a considerable period as the late Pro Grand Master , Earl of Carnarvon , had been . The toast was received in silence . Bro . James , the I . P . M ., in proposing the toast of "The VV . M ., " said they would all bc pleased to respond to it as expressing their feelings of gratitude to him for his eminent qualifications as a Mason , and more particularly as VV . M . of the Ivy Lodge , and only hoped the Masters who followed

him would carry out the duties and give as great satisfaction as their present ruler had done up to the present time . The toast being received with great enthusiasm , The Worshipful Master , in reply , said , while thanking them for the kind reception they had given the toast , he did not intend making a long reply . His happiest moments had been spent in his mother lodge , and he hoped for many

years to meet and greet the members . But he begged them to remember that , although his own career in Freemasonry had been rapid , the science was not merely to be studied for the sake of gaining office , but it was one which should be acted up to in their daily lives . 'The Worshipful Master , in giving the toast of "The I . P . M ., " included the Past Masters , making a running

comment on each present , giving the I . P . M . especial credit for his zeal in inducing the brethren to attend lodges of instruction and make themselves perfect in the ritual . Bro . Bowley , he said , was a pattern to those who did not attend , and always ready for any duty that he might be requested to perform ; then Bro . Cooper , whose shining good humour always obtained for him a hearty reception ; while he must point out that on Bro . Eedle Bro .

Cooper ' s good nature had settled upon him , so that Bro . Eedle gained immensely by adding to his numerous good qualities good work , good nature , and good working ; and then referring to the I . P . M ., the W . M . expressed his warm thanks to him for his ready assistance on all occasions . Bro . Skegg , the Secretary , he considered , was the prop and mainstay of the lodge . The toast was received with acclamation .

Bro . James , the I . P . M ., thanked the VV . M . for his flattering remarks . He had only done his duty and would continue to do so . It had always been a pleasure to him to do anything that lay in his power for the lodge , when called upon , to the best of his ability . Bro . Foster said it had been a pleasure to assist , and would also be so for the future .

Bro . Skegg thanked the brethren for the kind reception they always gave him . Bro . Bowley said he congratulated himself that he had initiated the W . M ., who was the best worker he had known for some years . Bro . Cooper thanked the brethren for the great kindness he always had received since he had belonged to the

lodgeso distinguished for its VVorshipful Masters . Bro . Eedle also expressed his gratitude for the kindness he always received . " The Worshipful Master , in proposing "The Visitors , ' said it was a pleasure to have visitors . Bro . Cunliffe had been extremely kind to him in East Lancashire , so he prevailed upon him to visit the Ivy Lodge . Bro . Dehane ,

who represented the Chanty Committee of Essex , was also known to many present , and the oftener he visited there the better . The VV . M . said he had also particular pleasure in welcoming amongst them Bros . Burton , W . M . 733 , and Bates , VV . M . 2146 , and he should ask them all to reply . Bro . Cunliffe thanked the VV . M . for enabling him to

fulfil an old standing engagement . It was his first visit to a London lodge , although he had belonged to the Craft 21 years . He was delighted that he and the VV . M . had that day paid a visit to that splendid Institution the Girls ' School . To see the girls happy faces was indeed something to speak about , as also the admirable order everything was in at the Institution . Referring to the excellent working he had witnessed in the lodge , he regretted that in

his part of East Lancashire they had not the opportunity of making themselves so perfect owing to want of lodg'es of instruction , but he should put his shoulder to the wheel , and endeavour to establish one on the same lines as the one he visited the night previous—the Hyde Park—the first regular lodge of instruction he had ever attended . In conclusion , Bro . Cunliffe said the work- he had witnessed differed but slightly from that which was worked in his

province . Bro . Dehane thanked the W . M . and his officers for the reception the visitors had received and their great hospitality . He was pleased at the working , but there was one thing he considered should be strongly impressed upon those who brought candidates to lodges , viz ., not to let them attend their lodge a second and third time without being fully

prepared to do so in a proper manner . Many times he had witnessed the discomfort suffered by candidates in consequence . He was glad stub did not occur in the Ivy Lodge . Bro . Burton , beinga W . M ,, coincided in every word that had fallen from Bro . Dehane . He thanked them all for the enthusiastic reception and gracious welcome to the visitors , lie was delighted to hear the perfect ritual , and gratified at

the work , lt was his own province to dispense ritual , and he should certainly try to emulate the perfect style and easy grace and manner of the evening . The Ivy Lodge extends a hand of friendship , ancl throws off the cloak of stranger to put on the apparel of friendship . Bro . Bates said when he told the brethren at his lodge of the transactions ol that evening they would be pleased .

