sketches of the old lodges , and interesting information as to these old lodge lists ; "Pocket Companion for Freemasons , London , 173 * 3 ; " " MS . Sections , zfflj-, Cratt , Arch , aird K . T . ; " "Masonic Funeral Sermon , " preached at Rochdale , 12 th July , 1807 , by Cro . Rev . | no . Rutter ; Marvin ' s "Masonic Medals ; " Lodge Histories ; & c , & c . The selection of Masonic medals comprised 75 specimens from Bro . Newton ' s cabinet , and included English , Scotch , AmericanFrenchBelgian , Dutch , German , and Italian medals ,

, , many being exceedingly rare and curious . In the course of his remarks , Bro . Newton referred to the Masonic exhibitions held within the last few years at York , Worcester , Shanklin , and Plymouth ( catalogues of which exhibitions he exhibited ) . By means of these exhibitions principally he attributed the greater interest now taken by the brethren in the study of Masonic arclueology . Another great impulse was given by the establishment , in 18 S 4 , of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 2076 , and its

Correspondence Circle , now numbering upwards of 600 members . He heartily recommended snch of the brethren who wished to know something of the past history of the Craft and its antiquities to become members of the Correspondence Circle . The lecturer then referred to his forthcoming work on the " History of Freemasonry in East Lancashire , " and gratefully acknowledged the co-operation given him by numerous brethren in supplying information for the purpose . He had to deplore one unfortunate

fact , and that was , that the greater number of old lodges did not seem to possess any old records , or , at all events , very fragmentary ones , and impressed upon the brethren present the absolute importance of carefully treasuring up their old minute books and other records in fire-proof depositories . Bro . Newton also pointed ont the great service which would be rendered to Masonic Students by the publication of histories of the older lodges ; much valuable information would thereby be gained as to Masonic life in years

gone by , which could not f nil to be highly interesting . He also referred to the valuable services rendered in the cause of Masonic literature within the iast 20 years by many distinguished writers , notably Bros . Hughan , Gould , Woodford , Murray Lyon , Whytehead , Lane , Yarker , Riley , Sadler , and others . His own library embraced nearly 250 volumes of Masonic literature , and he might say that no part of his Masonic work had given him more pleasure than that of the study of Masonic arch .-cology , save , and except ,

the Masonic Charities . Bro . Newton then proceeded to explain his principal exhibits . The lecture and explanation were listened to vvith marked attention , and were evidently highly appreciated . At the close , a cordial vote of thanks was moved to the lecturer by Bro . J . H . Sillitoe , P . P . J . G . W ., which was seconded by Bro . E . W . Irving , P . G . Stwd ., and carried by acclamation . In acknowledging the vote of thanks , Bro . Newton said , if his lecture and interest and research

exhibits had the effect of inducing a deeper into Masonic antiquities and history , he vvould feel himself amply repaid . A vote of condolence vvas passed to Bro . W . J . Cunliffe , P . P . G . D ., on the heavy bereavement he has recently sustained in the loss of his wife . Bro . N . Nicholson , Prov . S . G . D ., was unanimously elected W . M . for the next meeting , which vvas fixed to be held in September . Several brethren were proposed as joining members , and the lodge vvas closed .

PRINCE FREDERICK WILLIAM CHAP TER ( No . 753 ) . —The companions of this chapter , on their assembling at Lord ' s Hotel , on the 24 th ult ., were painfully shocked by the announcement that their Secretary and oldest member , Comp . F . G . Baker , P . Z ,, had died the day before , after a short illness , from congestion of the lungs and feeble heart . It is impossible to describe the consternation experienced . Comp . Baker had by his

great energy and continuous labour raised the chapter from one of common place to the highest pitch of Masonic working . He established a chapter of instruction many years since , and weekly acted as Preceptor . He never lost an opportunity of enforcing on the officers the dignity and high importance of their official duties , and vvould devote hours of labour in teaching others , his own store of Masonic

ritual being perfect . As Secretary , he so managed to win the affection of companions and Principals , that a resignation after passing the first chair was unknown , and it would be difficult to find higher trained Masons than the Past Principals of this chapter , all due to his unselfish love and energy . A better illustration could not be found than that caused by his death , which suddenly threw the working

