BARNSLEY—Portal Lodge ( No . 127 ) .-The installation meeting of the above lodge took place at the Masonic Hall , Eastgate , on Thursday , the 25 th ult ., Bro . C . W . Fincken , W . M ., P . G . D . C , in the chair . The Iodge having been opened , and the minutes of the previous meeting confirmed , the Treasurer read his annual report , which proved to be of a very satisfactory nature . The

W . M . then , in very appropriate and feeling terms , proposed that a vote of sympathy be forwarded to the family of the late Bro . the Rev . G . Raymond Portal , after whom this lodge was named , and who was also an honorary member thereof . This vvas seconded by Bro . E . J . Massie , P . M ., P . G . S . O ., Sec , who read some letters from our late Bro . Portal , which he received from him at the formation

of the lodge , and which showed the very great interest their late brother took in the lodge . The P . G . Master of West Yorks then entered the room , and vvas saluted . Bro . Edwin Billington was then presented to the W . M . to receive at his hands the benefits of installation , and , in due course , placed in the chair of A ., and saluted . On Friday evening , the 26 th ult ., the Grand Master of Scotland and a deputation of Grand Lodge office bearers paid a visit to the Provincial Grand Lodge of Glasgow . The Provincial Grand Lodge vvas opened in the Pillar Hall of the Queen ' s Rooms , Bro . "VV . J . Easton , D . P . G . M ., presiding , and the Wardens' chairs were occupied by Bro . J . Kelso Hunter , R . W . M . 27 , acting as P . S . G . W ., and Bro .

G . H . McNaught , P . J . G . W . The ACTING P . G . M . then called upon the Prov . G . Sec , Bro . David Reid , to produce tbe Grand Lodge commission appointing Bro . John Graham , C . A ., of Broadstone , as P . G . M . of the province . The deputation from Grand Lodge vvas then admitted with full honours , and the Grand Master was at once desired

to occupy the throne . Grand Lodge fordoing him the honour of occupying their throne , and expressed the great pleasure it gave to himself and the Grand Lodge deputation to find the books of Prov . Grand Lodge , which they had just thoroughly examined , so

excellently kept , and to find the Prov . Grand Lodge doing their work so heartily and in full conformity vvith Grand Lodge constitutions . He then called upon Bro . John Graham to assent to the various charges peculiar to the office of Prov . G . Master ' s office , and then conducted him to the throne . The GRAND MASTER then addressed the brethren , and

in the course of his remarks spoke of the valued service which had been rendered to the cause of Masonry by the late Sir Wm . Pearce , by whose lamented death the vacancy just filled had been caused . He had no doubt , however , that Bro . Graham , who had already done yeoman service to the Craft , would maintain the dignity of his office , and carry on the good work .

The PROV . GRAND MASTER , after thanking the brethren for the great honour conferred upon him , then closed the Iodge . 'I he deputation vvas thereafter entertained by the Prov . Grand Lodge to a banquet , in a hall adjoining the lodgeroom . Bro . John Graham , P . G . M ., acted as Chairman . After dinner , the CHAIRMAN gave the toast of "The

Queen and the Craft , " which vvas enthusiastically received . The next toast , also from the Chair , vvas that of the "Princeof Wales , Patron of the Grand Lodge . " The Chairman remarked that that toast had a double claim on their acceptance , as the Prince vvas not only the Grand Master Mason of English Freemasonry , but he vvas also an affiliated member of Scottish Masonry .

The CHAIRMAN then gave the toast of the evening"The Grand Lodge of Scotland "—coupled vvith the name of the Grand Master , Sir ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL , of Blythswood , who in the course of his remarks , which vvere received with frequent interruptions of applause , said : The Grand Lodge of Scotland was erected in 1736 , and St . Clair of Rossline was elected first Grand Master , having

previously renounced any hereditary right that he or his heirs had to that position . Since then Masonry had extended very much over the whole of Scotland , and from time to time illustrious noblemen and gentlemen had filled the chair of the Grand Lodge , but none more worthily or acceptably than the present Grand Master—our honoured guest this evening . Among the earliest visitations by the

Grand Master to Glasgow vvas that of the late Duke of Athole , about 40 years ago , for the special purpose of installing that eminent lawyer and historian , Sir Archibald Allison , as Provincial Grand Master . The next visitation to Glasgow was by the late Bro . Whyte-Melville , who made a grand visitation to St . Mark ' s Lodge on the occasion of a centenary celebration . In the following year the

late Earl of Dalhousie made a visitation . Afterwards Sir Michael Shaw-Stewart , also the late Earl of Mar and Kellie , and now Sir Archibald Campbell . At a stage in the history of Grand Lodge there vvas discovered some very serious mismanagement , involving very large pecuniary loss j but he vvas proud to think that after the loss had been wiped away , Grand Lodge at the present moment stood

clear of all debt , with heritable , movable , and charitable funds of over £ 40 , 000 . The reformation took place in 1 S 77 , when Sir Michael Shaw-Stewart vvas Grand Master , but much of the laborious work fell upon their present Grand Master , who took an active part in bringing about a proper settlement of affairs . Since then , in his position as Substitute Grand MasterDepute Grand

, Master , and now Grand Master , they owed in a great measure the present position ot the Grand Lodge , and the Glasgow City Province esteemed it both a privilege and an honour to entertain Sir Archibald Campbell as the Grand Master Mason of Scotland . Had it been possible , they should have been equally pleased to have entertained Lady

