MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS .

The duties of the Earl of Carnarvon Lodge of Instruction , No . 1642 , will be" resumed on Friday , the gth prox ., at the Kensington Park Hotel , Lancaster-road , Notting Hill , at S p . m . Bro . Sir Henry Drummond Wolff , the British Ambassador at Madrid , left San Sebastian on Thursday for England on leave of absence , the staff of the Embassy returning to Madrid .

Bro . Lieut .-General . Sir Evelyn Wood , V . C , commanding the camp at Aldershot , will leave England to-day ( Friday ) , for Germany for the purpose of attending the military manoeuvres . Bro . Sir Matthew White Ridley , Bart ., M . P ., and the Hon . Lady Ridley , who have been staying at Blagdon , are about to visit Bro . Lord Tweedmouth , at his seat in Invernesshire .

We are glad to hear that Bro . the Marquis of Bath , who is staying at Longleat , Wilts , and who last week while on a visit on business to Bath , contracted a chill which brought on a sharp attack of inflammation of the lungs , is slightly better . The Duke of Connaught , Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar , Bro . Sir George Willis , and other distinguished

oflicers were present at the Army and Navy Athletic Sports which were held on the United Service Recreation Ground , Portsmouth , on Saturday last . The death is reported of Dr . William Forbes Skene , Histriographer Royal for Scotland , who was in his 83 rd year , and whose loss as an historian and archaeologist will

be greatly deplored , not only in Scotland , but by students and scholars generally . Bro . Lord Mayor Sir David Evans , K . C . M . G ., and the Lady Mayoress will return to the Mansion House from their excursion to the West by the end of the present week . His lordship , however , will again leave town early next week to fulfil his engagement at the Welsh Eistedfodd .

On the ground of being more convenient to a majority of its members , the Clapton Lodge of Instruction has been moved to the City . The lodge room at the Great Eastern Hotel , Liverpool-street , E . C , has been kindly placed at the disposal oi tbe lodge by the management . Meetings will be held every Friday evening at 7 o'clock . Between Co and 70 members and friends of the Royal

Albert Lodge , No . 1302 , Redhill , went to Brighton on the 17 th ult . for a day ' s excursion . Bro . V . G . Field , W . M ., accompanied the party , which started by the 10 . 6 a . m . train . The weather was showery but warm , and the members dined together at the Cafe Royal in West-street .

Sheerness Royal Regatta was held on Monday , in fine weather , and in the presence of thousands of spectators . There was a full programme , and the competitors were composed principally of representatives of the navy and army and men employed in the Sheerness Dockyards . Several of the events were keenly contested .

Bro . Lord Egerton of Tatton pres'ded at the half-yearly meeting on Tuesday of the Manchester Ship Canal Company , and , though he admitted it was unsatisfactory to find the calculations of thc engineers constantly upset , he pointed out that the whole system had been re-organised , and based on the calculation that the canal would be opened by the end ot 1 S 93 .

The heaviest rainfall that has been known at Rothesay set in about 4 p . m . on Monday , from which time it rained continuously till the following morning , when the roads and streets in the town except in the highest parts had all the appearance of rivers . Some districts around Glasgow are also surrounded by water , and in consequence very severe damage has been done to the crops .

Numerous Wesley relics were recently discovered by the authorities of the Weslejan Conference Book Room , Cityroad , and to these must now be added some 15 manuscripts , said to be in an excellent state of preservation , which the Rev . C . H . Kelly , the Connexional Book Steward , has just found in the cellars of that establishment . The greater number are hymns and poems of Charles Wesley , ; all in his own handwriting . There is also a volume of poems by Samuel Wesley .

On Monday Bro . Lord Mayor Evans addressed ? n appeal to the public to contribute to a Mansion House Fund for the relief of the widows , orphans , and aged relations of the miners killed by the recent terrible colliery disaster near Bridgend . In making this appeal , his lordship refers to the

fact of his being a native of South Wales , and that only a few weeks ago , when he visited Bridgend , these colliers , many of whom have been killed by this disaster , and their wives and children Hocked out to give him a hearty welcome . 1 he number of deaths is stated at 110 .

