Old People to the benefits of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution is Mrs . Mary Cooke , 40 , Wilson-road , Camberwell , the widow of Bro . Charles J . Cooke , a well-known London journalist . This is the second application . The case is urgent , and the subscribers cannot do better than send their votes to Mrs . Cooke , who is supported by the Gallery or Press Lodge , No . 192 S , and other brethren .

Ihe Masonic Chanties Association connected with the Barnato Lodge of Instruction will be commenced on Monday evening next , the 6 th inst ., at 7 o ' clock , at the Victoria Hotel , Charterhouse-street ( corner of Farringdonroad ) , when the attendance of brethren wishing to join is requested .

succession to the late Earl of Mar and Kellie . There vvas a large attendance of the brethren . A number of officebearers vvere also installed to office in the Provincial Grand Lodge . A well-known marksman , Bro . Colour-Sergeant W . H . Hobbiss , of the South Middlesex R . V ., and formerly of the Bromsgrove Company of 2 nd Worcester , was , on

the 25 th ult ., installed W . M . of the South Middlesex Lodge , 858 . The installation ceremony vvas performed by Bro . Major C H . Reid-Todd . Frederick ' William Lodge of Instruction , No . 753 , on Tuesday , the 23 rd ult ., at the Eagle Tavern , Clifton-road , Maida Vale , VV ., the Secretary received notice of the death of the esteemed Preceptor , Bro . F . G . Baker , P . M ., P . Z ., which melancholy event took place at 2 . 30 p . m . that day , and the members present passed a vote of condolence with the family of the deceased brother , and the lodge was closed .

We have been requested to place our readers on their guard against a person giving * the name of Edward Clarke , engineer , who describes himself as having been initiated in St . John's Lodge , No . 70 , Plymouth , in 1 S 65 , and who is going round the country gathering whatever he can from unwary charitable Masons . A brother who has been visited by this impostor is our informant , and he

writes to the effect that he has communicated vvith Lodge No . 70 , and has been told that there is no such name as that of Edward Clarke , engineer , on the books . On Monday evening , Bro . the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress entertained at dinner in the Egyptian

Hall of the Mansion House a large number of distinguished guests , including the Chinese , Greek , and Brazilian Ministers , Bro . T . M . Waller , Consul-General of the United States , and many other Consuls and Consuls-General , Bro . Sir T . W . Ellis , Bart ., M . P ., and Bro . Alderman Sir H . A . Isaacs .

King-Harman , Under Secretary for Ireland , and first member of Parliament for the Thanet Division of the County of Kent , vvas presented to the Corporation and Burgesses of Ramsgate on Monday . We understand that the office of Provincial Prior of Kent and Surrey , which has been rendered vacant by the lamented death of General Brownriirs * . C . B .. is about

to be conferred on Col . Haldane , the Prov . Sub-Prior . We regret deeply to hear that Bro . Eckersall , VV . M . 217 , has been confined to his bed , through meeting with an accident while taking a little exercise in his garden on Saturday , the 20 th ult ., and trust that he will soon be restored to health again .

THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a time when much thought is being given to this matter , a practical suggestion may be of service . Last year more than £ 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased by inconsiderate consumers in this country , so true is it

that " evil is wrought by want of thought , as well as want of heait . " If all consumers vvould purchase Bryant and May's Matches , that firm vvould be enabled to pay £ 1000 a week more in wages , and large numbers of the unemployed of East London vvould thus be provided vvith work , instead of swelling the ranks of pauperism . —ADVT .

At the regular meeting of the Vigne Rose Croix Chapter , held on Friday last , at Bournemouth , twocandidates were perfected , after which the P . M . W . S ., Bro . W . H . Miles , was presented vvith a P . M . W . S . ' s jewel by the members of the chapter in recognition of his having resuscitated the old chapter , and as its M . W . S . for Ihe past year . The jewel vvas extremely pretty and unique , and manufactured to special design by Comp . George Kenning , London .

