M ., presided at the well-served banquet , at which the [ usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . Bro . H . G . E . Green , Prov . Grand Secretary , responded

on behalf of the toast of "The Provincial Grand Lodge . " He referred to the good work already done in the province by their esteemed chief , the Right Hon . W . L . Jackson , M . P . ; also to the recent very successful Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys at Brighton , at which the Prov . Grand Master had presided , when he was so Benerouslv supported by West Yorkshire . He also hoped

the brethren would support the Prov . Grand Master at the autumn meeting of Prov . Grand Lodge to be held at the Cutlers' Hall , Sheffield . Bro . Green reported that the esteemed D . P . G . M ., Bro . Henry Smith , P . G . D . England , had returned from his Canadian tour in excellent health , and had resumed his labours in the province . He paid a compliment to the retiring Master , who , he understood , had

had a very successful year of office , and he heartily congratulated the newly-installed Master on attaining the chair of the lodge . "The Masonic Benevolent Institutions" was ably proposed by Bro . S . A . Auty , P . M ., who referred to the great interest the Province of West Yorkshire took 'not only in the support , but also in the management of all the Masonic

Charities , He was also glad to be able to state that as the lodge was now deriving a benefit from the Girls' Institution , the lodge was doing its duty as regards the Charities . The lodge was proud very recently to have entertained as its guest Bro . George Heaton , 25 S , who had so generously purchased during the present year a perpetual presentation to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution .

Bro . J . Niven , P . M ., the representative of the lodge on the Provincial Charity Committee , and a Life Governor of all the Institutions , responded . He hoped the brethren would support him liberally during the coming year . "The Visitors" was submitted by Bro . E . P . Peterson , P . M ., who , on behalf of the brethren , gave a very cordial welcome to all the visitors who had on that occasion

honoured the lodge with their presence . Bro . Wheatley Jackson , W . M . 3 S 7 , in responding , expressed the pleasure it had given him to be present , when another old member and initiate of the Airedale Lodge , 3 S 7 , was installed into the chair of that lodge . He gave him his hearty congratulations . Bro . S . C . Dean , W . M . 1034 , and others also responded .

"The Retiring Master" was proposed by Bro . S . A . Bailey , P . M ., Treas ., and , in doing so , stated that Bro . Last had had a very successful year of office . There had been a great deal of work , and he was sure the retiring Master had discharged the duties of the chair to the satisfaction of the brethren . Bro . l . T . Last , I . P . M ., stated that he was extremely

gratified at the cordial manner with which the toast had been received . He regarded the remarks made by Bro . Bailey—usually a man of few words—in proposing the toast as a great compliment to himself . There had been 16 meetings of the lodge during the year , and nine initiates had been admitted to membership . I le thanked the officers for the assistance they had rendered , and the brethren for

the manner in which they had supported him throughout his term of office . Another very pleasant feature was the goodly number of visitors that had honoured the lodge during the year . He had experienced a very pleasant term of office , and it was with reluctance that he resigned the gavel to his successor , although he had every confidence in handing it over to such a worthy Mason as the W . M ., if

he had succeeded in discharging the duties of the chair during the past year to the satisfaction of the brethren he was more than repaid for any efforts he had made , and they all knew how much he had the well-being of the lodge at heart ; he had every confidence that the W . M . would have a successful year of office and would be well supported by all the officers and members of the lodge .

Bro . A . Stephenson , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , proposed the next toast , "The Worshipful Alaster . " He stated that as the senior P . M . of the lodge he had very much pleasure in introducing this toast as they had just installed a worthy brother into the chair , one who had creditably discharged the other offices he had held in the lodge , and who he was

sure would efficiently fulfil the duties of the chair for the comingyear . Bro . C . H . Ellis , VV . M ., remarked that he was gratified at the hearty manner in which thc toast had been received ; he would try to deserve the good opinion of the brethren , and his best efforts would be given to make bis year of . office successful . Several other toasts were duly honoured and a very pleasant evening spent , enlivened by songs and music by Bros . Sykes , Durant , Fearnley , Hanson , and others .

