that he was a good one , and he hoped in due course he would become W . M . of that his mother lodge , and that all who were then there would be present to honour him when that event arrived . Bro . Rendell replied . He should never forget the beautiful ceremony of his initiation , nor the kind words of the VV . M . He was too young in the Craft to think of aspiring to the chair , but if ever lie came lo that high position he

hoped the W . M . would honour him , his first initiate , with his presence . The W . M . gave the toast of "The I . P . M ., liro . II . I ) . Kemp . " He s ' ated that he was always the one to give life to Masonic proceedings . He had had a happy year of office , and he felt sure the membeishad enjoyed themselves under his genial presidency . Bro . Kemp , who was well received , replied . He said

that the jewel he had received that night was a splendid token lor the very little he had done , and he hoped to be with them for many years to wear it . I le felt comfortable on the shelf of Past Masters , and did not think he should fall off . During his year of office he was dubbed as a great talker , but with his successor they would not have simply a talker , but a more than excellent worker of the ritual . In proposing "'ihe Visitors , " the VV . M . said that they

had a goodly array , and he gave them all a hearty welcome , coupling the names of Bros . Buck , G . Clark , Anning , Osterstock , and B . Bridgman . Bro . Buck responded . He said visiors were always pleased to take shelter under the Beacontree Lodge , and hoped all would receive instruction under such a good tree . The working they had witnessed was grand , and they appreciated the lavish hospitality of the members .

Bros . Clark , Anning , Osierstock , and Bridgnian also replied in some good and appropriate speeches . hi eloquent terms , the VV . M . gave " The Masonic Institutions , " remarking that he was going up as Steward for the Old People , and he earnestly hoped that the members would help to send him with a big list in amount . He coupled the name of Bro . James Mason , who had honoured them with his presence .

Bro . James Mason responded . He felt sure that when the W . M . ' s list went round the members would comply liberally with his request . He gave some interesting details of the three Institutions , and remarked that after 30 years' experience in the Craft that of the Old People was dearest to his heart , and he instanced several cogent reasons why the brethren should support the Old People to enable them to finish their few remaining years in

happiness . They were never in greater straits , and concluding a lengthy speech , given with great feeling , which was listened to with marked attention , he said give all you can afford and a little more , it would never be missed . The W . M . gave "The Past Masters and Installing Master , " making special reference to liro . Emden for his great services that day , and he coupled his name and that of Bro . Diwson's with the . toast .

In response , Bro . Dawson said that if the VV . M . needed any assistance the Past Masters would be happy to do anything . Bro . Emden also replied , It was a great pleasure to him to install Bro . Powter who was a good fellow . "The Treasurer and Secretary" having been duly honoured , Bro . Vile , Treas ., replied . That was the 26 th

installation meeting at which he had had to respond as Treasurer , and he hoped to do in the future as in the past . The next toast was "The Officers , " the VV . M . observing lhat he was proud of them , and they would give him every assistance . Bro . Wade , S . W ., responded . They were all working hard , and hoped before long to become shining li ghts under the Beacontree . Bro . G . Chillingworth , J . W ., also replied . He was

proud that he was nearing the chair of VV . M ., which was the height of his ambition to attain . The Tyler ' s toast brought to a close a most successful and pleasant meeting . The vocal and musical entertaiment was one of the very best and thoroughly enjoyed by all . The following took part : Mr . F . Faultless , Mr . Gladney WoliT , Master E . J . I ' owter ( son of the VV . M . ) , and Bro . VV . G . Churcher , who gained an enthusiastic and well-deserved encore for his great efforts . Bro . A . Smythson ably presided at the pianoforte .

and the lecture on the tracing board was delivered . Mr . A . E . Horstead , a candidate for initiation , was unavoidably prevented from attending through illness . Letters of regret for non-attendance were announced from the Prov . G Master , Dep . Prov . G . Master , Prov . G . Sec and others .

Permission was accorded Bro . Bird , P . M ., to form a lodge of instruction in connection with the lodge . Lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent repast , which was served in a manner reflecting the highest credit on Bro . Lander , the host . The usual toasts were subsequently given in a hearty

manner . Bro . T . I . Bird , P . P . G . S . B ., replied for "The Prov . Grand Master and Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " in an effective sprech , stating that the Prov . Grand Master had signified his intention of attending the Elliot Lodge installation meeting on the following Saturday , which was a further proof of the interest he took in the welfare of the province .

Bro . P . Young , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the W . M . " in a cordial manner , referring in complimentary terms to the working of the ritual in the lodge that day . Their VV . M ., he said , had had the experience of the duties of the chair in another lodge in the province , and that had doubtless served him in good stead in his present Mastership . If the same unanimity and good feeling hetween the members existed at the end of the year , the W . M . ' s term of office would indeed have proved a happy and successful

one . Bro . W . VV . Lee , VV . M ., briefly replied , expressing his indebtedness to the I . P . M . for his kind remarks , and his intention of exerting himself to the utmost to carry out his duties in a manner satisfactory to the members and creditable to the lodge . "The Visitors" having been heattily honoured . "The

Past Masters was responded to by Bro . Young , I . P . M ., in excellent style . Bro . T . I . Bird , P . M ., also replied , thanking the lodge for the permission given to start a lodge of instruction . He said it was his desire that thc new venture should not only prcve of assistance to the members , but also be a credit to the lodge .