The Prince of Wales visited Newmarket on Tuesday , for the purpose of . attending the races , and on Wednesday theTwo Thousand Guineas was won by Enthusiast , Bro . the Duke of Portland ' s Donovan , who vvas first favourite , being beaten by a head , while Pioneer , only three parts of a length behind , vvas a good third . There

vvere nine runners . The benefit to Mr . Riccardo Gallico at the AvenueTheatre , on the 9 th inst ., will be under the immediate patronage and presence of General Boulanger , who has promised to attend on this occasion .

Bros , the Hon . G . Allsopp , M . P ., Spencer Charrington , M . P ., and Sir T . Robertson , M . P ., vvere among the members of the deputation which waited upon the Chancellor of the Exchequer on Tuesday on the subject of the new tax upon beer .

The negotiations for a race for the America Cup are announced to have fallen through , the conditions as set forth by the New York Yacht Club being so different from those which governed the race between the Volunteer and the Thistle , that Bro . the Earl of Dunraven has withdrawn his challenge .

There was a singular May-day celebration at Birmingham . The brewers had organised a procession of drays and carts about a mile in length . Closely on its heels followed several thousand Temperance children . Their banners bore these devices : * ' What has the trade done for us ? " " Our fathers support the brewers and vve starve . " "The brewers are not our friends . "

It is officially announced that her Majesty will hold a drawing room at Buckingham Palace this day ( Friday ) , and another on Tuesday , the 14 th instant , and that one will be held by the Princess of Wales , on her Majesty ' s behalf , on Wednesday , the 29 th inst . The lastnamed being a collar-day , the Knights of the various

Orders will appear in their collars . Bro . the Lord Mayor presided at the 62 nd anniversary festival of the Printers' Pension , Almshouse , and Orphan Asylum , at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgatestreet , on Tuesday . The donations and subscriptions , including his lordship ' s list of X ' 741 , amounted to £ 5722 .

Bro . the Lord Mayor , and Bros . Alderman Gray and Newton , Sheriffs , will visit Paris next week in connection with the Paris International Exhibition and will take part in a series of entertainments . On Thursday they will dine with the President and Madame Carnot ; on Friday

Bro . Sir P . de Keyser , as the Executive President of the British Section , will give a dejeuner in their honour ; and the following day they will be the guests of the Prefect of the Seine and the Paris Municipality . His lordship and party will return to London on Tuesday , the 14 th inst .

The Duke of Edinburgh , who has returned home from the Mediterranean suffering from a sharp attack of Malta fever , has been visited by Bro . Sir Oscar Clayton , and is pronounced to be progressing favourably . The Prince of Wales , who returned to Marlborough House on Monday , has also visited his brother .

The Colliery Manager for the . 19 th ult . contains an interesting biographical sketch of Bro . VV . Fairley , F . G . S ., Mining Engineer and Mineral Estate Agent , of Gentleshaw , near Rugeley . Bro . Fairley is a member of St . Augustine's Lodge , No . 1941 , Rugeley , and his numerous Masonic friends will be glad of the opportunity of perusing his memoir .

It may not be generally known to professional Freemasons that Herr Unthan , the marvellous performer who was born without arms , is one of the Craft . At the Paragon , last Saturday week , Bros . Barwick and Eaton put him to the test , and not only did he prove himself a proficient Craftsman , but he also gave all the grips accurately with his right foot . It would interest and

surprise a Masonic brother to see Bro . Unthan give the signs , which he does satisfactorily and clearly , in a manner that is , of course , entirely his own . —The Era . Mr . John Coleman has placed the Olympic Theatre at the disposal of the Committee organised for the purpose of arranging a matinee performance for the family of the late Mr . This lodge meets on Friday evenings at 8 o ' clock . The First Annual Supper of the Ebury Lod ge of Instruction is arranged to take place at the Greyhound Hotel , Streatham Common , on the gth inst ., at 7 . 30 p . m .,

when it is hoped that a goodly number will attend . Bro . VV . Fowles , W . M . of the mother lodge , has consented to take the chair . Bro . Edward Terry has now entirely recovered from his recent indisposition , and is again appearing vvith his usual success as Dick Phenyl , in " Sweet Lavender" at Terry's Theatre .

vvith a report of the proeedings this week , but it will appear in the next issue of the Freemason . The Empress Frederick will have something to remind her of home at her palace at Kronburg . A large English garden is to be laid out , surrounded by terraces , on the plan of the East Garden at Windsor ; and the park is to be stocked vvith a herd of West Highland cattle .

