His considerable powers ot organisation , his steady devotion to work , and his unswerving rectitude of purpose , gained him the respect and the regard of those under and with whom he worked , while his amiable and kindly nature secured their affection . Room was Secretary of No . 1159 from 18 S 3 , except while he was W . M . in 1 S 8 S . He was initiated in the Royal Hanover Lodge about 18 S 0 or iS 8 t , and was P . M . of Nos . 1777 , 1851 , and 2090 , P . P . G . Sec . Middlesex , P . A . G . D . C . ( R . A . ) , P . Z . of Nos . gi , 1159 ( and S . E . ) , and 1 S 51 . He was extremely popular among the numerous members of the Craft living in the county , and was held by them in very hirfi estimation .

W . BRO . C . H . DRIVER , P . G . S . OF W ., P . G . S . B . ( R . A . ) , F . R . I . B . A ., & c . We regret it should be our painful duty to announce the death of our wellknown and esteemed Bro . Charles Henry Driver . Until within the last four years , when he was absent from England at Santo Paulo , near Brazil , engaged on the work of designing and engineering the principal stations on the new Sao

Paulo Railway , he was accustomed to take an active part in Masonry , especially in the Mark Degree , of which he was P . G . W . He first saw the light of Freemasonry in the De Grey and Ripon Lodge , No . 905 , about 34 years ago . He was Master of this lodge , becoming afterwards joining member of several other lodges . He was exalted in the Crystal Palace Chapter , No . 742 , of which , in due time , he became M . E . Z . At the Queen ' s Jubilee year of 1 S 87 he received Past Grand

rank as Past G . Supt . of Works ( Craft ) and P . G . S . B . ( Royal Arch ) . He belonged to nearly all the side Degrees , having filled the chair , and being rewarded with Grand office in each , notably the Rose Croix , 18 and 32 , Great Priory of the Temple , Knight of Malta , the Allied Degrees , & c . He was a generous and liberal supporter of the Masonic Charities , took great interest in the Mark Benevolent Fund , of which , by his donations and support , he

became Patron . He acquired the knowledge and practice of the various Masonic rituals . He was ever ready to assist in the sacred cause of Charity , and his simple unaffected kindness to distressed Masons will long be remembered . His profession was that of architect and consulting and practical engineer . Amongst his architectural works we may notice the memorial monument to the late Earl of Ellesmere , at Worsley Hall , Lancashire , for which he furnished the design at

a competitive exhibition of architects . He also designed the Alamedi Masonic Hall at Gibraltar , carried out under his direction ; also the enlargement and reconstruction of the Mark Masons' Hall , in conjunction with Bro . R . Berridge , the well-known architect . He carried through many important engineering works at home and abroad , the last , in which he was actively engaged up to the

time of his fatal illness , was the Sao Paulo Railway at Brazil . He was very artistic in illuminating work , and excelled in the beautiful harmony of colour . The Queen , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , and ' other members of the Royal Family have specimens of his illumination . He was devoted to his profession , and was a true and worthy Mason .

BRO . COL . HEATON , P . M . 1260 , P . Z . 1260 . A well-known figure in the railway world passed away on the 25 th ult . in the person of Bro . Col . Heaton , V . D ., P . M . John Hervey Lodge , No . 1260 , P . Z . John Hervey Chapter , JTo . 1260 , chief London goods agent of the Midland Railway Company , in whose service he had been for more than 40 years . He took a prominent part in the Volunteer movement , working his way from the ranks to the proud position of Colonel-Commandant "f the 5 th ( West ) Middlesex

Volunteer Rifles . He resigned this commission a little more than a year ago , under the age limit . The funeral took place at Highgate Cemetery on Monday , nearly 1000 friends and brethren and railway men of all grades following their late esteemed chief to the graveside . An impressive service was conducted at St . Paul ' s Church , Camden-square , and there were beautiful wreaths , not only from almost every section of the staff in London , but also from the headquarters at Derby . Bro . Col . Heaton was in his 66 th year .

P ., a past master of the Poulters' Company , being elected the first Mayor of Greenwich .

HKR MAJESTY has forwarded , through Colonel Sir Fleetwood Edwards , her annual sulsciipticn of £ 50 to the Army and Navy Pensioners' Employment Society , of which she is patron . HER MAJESTY the Queen has been graciously pleased to make the following appointment to the Royal Victorian Order : To be a Commander , George William Buchanan , Esq ., C . B ., recently her Majesty's Charge d'Affairs at Darmstadt .

George Kenning and Son , of Little Britain . A sun OF £ 50 has been contributed by the South London Auxiliary to the Printers ' Pension , Almhouses , and Orphan Asylum Corporation . BRO . ARCHDEACON SINCLAIR has published a book entitled , " Unto You , Young Men . " It is" dedicated to the Undergraduates of the Universities .