Bro . J . Osborn , P . M ., Sec , replied for himself and his colleague , the Treasurer , and Bro . H . G . Banks , S . W ., effectively answered for "The Officers , " after which the Tyler ' s toast closed a very enjoyable and successful gathering . Bro . Bullock , the first Master of the lodge . The balance sheet of the lodge , which wis laid bifore the brethren and adopted , showed that the lodge was not only out of debt , but that it had a substantial amount of assets , an evidence

of the admirable manner in which the lolge has been conducted . After the preliminary business of the lodge had been transacted , Bro . Ransford installed Bro . George Emblin as Master of the lodge for tie ensuing year , and Bro . Ransford was invested as Immediate Past Master . Bros . D . Phillips was invested as S . W . ; T . W . Lightfoot

I ! ro . Ransford was presented with a handsome and valuable jewel of a Past Master , a gift which he gracefully acknowledged , and the brethren al : er , vards adjourned to a choice banquet , and honourel the customary toasts Bro ; . Woodrcf , Buxton , Nestle , Pink , and Aloore en'ivened the proceedings with capital music . Bro . Emblin , VV . M ., in pronos ng the toast of " The dud Master , " pointed out that during the Prince of Wales's Grand Mastership Masonry had made great progie •» , and warrants for 107 . 5 new lojVcs had been granted

during that time . He then proceeded to propose the toast of " The Masonic Charities , " and made a strong appeal to the brethren to support the three Institutions of the English Craft , informing them that Bro . Ransford was going to be Steward for the Sir Walter Raleigh Lodge at the next Festival of the Boys' School . He hoped all the brethren would support Bro . Ransford ' s list , but told them he would like to see every one of them individually a Life Governor for each Institution .

Bro . Ransford , I . P . M ., responded , and said Freemasons were banded together for the furtherance of Charity . The lodge had already supported Charity , and it ought to keep on pegging away . He exhorted the brethren to give whatever they possibly could without detriment to themselves or connections . The Masonic Charities were all well worthy of support . The present W . M . was the premier Steward

of the Girls and of the Boys' Institutions . For the Boys ' School he ( Bro . Ransford ) hoped all the brethren would give him something ; it would be thankfully received and faithfully applied . He next proposed " The Health of the W . M ., " who had given the brethren that evening a specimen of the admirable manner in which he could do his work . Bro . Emblin was a Past Master of a very old lodge—the

Lodge of Justice , No . 147—and in coming forward as one of the founders of the Sir Walter Raleigh Lodge , he had done his very , very best to further its interests . He would continue to do so as long as he lived . Bro . G . Emblin , VV . M ., responded , and said he could not lay claim to all the virtues Bro . Ransford had pointed out , but he could say he was second to no one in the interest

he felt in the lodge . He could assure the brethren , as he had often said before , that as far as his time permitted , he should be present at every meeting of the lodge and assist in doing its work . He admitted that he had been very zealous in Masonry in his time . He had passed through the chair of the Lodge of Justice , and had tried to establish correct working . He had taken up the large-t list for the

Girls' School , £ 2124 , and was the premier Steward of England . In iSgt , he took up £ ^ 0 for the Boys' School . He hoped he should meet with the support of the brethren again . But passing from this branch of his subject , whatever he could do for the lodge he should do ; he should try to do his work thoroughly , and long might the Sir Walter Raleigh Lodge live and flourish . After Bro . Winter had responded to the toast of " The

Initiate , " Bro . G . Emblin , W . M ., proposed "The Installing Alaster , Bro . Ransford , " who , he said , had done . a great deal for the lodge ; he assisted in bringing the members together , but he had now become I . P . M . His services had been so great to the lodge that the brethren unanimously voted him a Past Master ' s jewel , and it would be a great pleasure to him to present it . He hoped it would be ah honour to say "lima Past Masterof the Sir Walter Raleigh Lodge . " Bro . Ransford had richly earned the jewel , and it was to be hoped he would live many years to

wear it . liro . Ransford , I . P . M ., replying , said he promised when the lodge was first founded to do his best for it and for Freemasonry in general . The brethren would admit he had done all he could . He had tried to carry out his duties as well as Bro . Bullock , the lirst Master , who , throujh business engagements , was not able to be present on this

occasion . He did not wish any gentleman brought into the lodge who would not be a lit and proper person to be made a Mason . Under those circumstances , after the very nice language of the VV . M . about him and his performance of the ceremony of initiation , all he could say was that the

W . M . had the ability to follow him , and if each succeeding Master did the same , fifty years hence the lodge would not be very far wrong . He again thanked the brethren for the handsome jewel they had voted to him . The other toasts were afterwards honoured and responded to , and the brethren separated .

manner . Bro . T . I . Bird , P . P . G .

Bro . T . I . Bird , P .

W . ; T . W . Lightfoot
