A LOWESTOFT trawler named the Albatross was run down in the channel on Monday , by a Norwegian barque and sank immediately . The skipper , who leaves a wife and nine children , and the mate were both drowned . PRINCESS HENRY OF BATTENBERG , prior to her departure with the Queen for Scotland on Tuesday , paid a visit to Whippingham Church for the purpose of inspecting the screen which is being placed in the Memorial Chapel by Mr . Gilbert , R . A .

THE MARQUIS OF SALISBURY travelled to Osborne on Saturday last by her Majesty's command and had the honour of being included in the Royal dinner party . Subsequently his lordship had audience of the Queen and returned to town on Monday . THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CONNAUGHT , accompanied by the Princess Louise and the Princesses Margaret and Patricia and Prince Arthur of Connaught , honoured Bro . Lord and Lady Pirbright with their compiny at an afternoon party at Henley Park en Saturday last .

SIR ALFRED MILNER , Governor of Cape Colony and High Commissio . ner for S juth Africa , has forwarded to England two packages containing illuminated adlresses to her Majesty the Queen , consigned to the Right Honourable the Secretary of State for the Colonial Department . PRINCESS VICTORIA OF SCHLESWIG-HOLSTF . IN , after taking leave of the Queen at Osborne on Tuesday , crossed over to Portsmouth for London , reaching Victoria Station in the afternoon . Her Royal Highness drove to Buckingham Palace and subsequently left for the Continent .

THE KING OF SIAM arrived at Hamburg at 2 p . m . on Tuesday afternoon , and was received by the Burgomaster and the officers commanding the garrison , a guard of honour being drawn up on the platform at the railway station . Later in the day his Majesty paid a visit to the Horticultural Gardens . THE DEATH IS announced of Mrs . Horace Sedger , better known to playgoers as Miss Nellie Harris , sister of the late Bro . Sir Augustus Harris and Charles Harris . Mrs . Sedger , whose death occurred somewhat suddenly after o . i ! y a few days' illness , was some years ago lessee of the Novelty Theatre .

PRINCESS HENRY OF BATTENBERG on Monday laid the foundation-stone of a new children's hospital ward at Ryde , which will be the island memorial of the Queen ' s reign . Her Royal Highness was enthusiastically received , and having performed the ceremony and been accorded a vote cf thanks for her kindness drove away amid the cheers of those assembled .

THE EXTENSIVE shooting preserves of the Earl of Ancaster , the Marquis of Exeter , Lord Chelmetey , and other gentlemen in South Lincolnshire are reported to be wellstocked with game , though partridges , having suffered from the cold weather that prevailed at the hatching season , are not as plentiful as last year . There is , therefore , a very promising outlook for the coming season .

PRINCESS HENRY OF BATTENBERG and Princess Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein left East Cowes on board the Royal yacht Alberta on Saturday last , for Portsmouth , where they visited and inspected the Renown , flagship to Vice-Admiral Sir John Fisher , K . C . B ., which sailed on Wednesday for the North American and West Indies station . Their Royal Highnesses returned to the Isle of Wight after lunching with the Admiral .

THE FUNERAL of Captain Arkwright , who lost his life on Mont Blanc , but whose body was only recovered on the 22 nd uTt ., took place atChamounise on Tuesday . The remains were followed to their last resting place by several of the deceased ' s relatives , and there were also present the Mayor and other public functionaries , as well as a number of English anJ American tourists . The funeral caused a large amount of interest .

THE GENERAL COMMITTEE of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution will be held at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Liverpool , this ( Friday ) evening for the purpose of considering sundry applications to be placed on th : list of candidates for election at the Court of Governors next ensuing , namely , two for the Educational Fund , two for the Combined Fund , and four for the Advancement Fund . The chair will be taken at 7 p . m .

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER ( Bro . Sir Michael Hicks-Beach , Bart ., M . P . ) has notified to the executors of the late Sir Wollaston Franks that he purposes remitting the duty on the bequest of that gentleman to the British Museum , and accordingly the very valuable collection bequeathed by Sir W . Franks has been handed over to the trustees of the British Museum . This will involve a considerable rearrangement of the galleries , but it is hoped that in the course of a few weeks the collection will be on view to the public .

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF YORK left Dublin lor Killarney on Saturday last , where they had been the guests of the Earl of Kenmare . Their Royal Highnesses drove under military escort to the Kingsbridge Railway Station , and were followed by the Lord-Lieutenant and the Countess Cadogan , among th _ . se assembled to bid them "Godspeed " on their journey being Bro . the Duke of Abercorn , Princess Henry of Pless , the Lord-Chancellor of Ireland ( Bro . Lord Ashbourne ) , Sir David Harrel , Bro . Lord Robeits and his staff , and others .

