the brethren that honour . He spoke with a sense of grief and dismay , for he regretted to have to inform the Provincial Grand Lodge that Bro . Arnold , having determined to leave England for some time , had placed his resignation in his hands . He had always been able to lean for support on Bro . Arnold , whose excellent judgment had always been at his command in matters relating to the province . The question as to who should succeed Bro . Arnold had not been determined , but the ability and zeal he had shosvn
as Deputy Prov . Grand Master would make him a very hard man to follow . Bro . ARNOLD thanked the R . W . Prov . Grand Master for the kind words in which he had expressed himself and for the kind manner in which he had treated him svhile he had been in the province . Circumstances had determined him to leave England for a time , but he knesv that the brethren would have a place in their hearts for him though he might be far asvay . His office was a responsible one and he felt that he had not been able to do all that he
should have liked to do . His work had been the greatest pleasure to him and had enabled him to form friendships svith many svorthy Masons , and he must thank the brethren of the province most sincerely for the very kind way in svhich they had always received him when he visited their lodges . Grand Lodge , and expressed the pleasure he felt at the large attendance of . brethren on the occasion ol the Special Grand Lodge at Reigate , when the Prince of Wales laid the foundaiion-stone of a nesv building of the Saint Ann ' s Society . He remarked also that since they
met at Kingston last year there had been three nesv lodges add « d to their roll , and that one more svould , as he had before told them , entitle him to have tsvo more aprons to give asvay . Before resuming his seat the Prov . Grand Master tendered a cordial welcome to the Right Wor . Bro . W . W . Beach , Prov . Grand Master for Hants and the Isle of Wight , who had done him the honour to visit the Provincial Grand Lodge of Surrey on this
. The R . W . PROV . G . MASTER for Hants briefly acknowledged the compliment , and the Deputy P . G . M ., Bro . ARNOLD , having addressed the brethren upon the policy of a systematic use of their votes for the benefit of Surrey candidates for the Masonic Charities , the Provincial Grand Lodge was closed in due form , and the brethren subsequently attended Divine service at St . Andrew ' s Church , where a special service was performed , the
Prov . G . Chap ., Bro . the Rev . GEOFFREY HUGHES , preaching a sermon on the universal fatherhood of God , and the universal brotherhood ol man , from the text : " He gave to all life and breath and all things , and hath made of one blood all nations of men . " ( Acts xvii . 25 , 26 . ) During the service the choir performed C . J . Frost ' s " Magnificat" in D ., and Gounod ' s fine anthem , " Send out Thy Light , " was also very finely rendered .

After the dinner which followed the return of the brethren from church , the customary loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed by the R . W . PROV . GRAND MASTER .
Bro . CASE , P . G . D ., responded for "The Grand Officers of England . " Bro . ARNOLD , in proposing "The Health of the Provincial Grand Master , " said it was unnecessary for him to say much in introducing that toast , because he knew that General Brownrigg was known and beloved by all in his province , and by none more than by his Prov . Grand Officers . He had been closely associated with General Brownrigg , and must not in his presence speak of his personal characteristics ; but the result of his rule was
that they had a province living in peace and harmony , and Freemasonry was making good progress there . Indeed , if they looked round the provinces it would be difficult to find one they would rather live in than Surrey . Bro . General BROWNRIGG said that when he became Provincial Grand Master for Surrey he had nine lodges under his rule ; there were now 29 . This rapid growth had multiplied his difficulties in the distribution of
honours ; but he had reason to believe that the appointments he had made had in general been approved . He should perhaps have failed but for the thoroughly fraternal , cordial assistance he had received Irom all those who had been Provincial Grand Officers , by none more than b y him whose health he svas nosv about to propose in connection with the Provincial Grand Officers . For some years , continued General Brownrigg , he has been more than my right hand . I have been enabled to sing " io triomphe " that he has

been with me so long here ; nosv I think I must change that to a dirge , because he is about to leave me . You all have seen his excellent work you all knosv the unsparing assistance . I do not like to trust myself to say much more . I think very much of the popularity I ' enjoy is to be attributed to him ; and now I a *? k you to drink his health , and to join with me in saying "God bless him wherever he goes . "
Bro . ARNOLD , in replying , said : Ri ght Worshipful Provincial Grand Master and Brethren—In the name of the Provincial Grand Officers , I beg to thank you very much , for myself especially , for the very kind words which have dropped from youi mouth on this occasion . I stand before you now on a very painful occasion , because , though I have nosv come to svhat most men may call the best time of their lives , when they feel that they may
retire from their active professional duties , and retire into privacy , and take up whatever amusement or any easy svork they choose to take , yet , at the same time , I feel sorrosv nosv that in doing this I am obliged to sever the Masonic ties which [ have had with this province . It is nearly nine years since General Brownrigg first made me his Deputy Provincial Grand Master , and I must say that they have been most pleasant years to me . I have
been welcome in every lodge where I have been . I must thank you for the kindness I have experienced at your hands ; I shall treasure up recollections ot the years of Freemasonry I have spent in Surrey ; and svhen I have passed away , I hope Masonry in Surrey will go on making good progress , and that those dear old Charities may be thoroughly supported in this
province , and that we may always rally round the Grand Master and unite together , shoulder to shoulder , as one man ; and whenever you have a boy or a girl or an old manor woman , you svill send your votes to Bro . Greenwood to secure their being made the most of . I must not say more ; all I can say is that it is a very great happiness to me to retire at the present moment , when there is everything to make the svork pleasant for him svho shall succeed me .

The brethren then left the lodge room , and marched in procession to the Cathedral , where the Very Rev . the Dean of LICHFIKLD preached an impressive sermon from Psalm Ixviii ., 6 th verse : " God setteth the solitary in families . "
A collection , amounting to ^ 15 13 s . iod ., was taken at the close of the sermon . The brethren returned to the lodge room , when it was resolved to vote five guineas to the restoration of St . Chad ' s Church , and five guineas to the Nursing Association in Lichfield . The D . P . G . M ., Bro . Colonel FOSTER GOUGH , proposed a vote of thanks to the Dean of Lichfield for preaching the sermon
The P . D . P . G . M ., Bro . FRANK J AMES , seconded the proposition , which was agreed to unanimously . The brethren then left the lodge room , and marched in procession to the Cathedral , where the Very Rev . the Dean of LICHFIKLD preached an impressive sermon from Psalm Ixviii ., 6 th verse : " God setteth the solitary in families . "
A collection , amounting to ^ 15 13 s . iod ., was taken at the close of the sermon . The brethren returned to the lodge room , when it was resolved to vote five guineas to the restoration of St . Chad ' s Church , and five guineas to the Nursing Association in Lichfield . The D . P . G . M ., Bro . Colonel FOSTER GOUGH , proposed a vote of thanks to the Dean of Lichfield for preaching the sermon
The P . D . P . G . M ., Bro . FRANK J AMES , seconded the proposition , which was agreed to unanimously . The lodge having closed , the brethren adjourned to the George Hotel , where they partook of a most sumptuous banquet , and at which the loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed and enthusiastically responded to .
