PRESENTATIONS AT SOUTHAMPTON .
At the meeting of the Southampton Lodge , No . 354 , held at the Alasonic Hall , Albion-place , on Thursday evening , the 19 th ult ., Bro . H . C . Ashdown , the W . AL , presiding , two very interesting presentations were made to the lodge by members of it . The first , given by Bro . F . Dunsford , P . M ., is a
handsome casket intended for use as a Charity-box , made from a fine block of boe ; oak , given by Bro . H . Lashmore , and found some years ago below the bed of Southampton Water during the first of the dredging operations of the Harbour Board upon the Netley shoal . The wood is as black as ebony , and has been beautifully worked up by Mr . Boniface , who designed
the casket and executed the carving , which includes several Masonic emblems and the Southampton Shield . The box altogether is a handsome and interesting addition to the lodge furniture . The second gift , made by Bro . G . J . Tilling , P . AL , consisted of a parchment address , presented to the late Bro . J . R . Stebbing some 30 years ago by the brethren
of the Southampton lodges , and bearing the autographs of many well-known Masons who have gone to their rest , including Bros . VV . C . Huinphrys , VV . Hickman , George Dunlop , W . Furber , E . T . Howell , W . S . Oke , J . George , G . Lungley , C . Bromley , and one or two others . This address was found among some waste papers at Mr . Gilbert's book store , Above Bar , and was
given by Mr . Gilbert to Bro . Tilling for presentation to the lodge . Its fortunate recovery will rjnk with that of ihe interesting minute bcok belonging to the Royal Gloucester Chapter , which was found among a lot of odds and ends purchased at a sale b y Bro . J . E .
Le Ftuvrc . It was returned to the chapter , and found to contain the missing link in the chain of evidence necessary to prove the title of the chapter to the centenary wairant , which was afterwards obtained from Grand Chapter . Our brother , in a little over two years ( a short time for the Craft ) , has been unusually rapid in attaining his position as a good working W . M ., for which he is to be commended and congratulated . A report of the Bishopsgate Lodge will be found in another column .
BRO . C . J . TAYLOR , Whose installation as W . M . of the Strand Lodge No . 198 7 , is recorded in another column , was initiated in the Asaph Lodge , No . 1319 , in 18 7 8 , during the late Bro . Geo . Buckland ' s year as W . M ., having been proposed by Bro . Buckland and seconded by Bro .
Lionel Brough . He joined the Strand Lodge in 1886 , and served every office from Assistant Steward , and is now , by the unanimous wish of the lodge , its VV . M . Bro . Taylor has gained a thorough mastery of the ritual , and his unhesitating delivery and distinct utterance , qualities which we would commend to aspirants for the chair , render his working more than ordinarily
effective . Bro . Taylor is , we understand , a song writer and composer of some pretentions , and we can speak of one , "The Masons' Sign , " as being one of the best of his numerous Alasonic songs . At the Strand Lodge the meetings would be considered wanting in completeness without it . The Strand Lodge is quite safe in Bro . Taylor's hands . — •? - -