After a short interval the brethren sat down to a very enjoyable dinner , to which ample justice was done , after which the ordinary toast list was gone through , Bro . H . T . Nell , P . G . Bros . Thomas Tremaine , Jabez Piper , Alfred Iszard , and John Thomas Payne were passed by Bro . Ffrench Bromhead , P . M ., and Messrs . Arthur Satchell Wilson , Charles Pateman , and George Henry Barnes were initiated by the VV . M ., Bro . Nathaniel Fortescue , C . C . Afterwards Bro . Lennox Browne installed Bro . Richard Kershaw as the Worshipfu 1 Master of the lodge , the place of Installing

Master being kindly ceded to him by Bro . Fortescue , Bro . Lennox Browne having initiated B ' o . Kershaw in Freemasonry , and been a long and intimate friend of his . Bros . Fortescue was invested as I . P . M . ; James Speller , P . P . G . D ., S . W . ; Charles Bestow , J . W . ; William Shurmur , P . P . G . T ., Treasurer ; James Pinder , P . P . G . Shurmur the charge to the Warders and brethren . The lod » e was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to a choice banquet , and afterwards honoured the usual

toasts . Bro . Thomas J . Railing , P . A . G . D . C , Provincial Grand Secretary , replied to the toast of " The Grand Officers , " remarking that an immense impetus had been given to Freemasonry by the Prince of Wales becoming Grand Master . His Royal Highness took the position at a great crisis , when many brethren were very anxious for the welfare of the Craft . He was ably assisted by Lord Carnarvon and Lord

Lathom , and now the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe was doing his best to forward the interests of the Order . His lordship was going to take the chair at the next Festival of the Girls ' School . Some of the brethren present were specimens of what the Grand Officers were . One of them—Bro . Lennox Browne—who was the Installing Officer that day , had shown what Grand Officers could do . Bro . Lennox Browne was also a Past Provincial Grand Officer .

Bro . Kershaw next proposed " The Prov . Grand Master , Bro . the Earl of Warwick , " and , referring to the strides Freemasonry had made generally , mentioned the particular strides it had made in Essex . From Bro . Railing he had obtained the information that when Lord Brooke became Provincial Grand Master 12 years ago there were 19 lodges in Essex and S 66 subscribing members . There were now

3 S lodges and 1662 subscribing members . On the practical side of Masonry in the province , he might mention that when Lord Brooke was installed the county had subscribed to the three Charities £ 3009 , but up to the present time it had subscribed £ 13 , 809 . The William Shurmur Lodge could boast of having among its members two Past Provincial Grand Treasurers , two Superintendents of Works , a

Provincial Grand Organist , a Past Provincial Senior Grand Deacon , and a Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden , Bro . Lennox Browne , who initiated him in Freemasonry . Bro . Lennox Browne , in responding , said that it was quite impossible for himself or Bro . Shurmur to respond for the Prov . Grand Master ; his lordship ' s works in the province answered for themselves , and it would be mere

impertinence on their part to do more than express their gratification that his work in the province received such a striking exemplification that evening in the figures which had been placed before the brethren . As to the Deputy Grand Master , Bro . Philbrick , he only came back from a much-wanted holiday on Wednesday ( the 17 th ult . ) which prevented his now being present . The brethren , however ,

knew how thoroughly his heart was with them . As for himself ( Bro . Lennox Browne ) , hishonourscame largely by favour ; but he had done his best to deserve them , and he was quite confident that the favour he had had in Essex had been in a large measure a passport to the higher honours the Grand Master had been pleased to bestow on him . He could not forget how well he had been treated in

Essex . Certain brethren desired to name a lodge after him . He could not forget how , when he first came to Essex , he received great assistance from such brethren as Bros . Shurmur , Speller , Pinder , Bromhead , and Fortescue ; they had all contributed to his Masonic success . He was happy to say that all of them received honours at the hands of the Prov . Grand Master . The province was a reflec

reflection of Grand Lodge , and its Grand Officers a - tion of the Grand Officers . He congratulated the Masons of Essex on recognising the merits of the Prov . Grand Master , because if they did not they would not be worthy of their places . Bro . William Shurmur also responded , and said it was the earnest wish of all present that the Prov . Grand Master and Deputy Prov . Grand Master might for many years

continue in the offices they filled so worthily . Speaking as a Past Provincial Grand Officer , he was never tired ol thanking the brethren for the honour they had conferred on him in electing him Prov . Grand Treasurer . " earnestly hoped they would confer the same honour upon a distinguished brother of the lodge , Bro . Fortescue . H . considered it a great honour to nominate him for that position at the forthcoming meeting of the Prov . Grand Lodge

in 1 S 95 . Bro . Nathaniel Fortescue , I . P . M ., in proposing i »« toast of " The Worshipful Master , " said that although many brethren could propose the toast in better terms than he , no one could do it more heartily . All the brethren would admit they could not have had a better W . M . than Bro . Kershaw , and they must have been very glad to g « rid of him ( Bro . Fortescue ) when they saw how well )«»• Kershaw had worked the lodge and presided over tne banquet table . Nevertheless , he ( Bro . Fortescue ) »* j done what little he had done to the best of his ability . j > " he thanked the brethren for bearing with him . It gave W <" great pleasure to be there as their W . M ., and anything "

the manner in which they had supported him throughout his term of office .