THERE HAVE been sundry disasters on the coast caused by the heavy gale that prevailed on Sunday . At Holyhead , the crew of the lifeboat were hastily summoned , and the boat promptly dispatched in charge of a tug to the relief of a large steamer which was flying signals of distress off the South Stack , while the steamer Q jeen , belonging to the North of Scotland , Orkney and Shetland Steim Shipping Company , reached Lerwick on Sunday , having on board the crew of a Norwegian whaler , which had been burned and abandoned at sea . The crew were at once landed and will bc forwarded to their homes by the Norwegian Vice Consul .

THE GLASGOW magistrates and Clyde Trustees have completed their arrangements for the reception of the Duke and Duchess of York on their approaching visit to S : oland . The r Royal Highnesses will arrive on board of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert at Greenock on the morning of Friday , the ioth instant , and will go on to Govan , where the Duchess will christen the new docks the *• Prince ' s Djck . " After this the steamer will convey the Royal party to Broomielaw , whence they will drive in carriages to Kelvingrove Park , where the Duke will Uy the foundation-stone of the Fine Art Gallery . After luncheon , the Duke and Duchess will leave for Dilmenyona visit to the Earl of Rosebery .

DONCASTER RACES . —The Great Northern Railway Company are making special arrangements in connection with Doncaster Races . The usual service of 15 expresses from London will be maintained , and , in addition , a special express will leave King's Cross on each race day at 940 a . m ., luncheon cars for first and third class passengers being attached to this train . On Monday , the Gth instant , additional expresses will also leave King ' s Cross at 3 . 15 p . m . and 5 . 40 p . m . On Wednesday , the Sth instant ( St . Leger Day ) , an excursion will be run from Woolwich Arsenal , Woolwich Dockyard , Charlton , Maze Hill , Greenwich , Deptford , Blackheath , Nsw Cross , and Sparoad

, returning from Doncaster same day only . On the same day an excursion will be run from Moorgate , Aldersgate , Farringdon , and King ' s Cross ( G . N . ) , returning sam ; day or "Cup" day . For these trips the low fare of 12 s . 6 d ., third class , will be charged . Additional express trains will also leave Doncaster for London at 12 50 p . m . and 6 . 5 p . m . on each race day , and on Tuesday , Wednesday , and Thursday , the 7 th , Sth , and gth instant , dining cars for first and third class passengers will be attached to the latter train . Sir Redv ^ rs Buller and Sir Evelyn Wood , Lord Edmund Talbot , the Right Hon . St . John Brodrick , M . P ., the Hon . R . Talbot , and many other officers .

AN EXPERIMENT with motors as dust-collectors is being made by the Chiswick L ' rb _ an District Council and is exciting a considerable am > unt of interest among other sanitary bodies . If successful , it is reckoned that the Chiswick Urban Council will effect a saving of between _& ' s ° o and £ 600 a year . PRINCESS VICTORIA OF WALES and Princess Charles of Denmark , attended by Sir Dighton Probyn , V . C , left Marlborough House on Wednesday evening tor Port Victoria , where they embarked on the Royal yacht Osborne for Copenhagen , Admiral of the Fleet , Bro . the Hon . Sir H . Keppel , being in attendance . The Osborne remained in Sheerness Harbour for the night .

THERE IS recorded a further decline in the death rate for the Metropolis last week . According to the Registrar-General's returns , the rate dropped from 24 . 2 to 20 4 per looo , there beinz still , however , an unusual number of deaths among children under five years of age from gastric maladies . The rate at Brighton has decreased to ig . S , and at Croydon to 21 . 1 per 1000 . THE CRICKET SEASON terminated on Wednesday , when the matches between Surrey and Sussex at Brighton ; Somersetshire and Hants at Taunton ; and Warwickshire and Derbyshire at Birmingham , had all of them to be abandoned in consequence of the rain . Lancashire wins the County Championship , with Surrey a good second , Essex third , Yorkshire fourth , and Gloucestershire fifth .

ON HER ARRIVAL at Balmoral on Wednesday afternoon , the Queen received an enthusiastic Highland welcome . Over the north entrance gate a triumphal arch of heather and evergreens was erected , with the motto " Ever Welcome . " The Farquharson and Balmoral Highlanders furnished a guard of honour , and at the call of Sir Fleetwood Edwards three cheers were given for her Majesty .

