MASONIC BENEVOLENCE IN 1895 .
Though the total of the sums received by the several Masonic Institutions during the year which ended on Tuesday , the 31 st ult ., is less than that for 1894 , the diminution is to be attributed to accident rather than to any falling off in the support they
receive from the Craft . Indeed , the Returns for the three Festivals reached a somewhat higher figure during the year that has just come to an end than during its predecessor , and as these Returns are as trustworthy a guide in estimating the
disposition of the brethren towards our Chanties as the amount of their receipts , it is evident that the reduction in the latter must be due to the cause we have suggested . A little less Association Money has fallen due during the
year , or donors and subscribers have found it convenient to take a little longer time than usual in paying over the donations and subscriptions they have promised . Still , though the aggregate is less , the totals compare very favourably
with those of 18 94 . Thus in the latter year the amount received by the Boys' School was £ 24 , 186 16 s . Sd . ; by the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , £ 20 , 7 8235 . nd . ; and by the Girls' School , £ 20 , 043 7 s . id . ; giving a total for the three
Institutions of £ 65 , 012 7 s . 8 d . The figures for 18 95 are as follow , viz .: Boys'School , £ 22 , 696 18 s . id . ; Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , £ 21 , 720 ios . 6 d . ; and Girls' School , £ 18 , 211 os . 6 d . ; the total of the three amounts being £ 62 , 628 gs . id . The most
important heads of Receipt are , naturally , the " Donations and Subscriptions , " and if we compare the sums received under this head , with the final totals for the Festivals , we shall have every reason to be satisfied . Thus , as regards the Boys' School , the
Festival Returns , exclusive of the two Presentations , amounted to £ 19 , 248 16 s . 7 d ., while the Donations and Subscriptions received during the year reach £ 20 , 508 14 s . id . ; for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , the Returns finally reached
£ 14 , 690 13 s ., while the Donations and Subscriptions are ^ ' 5 ) 753 I - 6 d . ; and for the Girls' School , the Festival yielded £ 16 , 016 6 s . 6 d ., and the Donations and Subscriptions received are £ I 5 » 7 7 8 s . There is . therefore , as we have said , every
reason to be satisfied with the general evidence which both sets of Returns afford of the determination of the great Body of English Masons to keep the Institutions amply supplied with the funds necessary to their maintenance in their present condition of
efficiency ; and if it has happened in the ordinary course of fluctuations that the 18 95 Receipts are less by some £ 2500 than those of 18 94 , they are still some £ 3500 to the good as compared with the 18 93 Returns .
The following are the Statement of Receipt with which we have been favoured by the Secretaries of our Institutions , and from which we have been quoting in the foregoing remarks ;