"The Cornish Freemasons , at the head of whom is the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , held high festival at Truro on Tuesday . There are not wanting cavillers and detractors who decry Freemasonry , yet it has of late years made rapid strides , and the only danger is , according to Mr . W . J .

Hughan , of Torquay—who very many were glad to welcome to Truro once again—lest sufficient use is not made of tbe ballot when the question of the admission of a new member arises . It is , of course , largely because Freemasons do not act up to their principles that ground is given to the caviller and detractor . "—Roval Cornwall Gazette .

The daily talk is of cholera , but with the great sanitary improvements which have been adopted in London since iSfifi , when it raged in the East-end of the Metropolis , there is no reason wh y the public mind should be seriously perturbed . The few cases which have occurred have been promptly dealt with , and the sufferers completely isolated , but the persons altacki d appear to have come from Russia

or Hamburg , and we are glad to see the announament in some o ( the morning and evening papers that some of the shipping companies have resolved to take no alien paupers as passengers . Meanwhile the disease seems lobe raging frightfully at Hamburg and in Russia , while occasionally cases are reported as having occurred at Berlin , in France , and in some of our own provincial towns .

Masonic And General Tidings.

The Star Chapter of instruction will resume its meetings to-day ( Friday ) , at the Stirling Castle , Church-street , Camberwell , at 7 p . m ., and will meet every subsequent Friday at 8 p . m . The Guildhall Library will , in future , be fitted with the electric light , it having been found that the gas has done considerable damage to the bindings of many of the books . The new light will also add considerably to the comfort of readers .

According to an American newspaper there is one woman Freemason in the world . Her name is Mrs . Salome Anderson , and she lives in California . She secretly entered a lodge-room in Paris , witnessed some of the initiation ceremonies , and on being discovered was admitted into the Order .

A lady has forwarded a cheque for £ 1000 in aid of the building fund of the new Home for Incurables at Streatham , the first stone of which was laid by the Princess Christian on the 16 th July last , on which occasion a cheque for a like sum was handed to her Royal Highness on behalf of two sisters .

It is understood that the title which will be assumed by Bro . W . A . Tyssen-Amherst , lately M . P . for South-West Norfolk , on his elevation to the peerage , will be that of Baron Amherst of Hackney , in which district of the Metropolis he owns considerable property . His lordship is of the same ancestry as Bro . Earl Amherst , Prov . Grand Master of Kent .

The second Venetian fete was given , by permission of the Commandant , Bro . Col . Shaw-Hellier , in the grounds attached to the Royal Military School of Music , Kneller Hall , on Wednesday evening , when , notwithstanding the showery state of the weather , thousands flocked from Hounslow , Twickenham , Richmond , and neighbouring towns to witness the spectacle and listen to the military music .

Among those who will entertain parties during Doncaster Race week are Bro . the Duke of Portland , at Welbeck Abbey ; Sir Tatton and Lady Sykes , at a residence they have taken in Doncaster ; and Lord and Lady St . Oswald , at Nestell Priory , among whose guests will be Bro . the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire , the Marquis and Marchioness of Londonderry , Lord and Lady Alington , the Dowager Countess of Dudley , and the Lady Edith Ward .

Ihe Oueen , accompanied by Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg and their children and the children of the Duchess of Connaught , left the Isle of Wight on Monday evening for Scotland . The Royal party reached Ballater the following afternoon , and drove thence in closed carriages to Balmoral Castle , where the Court will remain till some time during the month of November .

Sir J . Heron-Maxwell presided at a special court of the Governors of the Royal Caledonian Asylum , Holloway , when , out of a long list of candidates , three girls and four boys were elected to the benefits of the charity . It was stated that at present 1 S 6 children of Scottish parentage are being maintained and educated in the asylum , many of them being the orphans of Scottish soldiers and sailors killed in the service of the country .

