Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

K . S ., for it was the highest honour the lodge could bestow on any of the members . Perhaps at the election they had remembered an oft-repeated saying , "No cross , no crown ; " but he could assure the brethren that their W . M . was most anxious to do all in his power for the prosperity of the lodge . He would ask them to fill their glasses a bumper , and to drink the toast of "The W . M ., " wishing

him health and a prosperous year of office . The W . M . thanked Bro . Castell , P . M ., and the brethren for the kind way the toast had been proposed and accepted , and said it would be his great aim to emulate their I . P . M ., and trusted he would receive the support of the brethren , in order that the coming year mig ht be as successful as had been the past .

The W . M ., in giving the toast of " The Installing and I . P . Master , Bro . Castell , " said he was sure it would be received with enthusiasm . Every member of the lodge was delighted with the excellent working of Bro . Castell , especially as he had initiated no ' less than 15 during his term of office , and at nearly every meeting had had the Three Degrees to work . His rendering was very

impressive , and would , he was sure , never be forgotten by those who had entered Masonry under his Mastership . _ He had great pleasure in pinning the P . M . ' s jewel on Bro . Castell ' s breast , and to express his and the brethren's wish that he might live many years to wear it as a Past Master of their lodge . Bro . Castell , in responding , said he felt , for once , lost

for words to express his deep thanks for the kindness he had received from the brethren . That beautiful jewel would often remind him of the very happy year that he had spent as their W . M ., following on those months of sickness , pain , [ and sorrow that preceded his installation , when he , as well as those who watched his illness , feared it was his last . The G . A . O . T . U . had restored him to

health , and , in the future , it would be his earnest endeavour to do all he could for Freemasonry in general , and the Burgoyne Lodge in particular . The Worshipful Master then gave the toast of "The Visitors . " Bros . C . Smith , P . M ., Ellis , Bramley , and Turner responded , all expressing their pleasure at being present , and

extolling the working . The toast of "The Masonic Charities" was ably responded to by Bro . John Mason , who said he was glad to find that the Burgoyne Lodge had during the Mastership of Bro . Castell voted £ 10 ios . to each of the Institutions , and yet was able to hand over such an excellent balance . He expressed the hope . that the lodge would continue in

well doing , for one of the foundations of Masonry was Charity , and he reminded the brethren of the words of that " great light in Freemasonry , " that old book of " sacred writings " — " The liberal soul shall be made fat . " The toasts of "The P . M . ' s , " "The Treasurer and

Secretary , " and "The Officers of the Lodge" were given and responded to , and the Tyler's toast brought to a close this successful meeting . The P . M . ' s jewel presented to Bro . Castell was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , and was much admired by the brethren and visitors .

ECLECTIC LODGE ( No . 1201 ) . —On Friday , the 26 th ult ., a meeting of the above lodge was held at Freemasons' Hall , Great Queen-street . The business transacted was of a formal character , the principal item being the presentation , by the W . M . and Wardens , of new officers' collars , & c , for which the cordial thanks of the brethren assembled was proposed , seconded , and

unanimously carried . The lodge being closed , the members repaired to the adjoining establishment , where , in the meantime , their wives and lady friends had been welcomed by a reception Committee ; and , in due time , the company , numbering over 50 , sat down to a most excellent banquet . There were present Bros . A . F . Forman , W . M . ; J .

Leach Barrett , S . W . ; C H . Chauffourier , J . W . ; J . Mander , P . M . and Treas . ; Arthur E . Taylor , P . M . and Sec ; Lyon , S . D . ; Surridge , J . D . ; Restall , I . G . ; Munday , I . P . M . ; Dr . S . Lloyd , P . M . ; J . H . Watts , P . M . 5 J . Amsden , P . M . ; T . Pedlar , Madell , Hawkins , Le Y . D . Anley , H . Anley , Haworth , and Jourden . Visitors : Bros . C . Cooke , C F . Hogard , P . G . Std . Br . ; Long , Lechertier , Du Plat , Bird , Gartley , Roussillion , Beazley ,

