in the Third Degree , and the ceremony of raising was ably rehearsed by the W . M ., with Bro . Pooler as candidate . Lodge was regularly closed down to the First Degree . Bros . J . Harling , P . ST . DUNSTAN'S CHAPTER ( No . 15 S 9 ) . — This chapter held a meeting , on the 24 th ult ., at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street . Among those in attendance were Comps . T . C . Walls , P . P . G . The minutes of the previous convocation having been read and confirmed , Comp . Dalwood proposed , and the M . E . Z . seconded , that the annual subscription be raised to

three guineas . The proposition , | after some discussion , was carried unanimously . The M . E . Z . having given a notice of motion that the present nights of meeting be changed , the chapter was closed , and the companions adjourned to the banquet , which was well served . The usual toasts followed , and were duly honoured .

PLUMSTEAD . —Pattison Chapter ( No . 913 ) - — A convocation of the above influential chapter took place on Thursday , the 19 th ult ., at the High School for Boys , Brook Hill-road , which was not only well attended , but remarkable for the elaboration of the ceremony of exaltation , as performed for the benefit of Bro . Walter Ducker , 700 , whoupon the occasion under notice , was exalted to the

, Supreme Degree . The furniture of the chapter is of the newest and roost artistic character , while the robes of the three first Principals are both superb and costly , so that the companions of a chapter about to be consecrated in the neighbourhood will easily understand the why and wherefore their request for the loan of them was ( with regret ) not acceded to .

Cook and Edmunds , the positions of S . N . and P . S . were filled ,

and admirably so , by Comps . Musto and Rees ; in fact , the admirable working of these companions , in their respective p laces , was highly commended . After the ordinary business had been disposed of , Bro . Ducker , having been approved of , was duly initiated , and although this was the first meeting since the installation of the Principals , the lengthy and beautiful histories and

legends of the Order were rendered , with one exception , without a halt or breakdown of any description ; thanks to the unceasing tuition of Ex . Comp . Denton , the Preceptor to both lodge and chapter of instruction attached to the " Pattison . " 'The request for the loan of the furniture and effects of the chapter above spoken of , having been considered and settled , the chapter was closed , and the

companions partook of a quiet little supper . On re-assembling round the social board , the usual loyal and Arch Masonic toasts were drank in bumpers . Comp . Hayes , 1 . P . Z ., in proposing the toast of | 'The M . E . Z ., " pointed out in forcible language the admirable manner in which Comp . Lloyd had upon that , his first night in the chair of Z .. worked the ceremonies appertaining to that office ,

and augered from that , and the good work done by him while in the chair of the lodge , a happy and prosperous year or office under his rule . Comp . Lloyd , in response , assured the brethren that he should do all he could to verify the prediction of Comp . Hayes , and cordially thanked the Second and Third Principals , and also Comps Musto and Rees , for their valuable

assistance that night . Comp . Spink , the only visitor present , met with an ovation when his name was coupled with the toast of " The Visitors . " 'The M . E . Z ., in the name of the chapter , heartily welcomed him home from Natal , where for the last three years he had been serving his Queen and country as Commissary Officer , in charge of stores at Newcastle , South Africa . That he was a good and zealous Mason they all knew , and when he , the M . E . Z ., mentioned the fact

that while at Natal , Comp . Spinks had gone two hundred miles up the country to assist in an installation meeting , they would at once endorse every word he had said as to the truly Masonic feeling that inspired their most excellent companion and brother . He asked them to drink the toast with all the enthusiasm it deserved , and it was so drank . In the course of his reply , and after thanking the companions for their kind reception of both himself and also the toast attached to his name , Comp . Spinks spoke at length of Masonry at the Cape and in Natal . He said