Medals have recently been awarded by the Royal Humane Society to A . V . Parker and W . J . Frogyard , firemen , for rescuing children from drowning near Cherry Garden Pier , Rotherhithe , on the 25 th July and 4 th August respectively , and Private R . Summers , ist Battalion Grenadier Guards , for saving F . Burton of the same regiment , who in attempting to escape from military escort , was on the point of drowning , when Summers in full uniform jumped in and saved him .

Bro . General Lord Roberts , V . C , Commander-in-Chief of India , has informed the Duke of Grafton , Chairman of the Mansion House Committee of the Lord Strathnairn Memorial Fund , that the Government of India have unanimously agreed to present the requisite quantity of gun metal for the equestrian statue which is to be erected to the late Lord Strathnairn at the junction of the Knightsbridge and Brompton roads . The commission for the statue has been entrusted to Mr . E . Onslow-Ford , A . R . A .

The Prime Minister appears to have had a narrow escape from what might have proved a very serious accident . 1 he right hon . gentleman had been for a drive in Hawarden Park with Mrs . Gladstone and was returning home on foot , when he was suddenly knocked down by a mad heifer

which had escaped from its owner and was wandering in the park . On recovering his feet Mr . Gladstone sought shelter behind a tree , and the heifer , which made off in another direction , was subsequently shot . We rejoice to hear that he has sustained no serious injuries from the accident .

We are informed by Comp . John Chadwick , Prov . G . S . E , of East Lancashire , that the consecration of the Hutchinson Chapter , No . 3 S 1 , will take place on Wednesday , the 28 th inst ., in the Council Chamber , Darwen , at 3 o ' clock p . m . Comp . Col . Le Gendre N . Starkie , P . G . S . N ., Grand Supt .

of East Lancashire , will consecrate the chapter , whilst Comp . J . H . Sillitoe , Prov . G . H ., will install the Principals , assisted by Comp . A . H . Jefferis , Prov . G . J . It isexpected there will be a very large assembly of companions from this and other provinces .

All brethren of our Fraternity in Scotland will hail with satisfaction the elevation to the peerage of Colonel Sir Archibald C . Campbell , of Blythswood , Bart ., Past Grand Master of Scotland . Sir Archibald is everywhere highly respected , but nowhere more highly than amongst

Freemasons . As a distinction of merit it was well merited , and as one of worth it is worthily conferred . Sir Archibald has the congratulations and best wishes of every member of the Cralt in his new title , which , I understand , will be that of Lord Blythswood . — " Mallett " in the Glasgow Evening News .

The next session of the East Surrey Lodge of Concord No . 463 , Lodge of Instruction , will commence on Tuesday next , the 6 th inst ., at the Greyhound Hotel , Croydon at 8 p . m ., punctually , and every Tuesday at 8 p . m . ' Mr . Stevenson ' s " Wrecker" is already well advanced in its fourth edition . His new book , "The Beach of Fales , V will be ready during * this month or early in October , jy the first edition of his work on Samoa , entitled " A Foot . Note to History , " has been nearly exhausted .

A protest has been published , signed by the Duke o [ Westminster , Lords Tennyson and Monkswell , Miss Ottawa Hill , Bro . Sir Frederick Leighton , P . R . A ., William Morris , E . N . Shaw , and others against the demolition of Emanuel Hospital , Westminster .

General regret will be felt at the intelligence that Si , Richard Owen , who is in his Sgth year , and has been con . fined to his bed at Sheen Lodge , Richmond , for some three weeks , is able to take but little nourishment , and that bis condition is causing great anxiety to his friends .

For a long time past Messrs . Cassell and Company have had in contemplation the issue of an illustrated boys' paper on different lines from existing periodicals , and since the commencement of the year have been making preparations for its issue . The services of Mr . Max Pemberton have been secured as editor , and it has been arranged to issue No . 1 on the 14 th inst .