THE IRISH TEXTILE EXHIBITION was closed on Saturday evening last . Prior tothe closing of the Exhibition , an interesting ceremony was held in the Great Hall , which included the presentation of an address to the Countess Cadogan , as the organiser of the Exhibition , and a testimonial to Mr . M'Cartney Filgate in recognition of the zeal and devotion he has shown in its management . There was a large and distinguished company present .

BRO . LORD CHARLES BERESFORD has at length obtained flag-rank , and , it is needless to say , that his promotion to be Rear-Admiral is extremely popular throughout the service . He highly distinguished himself when in command of the Condor at _ the bombardment of the Alexandria forts in 1 SS 2 , and again on the Gordon Relief Expedition up the Nile in 18 S 5 , when he was mainly instrumental in extricating Sir Charles Wilson from a perilous position .

THERE WERE PRESENT at the annual church parade in Seaham Hall grounds on Sunday last by invitation of the Marquis of Londonderry as manyas 45 cyclist clubs , including some 150 ladies , among those who witnessed the proceedings being Bro . Sir Michael and Lady Lucy Hicks-Beach and Lord Henry Vane-Tempest . His lordship delivered a brief address , in which he expressed regret at the absence , through indisposition , of Lady Londonderry , and having extended to them all a hearty welcome , expressed the hope that they would continue to hold their parade in his grounds .

THE NEW PALACE S TEAMERS ( LIMITED ) announce that the La Marguerite and Royal Sovereign will continue running to Southend , Margate , Ramsgate , and Boulogne until 13 th September , and that the La Belgique will run to Ostend until the nth inst ., returning on the 12 th . Owing to the success which has attended the La Marguerite special trip to Boulogne on Wednesday an extra trip is announced for Wednesday , the Sth inst ., train leaving Fenchureh-street at 6 . 15 a . m ., returning from Boulogne at

4 . 0 p . m . A FATAL ACCIDENT occurred to a train from Eastbourne to Tunbridge Wells on the London Brighton and South Coastline On Wednesday morning . Between Mayfield and Heathfield a train went over an embankment , and the driver was killed , some 13 persons , including the fireman and guard , injured , and about 17 others more or less severely shaken . The London Brighton and South Coast Railway has long enj > yed an immunity from accident , and it is probable that this one is dus to the long an 1 heavy rains which have fallen recently .

IT APPEARS to be established beyond doubt that the capture of Lundi Kotal was due to an act of treachery on the part of some members of the garrison , a number of whom have joined the enemy . But before the place was captured the garrison inflicted a heavy loss on the besiegers , with only a few casualties on their o » n side . Msanwhilj the preparations to deal effectively with the Afridis and the other tribes th it have attacked us are proceeding rapidly , and there seems to bs little d > ubt that this frontier revolt will soon be put down . We must , however , expect to hear of some sharp work , as the tribesmen have good fighting qualities in them .

THE QUEEN , accompanied by the Printers Henry of Battenberg and her children and the children of the Duke and Duchefs of York , and attended b y the ladies and gentlemen of her Court , left Osborne on Tuesday afternoon , and , having crossed the Solent in the Royal yacht , Alberta , to Portsmouth , proceeded at once to the special train in waiting and journeyed northwards to Balmoral , her Highland residence , which was reached on Wednesday afternoon . According to present arrangements , her Majesty will remain in Scotland till about the middle of November , when the Court will return South and take up their residence at Windsor .

THE J UBILEE celebrations of King Oscar II . of Sweden will commence on the 17 th instant and will be continued for five days . Besides the members of the Swedish and Danish families , the following Royal persons have announced their intention of being present : The Hereditary Grand Dukeof Baden , with his consort ; the Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxemburg , with his consort ; Prince Friedrich Leopold of Prussia , as the representative of Emperor William ; Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein , as the representative of Queen Victoria ; and Prince Chira , as the representative of the King of Siam .