Campbell , vyhose favour for the Craft was well known , and whose services and interest in the approaching grand Masonic bazaar in aid of our annuity fund will be fraught with great good to that Charity . He was pleased indeed in having had the honour that day of being installed as Prov . G . M . ot Glasgow by Sir Archibald Campbell , whose

forbears have been long and intimately connected with this great city . Through his paternal ancestry , the Douglases of Main , that connection dated back to the middle of the 14 th century , and through the Campbells of Blythswood since the 17 th century . The town house of Blythswood was situated in the Bridgegate , and , although given up for about 100 years as a town house , it was not

so very long ago since the house and gardens vvere all destroyed , and are now occupied by the City Union Railway Company . Sir Archibald ' s name in Glasgow vvas as a household word . He was ever ready to forward any scheme which might be for the good of the people , and vve have proof of this in the success of last year ' s Exhibition , which must have taxed his energies to the utmost , but which was

a grand success . May he be long spared as a county magistrate and as a member of Parliament to perform his arduous duties , and , should further honour be conferred upon him , the Glasgow City Province of Freemasons vvould heartily rejoice . Bro . Sir ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL , in acknowledging the enthusiasm vvith which the toast had been received , said he

thought the reason why the toast had been so well received vvas due to the fact that they reckoned him as one of themselves , and that they knew he had the interest of the great city at heart . There vvas one thing he desired to refer to at this meeting , and that vvas that the rivalry which seemed to exist between the lodges in the east and west of Scotland should be buried . They were an imperial people—not

parochial—and speaking for himself he rejoiced in belonging to an imperial race that had girdled theworld . It was their duty to uphold the tenets of their Order and to carry from one end of the world to the other that civilization that was freedom but not license . He wished every man to speak out , but he also wished them to take broad views , and he asked those who had so much power to take a deeper interest

in Masonry and Grand Lodge . Bro . Sir ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL then gave "The Provincial Grand Lodge of Glasgow , " coupled vvith the name of its Prov . Grand Master . The Province of Glasgow vvas one of the largest under the Grand Lodge , and vvith the 34 lodges under its jurisdiction vvas a great power for good . The duties of Prov . Grand Master over such a large

province might be very irksome under some circumstances , but he thought Bro . Graham need have no cause for fear , as he had as strong a set of office bearers as any Grand Master could desire to reign over . He congratulated the brethren on having chosen such a worthy man and Mason as Bro . Graham as their chief , and trusted he vvould long be spared to fill the office with honour to himself and dignity

to the Craft . The toast was pledged amidst great applause . The PROV . GRAND MASTER , in replying , said he vvas sorry that his esteemed superior officer , up till that day , the Depute Master , Bro . Easton , did not see his way to accept of the position of Prov . G . M . In his opinion he vvas more suitable for the office , and had greater experience of the

working of the province than he had . The City Province of Glasgow had been up till now a thoroughly united province . It had not the largest number of lodges , but in point of number of members and representation of all grades of society , manufactures , trades , and professions , it was second to none in importance . It was interesting to note that although the office of Prov . G . M . was created

two years only after the erection of Grand Lodge , it was not till the beginning of the present century that we find Prov . Grand Lodges mentioned as organised bodies under Prov . Grand Masters . The Glasgow lodges vvere at first ( ' 739 ) placed under the jurisdiction of the brother having charge over the " west country lodges . " This province embraced Glasgow , Hamilton , Dumbarton , Lesmahagow ,

Greenock , Lanark , Kilmarnock , Inverary , and Kirkintilloch . In 175 ( 1 , Hamilton of Dalserf succeeded Collector Mollison as Prov . G . M . In 176 9 an ex-provost of Glasgow ( Murdoch ) vvasmadeProv . G . M . overthecountksof Lanark , Renfrew , Ayr , Dumbarton , and Argyll . On Provost Murdoch ' s death , Houston of Jordanhill vvas . in 1795 , appointed as Provincial Grand Master . Then , early in the century , the

provinces vvere re-arranged , Glasgow being placed in Under Ward of Lanarkshire , with Sir John Stewart of Allanbank as Provincial Grand Master . In 1806 , Sir John laid the foundation stone of the Nelson monument in Glasgow Green . In 1813 , the designation of this province vvas again changed to " Glasgow and Under Ward of Lanarkshire , " with Bro . Maxwell , younger , of Pollok , afterwards

Sir John Maxwell , as Provincial Grand Master . In 1826 , Sir John was appointed Provincial Grand Master of East Renfrewshire , and his successor was Bro . Menteith pf Carstairs , commissioner in 1 S 27 . In this year the Lodge Thistle and Rose got into grief for having , as a lodge , walked in procession to a theatre and patronised a play . Then , nearer our own time , they had had as Provincial

Grand Masters Sir Archibald Allison , the Historian of Europe , appointed on Bro . Monteith ' s resignation in 1 S 47 . Then the designation " of the province was again changed to " Glasgow Province . " On Sir Archibald's death , Bro . Spiers oi Elderslie , vvas appointed , and on his death Col . W . Montgomery Neilson of Queenshill , and on his resignation the late Sir William Pearce , during whose

reign the foundation stone of the new Municipal Buildings vvas laid by ex-Lord Provost Ure under his supervision . Bro . ANDREW MCNAIR , R . W . M . No . 4 , gave the next toast , which was that of "The Sister Provincial Grand Lodges , " and expressed the great pleasure it gave the hosts to see such a large gathering of visiting brethren from the outlying provinces .

Bro . Captain H . F . MCLEAN , Prov . G . Master Lanark Upper Ward , made a suitable reply , and thanked the Prov . Grand Lodge for inviting his colleagues and himself to be present at such an impressive and important gathering . The other toasts were "The Retiring Commissioned Officers of the Provincial Grand Lodge , " proposed by Bro . R . F . SHAW STEWART ,

and responded to by Bro . WM . J . EASTON . " The Grand Secretary , " proposed by Bro . Colonel P . STIRLING , of Kippendavie , and replied to by Bro . D . MURRAY LYON .