BRO . THE ARCHDEACON OF LONDON , P . G . C ., will be the Canon-in-Residence at St . Paul ' s Cathedra ! during November , and will preach on Sunday afternoon at the 3 . 15 service . BRO . LORD GEORGE HAMILTON , Secretary of State for India , has accepted an invitation to attend the annual dinner of the Blackburn Chamber of Commerce on December 14 .

BRO . SIR H . WILLIAMSON ' S WILL . —The will of Bro . Sir Hedworth Williamson , Bart ., of Whitburn Hall , who died recently , has been proved in Durham District Registry . The gross value of the estate is £ 302 , 736 , and the net value £ 250 , 626 . BRO . ALDERMAN SIR WILLIAM TRELOAR , who has usually entertained 200 poor crippled children on Lord Mayor's Day , writes regretting that this year the procession will not pass his premises . He happily suggests that owners of premises on the line of route should step into the breach , and invite the children to witness the pageant .

THE INDIAN FAMINE FUND —The Mansion Hous ; Fund for the relief of the starving inhabitants of India amounted on the 30 th ult . to £ 382 , 000 . The box outside the Mansion House was cleared a day or two ago , and yielded £ 10 17 s . 6 d . The handsome sum of £ 4 62 13 s . 3 d . has been collected in 322 Board Schools in aid of the Fund .

HONOURING SIR REDVERS BULLER . —A number of the generals engaged in the South African campaign will be honoured by the City guilds on their return . We learn that General Sir Redvers Buller will be presented with the honorary freedom of the Skinners' Company , and that he has accepted an invitation to a banquet at Skinners ' Hall early in December .

THE FIRST MAYOR OF PADDINGTON . —It is stated that Bro . John Aird , M . P . for North Paddington , has received a letter signed by Sir George Fardell , M . P . for South Paddington , and all the duly-electtd Councillors representing Hvde Park Ward , asking him to allow them to nominate him as the first Mayor of Paddington on the new Borough Council . Bro . Aird has consented . AT A MEETING of the Senatus Academicusof the Ophthalmic College of Canada , held at Toronto on the ist ult ., it was unanimously decided to confer upon Bro . Dr . Charles Forshaw , of Bradfoid , their honorary degree in optics . The diploma came to

hand this week , and is a very handsome document . It will be remembered that a few months ago the Optical Institute of Canada at Montreal conferred on Bro . Dr . Forshaw a like degree . CARDIFF Y . M . C . A . CAMERA CLUB . —The annual meeting of this society was held on Tuesday , the 16 th ult ., when the officers for the ensuing season were eleeted , Bro . Dr . De Vere Hunt being the president . The club has the advantage of a splendid new building , recently opened , and which contains a spacious electrically lit dark room for the use of members of the club . The hon . sec . is Mr . J . E . Blackburne , 136 , Cathedral-road , Cardiff .

SUBSCRIPTIONS to the Women of Ireland Presentation Fund to Bro . Lord Roberts have been sent in by Irish women and wives of Irishmen , of all classes , most freely . Every sum has beep voluntarily offered . It is now proposed to close the lists on the 15 th instant , by which time a large amount will be in the hands of Lady Ashbourne , the hon . treasurer . The gift is to consist of a star of the Order of St . Patrick—Bro . Lord Robert ' s Irish decoration—in fine diamonds .

H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES , attended by Bro . Captain Holford , left Marlborough House on Tuesday morning to visit Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein at Cumberland Lodge , and returned to London in the afternoon . H . R . H . the Princess of Wales , accompanied by Princess Victoria , and attended by Miss Knollys and Vice-Admiral Sir H . Stephenson , arrived at Marlborough House in the evening . The Prince of Wales , with Bro . Captain Holford in attendance , met their Royal Highnesses at Charing Cross Station .

BRO . VISCOUNT WOLSELEY , presiding , on Tuesday , at a lecture on the war by Mr . Winston Churchill , spoke o £ the British officer as not only the finest specimen of humanity extant , not only the finest fighting man , but a man who was not to be equalled in the armies of the world . The Boer was admirably fitted by training for a soldier . He knew the average Boer fairly well , and he could bear witness to their excellence as hunters on the veldt and to their ability as fighting men , especially as regarded their keen eyesight , which gave them a great advantage over the soldiers in the British ranks .

ANONYMOUS BENEFACTION . —The Committee of the Shipwrecked Mariners ' Society having been compelled , owing to the effect of the War Funds , & c , to sell £ 6000 Consols in order to meet the current demands for relief , the Secretary ( Mr . G . E . ivlaude , 26 , Suffolk-street , Pall Mall East ) , has received from a well-known firm of solicitors in Lincoln ' s Inn Fields a cheque for £ 500 on behalf of a client , whose name they are not allowed to divulge , to assist the Society in its necessity .

