALLAN , on the announcement ol

the report that the Grand Superintendent could not comply with the wishes of the deputation , said he felt that he could not allow this occasion to pass without bearing his personal testimony to the loss which he had sustained as a colleague , a Mason , and a man . Probably he had more opportunities than any one present of knowing Comp . Easton ' s personal worth , and

probably few in the same capacity have worked with more indefatigable zeal , courtesy , and geniality amongst his colleagues , and throughout the extensive province over which it has been his privilege to reign . The hig h state of efficiency of the working of this chapter is not only known to the province but ' . also to the Supreme Grand Chapter . Major Allan was quite sure that the

loss was irreparable , and moved that Comp . Easton s resignation be accepted , and that it be recorded in the j minutes the deep sense and obligations the chapter and province are under for the invaluable services rendered by him , which was seconded in a few appropriate sentences by Major A . E . BLACK .

Comp . Major ALLAN then moved , and Comp . BRADSHAW seconded , that a letter be sent to Comp . Easton , conveying the heartiest thanks for his valuable services in the past , and wishing him all the happ iness accruing from a full sense of having faithfully performed his duties during a most trying period . The business concluded , the chapter was closed .

G . J . ; James Balfour , Prov . G . S . E . ; A . W . Watson P . J . 6 7 , acting Prov . G . ist A . S . ; T . R . Richards , 50 J acting Prov . G . 2 nd A . S . ; A . Mooney , P . G . Std . Br .