AFTER A VISIT to Adare Manor , the seat of Bro . the Earl of Danraven , owner of the famous yacht Valkyrie , which was concluded on Wednesday morning , the Duke and Duchess of York continued their Irish excursion by train to Killaloe whence their Royal Highnesses proceeded by boat up the Shannon , accompanied by Bro . the Earl of Dunraven , Lad y Fingall , Bro . Gerald Balfour , M . P ., ani Lady Betty Balfour , and Lady Rachel Wyndham-Quin . The weather was deplorable , but at every village and

town that was passed , crowds of people cheered the Koyal party , while several addresses were presented and acknowledged . From Banagher to Newtown Stewart the journey was continued by rail , the reception being fully as cordial . From Newton Stewart the Duke and Duchess proceeded to Baron's Court , as guests of the Dike and Duchess of Abercorn there being a large house party invited to meet their Royal Highnesses , among them being Lord and Lady Rossmore , Bros . Lord Frederick and Lord Claud Hamil . on , and Sir W . Kaye .

THE CYCLISTS of various towns in East Kent held their annual Church Parade on Sunday , the 213 th ult ., the venue being Folkestone . The participating clubs , in addition to the local one , included Dover ( which sent the largest contingent ) , Margate , Hythe , Canterbury , and Heme Bay , whilst the visiting cyclists included some lrom the Catford Club . The muster was the largest yet held . At St . Michael ' s Church a short service was held , the Mayor and Corporation of Folkestone attending in State . Mr . Ben Greet read the lesson , and the incumbent , the Rev . E . Husband , delivered an address ,

speaking as a cyclist to cyclists . Having expressed the thanks of Mr . Greet , whom he described as an honoured member of an honoured profession , the rev . gentlemen said he considered God had given them the joy of cycling to enable them to keep their health , for he maintained that a bicycle was the best doctor a man could have . He concluded with an appeal for assistance for the Folkestone Hospital , the result of which was highly satisfactory . At Holyhead , the crew of the lifeboat were hastily summoned , and the boat promptly dispatched in charge of a tug to the relief of a large steamer which was flying signals of distress off the South Stack , while the steamer Q jeen , belonging to the North of Scotland , Orkney and Shetland Steim Shipping Company , reached Lerwick on Sunday , having on board the crew of a Norwegian whaler , which had been burned and abandoned at sea . The crew were at once landed and will bc forwarded to their homes by the Norwegian Vice Consul .

THE GLASGOW magistrates and Clyde Trustees have completed their arrangements for the reception of the Duke and Duchess of York on their approaching visit to S : oland . The r Royal Highnesses will arrive on board of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert at Greenock on the morning of Friday , the ioth instant , and will go on to Govan , where the Duchess will christen the new docks the *• Prince ' s Djck . " After this the steamer will convey the Royal party to Broomielaw , whence they will drive in carriages to Kelvingrove Park , where the Duke will Uy the foundation-stone of the Fine Art Gallery . After luncheon , the Duke and Duchess will leave for Dilmenyona visit to the Earl of Rosebery .

DONCASTER RACES . —The Great Northern Railway Company are making special arrangements in connection with Doncaster Races . The usual service of 15 expresses from London will be maintained , and , in addition , a special express will leave King's Cross on each race day at 940 a . m ., luncheon cars for first and third class passengers being attached to this train . On Monday , the Gth instant , additional expresses will also leave King ' s Cross at 3 . 15 p . m . and 5 . 40 p . m . On Wednesday , the Sth instant ( St . Leger Day ) , an excursion will be run from Woolwich Arsenal , Woolwich Dockyard , Charlton , Maze Hill , Greenwich , Deptford , Blackheath , Nsw Cross , and Sparoad

, returning from Doncaster same day only . On the same day an excursion will be run from Moorgate , Aldersgate , Farringdon , and King ' s Cross ( G . N . ) , returning sam ; day or "Cup" day . For these trips the low fare of 12 s . 6 d ., third class , will be charged . AN EXPERIMENT with motors as dust-collectors is being made by the Chiswick L ' rb _ an District Council and is exciting a considerable am > unt of interest among other sanitary bodies . Keppel , being in attendance . The Osborne remained in Sheerness Harbour for the night .

THERE IS recorded a further decline in the death rate for the Metropolis last week . According to the Registrar-General's returns , the rate dropped from 24 . 2 to 20 4 per looo , there beinz still , however , an unusual number of deaths among children under five years of age from gastric maladies . The rate at Brighton has decreased to ig . S , and at Croydon to 21 . 1 per 1000 . THE CRICKET SEASON terminated on Wednesday , when the matches between Surrey and Sussex at Brighton ; Somersetshire and Hants at Taunton ; and Warwickshire and Derbyshire at Birmingham , had all of them to be abandoned in consequence of the rain . Lancashire wins the County Championship , with Surrey a good second , Essex third , Yorkshire fourth , and Gloucestershire fifth .