of the chapter out of its usual order , and the M . E . Z . vvas absent through illness . Comp . Rowe , P . Z ., exalted four candidates vvith unfailing accuracy , and Comps . Duffin , Kempton , and Thomas vvere equally perfect . Then followed the installation of Principals , which Comp . Hill , P . Z ., at the shortest notice undertook , and well proved his mastership over difficult

ceremonies by the perfection of his working . A letter of condolence to Comp . Baker ' s family vvas ordered to be sent . Comp . Slyman , P . Z . and Treas ., proposed , and Comp . Hill , P . Z ,, seconded , that the following should be recorded on the minutes of the chapter , which vvas carried amidst universal grief and gloom : — "The members of the Prince Frederick William Chapter

desire to have placed on their minutes ihe universal grief vvith which they heard of the death of their oldest member , Comp . Frederick George Baker . P . Z ., which took place on the 23 rd , at Elm Lodge . His irreparable loss has shed a gloom over all their proceedings , and they feel it impossible to record their regrets in sufficiently powerful terms to perpetuate his merits . They have lost the father of the

chapter — ( heir talented Preceptor , their constant companion—their guide and their friend . His business habits and rectitude of conduct as Secretary constituted a rock which vvas unassailable , and his gentleness of manner and untiring energy as a teacher established his fame not only

amongst the members of the chapter , but throughout the N . W . district . He was always ready and willing to impart from his marvellous store of Masonic knowledge , and never more pleased than when his pupils vvere successful . Officers , Principals , and companions all mourn the loss of one they can never hope to replace . —24 th April . "

hoped he should prove deserving of the honour that had been conferred upon him . The M . E . Z . then proposed " Thc Installing Princi pal and I . P . Z ., Comp . Dehane , " alluding to the eminent qualities he possessed as a R . A . Mason , and the manner in which he had performed his duties the whole time he had belonged to the chapter , and more especially durinr *

the past year , and , as a token of the esteem and regard of the companions , he ( the M . E . Z . ) had great pleasure in affixing to his breast the handsome P . Z . 's jewel of the chapter , and hoped he might live many years to wear it . Comp . Dehane , in reply , thanked the companions for the great kindness and assistance he had received from them all , and felt highly flattered at the compliment they

had paid him by voting him the handsome jewel of the chapter , which he should always prize as a souvenir of their good wishes . He vvas pleased to say he handed over the affairs of the chapter—as evinced by the report of tho Auditors—in a prosperous condition , and so' left a fair field for his successor . Comp . West responded on behalf of "The P . Z . 's , "

and regretted that , through illness and other causes , there vvere so few present , but vvas sure all were ready to afford assistance and instruction when required . He also alluded in terms of considerable pride to Comp . Dehane , who , he said , had followed in the footsteps of the last fonr or five P . Z . ' s , and installed his successor . With such companions

to guide the M . E . Z ., he felt the chapter would go and prosper . The toast of " The H . and J . " vvas responded to by Comp . Cumming , and "The other Officers" by * Comps . Baxter and Canderlier . The Janitor ' s toast followed , and concluded the proceedings .

Other business having been transacted , the chapter vvas

closed . At the banquet which followed , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts vvere duly honoured . Comp . Elliott , P . Z ,, proposed in eulogistic terms "The Health of Comp . Addington , M . E . Z ., " saying , however , that the fact of his unanimous election to the chair would of itself be sufficient reason for all to receive the toast

with enthusiasm . Comp . Addington responded . The M . E . Z . proposed "The P . Z . ' s , " enumerating all they had done for the chapter , and Comps . Elliott , Hilton , Williams , and Grummant responded . Comp . Crook , J ., responded to the toast of "TheH . and ] . "

Comp . Elliott proposed "The Treasurer and S . E ., " expressing , in a very flattering manner , the great respect in which their Treasurer , Comp . Major Williams , P . Z ., and his son , their S . E ., Comp . Capt . C . W . Williams , P . Z ., vvere held by all the members . They vvere pleased that their Treasurer vvas able to be absent , and in a warmer clime , for it vvas very wise for him to guard his health , and so ensure the continuance of his very valuable services .

Their S . E . was a worthy son of a worth y father . Comp . Capt . Williams responded , as did Comps . Benedetti , S . N . j C . Fleck , P . S . j C . sketches of the old lodges , and interesting information as to these old lodge lists ; "Pocket Companion for Freemasons , London , 173 * 3 ; " " MS .

Comp . Crook , J ., responded to the toast of "TheH . and ] . "

N . j C . Fleck , P . S . j C .
