The damage caused by the tornado at Martinique in the month of August is described ashavingbeen very great . Over 50 vessels vvere driven ashore and wrecked , plantations and houses vvere swept away , and about 300 inhabitants vvere killed , while about 1000 sustained injuries more or less serious .

The Prince of Wales , who has been on a visit to the Oueen at Balmoral , left for Mar Lodge , Braemar , on Saturday evening last on a visit to Bro , the Duke and Duchess of Fife . Bro . Charles G . L . Kipling , P . M . i 9 Si , who served under Captain Shaw for 16 years , sailed on the 2 nd inst . to take charge of the Fire Brigade at Yokohama , Japan . Bro . General Sir Frederick Sleigh Roberts , Bart ., V . C ., G . C . B ., Commander-in-Chief in India , who vvas born at Cawnpore , entered upon his 60 th year on Wednesday .

The Earl of Carnarvon has been entertaining his Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire tenants at dinner at Bretby Park , Burton-on-Trent . The guests numbered about 150 . Bro . Meyer ' s knowledge of and experience in the Craft are so extended , that he adorns every position which he is called to fill . The Metropolitan rifle ranges at Wraysbury are nearly finished , and will be ready for practice by the end of next month . The short-range butt is 1207 feet long , and with the long-range butt forms a prominent feature in the landscape between the Staines and Wraysbury stations of the London and South-Western Railway , by which , as well as by the West Drayton branch of the Great VVestern , the Metropolitan Volunteers will be conveyed to the spot .

The Duchess of Albany vvas present in the rooms ' of the City of London Young Men ' s Christian Association in Aldersgate-street on Monday evening for the purpose of presenting the prizes to the successful members in the Educational Classes and Athletic Clubs'Competition . A

very glowing account vvas given by the Chairman , Mr . George Williams , of the rapid growth of this class of association , and at the close of the distribution a cordial vote of thanks vvas passed to her Royal Highness for attending .

The annual prize meeting of the Honourable Artillery Company took place at the llford ranges on Friday , the 25 th ult ., about 150 members being present . Theshootingcommenced at eight a . m ., and lasted till five p . m ., the number of competitions being three . In the first—five shots standing and five shots kneeling at 100 yards , five shots kneeling at 200 yards , and five shots prone at 300

yards—Staff-Sergeant VVace scored 75 points , and Sergeant Vasley and Privates Gillert and Reside 74 each . In the second—seven shotseach at 200 , 500 , and 600 yards—Private Gillert took the first prize with 97 points , and Private Rosenthal the second prize with 94 points . In the third competition , in which the aggregate of the two previous scores vvas reckoned , Private Gillert took Lord de Vesci ' s prize with a total of 171 .

Masonic festivities occupy a prominent place in the records of the English Masonic papers just now . One issue of the Freemason reports five functions of a character more or less out of the routine . The VV . M . of one lodge—the Alliance—entertained the whole of the brethren at a banquet at the Crystal Palace . The New Cross Lodge , which has a large Italian element in its membership , indulged in a summer outing to Hampton Court , a large number of ladies

accompanying the Masons . The Gallery Lod ^ e , composed entirely of reporters , had also , accompanied by their lady friends , a similar picnic in the neighbourhood of Guildford . A Liverpool lodge—the Devonshire—likewise took wives and sweethearts on a picnic to the Vale of Llangollen , and the British , Union Lodge , of Ipswich , Suffolk , held what appears to bean annual institution , " a feast of roses , " the hall being profusely decorated with England ' s national flower . —South African Freemason .

The number of visitors to the Royal Naval Exhibition last week was 92 , 677 , of whom 26 , 581 attended on Saturday . This raises the total since the opening in May to 1 , 990 , 6 99 . The Princess Christian and Princess Victoria of Schleswi g-Holstein arrived on Saturday morning last at Aberdeen , and proceeded thence by the Dundee Railway to Balmoral on a visit to her Majesty .

The Rugby Foot-ball team , after a very successful tour in South Africa , have returned to England . They won all the 19 matches they played , scoring 224 points to one try b y their adversaries . Bro . Akers-Douglas , M . P ., paid a visit to Walmer Castle on Saturday last , and spent some time with the First Lord of the Treasury , who , though weak , is improving in health , and is able to take a short cruise on his yacht every day .

Bro . James Glaisher , F . R . S ., President , and the members of the Council of the Photographic Society of Great Britain , received a numerous company at the Institute of Painters in Water Colours , 5 A , Pall Mall , on the occasion of their annual soiree on Saturday last .

Five new bishops were consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury and 12 bishops as assistant consecrators in St . Paul's Cathedral on Tuesday , in the presence of a congregation which Was estimated to exceed 5000 . The procession of choristers , clergy , and bishops , each of whom vvas attended by his chaplains , vvas very imposing , and a very able sermon was preached by Prebendary Gilson .

A large amount of grain was harvested last week . In East Anglia , Lincolnshire , and Yorkshire but little remains in the fields , and even in some parts of Scotland harvest homes have been sounded , but in the Highlands and mountainous districts of England a good deal remains to be done . The estimates from Ireland are declared to be very satisfactory .