Masonry there was something mote than a mere name ; 1 lived , and moved , and evidenced itself by its large and expansive heart . There they met in halls dedicated to Masonry alone ; one lodge in which he had affiliated himself to there , met in a hall that cost £ 6000 to build . There they not only welcomed every Mason that came to them , but absolutely looked around to find Masons , and took them by

the hand , and found them a home in Masonry worthy of the name . He was proud to say that Masonry was flourishing in Natal ; and there they had , only recently , received a charter from the Grand Lodge of England to found a District Grand Lodge to rule and govern them . There he met Comp . and Bro . Deeves , who was commissary officer in charge of stores at Pietermaritzburg . That

brother , whom they all knew to be an indefatigable Mason , had started a lodge of instruction , and was from one end of Natal to the other looked up to as an authority in Masonry , and would , he ( Comp . Spinks ) felt sure , take a high position in the new District Grand Lodge . He was thankful to be home again ; but was ready , as a soldier , to go wherever duty called , and , wherever he went to , he should always remember with pleasure his Masonic friends in thanked the

Woolwich , Plumstead , and Natal . He again M . E . Z . and companions , and resumed his seat amid applause . The toast of "The Past Principals" followed , and Ex . Comp . Coupland responded , referring with pride and satisfaction to the honour conferred upon Comp . Butter , he having been invested as P . G . P . S . at the last Grand Chapter meeting . , " The Officers " and Janitor ' s toasts concluded the proceedings , which were of a most harmonious and enjoyable character .

TWICKENHAM . —Francis Burdett Chapter ( No . 1503 ) . —A convocation of this chapter was held at the Albany Hotel , on the 25 th ult ., when there were present among others : Comps . VV . customary toasts followed , "The Health of the Provincial Grand Officers " was acknowledged by Ex . Comp . Thrupp , P . G . N . The toast of " The Exaltee" drew from Comp . the Rev . L . M . D'Orsey , an excellent reply . "The Second and Third Principals " followed , and was responded to by Comps . Rushworth and VV . H . Saunders , and "The Health of the Officers , " coupled with the name of Comp . Walls terminated the proceedings .

MANCHESTER . —Chapter of Affability ( No . 3 , ) , _ The first meeting of this chapter for four months took place on Thursday , the 19 th ult ., in the Freemasons ' Hall , Cooper-street . Upon re-assembling in the lodge-room , Bro . William Henry Meakin , 1773 , was balloted for , and duly elected . He was afterwards exalted , together with Bro . John Garside , of the Affability Lodge ( who had

been previously elected ) , to the Holy Royal Arch Degree by the M . E . Z ., assisted by his officers , in a most efficient manner . The M . E . Z . afterwards delivered , with his customary ability , two of the lectures to the candidates , and Comp . J . E . Steward . H ., gave the other . The beautiful and somewhat lengthy ceremony being over , " Hearty good wishes" were expressed by the visitors ,

and the chapter was closed in the usual manner . The companions afterwards spent a pleasant couple of hours around the social board , where " The Healths of the Newly-Exalted Companions" were proposed and reponded to . "The Health of Comp . Nicholl , J ., " was proposed by the M . E . Z ., who remarked that it was a matter of serious resrret to them all that Comp . Nicholl was unfortunately

absent from their midst , owing to urgent business . He felt sure no one regretted his absence more than their esteemed companion himself , especially as he felt certain Comp . Nicholl had prepared himself to deliver one of the lectures , which , beyond a doubt , he was quite capable of delivering to the . satisfaction of them all . He felt sure Comp . Nicholl was thinking of them at the present time . The toast was drunk with the greatest enthusiasm .