The Stockwell Lodge of Instruction and the Stockwell Chapter of Improvement , formerly meeting at Masons' Hall Tavern , have removed to the VVhite Hart , Abchurch-lane , E . C . The former will meet every Monday at 6 p . m ., and the latter on alternate Friday ' s at the same hour . One of the most interesting matinees of the

season will be given by Mr . George Alexander on Wednesday , the 15 th inst ., at Terry ' s Theatre . The play is an English version of " Le Filibuster , " one of those delightful little idylls-which only Frenchmen like Jean Richepin and Theodore de Bauville know how to write . It is a story of humble life , told with humour , and dramatic force—just the kind of story which will enlist the domestic sympathies

of an English audience , and at the same time appeal to the most fastidious literary sense . The chief success of the original production at the Theatre Francais was M . Got's impersonation of an old man , a type of simple , dignified , and pathetic character , untortunately not common on our stage . For this part Mr . Alexander has engaged Bro .

Fernandez . The heroine will be played by Miss Calhoun , who has a great opportunity for ner very fresh and truthful method , and the other characters by Mr . Fred Terry , Miss Carlotta Leclercq , and Mr . Alexander . Mr . Jacomb Hood has designed tne dresses for this performance . There will be new scenery , and everything will be done to give a complete representation to a charming play .

Ihe Administration have conceded to Mr . Seymour Wade , of London , permission to erect in the grounds of the Paris Exhibition , near the foot of the Eiffel lower , an "International Theatre , " for the purpose of performances being given therein by the people of all nations . The theatre , which has been contracted to be opened on the ioth June , will hold 2000 persons , and will have attached to it a smaller theatre tor about 300 for

experimental purposes . The whole building will be lit by the electric light . The Countess Crosy , a lady who belongs to one of the oldest Austrian families , has just started on a tour as directress ot a travelling circus . For some time past she has been perfecting herself in riding under Elisa , in Vienna , some of her lessons being taken in the company of the Empress of Austria . The Countess intends visiting Paris vvith her troupe during the Exhibition .

Bro . Carl Rosa is said to have left a large fortune .. His income is averred to have been about £ 10 , 000 a year—earned , of course , principally by the tioupe in the provinces . A Special Grand Council of the Allied Masonic Degrees has been convened by the Grand Secretary , Bro . C . £ ' . Matier , for Thursday , the gth inst ., for the purpose of electing a Grand Master in place of the late Rev . Canon Portal .

At a meeting of the Committee of the Blackwater Institute , the Secretary announced that Mr . J . Passmore Edwards , proprietor ot The Echo , a native ot Blackwater , Cornwall , had most munificently offered to build rooms for the institution , and to furnish the library vvith books , an instalment of 250 volumes being already dispatched , together with a present of 150 volumes for the

institution at St . Agnes towards the 1000 volumes promised by the same liberal donor . A resolution was passed warmly thanking Mr . Edwards for his great liberality , and the President vvas directed to communicate vvith Lord Falmouth vvith a view to obtaining a suitable piece of land for the building . — West Briton . R . W . Bro . J . Ross Robertson , Deputy Grand

Master of the Grand Lodge of Masons of Canada , is paying a series of visits to the central points in the jurisdiction , and is at the same time delivering a particularly interesting and instructive lecture on "The Craft History of the Past Hundred Years , " vvith incidents and reminiscences of the early lodges . The lecture is compiled from an extensive collection ot Masonic MSS . and original papers

which Bro . Robertson has collected during the past eight years . The R . W . Bro . lectured in Belleville on Wednesday evening , the Gth of March , to one of the largest and most enthusiastic Masonic audiences ever assembled in that district . On the following Thursday he favoured the Craft at Port Hope , and on Friday the Craft at Brockviile , to very

large and appreciative gatherings . At Belleville , the eldest Mason in Canada , Bro . Hinke , initiated over 70 years ago * vvas present . He is now in his 97 th year , and is hale and hearty , bro . Robertson has also lectured in Strathroy , Sarnia and Brampton , and will , it is understood , visit the central sections of all the districts , Canadian Craftsman .