The usual Michaelmas Day service vvas held at the Church of St . Lawrence Jewry on Tuesday , and was attended by Bro . the Lord Mayor Sir Joseph Savory , Bart ., the Sheriffs , Aldermen , and Corporation officers . Afterwards the civic procession returned to the Guildhall , where Bro . Alderman Evans vvas chosen Lord Mayor for the ensuing year . There vvas a very large attendance , and at the reception dinner at the Mansion House in the evening the Court of Aldermen vvas very numerously represented .

trans-, ferring it now . Day Star Lodge was established over two years ago , and has had a prosperous career . Bro . Day furnished a hall and charged no rent for its use . The Earl of Carnarvon has been entertaining his Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire tenants at dinner at Bretby Park , Burton-on-Trent . The guests numbered about 150 . Tuesday ' s Gazette contained a Royal proclamation further proroguing Parliament from the 20 th October to Thursday , December 10 th , the convocations of Canterbury and York being also prorogued .

The Metropolitan rifle ranges at Wraysbury are nearly finished , and will be ready for practice by the end of next month . The short-range butt is 1207 feet long , and with the long-range butt forms a prominent feature in the landscape between the Staines and Wraysbury stations of the London and South-Western Railway , by which , as well as by the West Drayton branch of the Great VVestern , the Metropolitan Volunteers will be conveyed to the spot .

The Duchess of Albany vvas present in the rooms ' of the City of London Young Men ' s Christian Association in Aldersgate-street on Monday evening for the purpose of presenting the prizes to the successful members in the Educational Classes and Athletic Clubs'Competition . A

very glowing account vvas given by the Chairman , Mr . George Williams , of the rapid growth of this class of association , and at the close of the distribution a cordial vote of thanks vvas passed to her Royal Highness for attending .

The annual prize meeting of the Honourable Artillery Company took place at the llford ranges on Friday , the 25 th ult ., about 150 members being present . Theshootingcommenced at eight a . m ., and lasted till five p . m ., the number of competitions being three . In the first—five shots standing and five shots kneeling at 100 yards , five shots kneeling at 200 yards , and five shots prone at 300

yards—Staff-Sergeant VVace scored 75 points , and Sergeant Vasley and Privates Gillert and Reside 74 each . In the second—seven shotseach at 200 , 500 , and 600 yards—Private Gillert took the first prize with 97 points , and Private Rosenthal the second prize with 94 points . In the third competition , in which the aggregate of the two previous scores vvas reckoned , Private Gillert took Lord de Vesci ' s prize with a total of 171 .

Masonic festivities occupy a prominent place in the records of the English Masonic papers just now . One issue of the Freemason reports five functions of a character more or less out of the routine . The VV . M . of one lodge—the Alliance—entertained the whole of the brethren at a banquet at the Crystal Palace . The New Cross Lodge , which has a large Italian element in its membership , indulged in a summer outing to Hampton Court , a large number of ladies

The number of visitors to the Royal Naval Exhibition last week was 92 , 677 , of whom 26 , 581 attended on Saturday . This raises the total since the opening in May to 1 , 990 , 6 99 . The Princess Christian and Princess Victoria of Schleswi g-Holstein arrived on Saturday morning last at Aberdeen , and proceeded thence by the Dundee Railway to Balmoral on a visit to her Majesty .

The Rugby Foot-ball team , after a very successful tour in South Africa , have returned to England . They won all the 19 matches they played , scoring 224 points to one try b y their adversaries . Bro . Akers-Douglas , M . P ., paid a visit to Walmer Castle on Saturday last , and spent some time with the First Lord of the Treasury , who , though weak , is improving in health , and is able to take a short cruise on his yacht every day .

Bro . James Glaisher , F . R . S ., President , and the members of the Council of the Photographic Society of Great Britain , received a numerous company at the Institute of Painters in Water Colours , 5 A , Pall Mall , on the occasion of their annual soiree on Saturday last .

Five new bishops were consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury and 12 bishops as assistant consecrators in St . Paul's Cathedral on Tuesday , in the presence of a congregation which Was estimated to exceed 5000 . The procession of choristers , clergy , and bishops , each of whom vvas attended by his chaplains , vvas very imposing , and a very able sermon was preached by Prebendary Gilson .

A large amount of grain was harvested last week . In East Anglia , Lincolnshire , and Yorkshire but little remains in the fields , and even in some parts of Scotland harvest homes have been sounded , but in the Highlands and mountainous districts of England a good deal remains to be done . The estimates from Ireland are declared to be very satisfactory .

The usual Michaelmas Day service vvas held at the Church of St . Lawrence Jewry on Tuesday , and was attended by Bro . the Lord Mayor Sir Joseph Savory , Bart ., the Sheriffs , Aldermen , and Corporation officers . Afterwards the civic procession returned to the Guildhall , where Bro . Alderman Evans vvas chosen Lord Mayor for the ensuing year . There vvas a very large attendance , and at the reception dinner at the Mansion House in the evening the Court of Aldermen vvas very numerously represented .