CHRIST ' S HOSPITAL . —The annual sermon at Christ Church , Newgate-street , instituted in accordance with the will ( dated 166 3 ) of Mr . Thomas Barnes , a benefactor of Christ ' s Hospital , who desired in this way to commemorate the accession of Queen Elizabeth and the completion of the English Reformation , will be delivered by the Archbishop of Canterbury on Sunday , the nth inst ., at 11 a . m . The Archbishop of Canterbury , it is interesting to note , is the only surviving member of the Schools Inquiry Commission which reported on the constitution of Christ ' s Hospital in 186 S .

HONOURING SIR REDVERS BULLER . —A number of the generals engaged in the South African campaign will be honoured by the City guilds on their return . We learn that General Sir Redvers Buller will be presented with the honorary freedom of the Skinners' Company , and that he has accepted an invitation to a banquet at Skinners ' Hall early in December .

THE FIRST MAYOR OF PADDINGTON . —It is stated that Bro . John Aird , M . P . for North Paddington , has received a letter signed by Sir George Fardell , M . P . for South Paddington , and all the duly-electtd Councillors representing Hvde Park Ward , asking him to allow them to nominate him as the first Mayor of Paddington on the new Borough Council . Bro . Aird has consented . AT A MEETING of the Senatus Academicusof the Ophthalmic College of Canada , held at Toronto on the ist ult ., it was unanimously decided to confer upon Bro . Dr . Charles Forshaw , of Bradfoid , their honorary degree in optics . The diploma came to

hand this week , and is a very handsome document . It will be remembered that a few months ago the Optical Institute of Canada at Montreal conferred on Bro . Dr . Forshaw a like degree . CARDIFF Y . M . C . A . CAMERA CLUB . —The annual meeting of this society was held on Tuesday , the 16 th ult ., when the officers for the ensuing season were eleeted , Bro . Dr . De Vere Hunt being the president . The club has the advantage of a splendid new building , recently opened , and which contains a spacious electrically lit dark room for the use of members of the club . The hon . sec . is Mr . J . E . Blackburne , 136 , Cathedral-road , Cardiff .

SUBSCRIPTIONS to the Women of Ireland Presentation Fund to Bro . Lord Roberts have been sent in by Irish women and wives of Irishmen , of all classes , most freely . Every sum has beep voluntarily offered . It is now proposed to close the lists on the 15 th instant , by which time a large amount will be in the hands of Lady Ashbourne , the hon . treasurer . The gift is to consist of a star of the Order of St . Patrick—Bro . Lord Robert ' s Irish decoration—in fine diamonds .

H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES , attended by Bro . Captain Holford , left Marlborough House on Tuesday morning to visit Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein at Cumberland Lodge , and returned to London in the afternoon . H . R . H . the Princess of Wales , accompanied by Princess Victoria , and attended by Miss Knollys and Vice-Admiral Sir H . Stephenson , arrived at Marlborough House in the evening . The Prince of Wales , with Bro . Captain Holford in attendance , met their Royal Highnesses at Charing Cross Station .

BRO . VISCOUNT WOLSELEY , presiding , on Tuesday , at a lecture on the war by Mr . Winston Churchill , spoke o £ the British officer as not only the finest specimen of humanity extant , not only the finest fighting man , but a man who was not to be equalled in the armies of the world . The Boer was admirably fitted by training for a soldier . He knew the average Boer fairly well , and he could bear witness to their excellence as hunters on the veldt and to their ability as fighting men , especially as regarded their keen eyesight , which gave them a great advantage over the soldiers in the British ranks .

ANONYMOUS BENEFACTION . —The Committee of the Shipwrecked Mariners ' Society having been compelled , owing to the effect of the War Funds , & c , to sell £ 6000 Consols in order to meet the current demands for relief , the Secretary ( Mr . G . E . ivlaude , 26 , Suffolk-street , Pall Mall East ) , has received from a well-known firm of solicitors in Lincoln ' s Inn Fields a cheque for £ 500 on behalf of a client , whose name they are not allowed to divulge , to assist the Society in its necessity .

CHRIST ' S HOSPITAL . —The annual sermon at Christ Church , Newgate-street , instituted in accordance with the will ( dated 166 3 ) of Mr . Thomas Barnes , a benefactor of Christ ' s Hospital , who desired in this way to commemorate the accession of Queen Elizabeth and the completion of the English Reformation , will be delivered by the Archbishop of Canterbury on Sunday , the nth inst ., at 11 a . m . The Archbishop of Canterbury , it is interesting to note , is the only surviving member of the Schools Inquiry Commission which reported on the constitution of Christ ' s Hospital in 186 S .