Kift , Moore , and Frohlich . Mesdames Foreman , Barrett , Chauffourier , Mander , Taylor , Surridge , Eason , Munday , Lloyd , Haworth , Du Plat , Pedlar , Beazley , and Long . Misses Lyon , Lloyd , Vincent , and Bright . At the conclusion of the banquet , the usual Masonic toasts were proposed and honoured , Bro . Hogard returning thanks for " The Grand Officers . " Bro . Munday , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the

W . M ., " and congratulated him upon the success of the evening . The W . M ., in reply , warmly welcomed the ladies to this the second entertainment of the kind given by the lodge , the previous one having taken place in 187 S , during the Mastership of Bro . Taylor . Bro . Watts , P . M ., having proposed , and Bro . Lyon , S . D ., having returned thanks for " The Ladies , "

The W . M . rose , and said : I have now the pleasure to give what I consider the toast of the evening , viz ., that of "The P . M . ' s , " and especially that of Bro . Taylor , P . M . and Secretary , for in placing this before you I am reminded of a most pleasing duty which devolves upon me . It is the presentation of a testimonial to our much respected Bro . Taylor . There is much I could wish to say

respecting it , but the ladies and brethren will better understand ^ the object of this testimonial by my reading the inscription thereon— "Presented to Bro . and Companion Arthur E . Taylor , P . P . G . Supt . of Works Surrey , P . M ., P . Z . 1201 , P . M ., P . Z . 1851 , by the Brethren and Companions of the Eclectic and Ewell Lodges and Chapters , to mark their appreciation of his services in various offices

especially as Secretary and Scribe E ., and their admiration of his devotedness to the interests of Freemasonry in general . Bro . Taylor , no one can realise better than yourself the feelings by which we have been actuated in making this presentation . It will never be necessary for

you to refer to it to be reminded of the sentiments of respect in which you are held by the members of the Craft , but when your son arrives ( as I trust he will ) at the estate ° f manhood , to be a source of happiness to you and yours , you may then point to it and tell him that your honourable career in Freemasonry has gained for you the respect and friendship ; nay , I would say , the affection of all those bre-

thren who , in common with myself , have had the privilege of being brought into contact with you . The testimonial consists of a most elaborate drawing in pen and ink , executed with the finish of a steel engraving by Bro . T . Pedlar , a member of the Iodge , and represented a freize and pediment , supported by two columns , that on the left being a fluted Corinthian , and on the right Ionic ,

both with their respective pedestals , balustrades , & c . In the centre of the pediment over the main cornice is the Allseeing Eye , underneath on a scroll laying over the entablature is the Royal Arch jewel , underneath the freize is the date of presentation on a scroll , with the square and compasses on the left , and crossed gavels on the right . In the panel of the Corinthian column is the Past Master's jewel ,

on the corresponding side is the P . Z . jewel , and in the centre the Secretary ' s jewel and other Masonic emblems , The drawing is enclosed in a mount and solid oak frame . Bro . Taylor , in reply , said : W . M ., officers , and brethren —I hardly know in what terms I can express to you the feelings which arise within me at this moment , or how I can adequately reply to the remarks which have been so

kindly conveyed by the W . M ., beyond saying that the recollection of this event will remain in my heart till death . The long associations I have had with this my mother lodge have rendered it and its members very dear to me , and my connection with the Eclectic Chapter and the Ewell Lodge and Chapter , all of which I assisted in founding , has at all times given

me the greatest possible gratification , and after the numberless proofs I have had of the esteem of the brethren , this last token of their kindness and goodwill affects me so powerfully that I am left without words properly to show the feelings of gratitude with which I am animated , and , W . M ., I feel keenly your allusion to my son , and you may rest assured that the beautiful testimonial you have

presented me with this evening will be an heirloom to be prized by him , and which , when he arrives at an age to understand it , I shall show him , with pleasure and pride , to testify to the esteem , love , and kindness always shown to his father by the members of those Masonic Societies to which he had the privilege to belong . Music well rendered by several members and visitors

assisted in enlivening the proceedings , Mrs . Surridge being much applauded for the excellent manner in which she delivered the song she had selected . Atlthe desire , however , of some , the W . M . soon after cut short both speech and song , and the room was cleared for dancing , which was kept up till the warning tones of Bro . Madell , the manager , in announcing the close of the establishment , caused members and friends to depart .

Bro .
