might have to do . He felt sure that if their W . M . only had the support and assistance of his oflicers and the brethren , and if they brought him plenty of work , he would be found quite equal to his predecessors in the chair of that lodge . He called upon them to drink the toast heartily . The W . M ., who was cordially greeted when he rose to respond , said he could assure them that he should do his utmost in carrying out the duties of the position in

which they had placed him , and he hoped to their satisfaction . Their I . P . M . had asked them to give him ( Bro . Frooms ) their support and assistance during his year of office , and he trusted they would , for without it no Master could expect to make his year a prosperous and successful one . He heartily thanked them for their kindness to him , and resumed his seat amid cheers .

The next toast was that of " The Installing Officer , " who , the W . M . said , had performed that important ceremony in a most impressive manner . Those of the brethren and visitors who were fortunate enough to have witnessed the ceremony must have been struck with the perfect knowledge their esteemed Bro . Eades had of the work ; at least , it seemed so to him ( Bro . Frooms ); but from the congratulations that had been showered upon Bro . Eades by the P . Ms , present , he had perfect faith that Bro . Eades had done his work to their satisfaction . He then presented Bro . Eades with a handsome and valuable Past Master ' s jewel , suitably engraved , and wished him many years of health and happiness to wear it .

Bro . Eades , after the applause had subsided , said their W . M . had completely taken the wind out of his sails by his kind remarks . All he could say was that since his connection with the Borough of Greenwich Lodge he had had the most earnest desire to aid its prosperity and to reach the proud position he now held as one of its P . Ms . He was the second initiate that had occupied the chair cf K . S . in that lodge , and while he did not think that he had arrived there by his own merits ; he had to thank the Preceptors of their lodge of instruction for all he knew , and if he had

. . leased them , or at least satisfied them , by the manner in which he had that day discharged the duties of Installing Officer , it was to the instructions that he had received from the P . Ms , and Preceptors of their lodge of instruction that the credit was due . He thanked them for their presentation to him of that handsome Past Master's jewel he now wore on his breast ; and if they thought he was worthy of it he should always prize it , and wear it as one ofthe proudest achievements of his life—that of being aP . 1 . of the Borough of Greenwich Lodge , and wearing the jewel of that rank .

The toast of " The Initiate" followed , and the W . M ., in putting it , spoke of the splendid manner in which Bra . Thomas , P . M ., had that day initiated his third son ; and he had assured him ( the W . M . ) that there was another to come presently into their lodge . If their initiate only followed in the footsteps of his esteemed father he would be a credit to the Order , and achieve the proud position his father held at the present time , not only in that lodge , but in the other Degrees in Freemasonry in which he was so well known and held prominent positions .

The candidate having suitably responded , Bros . Jolly and Saunders responded for "The Visitors , " and thanked the brethren of the lodge for the Masonic treat provided for them , and also for their unstinted hospitality at the social board . The toast of " The Charities " was given and well received , and a good account of the Benevolent Fund in connection with the lodge was received with applause .

"The Past Masters , " "The Officers , " and the Tyler ' s toast , concluded a pro gramme well carried out . The singing was above the average , Mrs . T . Frooms , and Bros . J . Fowler , H Simmons , A . Matthams , Capt . G . F . Fishenden , P . M . ; and W . Powley , contributing to the harmony , and all went well .

The other brethren invested as officers for the year were Bros . C . H . I . Ransford , S . W .,- Thomas Rayner , J . W . : G . Ransford , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B . Middx ., Treas . ; W . H . Maier , Stewards ; T . H . Yeldham , Org . ; and H . Evenden , P . M ., Tyler . A valuable jewel was presented to the outgoing Master , Bro . Lowry , and a vote of thanks was passed to Bro . Lane for the musical entertainments he had provided for the lodge . An elegant banquet was afterwards enjoyed , and the customary toasts followed , accompanied by a charming musical entertainment , the executants of which were Mr .

T . H . Yeldham , Org ., Miss Kate Rowlands , Mr . Albert J . Robsrts , Miss Edith Payne , Mr . Ben Albert , Mr . A . Lucas , and Mr . Tom Mulroy . The W . M ., in proposing the toastof " The Queen and the Craft , " said there was a wonderful appropriateness in the combination of the Queen and the Craft . He did not know if it had ever struck anybody that there was a close connection [ between the two , but the Queen was the Queen and Empress | of an empire on which the sun never

set , and Freemasonry was universal . Therefore such a toast as the two combined was most appropriate . In proposing the toast of "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " the W . M . fa id H . R . H . ihe Prince cf Wales presided at the Centenary Festival of the Boys' School on June ioth , and £ 141 , 000 was collected , and no other man in the world could have raised such a sum .

The toast which last week would have been ' * The Pro Grand Master , the Dep . Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " was drunk in silence , on account of the death of Uro . the Earl of Lathom . The VV . M . feelingly referred to the sad circumstance , and said that it would ill become Masons if they allowed the event to pa < s unnoticed . Bro . Lowry , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the W . M . " ( Bro . Bates ) , and in

doing so said that when the brethren drank the health of the Dep . G . Master and the Grand Oflicers they did so not knowing them personally , but when the toast of the W . M . was proposed they knew that brother personally . As they were quite aware , he was the Preceptor of several lodges of instruction . With Bro . Bates ' s Masonic knowledge , he would be a great acquisition to ths lodge as its Mister . No brother could excel him , and it was to be hoped he would live long to be an honour to the Sir Walter Raleigh Lodge .

Bro . W . F . Bates , VV . M ., replied . The I . P . M ., he remarked , had referred to his ( the W . M . 's ) connection with lodges of instruction , and he could assure the brethren that nothing gave him more pleasure than to attend those lodges . He was very proud of being the Master of the Sir Walter Rr . Ieigh Lodge , with which he had been connected since its consecration . He had done his best for it , and had worked through all its offices . In the appointment of officers he had studied the opinions and feelings of the P . Ms ., and he thought that it was what W . Ms , elect ought to do , although the rule was that the W . M . could act as he liked . In conclusion , the W . M . proposed "The Installing Master , Bro . W . Klingenstein , P . M . "

Bro . Klingenstein replied , and thanked Bro . Lowry , I . P . M ., for giving him the opportunity of installing Bro . Bates as Master of the lodge . He was sure , he said , that the brethren would be satisfied with the selection they had made . The other toasts were those of " The Masonic Charities , " responded to by Bro . Parkins , the Sec . of the Masonic Charitable Association attached to the lodge ; and "The P . M ' s ., Treasurer , and Secretary . "

The other brethren invested as officers for the year were Bros . C . H . I . Ransford , S . W .,- Thomas Rayner , J . W . : G . Ransford , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B . Middx ., Treas . ; W . H . Bullock , P . M ., Sec . ; Rev . R . J . Simpson ,

P . G . C , Chap . ; A . b . Beniamin , S . D . ; Oscar C Moore , J . D . ; A . F . Jones , I . G . ; G . Emblin , P . M ., D . C . ; H . Cosins , E . H . Grahnert , W . C . Lightfoot , and S .
