The Worshipful Master gave the opening toasts " The Queen and the Craft " and "The M . W . the Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , K . G ., " which were duly

honoured . In proposing " The M . W . Pro Grand Master , the Right Hon . the Earl of Carnarvon ; the R . W . Deputy Grand Master , the Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom ; and the Officers of Grand Lodge , Present and Past , " theW . M . said he was pleased to see such a large gathering of Grand Officers present . He and the brethren ot the lodge heartily

welcomed them , and recognised the able manner in which they carried out their arduous duties . The toast vvas acknowledged by Bros . Lord H . Thynne , P . S . G . W . ; F . A . Philbrick , Q . C , G . Reg . ; and T . Fenn , President of the Board of General Purposes . Each expressed the pleasure he felt in seeing Bro . Sir W . 1 " . Marriott presiding as W . M ., and wished continued

prosperity to the Earl of Sussex Lodge . The Worshipful Master next proposed " The R . W . Prov . Grand Master of Sussex , H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught . " It was a toast which would , he said , be received with enthusiasm , for Sussex Freemasons would not fail to remember the two occasions on which the Duke

of Connaught had recently visited Sussex—to be installed as Prov . Grand Master by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , and to consecrate the Earl of Sussex Lodge . Amidst his many duties in India , the Duke of Connaught never forgot the Sussex Province , and the brethren looked forward with pleasure to his re-appearance amongst them . The toast was received with great heartiness .

In submitting the next toast" The W . Deputy Prov . G . Master , Bro . Gerard Ford , P . G . Deacon , and the Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge , Present and Past . " The W . M . said he was personally pleased , and the brethren of the Earl of Sussex Lodge shared his pleasure , in seeing so many Provincial Grand Officers present . He , and all present , deeply regretted the illness of their Deputy Prov .

Grand Master , Bro . Gerard Ford , a zealous and thoroughgoing Mason , and sincerely trusted their absent brother would speedily be restored to good health . He called upon Bro . E . Martin , P . P . S . G . W . ( Mayor of Brighton ) , and Bro . Joseph Farncombe , Prov . J . G . W . ( Mayor of Lewes ) , to acknowledge the toast . Bro . E . Martin said he regretted that he could not do such justice to the toast , as others around him could . For the

past twelve months his municipal duties had prevented him from devoting much time to Freemasonry . He was associated with the Royal Brunswick Lodge , which numbered amongst its members six Mayors of Brighton , and , though many might not think that a recommendation , he assured them that he and those associated with them in the government of the town were largely interested in the success of the Craft .

Bro . Jos . Farncombe , in responding , expressed his regret at the absence and illness of Bro . Gerard Ford . He had hoped the Provincial Senior Grand Warden ( Lord Algernon Gordon-Lennox ) would have been present to reply to the toast , but , personally , he esteemed it an honour to be asked to acknowledge it . Alluding to the difficulties

which were experienced in awarding Provincial Grand honours , he said he felt that the compliment ot asking him to take office a second time was a pleasing recognition of the fact that he had been three times elected Mayor of Lewes , and he therefore highly valued his appointment as Provincial Junior Grand Warden .

Bro . Lieut .-Gen . C . W . Randolph proposed "The W . M . of the Lodge , Bro . the Right Hon . Sir W . T . Marriott , Q . C , M . P . " He was deeply sorry , he said , that Bro . Gerard Ford was too unwell to be present to propose the toast , but he was sure all present would receive it with enthusiasm . He offered the W . M . the best wishes of himself and the brethren present , and felt that in his ( Bro .

Marriott s ) hands the Earl of Sussex Lodge would maintain its prosperity . The"W . M ., on rising to respond , was cordially received . He said _ he felt deeply grateful for the kind and heart y manner in which those present had received the toast . He

esteemed it a great honour to occupy the chair , and was especially pleased to see so large a gathering of the Worshipful Masters of the Sussex lodges—23 out of the 26 . At a meeting held on the previous evening , he had heard Sussex spoken of as " Silly Sussex ; " but he himself felt the terms " sensible" and "sound" to be more appro-

priate , for , as Freemasons , they were united , and knew the strength of unity . The honour conferred upon him as W . M . he regarded as another strong link in the chain that bound him to the town of Brighton . The kindness which he had received at all hands he highly prized , and he would endeavour to discharge the duties of his office with fervency and zeal .