METROPOLITAN CHAPTER OF IMPROVEMENT . —This eminent chapter of improvement has resumed its weekly meetings for the season at its old quarters in the Jamaica Tavern , St . MichaeTs-alley , Cornhill , and as usual , its convocations are well attended , notwithstanding the comparatively early hour ( 6 . 30 ) at

which they are held , lo suit the convenience of members living at a distance from the city . Comp . Brown still appears punctually at his post as Preceptor , and that being so it is almost needless to say that the ritual of Royal Arch Masonry under his auspices is correctly and strictly adhered to , and those aspirants for honours in this exalted

degree have only to attend to thc lecturing here so freely given to be qualified for any position that may be properly open to them . An adjournment was afterwards made to the customary banquet , at which the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and duly responded to . The Chief Adept , in proposing " The Health of the Celebrant , " congratulated the college on the appointment ,

and said he had no doubt whatever but that during the ensuing year Frater Murray would discharge the duties of Celebrant in as satisfactory a manner as he had done those of Secretary the past three years . The healthy tone of this college speaks well for its prosperity in the future .

Masonic Ball And Concert At Manchester.

MASONIC BALL AND CONCERT AT MANCHESTER .

The members of the Derby Lodge , No . 1055 , gave the first of a series of " petits bals " and concerts on the 16 th ult ., at their rooms , Bedford-street , Bury New-road , Manchester . With no exception , the artistes gave their services gratuitously , and a double share of thanks is due , and certainly was awarded to Mr . Chas . E . Stevens , the

popular comedian ( late of the Queen ' s Theatre ) , for so kindly volunteering his services , ~ and exerting himself so much to amuse the company . The entertainment commenced at eight o ' clock , with a pianoforte performance by Bro . W . G . Pettitt , " Theme Allemande , " which was followed by a song from Bro . P . H . Davis , entitled " The Flipitty Flop Young Man . " Bro . Thomas Campbell next cleverly executed a solo on the French flageolet , called

" Les Folies , " and which was loudly and deservedly applauded . Miss Morrison ( daughter of our highl y esteemed Bro . Alexander Morrison ) sang , with taste , ' •Thy voice is near ; " after which Bro . R . R . Lisenden ( by permission of Bro . J . H . Greenwood ) gave " The cruise of the Calabar . " " Give me the man of honest heart " was well sung by Bro . W . Alcock , as was " The Bugler . " by Mr . J . S . Cannan . The lion ' s share of applause was , however ,

showered upon Mr . Stevens , who fairly convulsed the audience with his melancholy comic effusion , "Put a plaster on my chest , " and " Qui va sans dire" was rewarded with a vociferous encore , in response to which ( in the second part ) , he sang George Grossmith's , " He went to a Party , " and later in the evening , by request of Bro . Lisenden ( in whose name the song was set down ) , " The Muddle-puddle Porter . " Each song

was most funnily rendered , and provoked much laughter ; in fact , it is not too much to say that the audience would willing have listened to half a dozen songs more from this clever comedian . The remainder of the entertainment was carried out by Bro . D . D . Macpherson , 163 , who read a selection from Mark Twain's " Tramp abroad ; " Bro . Thomas Campbell , who performed a selection from " La Sonnambula , " on the violin , very ably ; Miss Morrison , who

sang barney U'Hea ; " Bro . W . Alcock , "My sweetheart whenaboy ; "Mr . J . S . Carman , "Sailing ; "and Bro . Pettitt , who played the grand valse " Fenella , " on the pianoforte . The concert was undoubtedly a great success , and was much enjoyed by a numerous and fashionable audience , amongst whom we noticed Bro . Alfred and Mrs . Turner , Bro . Morris and Mrs . Davis , Mrs . Joseph Warren , Bro .

T . H . Glendmnmg , Bro . Alexander and Miss Morrison , Bro . Thos . E . Rigby , Mrs . Crockford , Mrs . Lisenden , and others . After the concert the company partook of refreshment , and eventually indulged in the mazy dance until the small hours of the morning . We must not omit to give a special meed of praise to Bro . Thomas E . Rigby , under whose superintendence the- programme was executed .

Bro . J . listhck , J . ., at Chacewatcr , has been unanimously elected W . M . of the Masonic Mark Lodge at Chacewatcr , for the ensuing year , and Bros . J . Niness , P . M ., and W . Lean were nominated as treasurer and tyler . The installation takes place on the fourth Monday in November .
