The lodge being opened , the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . The ballot was then taken on behalf of two gentlemen for initiation , and they being in attendance , were duly admitted to the Order by the W . M . in an impressive manner . The petition of a distressed P . M . of the lodge praying to be recommended as a candidate for the benefits of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution was signed .

The Secretary reported the death of Bro . Austin , M . M . of No . 1512 , and a P . M . of a Colonial lodge under the English Constitution , when it was unanimously resolved to support the petition of his widow to the Board of Benevolence . Apologies for nonattendance were received from Bros . W . Fisher , P . M ., P . A . G . P . ; P . Cronin , P . M . ; G . Tagg , P . M ., P . P . G . P ., and others . Refreshment followed labour .

Bro . T . W . Ockenden , P . P . G . D ., responded on behalf of " The Provincial Grand Officers" in a speech of some merit , and in which he gave an interesting resume of the progress and history of the province since he was initiated in the Hemming Lodge in 1874 . "The Health of the W . M . " was submitted by the I . P . M . In the course of his

speech he said that he thought the W . M . was going to have a maiden year of office , but , fortunately , two candidates had presented themselves that evening , and well and worthily had the W . M . discharged his duty . Bro . Gale was an old initiate of the lodge , and had steadily worked his way up to the topmost rung of the Masonic ladder . This toast having been warmly received , the W . M . briefly replied . The toast of " The Initiates " followed . '

The initiates , in their respective replies , expressed their acknowledgments for the warmth of their reception , and stated how impressed they had been with the ceremony of induction . They also each thanked their respective proposers and seconders for the trouble they had taken on theit behalf . " The Visitors " toast followed , and it having been duly acknowledged , "The Health of the Past Masters" was gi » en in flattering terms by the W . M ,

Among other kind expressions he particularly desired to convey to them his thanks for the cordial support and advice that they had always extended to him during the period that he had been an officer of the lodge and as W . M . He was pleased to see there that night the oldest initiate and one of the oldest Past Masters in the person of Bro . Ockenden , whose response on behalf of the . province that evening had been so eloquently expressive . He should couple the toast with the names of Bros . C . Wheatley , G . Ransford , and VV . Hopkins .

These brethren having responded , the toasts of " The Treasurer and Secretary " and " The Officers " terminated the proceedings . During the evening Bros . Aspinall , Singer , Chilcott , Bolton , and others entertained the brethren .

had been strongly marked in no ordinary way , and that every brother who aspired to the high position he held and appreciated , must envy the I . P . M . 's success as the W . M . of the lodge . In presenting him with a Past Master ' s jewel from the brethren of the lodge , Bro . Miles added that that privilege he considered a great one , for on every side very high encomiums had been deservedly passed on the way the ceremonies in the lodge had been conducted .

The Installing Master , Bro . Bailev , replied to the toast of "The Past Masters . " " The Visitors . " was ably responded to by Bros . Thomas , P . P . S . G . W ., and Bril , 20 G 0 . The W . M . next proposed " The Officers , " and said that he was to be congratulated on having a zealous body of brethren to officiate with him , and that he confidently looked forward to a successful year of office with their good help and assistance .

Bro . Barclay , S . W ., responded , and assured the W . M . on behalf of his colleagues that nothing would be wanting on their part to gain the terms of praise accorded to the toast . The musical arrangements , under the able guidance of Bro . Gervas Cooper , Org ., comprised solos from Miss Florence Ogilvy , Miss Nicholson , Bros . Cooper , G . Leonard Jones , Mr . Walter Hengler , and a c injuring entertainment by Bro . Baron von Buch , all of which were much appreciated .

Altogether the installation night of the Chaucer Lodge was most successful , and if , at the end of the proceedings , the brethren unanimously thanked the W . M ., they themselves are to be congratulated on having at their head for the ensuing 12 months such a popular and earnest Mason as Bro . W . Miles . Special mention must be made of the programme , upon which the name of each officer was followed by a quotation drawn from Chaucer , referring to his duties , as may be seen in the following reproduction : W . M . — " And gladly would he learn and gladly teach ; " I . P . M . — "A better envied man was nowhere named ; " S . W . — " He was a

very perfect knight ; " J .
