The remainder of the evening was devoted to harmony , Comps . G . F . Peek , J . S . Pells , E . de Jausserand , and E . Dunderdale contributing good songs . The great success of this memorable evening is undoubtedly due to

Comp . J . B . Nickolls who organised the whole affair—including the musical portion of the ceremony upstairs , and the banquet downstairs . To him is due the very warm meed of praise for the admirable manner in which he carried out everything with such marked results , everyone departing thoroughly satisfied with all he had seen , heard , and tasted that evening .

It augurs well for the zeal and courage of the Jersey companions that they crossed to Guernsey in the face of a strong north-east gale , and returned the following morning in a furious hurricane of wind and rain , with the heaviest sea running which has been experienced round these islands for

some years . The regalia and clothing for the Prov . Grand Chapter were manufactured by Comps . George Kenning and Son .

B ., M . E . Pro Grand Z ., an event which has occasioned the profoundest sorrow to every member of the Craft , by whom he was so greatly beloved , it is ordered that the Grand Chapter and all subordinate chapters be placed in Masonic mourning for the space of six months from this date .

B ., Loid Chamberlain of Her Majesty ' s Household and . 1 member of Her Majesty ' s Privy

Council , Most Puissant Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council 33 ° of England and Wales and the Dependencies of the British Crown , Pro Grand Master of England , and Provincial Grand Master of West Lancashire , which took place on the 19 th of November , at Lathom House , Ormskirk He filled the important office of the Most Puissant Sovereign Grand Commander from the nth October , 1876 , working with constant zeal for the good ofthe Ancient and Accepted Rite , and it is hardly necessary to dwell on the merits of

one who held such a prominent position in Engish Freemasonry , and who was so widely known and universally beloved . The members of the Supreme Council with whom the deceased was so intimately associated for so many years are confident that the whole body of Freemasons will share their grief at the loss of so valued a ruler , who will always be remembered with affectionate regard . LADIES NIGHT OF THE HOLLOWAY LODGE , No . 2601 .

It was , indeed , a night of nights , and was certainly a great success , and the W . M ., Bro . H . 'J . Macfarlane , P . M ., P . P . G . Org . Surrey , and his able Stewards , Bros . Gordon Lamer , H . B . Wedlake , W . P . King , and Warren Faraday , are to be commended and congratulated upon the result of their efforts , which gained the

unanim ous commendation of the members of this excellent lodge and of their ladies and friends wh o had the good fortune to be present at the pleasant gathering at Be ale ' s Restaurant , Holloway-road , on the 16 th ult ., that the aptly described ladies ' night was perfection . Ladies , brethren , and their friends to the number in all of about So assembled on the occasion .

At half-past 6 o clock the W . M ., Bro . Macfarlane and Mrs . Macfarlane received the large gathering , and a dispensation having been obtained forthe brethren to wear Masonic clothing , this , with the very charming costumes of ths ladies , gave the room a very effective appearance .

Ample time having been given for introductions and genial conversation , the company adjourned to a recherche banquet , which reflected the highest possible credit on the establishment , and will add to its reputation for Misonic repasts . It was admirably served under the personal superintendence of the proprietor , Bro . Beale , who was most assiduous in looking after the comfort of all .

The W . M ., Bro . Macfarlane , presided at the banqueting table , having on his right his charming wife , and was well supported by the oflicers of the lodge . The toast list was commendably short , the gathering being intended to be devoted to amusements more congenial to the ladies than speech-making . In eloquent terms the W . M ., Bro . Macfarlane , gave " The Queen and Freemasonry , " which was duly honoured . He afterwards submitted the toast of " The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales . "

The ladies , at this point , having graciously intimated that the male kind could indulge in the fragrant weed , they were each presented with a handsome box of chocolates , as a substitute for a cigar , which it is needless to record they appreciated . The W . M ., in proposing " The M . W . the Pro Grand Master , the R . W ., the Dep . Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Oliicers , Present and Past , " said that the ladies might think it a dry toast , but it was a very important one to

Freemasons . The Grand Officers were composed of noblemen and gentlemen who were appointed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , and were the governing body of English Freemasons . Lord Kitchener of Khartoum was one of the Grand Oliicers , and he was given a pressing invitation to attend that evening , but he had written regretting his ability to attend . The W . M . read the letter which was as follows : " 17 , Belgrave-square , " November 1 ith , 1898 .

" Lord kitchener of Khartoum deeply regrets that owing to a previous engagement of long standing he is compelled to forego the pleasure of accepting the kind invitation of the Worshipful Master and Wardens , Holloway Lodge , for Wednesday , the 16 th inst . " Masons were proud to have Lord Kitchener as a member of the C raft , and they would have liked to have seen him there . They were honoured that night

with the presence of one Grand Officer , Bro . J . Terry , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . B . L ( Great applause . ) He ( the W . M . ) could keep them there for the rest of the evening extolling his virtues and the great things he had done for the Craft , but it was not necessary , as he was so well known . He was most genial , and if any one had given happiness in the world Bro . Terry had , and he was delighted to see him there , accompanied by Mrs . and Miss Terry .

The toast was drunk with the greatest enthusiasm , and Bro . TERRY was accorded quite an ovation on rising to respond . He said that no words of his could express adequately what all English Masons felt towards the M . W . Pro Grand Master and the R . W . the Dep . Grand Master for their great services to

the Craft , and they were the two prominent Grand Oliicers whom Masons looked up to . As to the other Grand Officers , they must take him as a poor sample ; but he hoped always to be able to do his duty as a Grand Officer . The remainder cf his remarks were made in a very humorous strain , which elicited roars of laughter .

