PISTORIUS , in proposing the toast of the evening , " Ihe Transvaal Masonic Educational Institution , " after having explained the objects of the Institution and the lines upon which the same would be managed , paid a h ' gh tribute to the indefatigable exertions of Bro . J . SILVA , D . G . Sec , who had not only initialed the movement , but had also performed all the
arduous duties in conjunction therewith , and thc thanks of the breihren were due to him for his untiring zeal in promoting its interests . He deeply regretted Bro . D t Silva ' s absence from thc inaugural festival , owing to the death of his esteemed wife , and he was convinced that he had the most heartfelt sympathy in his bereavement of every brother in the Craft who knew him .

The recital of the above was received with marked appreciation and unbounded enthusiasm . The proceedings throughout were of a most cordial and harmonious nature , the utmost amity and concord prevailing . The Si IISI ITUTI : D . G . M . of the Scottish Constitution stated tint the Scottish District Grand Lodge had decided to throw in their lot with the
scheme so as to make one huge success ; while Bro . RIDEAL , in proposing the toatt of "The Stewards , " stated that the Scotch lodges would endeavour to subscribe another £ 10 , 000 they could certainly be depinded on for £ 5010 . He announced his intention of donating 400 guineas for himself and 100 guineas for his wife .
The keynote of the evening ' s proceedings was unanimity , irrespective of Constitution . Some excellent songs were contributed between the toasts , and at a laic hour the festival terminated .

lhe lodge was opened in the hirst and Second Degrees and Bro . Stevenson being a candidate for raising , answered the usual questions and was entrusted . The W . M . then opened the lodge in thc Third Degree , and Bro . Stevenson was raised to the Degree of M . M . The brethren then went through Masonic drill , after which the W . M . closed down in the Third and Second Degrees respectively , and after rising the usuil times , closed the lodge in due form and the meeting adjourned . Bro . Stokes was unanimously elected W . BRO . CAPT . WILLIAM SHIPMAN , 1789 . Bro . Capt . William Shipman , ofthe Ubique Lodge , No . 1789 , Riding Master of the Royal Horse Artillery , died at his residence , The Quarters , Nightingaleplace , Woolwich , on Thursday , the 19 th ultimo , and was buried with full military honours at Charlton Cemetery on the following Monday . The coffin was borne on a gun carriage , covered with the Union Jack , and bearing the deceased's
sword and accoutrements , the band of the Royal Artillery playing funeral marches . There were a large number of brethren present , thc mourners consisting of the two sons of the deceased ; Messrs . G . and C . Shipman , brothers of the deceased ; Messrs . R . and A . Dunstan , nephews ; Major Pawson and Capt . Hanwell , R . A . ; and Mr . Smith . BRO . MAJOR E . H . PEACOCK . The brethren of St . Helena Lodge , No . 48 S , have sustained a severe loss in the untimely death of their Junior Warden , Bro . the Hon . Major E . H . Peacock , ist Leicester Regiment , Officer Commanding Troops , St . Helena , who died very suddenly on July 16 th . Bro . Peacock was a man who carried the precepts of the Craft inlo every detail of his life , and his generous and manly character gained
him friends amongst all classes of society , and the numbers who came to pay the last tribute of respect to his memory is a convincing proof of the universal esteem and affection with which he was regarded throughout the whole island community . At an ordinary meeting of the lodge ( which was in mourning ) , held at the lodge house , St . Helena , on August 9 th , it was resolved lhat a letter of eondolcnce be sent to his widow .