ON HER ARRIVAL at Balmoral on Wednesday afternoon , the Queen received an enthusiastic Highland welcome . Over the north entrance gate a triumphal arch of heather and evergreens was erected , with the motto " Ever Welcome . " The Farquharson and Balmoral Highlanders furnished a guard of honour , and at the call of Sir Fleetwood Edwards three cheers were given for her Majesty .

THE IRISH TEXTILE EXHIBITION was closed on Saturday evening last . Prior tothe closing of the Exhibition , an interesting ceremony was held in the Great Hall , which included the presentation of an address to the Countess Cadogan , as the organiser of the Exhibition , and a testimonial to Mr . M'Cartney Filgate in recognition of the zeal and devotion he has shown in its management . There was a large and distinguished company present .

BRO . LORD CHARLES BERESFORD has at length obtained flag-rank , and , it is needless to say , that his promotion to be Rear-Admiral is extremely popular throughout the service . He highly distinguished himself when in command of the Condor at _ the bombardment of the Alexandria forts in 1 SS 2 , and again on the Gordon Relief Expedition up the Nile in 18 S 5 , when he was mainly instrumental in extricating Sir Charles Wilson from a perilous position .

THERE WERE PRESENT at the annual church parade in Seaham Hall grounds on Sunday last by invitation of the Marquis of Londonderry as manyas 45 cyclist clubs , including some 150 ladies , among those who witnessed the proceedings being Bro . Sir Michael and Lady Lucy Hicks-Beach and Lord Henry Vane-Tempest . His lordship delivered a brief address , in which he expressed regret at the absence , through indisposition , of Lady Londonderry , and having extended to them all a hearty welcome , expressed the hope that they would continue to hold their parade in his grounds .

4 . 0 p . m . A FATAL ACCIDENT occurred to a train from Eastbourne to Tunbridge Wells on the London Brighton and South Coastline On Wednesday morning . Between Mayfield and Heathfield a train went over an embankment , and the driver was killed , some 13 persons , including the fireman and guard , injured , and about 17 others more or less severely shaken . The London Brighton and South Coast Railway has long enj > yed an immunity from accident , and it is probable that this one is dus to the long an 1 heavy rains which have fallen recently .

IT APPEARS to be established beyond doubt that the capture of Lundi Kotal was due to an act of treachery on the part of some members of the garrison , a number of whom have joined the enemy . But before the place was captured the garrison inflicted a heavy loss on the besiegers , with only a few casualties on their o » n side . Msanwhilj the preparations to deal effectively with the Afridis and the other tribes th it have attacked us are proceeding rapidly , and there seems to bs little d > ubt that this frontier revolt will soon be put down . We must , however , expect to hear of some sharp work , as the tribesmen have good fighting qualities in them .

THE QUEEN , accompanied by the Printers Henry of Battenberg and her children and the children of the Duke and Duchefs of York , and attended b y the ladies and gentlemen of her Court , left Osborne on Tuesday afternoon , and , having crossed the Solent in the Royal yacht , Alberta , to Portsmouth , proceeded at once to the special train in waiting and journeyed northwards to Balmoral , her Highland residence , which was reached on Wednesday afternoon . According to present arrangements , her Majesty will remain in Scotland till about the middle of November , when the Court will return South and take up their residence at Windsor .

From Newton Stewart the Duke and Duchess proceeded to Baron's Court , as guests of the Dike and Duchess of Abercorn there being a large house party invited to meet their Royal Highnesses , among them being Lord and Lady Rossmore , Bros . Lord Frederick and Lord Claud Hamil . on , and Sir W . Kaye .

THE CYCLISTS of various towns in East Kent held their annual Church Parade on Sunday , the 213 th ult ., the venue being Folkestone . The participating clubs , in addition to the local one , included Dover ( which sent the largest contingent ) , Margate , Hythe , Canterbury , and Heme Bay , whilst the visiting cyclists included some lrom the Catford Club . The muster was the largest yet held . At St . Michael ' s Church a short service was held , the Mayor and Corporation of Folkestone attending in State . Mr . Ben Greet read the lesson , and the incumbent , the Rev . E . Husband , delivered an address ,

speaking as a cyclist to cyclists . Having expressed the thanks of Mr . Greet , whom he described as an honoured member of an honoured profession , the rev . gentlemen said he considered God had given them the joy of cycling to enable them to keep their health , for he maintained that a bicycle was the best doctor a man could have . He concluded with an appeal for assistance for the Folkestone Hospital , the result of which was highly satisfactory .