season will be given by Mr . George Alexander on Wednesday , the 15 th inst ., at Terry ' s Theatre . The play is an English version of " Le Filibuster , " one of those delightful little idylls-which only Frenchmen like Jean Richepin and Theodore de Bauville know how to write . It is a story of humble life , told with humour , and dramatic force—just the kind of story which will enlist the domestic sympathies

of an English audience , and at the same time appeal to the most fastidious literary sense . The chief success of the original production at the Theatre Francais was M . Got's impersonation of an old man , a type of simple , dignified , and pathetic character , untortunately not common on our stage . For this part Mr . Alexander has engaged Bro .

Fernandez . The heroine will be played by Miss Calhoun , who has a great opportunity for ner very fresh and truthful method , and the other characters by Mr . Fred Terry , Miss Carlotta Leclercq , and Mr . Alexander . Mr . Jacomb Hood has designed tne dresses for this performance . There will be new scenery , and everything will be done to give a complete representation to a charming play .

Ihe Administration have conceded to Mr . Seymour Wade , of London , permission to erect in the grounds of the Paris Exhibition , near the foot of the Eiffel lower , an "International Theatre , " for the purpose of performances being given therein by the people of all nations . The theatre , which has been contracted to be opened on the ioth June , will hold 2000 persons , and will have attached to it a smaller theatre tor about 300 for

experimental purposes . The whole building will be lit by the electric light . The Countess Crosy , a lady who belongs to one of the oldest Austrian families , has just started on a tour as directress ot a travelling circus . For some time past she has been perfecting herself in riding under Elisa , in Vienna , some of her lessons being taken in the company of the Empress of Austria . The Countess intends visiting Paris vvith her troupe during the Exhibition .

Bro . Carl Rosa is said to have left a large fortune .. His income is averred to have been about £ 10 , 000 a year—earned , of course , principally by the tioupe in the provinces . A Special Grand Council of the Allied Masonic Degrees has been convened by the Grand Secretary , Bro . C . £ ' . Matier , for Thursday , the gth inst ., for the purpose of electing a Grand Master in place of the late Rev . Canon Portal .

At a meeting of the Committee of the Blackwater Institute , the Secretary announced that Mr . J . Passmore Edwards , proprietor ot The Echo , a native ot Blackwater , Cornwall , had most munificently offered to build rooms for the institution , and to furnish the library vvith books , an instalment of 250 volumes being already dispatched , together with a present of 150 volumes for the

institution at St . Agnes towards the 1000 volumes promised by the same liberal donor . A resolution was passed warmly thanking Mr . Edwards for his great liberality , and the President vvas directed to communicate vvith Lord Falmouth vvith a view to obtaining a suitable piece of land for the building . — West Briton . R . W . Master of the Grand Lodge of Masons of Canada , is paying a series of visits to the central points in the jurisdiction , and is at the same time delivering a particularly interesting and instructive lecture on "The Craft History of the Past Hundred Years , " vvith incidents and reminiscences of the early lodges . The lecture is compiled from an extensive collection ot Masonic MSS . and original papers

which Bro . Robertson has collected during the past eight years . The R . W . Bro . lectured in Belleville on Wednesday evening , the Gth of March , to one of the largest and most enthusiastic Masonic audiences ever assembled in that district . On the following Thursday he favoured the Craft at Port Hope , and on Friday the Craft at Brockviile , to very

large and appreciative gatherings . At Belleville , the eldest Mason in Canada , Bro . Hinke , initiated over 70 years ago * vvas present . He is now in his 97 th year , and is hale and hearty , bro . Robertson has also lectured in Strathroy , Sarnia and Brampton , and will , it is understood , visit the central sections of all the districts , Canadian Craftsman .