Bro . W . H . Hallett , P . Prov . G . W ., proposed "The Visitors , " and coupled with the toast the names of the VV . M . of the senior lodge in the province , Bro . J . H . Hawes ( Union , No . 38 ); Bro . Sir VV . Tindal Robertson , M . P . ( of a Scotch lodge ); and two representatives of literature , Bros . Edmund Yates and Frank Harris . Bro . J . H . Hawes , in responding , said that he had never

before felt so deeply the responsibility attaching to the chair of the senior lodge in the province as he did on that occasion , when he was called on to respond to that toast in the presence of such a distinguished body of thebrethren . He would only for a moment interpose between the company and the distinguished brethren who were to follow him by saying that , on behalf of the lodge in Chichester ,

which vvas the cradle of Sussex Masonry , he congratulated the Earl of Sussex Lodge—the junior lodge on the provincial roll—upon the great prosperity which had attended its opening meeting , and hoped that that prosperity would long be maintained . Bro . Sir W . Tindal Robertson , M , P ., congratulated the Senior Member for the Borough on his appointment as

W . M . He , himself , had been unable to devote much time to Freemasonry , and felt that , in so large an assemblage of distinguished visitors , he , as a member of a Scotch lodge , had been highly honoured in being called upon to acknowledge the toast . Bro . Edmund Yates responded in a telling and humorous speech . He said it vvas well-known if one went into the

" quad" of Jesus ( the Welsh College ) at Oxford , and called for " Mr . Jones , " there vvould be but about two men only who would not put out their heads at the windows . He was reminded of this by seeing all thebrethren present rise when the toast of the visitors vvas acknowledged . He scarcely knew why he should be called upon , in such a distinguished assembly of brethren of all kinds , sizes ,

politics , and positions . Why should he , with his single , modest jewel , respond in the presence of his friend Parkinson with his blaze of jewels won in the battles ot the Freemasons' Tavern . Still he did respond heartily , and thanked the W . M . for the kindness which had welcomed him to that hall . He was proud to be asked to respond for the visitors , and to be noticed by so distinguished a Master .

To see Bro . Marriott , a distinguished member of the Government holding office and receiving no salary was but to realise the carrying out of the principles of Freemasonry to their highest point . Like their W . M ., he ( Bro . Yates ) could not endorce the terms "Silly Sussex , " but thought , from their sumptuous banquet and choice wines that evening , that " Southdown " or " Sillery " Sussex would

be more appropriate . Bro . Harris also responded . The W . M . proposed " The Past Masters of and in the Lodge . " Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , G . Sec , responded . He alluded to the visit of the Duke of Connaught to consecrate the lodge bearing his name , and his admirable work , which proved that their Provincial Grand Master was no

ornamental Mason , but one at heart . He congratulated the province upon having so distinguished a Provincial Grand Master . For his own part he had personally been associated with Sussex for the last seventeen or ei g hteen years , and should at all times be delighted to assist the Craft in the good old province . He concluded by expressing the hope that Bro . Ford would soon be with the brethren again . Bro . Lieut .-Gen . C W . Randolph also acknowledged the

toast . Bro . Gen . Ford claimed the indulgence of the meeting while he conveyed the deep regret of his brother , the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , at being unable to be present . The W . M . proposed " The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institutions , " to which Bro . Frederick Binckes responded , and " The Officers of the Lodge , " which was acknowledged

by Bros . R . Clowes , S . W ., and the Rev . E . R . Currie , J . W . The Tyler's toast completed the list . During the evening the various speeches vvere agreeably interspersed by a programme of vocal music ably sustained by Miss Minnie Freeman , Miss Amy Freeman , Miss Maud Bond , and Bro . Reginald Groome , under the direction of Bro . Dr . Alfred King , P . Prov . G . Org ., who gave the pianoforte accompaniments with his accustomed efficiency .

THORNE . —St . Nicholas Lodge ( No . 2259 ) . —The monthly meeting of this lodge was held on Wednesday , the 24 th ult ., when the chair of King Solomon was occupied by Bro . W . Delaney , I . P . M ., in the absence ofthe W . M . Mr . W . Walker was duly initiated , and Bro . F .
