Provincial Meetings.

After the numerous visitors had given "Hearty good svishes" the lodge was closed . During the evening two very handsome jewels svere presented—one to the I . P . M .. Bro . Savage , and the other to Bro . James An re \ v for his long and faithful services as Charity Representative and Treasurer . In doing the latter , Bro . Wm . T . Schofield , P . M ., P . P . I . G . D ., Treasurer , stated that he had great satisfaction in

presentingto Bro . Andresv , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., a Charity jesvel for his-services for 17 years as Charity Representative of thc lodge , and gave a very interesting account of their mutual svork for-the lodge during the last 20 years , and hoped that Bro . Andresv might be long spared to svear that beautiful jesvel , and to represent the Iodge as Charity Representative . Amidst many tokens of approval from the members , Bro .

Schofield fixed the jesvel on Bro . Andrew ' s breast . Bro . Andresv , its reply , said : It is very pleasing to receive a token of recognition for services rendered , but it has always loeen a pleasure to svork in and for the Strangesvays Lodge , and I am proud to represent No . 1219 on the Charity Committee , for 1 can truthfully say that No . i 2 iyhas always done svell . Last year £ 26 9 svas placed to our credit in the report of the Systematic , besides £ 24 contributed by

members . This year 1 , 125 HIS . has been contributed to the Systematic , and £ 52 ios . to the Aged Freemasons . It is only right to mention that a portion of the money paid this year svas really due for the previous year , as £ 170 had been received for initiation and joining fees in iSyi . It is one of the privileges of old men to look upon the past . There is not one ofthe founders of the lodge leftj 19 members have died , and 11 also dead svho had resigned , making 30

deaths ; 66 have been excluded and 94 resigned , making a total of 179 ; and now sve have above 90 members . Allosv me to say a svord svith regard to the Systematic . We have good cause to blosv our osvn trumpet—" actions speak louder than svords "—and I believe sve are at the head of th : province in the amount of our subscriptions , and I can testify that our osvn Charity has done nobly in helping poor and distressed Masons and svidosvs , besides educating

children . It is proposed to extend the benefits by granting annuities of £ 26 per annum to our candidates for the London Charities until elected . I n a recent return a ppeared GS old men candidates and only 19 vacancies , 84 old svomen and only 11 vacancies in the London Institutions . Our scheme svill be a great help to our own candidates . If the province svill still support the Systematic as in the past our Prov . G . Master will be delighted to foster this nesv

project of annuities . For nine years I have been one of the Auditors of the systematic , and I may tell you that £ 11 , 102 is nosv invested . This svill shosv you that a good foundation is made for the relief of our distressed brethren , svidosvs , and children . Accept thanks for the beautiful jewel . 1 shall appreciate this memento of my connection with Strangesvays Lodge as long as I live . I am very glad to . see Bro . Chadsvick , the Prov .. G . Sec , present . He has

svorked nobly on behalf of the East Lanes . Systematic , and years ago sve talked of working to raise £ 10 , 000 . He nosv rejoices , as I do , that sve have £ 1100 beyond , and now an effort must be made to raise another £ 10 , 000 for the nesv AsstsusW Fssssd . Agasts I thank you for your Charity jesvel , and svill work on as long as able to do so . Bro . Chadwick , Prov . G . Sec , who had a very cordial reception , expressed his satisfaction that Bro . Andrew ' s

services had been recognised by the lodge as Charity Representative , and he bore testimony to the continuous and long efficient svork done by Bro . Andresv at the Charity Committee . The jesvel svas a combined Charity , Treasurer , and Past Master's jewel , svith suitable inscription engraved thereon . At the banquet , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts svere given and responded to in a most enthusiastic

manner . The following svere present : Bros . J . Lacey Savage , VV . M . ; A . H . Battye , I . P . M . ; James Robinson , S . VV . ; VV . O . O . Wilkinson , J . VV . ; VVm . T . Schofield , P . Master into the Iodge . The Prov . G . M . having entered the lodge svith his officers , he svas saluted , as svas also his Deputy , Bro . J . E . Le Feuvre , P ^ stG . D ., after svhich the Prov . G . M . assumed the chair , and the out-going- VV . M . presented to him the W . M . elect , Bro . Alexander Hosvell , to receive at his hands the benefit of installation . Th ^ Prov . G . M . performed the ceremony of installation in his usual fluent and most impressive manner . The new W . M .

then appointed and invested his officers as f illows : Bros . I . J . Suter , I . P . M . ; R . J . Waterman , S . VV . ; VV . Bacon Fo < -den , J . W . ; C . VV . Bevis , P . M ., Treas . ; William Baker , Sec ; Herbert H . Keeping , S . D . ; W . E . Duck , J . D . ; Lieut . Thomas Cosvd , P . M ., P . G . S . B ., D . C . ; F . Pearse , M . D ., I . G . ; James Crockerell and Charles F . Brown , Stsvds . ; and J . Exell , Prov . G . T ., Tyler . On the proposition of the VV . M ., seconded by Bro . Cowd , a hearty

vote of thanks svas acco .-ded to the Prov . Grand Master for attending and svorking the ceremony . The Prov . CM . having thanked the brethren , the lodge svas closed . The brethren then adjourned to the banqueting room , svhere thc Worshipful Master presided at a banquet svhich did credit to the cuisine of the Freemasons' Club . Each guest svas provided svith a menu card and toast list svhich

attracted considerable attention , not only for the striking originality of its composition , but also for its beauty as a piece of line art printing . Round each margin were printed appropriate <* uotations—poetical and othersvisc . In each corner svas given one of the Masonic attributes , and the menu , toast list , and list of officers svere interspersed svith other characteristic quotations . The svhole svas designed by the nesv W . M .

