The brethren assembled at one o ' clock , and halt an hour later the Provincial Grand Master , preceded by his Provincial Grand Officers , entered the lodge room , and the proceedings were commenced in due form . The roll of the Provincial Grand Officers was called , and there proved to be very few absentees .

The roll of lodges was called , and the representatives answered . Bro . F . M . HOTBLACK , Prov . G . Reg ., gave an account of the work of the lodges during the past year , and of their present position . The PROV . GRAND TREASURER gave a summary of the financial state ol the province .

Bro . H . G . BARWELL presented the report of the Charities Committee . It was agreed to make the usual donation to the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls . After the transaction of some miscellaneous business , the Provincial Grand Master appointed and invested his officers for the ensuing year as follows :

The Deputy Prov . G . M ., Bro . HAMON LE STRANGE , moved a number of alterations and additions to the by-laws of the Provincial Grand Lodge , of which he had given notice at the last meeting . These were adopted unanimously , and with very little discussion . The Auditors , Bros . George Baxter and R . F . Ladell , were re-appointed . Bro . Hamon Le Strange was warmly thanked for his presentation to the Provincial Grand Lodge of a number of pictures of Masonic worthies .

The PROV . GRAND MASTER announced that he had decided that the collection to be taken at the service in the Cathedral that day should be given to the Cathedral Reparation Fund . Before closing the meeting , the PROV . GRAND MASTER expressed his extreme gratification at finding all the lodges so well represented , and at

learning they were in so prosperous a condition . The attendance that day had been considerably larger than for many years past . The Prov . Grand Lodge was then closed in due form , the business having occupied a longer time than usual by reason of the number of bylaws that had to be considered .

In the evening a banquet was held at the Masonic Rooms . Lord Suffield occupied the chair , and was supported by Bros . Hamon Le Strange , Sir Francis Boileau , Sir Kenneth Kemp , Austen Le Strange , Rev . A , VV Callis , Rev . H . T . Griffith , Rev . T . Stone , Rev . Shirley , W . P . Eversley ,

H . G . Barwell , E . Orams , Col . Sturgeon , T . C . R . King , J . Bridgmm , Dr . Offord , J . L . N . Barnard , and others . The toasts of "The Queen and the Craft , " and "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " were given in felicitous terms by Lord SUFFIELD , and were received by the brethren with wonted enthusiasm .

Bro . Sir FRANCIS BOILEAU submitted "The Health of the Pro Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom ; the Deputy Grand Master , the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe ; and thc rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past . " He said these , the highest officers of the Order , were all chosen with the greatest judgment , and , as they had so often proved , could be relied on for the efficient performance of any duties imposed upon them . In connection with the toast the name of Bro . Hamon Le Strange was mentioned .

In response , the D . P . G . M . remarked that so long as such men were at the head of Masonic affairs prosperity was assured for the Order . Proceeding to ask the brethren to drink " The Health of the Right Worshipful the Provincial Grand Master . " Bro . Le Strange expressed the profound

pleasure it afforded everyone to see Lord Suffield among them . Two years since his absence , through a serious illness , caused widespread sorrow in the district ; now all were more ( ban happy at his restoration to health , and had every cause to be thankful thev had such a splendid Prov . Grand Master at their head .

The toast having been drunk with the greatest heartiness , Lord SUFFIELD tendered his thanks for the cordial greeting given him . U was a source of pleasure to him to find the Provincial Grand Lodge in so nourishing a condition . The work done during the day had been useful and enjoyable , and he hoped similar success would attend the meeting next > 'ear at Lynn .

PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF NORTHUMBERLAND .

On Wednesday , the - ' . sth ult ., the i'rov . Grand Master of Northumberland , the Right Hon . Sir Matthew White Ridley , Bart ., M . P ., held a special I ' rov . Grand Lodge at thc Grand Assembly Rooms , Barras Bridge , Newcastle , for the purpose of laying the chief corner-stone of the Central Masonic Hall , Pilgrim-street , and the consecration of two new lodges . The

I ' rov . Grand Lodge assembled at the Grand Assembly Rooms , and the brethren afterwards proceeded to the Olympia , Northumberland-road , to form thc procession to the site of the new . building , and there was a very large assemblage of the general public to witness the brethren with the banners of the Prov . ( irand Lodge , and the local and other lodges march by way of Northumberland-street to Pilgrim-street .

The procession was headed by bands of music , and as thc provincial brethren reached the site they entered from Pilgrim-street , the members of lodges entering the p latform irom Hi gh Bridge . Special seats were reserved for the P . G . M . and his chief officers . The present Provincial Grand Officers and visitors of distinction and past Grand Officers took up a special position near the stone , together with the directors of the company . As the brethren entered the band played the National Anthem .

Order having been called by the Acting P . G . D . of C , Bro . J PAGE , the Masonic anthem " Hail Masonry" was sung by the choir . The upper stone was then raised 15 inches by two or more M . Ms ., specially appointed , under the supervision of the architect , Bro . John Johnstone .

Prayer was then offered by the Chaplain , Bro . Rev . P . H . MOORE , M . A . The Prov . C > . Master ( Chairman of the Company ) , Bro . Alderman R . H . HOLMES , D . P . G AL , on behalf of the directors , requested the Prov . Grand Alaster to la ) ' the corner-stone accordingto ancient custom , presenting him wilh a silver trowel for that purpose .