The struggle for the County Cricket Championship has terminated in a victory for Surrey , which of the 16 matches played this season , has won 13 , lost two , and drawn one . Notts , which almost to the very last stood a good chance of being champion , was a good second with eight , anl Somersetshire , which has been doing some rare scoring was also well placed . '

The Duke of Portland returns to Welbeck from Scotland at the end of the week , and entertains a distinguished party of about 30 for Doncaster Races . Among them » ii be the Duke of Cambridge , this being his Royal Highness ' s first visit to Welbeck since his host came to the title . A special train will be run each day between YVorksop and Doncaster . The Duchess of Portland remains at Langivell .

A team of the Mortlake Working Men ' s Cricket Club visited the White Lodge , Richmond Park , on Saturday last , and played an eleven selected from the servants . At the close of the game the visitors were entertained by the Duke of Teck . Subsequently Prince Alexander of Teck played in a tradesman ' s match at Mortlake in aid of the funds of the Richmond Hospital , the result being a cleat profit to that institution of about £ 13 .

Barnet Fair will commence on Monday next , and the town and country round will be thronged with a strong contingent of London thieves and blackguards . It is said the Lord of the Manor has renewed his proposal for its abolition , and has given an undertaking to forego the tolls he is entitled to on all live stock sold at the fair and taken outot the district . It is to be hoped the proposal will come to something , and that ultimately the fair will be abolished .

Her Majesty has , through Dr . Reid , telegraphed a message of condolence to the Rev . VV . H . Macleod , son ol Sir George Macleod , Surgeon-in-Ordinary to the Queen in Scotland , whose death has just been announced . The message runs as follows : "lhe Queen commands rae to express to you her very deep regret at your father ' s death , and her sincere sympathy with your family in the great lass you have sustained .

To the Baroness Burdett-Coutts is the credit mainly due of establishing the fishing industry of Baltimore , a village not far from Skibbereen , county Cork . A crowning effort on the part of her ladyship , assisted by the Rev . Fatte Davis , is a railway which the late Government were induced to construct for the purpose of assisting Ireland ' s industrial progress . The line is to be opened shortly , and the Baroness has undertaken to perform the ceremony .

A tremendous fire—the greatest since Bro . Capt . Shw resigned his command of the Metropolitan Fire Bri gadebroke out early on Monday morning in the block of buildings belonging to the Goldsmiths' Company , and bounded by Jewin-street , Jewin-crescent , Australian-avenue , and Red Cross-street . A large number of steamers and manual engines were employed in extinguishing the flames , butso

Meanwhile the disease seems lobe raging frightfully at Hamburg and in Russia , while occasionally cases are reported as having occurred at Berlin , in France , and in some of our own provincial towns .

Masonic And General Tidings.

The Star Chapter of instruction will resume its meetings to-day ( Friday ) , at the Stirling Castle , Church-street , Camberwell , at 7 p . m ., and will meet every subsequent Friday at 8 p . m . The Guildhall Library will , in future , be fitted with the electric light , it having been found that the gas has done considerable damage to the bindings of many of the books . The new light will also add considerably to the comfort of readers .

According to an American newspaper there is one woman Freemason in the world . Her name is Mrs . Salome Anderson , and she lives in California . She secretly entered a lodge-room in Paris , witnessed some of the initiation ceremonies , and on being discovered was admitted into the Order .

A lady has forwarded a cheque for £ 1000 in aid of the building fund of the new Home for Incurables at Streatham , the first stone of which was laid by the Princess Christian on the 16 th July last , on which occasion a cheque for a like sum was handed to her Royal Highness on behalf of two sisters .

It is understood that the title which will be assumed by Bro . W . A . Tyssen-Amherst , lately M . P . for South-West Norfolk , on his elevation to the peerage , will be that of Baron Amherst of Hackney , in which district of the Metropolis he owns considerable property . His lordship is of the same ancestry as Bro . Earl Amherst , Prov . Grand Master of Kent .