The usual loyal and Masonic toasts svere given from the chair , and the Dep . Prov . G . M ., Bro . | . E . Le Feuvre , in responding for "The M . W . Pro . Grand Master , the R . VV . Deputy Granel Master , and the Present and Past Officers of Grand Lodge , " adverted to the functions of Grand Lodge , and strongly advised brethren svho svere cjualifieed to exercise the privilege of attending . He also alluded to the very large sums , closely approaching £ 100 000 , svhich had

been raised for Masonic Charities during the past tsvelve months , remarking that they could not expect to raise so much during the coming year , but they must all hope that the Festival of the Benevolent Institution svould suffer as little as possible because of the generosity of the past . Hc then referred to the great interest which the new VV . M had taken in all branches of Freemasonry , as also in the literature relating to the Craft , and svith reference to svhich

the new W . M . had done so much as the local secretary in Hants to the Ouatuor Coronati Correspondence Circle , an institution of svhich he could not speak in too high terms , as to it they osved so much of svhat they knesv about the history of Freemasonry . Their nesv VVorshipfuI Master had svorked hard to spread a knosvledge of that institution throughout the province , and although only a comparatively young Mason , he had done svork for the Craft of svhich he

might sve'l be proud . The Worshipful Master , in proposing the toast of "Thc R . VV . Provincial Grand Master , " said that no words svere necestary in a meeting of Hampshire Masons in introducing the name of Bro . Beach . His name svas svell knosvn to all of them , and he svas highly esteemed for his unfailing courtesy , and for the great interest svhich he took in all Masonic matters . His character svas svell summed up in the couplet svhich appeared under the

toast" To those svho knosv thee not , no svords can paint ; And those svho knosv thee , knosv all svords are faint . " The Provincial Grand Master , in responding , expressed the great pleasure svhich it gas'e him to attend that day , and to install their VV . M ., in svhom he recognised a most zealous Mason . He said that the great efforts svhich had been made in the cause of Charity during the past year were unexampled in the history of the Order , and he

impressed upon the brethren that Charity consisted not only in giving , but in putting the best construction upon thc conduct of a brother , not judging him harshly , but judging Masonic love into the scale . He urged them to adhere to the principles bequeathed to them , and to maintain them in their integrity . Bro . tbe Rev . H . E . Belts , Prov . G . Chap ., responded to the toast of "The Provincial Grand Officers" in an

amusing speech , and described his feelings as akin to those of the Iron Duke , svhose svords— "After prolonged study and research , 1 have come to thc conclusion that toasts svere devised to give a man svho has nothing particular to say , an opportunity of saying it "—had been so appropriately placed by their W . M . at the head of the toast list . He congratulated thc members of the lodge upon having such an excellent Mason as Bro . Alexander Howell to rule over

them , and expressed the opinion that their VV . M . had given them a foretaste of the masterly svay in svhich hc svould render the ritual of the Order svhen he gave the several addresses upon investing his ofiicers . The I . P . M ., Bro . J . J . Suter , gave the toast of "The Worshipful Master" in eulogistic terms . The W . M ., in reply , said that the reception they had

given them svas a very happy commencement to his year of ollice as Master of the lodge . He svas not insensible either to the distinguished honour svhich had been conferred upon him or to the difficult position in svhich he svas placed as the responsible ruler of a lodge . That poiition svas one not to be taken svithout mature thought and consideration , and he trusted that he svould be enabled to carry out the various duties of the office in sur . h a manner as tn bp

creditable to himself and to give satisfaction to the members of his lodge . He said that the Master ' s svork , as laid do . vn in their ritual , svas in itself a nutter of considerable moment , and to be able to render the svork in a satisfactory manner svas no light task for a Master to take upon himself . But , after all , that ought not to be his highest ambition . Undoubtedly a Master ought to strive to so render thc ritual as to bring out every one of the many beautiful

precepts svhich it contains , and to thoroughly impress them upon the candidate . 'That svas his first duty , but not his only one . He thought that a Master svas expected to beand ought to do his utmost to tpialify as—a teacher or instructor of Masonry , as distinguished from the ritual of Masonry . A man might be a most advanced Ritualist ( of

course , he said , he used the svords in a Masonic and not Ecc ' csiastical sense ) svithout knowing anything about Masonry . Some years ago , svhen he svas Secretary of the lodge , svhenever there svas no ordinary " svork " to do a lecture or paper upon some Masonic subject svas read , anil he . never found that the brethren cvincoil any svant of interest in the subject , but , on the contrary , many and

Provincial Meetings.

many had been the letters svhich he had received asking for further information upon the subjects brought before tbe lodge . The course then commenced he proposed to continue , and he S'entured to predict that if the lodge should unfortunately not have a simile candidate during his year of office , the brethren of the lodge svould not have cause to complain that their lodge nights svere entirely wasted . After

dilating upon the injunction laid upon iniliat . es to " make a daily advancement in Masonic knowledge , " the W . M . remarked upon thc impossibility of carrying it out if the means sverc not provided , and made an urgent appeal to the Masters of lodges meeting in the neighbourhood of Portsmouth , some sixteen in number , to assist him in the foundation of a good Masonic library , to svhich they might

refer their candidates for the means of gaining that knowledge svhich they so strongly enjoined them to acquire . Other toasts followed , the preiceedings being interspersed svith harmony , to svhich Bros . G . F . Lancaster , H . Love , C . VV . Bevis , and T . VV . Haydon contributed . There svere present , besides the Prov . G . M ., the Dep . P . G . M ., thc W . M . and the officers of the lodge svhose

D ., I . vote of thanks svas acco .-ded to the Prov .