I he Chanty maul was passed round and realised a goodly sum . The toast of "The Officers" was received , and duly responded to . The Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings . In thc lodge ancl during the evening Hro . Rorke presided over the musical arrangements , assisted by Bros . Cunliffe , Eedle , Mucks , Hills , John Rorke , Barlow , Sinclair , and Oak .

Lodge of Loyalty ( No . 1607 ) . —The 14 th anniversary of this popular lodge was held at the London Tavern , Fenchurch-street , on Saturday , the 13 th ult ., when a large gathering of members and visitors assembled to witness the installation of the much esteemed Bro . C . H . Halford into the chair of King Solomon . The

occasion was more than usually interesting from the fact that the ceremony of installation was carried out by Bro . R . IT . Halford , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D . Herts , father of the VV . M . elect . Following the opening of the lodge and confirmation of the minutes , the VV . M ., Bro . Holsworth , raised to the Third Degree in a very creditable manner Bro . Horton , when he

vacated the chair in favour of Bro . R . II . Halford , who at once proceeded to install in a most feeling and impressive manner his son , Bro . C H . Halford , VV . M . of the Lodge of Loyalty . The investiture of officers was then proceeded with as follows : Bros . Hattersley , P . M ., S . W . ; F . VV . Rose , I . W . ; J . R . Large , P . M ., Treas . ; J . Newton , P . M ., Sec ; G . S . Denny , S . D . ; L . J . Dunham . J . D . ;

W . B . Vaile , I . C ; G . Wilkinson , D . C ; C . H . Webb , P . M ., and VV . L . Bankes , Stwds . ; and J . Verry , Tyler . The ballot having been taken for Messrs . R . C . Halford and Edward Godfrey , the W . M . duly initiated them into Freemasonry in a manner which evoked high eulogiums from the brethren present . After disposing of other business the lodge was closed , the brethren adjourning to a

sumptuous banquet , where the proverbial hospitality of the Loyalty Lodge was dispensed . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts , with that of " The Initiates , " having been given and responded to , Bro . Holsworth , I . P . M ., rose to propose " The Health of the VVorshipful Master , " which was heartily received . Bro . Halford , in responding , thanked the brethren for the

high honour conferred upon him , the honour being further appreciated in receiving the benefit of installation at the hands of his worthy father , and said he only hoped that at the termination of his year of office the brethren would not have regretted placing him in the chair of his lodge . The Worshipful Master then gave "Ihe Installing Master . "

Bro . R . H . Halford , in reply , referred to the great privilege he had enjoyed that evening in installing * his son VV . M . of the Loyalty Lodge , and thanked the I . P . M ., Hro . Holsworth , for that privilege , and the lodge for inviting him to perform the ceremony of installation . It was a great pleasure , too , to see his old friend , Bro . James Terry , P . M ., P . G . S . B ., who had initiated him into Freemasonry , also to

see his eldest son present , and to witness the initiation of his youngest son by the newly-installed VV . M ., and he trusted that they might long be spared to be of service to their respective lodges . The interesting ceremony of presenting a jewel to Bro . E . Holsworth , J . H . M ., for his services during the past year was then proceeded with , Bro . Holsworth suitably replying .

'The toast of " Ihe Masonic Institutions , to which the lodge is a good friend , was next honoured . Bro . 'Terry , in returning thanks , said that he was glad to hear the W . M . announce his intention to go up as Steward for the Benevolent Institution , and hoped the lodge would equal the generosity displayed on former occasions . It afforded him much pleasure to be present , having initiated into Freemasonry the father of the W . M ., and concluded a

felicitous speech by wishing the lodg -e every success . The toasts of "The Visitors , " "The Past Masters , " "The Officers , " and the Tyler ' s toast having been celebrated , the brethren dispersed , highly delighted at having taken part in an unusually interesting- gathering , and the enjoyment of the evening was further enhanced by a capital selection of music , rendered under the direction of Bro .