The second Venetian fete was given , by permission of the Commandant , Bro . Col . Shaw-Hellier , in the grounds attached to the Royal Military School of Music , Kneller Hall , on Wednesday evening , when , notwithstanding the showery state of the weather , thousands flocked from Hounslow , Twickenham , Richmond , and neighbouring towns to witness the spectacle and listen to the military music .

Ihe Oueen , accompanied by Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg and their children and the children of the Duchess of Connaught , left the Isle of Wight on Monday evening for Scotland . The Royal party reached Ballater the following afternoon , and drove thence in closed carriages to Balmoral Castle , where the Court will remain till some time during the month of November .

Sir J . Heron-Maxwell presided at a special court of the Governors of the Royal Caledonian Asylum , Holloway , when , out of a long list of candidates , three girls and four boys were elected to the benefits of the charity . It was stated that at present 1 S 6 children of Scottish parentage are being maintained and educated in the asylum , many of them being the orphans of Scottish soldiers and sailors killed in the service of the country .

Medals have recently been awarded by the Royal Humane Society to A . V . Parker and W . J . Frogyard , firemen , for rescuing children from drowning near Cherry Garden Pier , Rotherhithe , on the 25 th July and 4 th August respectively , and Private R . Summers , ist Battalion Grenadier Guards , for saving F . Burton of the same regiment , who in attempting to escape from military escort , was on the point of drowning , when Summers in full uniform jumped in and saved him .

Bro . General Lord Roberts , V . C , Commander-in-Chief of India , has informed the Duke of Grafton , Chairman of the Mansion House Committee of the Lord Strathnairn Memorial Fund , that the Government of India have unanimously agreed to present the requisite quantity of gun metal for the equestrian statue which is to be erected to the late Lord Strathnairn at the junction of the Knightsbridge and Brompton roads . The commission for the statue has been entrusted to Mr . E . Onslow-Ford , A . R . A .

The Prime Minister appears to have had a narrow escape from what might have proved a very serious accident . 1 he right hon . gentleman had been for a drive in Hawarden Park with Mrs . Gladstone and was returning home on foot , when he was suddenly knocked down by a mad heifer

which had escaped from its owner and was wandering in the park . On recovering his feet Mr . Gladstone sought shelter behind a tree , and the heifer , which made off in another direction , was subsequently shot . We rejoice to hear that he has sustained no serious injuries from the accident .

A special train will be run each day between YVorksop and Doncaster . The Duchess of Portland remains at Langivell .

A team of the Mortlake Working Men ' s Cricket Club visited the White Lodge , Richmond Park , on Saturday last , and played an eleven selected from the servants . At the close of the game the visitors were entertained by the Duke of Teck . Subsequently Prince Alexander of Teck played in a tradesman ' s match at Mortlake in aid of the funds of the Richmond Hospital , the result being a cleat profit to that institution of about £ 13 .

Barnet Fair will commence on Monday next , and the town and country round will be thronged with a strong contingent of London thieves and blackguards . It is said the Lord of the Manor has renewed his proposal for its abolition , and has given an undertaking to forego the tolls he is entitled to on all live stock sold at the fair and taken outot the district . It is to be hoped the proposal will come to something , and that ultimately the fair will be abolished .

Her Majesty has , through Dr . Reid , telegraphed a message of condolence to the Rev . VV . H . Macleod , son ol Sir George Macleod , Surgeon-in-Ordinary to the Queen in Scotland , whose death has just been announced . The message runs as follows : "lhe Queen commands rae to express to you her very deep regret at your father ' s death , and her sincere sympathy with your family in the great lass you have sustained .

To the Baroness Burdett-Coutts is the credit mainly due of establishing the fishing industry of Baltimore , a village not far from Skibbereen , county Cork . A crowning effort on the part of her ladyship , assisted by the Rev . Fatte Davis , is a railway which the late Government were induced to construct for the purpose of assisting Ireland ' s industrial progress . The line is to be opened shortly , and the Baroness has undertaken to perform the ceremony .