Bro . FRED VARLKY , LP . M ., said it was his privilege , duty , and pleasure to propose "The Health of the W . M ., Bro . Macfarlane , " which was the toast of the evening , but he felt he could not do it justice . The W . M . had referred to the Grand Oliicers but Bro Macfarlane was equally important to their ! as their Master . He was supreme , could do no wrong , and they were very proud of him

as he was a very able man of business and a good Mason . The jewels he wore were evidence of the great deal he had done for the Craft , and it was one of the highest honours in Masonry to get into ^ the chair . He would like to say more but they had a long programme to get through , and , concluding , he referred to the presence of Mrs . Macfarlane , who was a good wife and an estimable lady and the lodge was honoured with her charming company .

The toast was drunk with acclamation , and the W . M ., Bro . MACFARLANE , on rising to respond , had a great reception . . He said that his sincere thinks were due to them for the kind reference made to his wife , and he wished he was worth half only of the nice things said of him . He would do his level best for the lodge , and do his utmost to have a similar gathering every year . Might he mention that in July last the members presented his wife with a handsome silver cradle on the occasion of the birth of a daughter , during his year of ollice , which was very gratifying to them both .

The toast of " The Ladies , " was entrusted to Bro . J . TERRY , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . B . L , who , in eloquent and appropriate terms , heartily welcomed the ladies * who had honoured the Holloway Lodge with their presence .

At half-past 6 o clock the W . M ., Bro . Macfarlane and Mrs . Macfarlane received the large gathering , and a dispensation having been obtained forthe brethren to wear Masonic clothing , this , with the very charming costumes of ths ladies , gave the room a very effective appearance .

Ample time having been given for introductions and genial conversation , the company adjourned to a recherche banquet , which reflected the highest possible credit on the establishment , and will add to its reputation for Misonic repasts . It was admirably served under the personal superintendence of the proprietor , Bro . Beale , who was most assiduous in looking after the comfort of all .

The W . M ., Bro . Macfarlane , presided at the banqueting table , having on his right his charming wife , and was well supported by the oflicers of the lodge . The toast list was commendably short , the gathering being intended to be devoted to amusements more congenial to the ladies than speech-making . In eloquent terms the W . M ., Bro . Macfarlane , gave " The Queen and Freemasonry , " which was duly honoured . He afterwards submitted the toast of " The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales . "

The ladies , at this point , having graciously intimated that the male kind could indulge in the fragrant weed , they were each presented with a handsome box of chocolates , as a substitute for a cigar , which it is needless to record they appreciated . The W . M ., in proposing " The M . W . the Pro Grand Master , the R . W ., the Dep . Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Oliicers , Present and Past , " said that the ladies might think it a dry toast , but it was a very important one to

Freemasons . The Grand Officers were composed of noblemen and gentlemen who were appointed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , and were the governing body of English Freemasons . Lord Kitchener of Khartoum was one of the Grand Oliicers , and he was given a pressing invitation to attend that evening , but he had written regretting his ability to attend . The W . M . read the letter which was as follows : " 17 , Belgrave-square , " November 1 ith , 1898 .

" Lord kitchener of Khartoum deeply regrets that owing to a previous engagement of long standing he is compelled to forego the pleasure of accepting the kind invitation of the Worshipful Master and Wardens , Holloway Lodge , for Wednesday , the 16 th inst . " Masons were proud to have Lord Kitchener as a member of the C raft , and they would have liked to have seen him there . They were honoured that night

with the presence of one Grand Officer , Bro . J . Terry , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . B . L ( Great applause . ) He ( the W . M . ) could keep them there for the rest of the evening extolling his virtues and the great things he had done for the Craft , but it was not necessary , as he was so well known . He was most genial , and if any one had given happiness in the world Bro . Terry had , and he was delighted to see him there , accompanied by Mrs . and Miss Terry .

The toast was drunk with the greatest enthusiasm , and Bro . TERRY was accorded quite an ovation on rising to respond . He said that no words of his could express adequately what all English Masons felt towards the M . W . Pro Grand Master and the R . W . the Dep . Grand Master for their great services to

the Craft , and they were the two prominent Grand Oliicers whom Masons looked up to . As to the other Grand Officers , they must take him as a poor sample ; but he hoped always to be able to do his duty as a Grand Officer . The remainder cf his remarks were made in a very humorous strain , which elicited roars of laughter .

Bro . FRED VARLKY , LP . M ., said it was his privilege , duty , and pleasure to propose "The Health of the W . M ., Bro . Macfarlane , " which was the toast of the evening , but he felt he could not do it justice . The W . M . had referred to the Grand Oliicers but Bro Macfarlane was equally important to their ! as their Master . He was supreme , could do no wrong , and they were very proud of him

as he was a very able man of business and a good Mason . The jewels he wore were evidence of the great deal he had done for the Craft , and it was one of the highest honours in Masonry to get into ^ the chair . He would like to say more but they had a long programme to get through , and , concluding , he referred to the presence of Mrs . Macfarlane , who was a good wife and an estimable lady and the lodge was honoured with her charming company .

The toast was drunk with acclamation , and the W . M ., Bro . MACFARLANE , on rising to respond , had a great reception . . He said that his sincere thinks were due to them for the kind reference made to his wife , and he wished he was worth half only of the nice things said of him . He would do his level best for the lodge , and do his utmost to have a similar gathering every year . Might he mention that in July last the members presented his wife with a handsome silver cradle on the occasion of the birth of a daughter , during his year of ollice , which was very gratifying to them both .

The toast of " The Ladies , " was entrusted to Bro . J . TERRY , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . B . L , who , in eloquent and appropriate terms , heartily welcomed the ladies * who had honoured the Holloway Lodge with their presence .