The inscription on the trowel was as follows : " Presented by the chairman and directors of ( he Newcastle-upon-Tyne Central Alasonic Hall Company , Limited , to the Right Hon . and Right Worshi p ful Bro . Sir Alatthew White Ridley , Bart ., AI . P ., Right Worshipful Prov . Grand Master of the Province of Northumberland , on the occasion of his laying the chief corner-stone of the Central Alasonic Hall , Pilgrim-street , Newcastle-on-Tyne , July , 25 th , 1894 . A . L . 5894- "

Bro . Alderman R . H . HOLMES , D . P . G . M ., in presenting the trowel , as chairman and on behalf of the Central Alasonic Hall Company , asked the Prov . Grand Master to lay the stone , and expressed the hope that the loundation-stone laid that day would be a stone ot a great Masonic Temple , built to the honour and glory of the Alost High and the u ** e of the brethren of thc province . He ( endured to Sir AL W . Ridley their sincere thanks that

he had acceded to their prayer , and he asked him to acctpt the trowel as a small souvenir of the occasion , and that it might alter the ceremony be handed down to the family as one of the heirlooms of Blagdon , a house they honoured , and which had given them two or three Provincial Grand Alasters . Bro . Sir Al . W . RIDLEY said he accepted the trowel with gratitude and pleasure , and ho trusted it would be a reminiscence for many years of Freemasonry , and he hoped th . it it would be an augury for the good of

Freemasonry . Bro . F . A . COKDI - , B . A ., P . G . Sec , then stated the contents of the bottle pi iced in the cavity , and read the inscription on the plate . The Prov . G . AL then handed the plans to the architect , Bro . John . Johnstone , and entrusted him with the work according to the plans and designs .

pleasure it afforded everyone to see Lord Suffield among them . Two years since his absence , through a serious illness , caused widespread sorrow in the district ; now all were more ( ban happy at his restoration to health , and had every cause to be thankful thev had such a splendid Prov . Grand Master at their head .

The toast having been drunk with the greatest heartiness , Lord SUFFIELD tendered his thanks for the cordial greeting given him . U was a source of pleasure to him to find the Provincial Grand Lodge in so nourishing a condition . The work done during the day had been useful and enjoyable , and he hoped similar success would attend the meeting next > 'ear at Lynn .

On Wednesday , the - ' . sth ult ., the i'rov . Grand Master of Northumberland , the Right Hon . Sir Matthew White Ridley , Bart ., M . P ., held a special I ' rov . Grand Lodge at thc Grand Assembly Rooms , Barras Bridge , Newcastle , for the purpose of laying the chief corner-stone of the Central Masonic Hall , Pilgrim-street , and the consecration of two new lodges . The

I ' rov . Grand Lodge assembled at the Grand Assembly Rooms , and the brethren afterwards proceeded to the Olympia , Northumberland-road , to form thc procession to the site of the new . building , and there was a very large assemblage of the general public to witness the brethren with the banners of the Prov . ( irand Lodge , and the local and other lodges march by way of Northumberland-street to Pilgrim-street .

The procession was headed by bands of music , and as thc provincial brethren reached the site they entered from Pilgrim-street , the members of lodges entering the p latform irom Hi gh Bridge . Special seats were reserved for the P . G . M . and his chief officers . The present Provincial Grand Officers and visitors of distinction and past Grand Officers took up a special position near the stone , together with the directors of the company . As the brethren entered the band played the National Anthem .

Order having been called by the Acting P . G . D . of C , Bro . J PAGE , the Masonic anthem " Hail Masonry" was sung by the choir . The upper stone was then raised 15 inches by two or more M . Ms ., specially appointed , under the supervision of the architect , Bro . John Johnstone .

Prayer was then offered by the Chaplain , Bro . Rev . P . H . MOORE , M . A . The Prov . C > . Master ( Chairman of the Company ) , Bro . Alderman R . H . HOLMES , D . P . G AL , on behalf of the directors , requested the Prov . Grand Alaster to la ) ' the corner-stone accordingto ancient custom , presenting him wilh a silver trowel for that purpose .

The inscription on the trowel was as follows : " Presented by the chairman and directors of ( he Newcastle-upon-Tyne Central Alasonic Hall Company , Limited , to the Right Hon . and Right Worshi p ful Bro . Sir Alatthew White Ridley , Bart ., AI . P ., Right Worshipful Prov . Grand Master of the Province of Northumberland , on the occasion of his laying the chief corner-stone of the Central Alasonic Hall , Pilgrim-street , Newcastle-on-Tyne , July , 25 th , 1894 . A . L . 5894- "

Bro . Alderman R . H . HOLMES , D . P . G . M ., in presenting the trowel , as chairman and on behalf of the Central Alasonic Hall Company , asked the Prov . Grand Master to lay the stone , and expressed the hope that the loundation-stone laid that day would be a stone ot a great Masonic Temple , built to the honour and glory of the Alost High and the u ** e of the brethren of thc province . He ( endured to Sir AL W . Ridley their sincere thanks that

he had acceded to their prayer , and he asked him to acctpt the trowel as a small souvenir of the occasion , and that it might alter the ceremony be handed down to the family as one of the heirlooms of Blagdon , a house they honoured , and which had given them two or three Provincial Grand Alasters . RIDLEY said he accepted the trowel with gratitude and pleasure , and ho trusted it would be a reminiscence for many years of Freemasonry , and he hoped th . it it would be an augury for the good of
