The ceremony of installation was performed in a manner which left nothing to be desired by the retiring VV . M ., Bro . John T . Hogg , after which the W . M ., with a few words of kindly appreciation and encouragement to each , invested his officers as follows : Bros . John

T . Hogg , P . G . Treas ., I . P . M . ; John Sheridan , S . W . ; T . P . Kerman , J . W . j Rev . E . Woodhouse Shepherd , M . A ., Chap . ; ( Bro . Dr . VVilliams , P . M ., P . P . A . G . Roberts and A . M . Bailey , Stewards ; and Amos Jenkins , Tyler . A hearty vote of thanks was given to Bro . John T . Hogg for the splendid manner in which he had finished up his year ' s work that afternoon , and the VV . M . requested the D . P . G . M . to present to Bro . Hogp a handsome Past Master ' s jewel for his inestimable services during the year . This the D . P . G . M . did in a very nice manner . The I . P . M .

feelingly replied , thanking the brethren for their great kindness throughout the year , and for their vote of thanks and jewel that day . The VV . M . then thanked Bro . Marmaduke Tennant , D . P . G . M ., for attending that afternoon , and called on the brethren to welcome him in the usual manner . The D . P . G . M . briefly replied , after which the visitors were welcomed in like manner . Bros . G . Clarry ,

W . M . 36 , and Steeds , W . M . 1323 , responded for the whole of the visitors . The other business being transacted , including several propositions for initiation and joining , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Assembly Room , Town Hall , for dinner . Here the brethren were joined by the ladies , and the

effect of the room when all were seated was very pretty , the ladies' bright dresses greatly relieving the brethren ' s sombre black , which , in its turn , was much improved by the Masonic clothing , a dispensation to wear the same having been obtained . The tables were nicely decorated with flowers and fruits , by Mr . Phelps , in his usual style , and the beautiful hall , with its splendid crystal chandeliers , handsome ceiling and magnificent paintings added greatly

to the general effect . 'Ihe W . M . presided , and was supported by theD . P . G . M . ° n his right , and the I . P . M ., with Mrs . and Miss Hogg , on his left , and nearly all the Masters and Past Masters mentioned above with their wives , sisters , & c , the other tables being used by the brethren and their ladies . About 150 sat down to dinner . This being disposed of and dessert commenced , the W . M . rose to propose the first toast , " The Queen and the

Provincial Meetings.

Craft . " Given , he said , in the bold form in which it stood in the _ toast list would be sufficient to gain for it a hearty reception . The Queen , known throughout the world , and where known , loved , [ respected , and admired as probably the purest , noblest , and best Monarch that ever sat on any throne . The Craft they loved so well that he dared no more than mention it . The connection bet . veen the two could better be understood when it was remembered that ever

since her Majesty's great grandfather , just a century before her Majesty ' s accession to the throne , became a member of the Craft down to the much-lamented Duke of Clarence , her Royal house , with only a short interval , had furnished a constant succession of splendid members of the Craft , and Masons were not likely to forget the debt of gratitude due to her Majesty ' s father , the Duke of Kent , who , acting in concert with his brother , the Duke of , 5 uss 2 x , gave them the

inestimable boon of the United Grand Lodge of 1 S 13 . Adding to all this her Majesty ' s warm interest in the generous support of our Masonic Charities , he need offer no apology for asking them to drink enthusiastically the Queen and the Craft . The W . M . next proposed "The M . W . G . M ., the Prince of Wales , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " speaking in eulogistic terms of his Royal Highness ,

of the Earl of Lathom , Pro G . M ., the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , D . G . M ., and the other Grand Officers , coupling with it the name of the D . P . G . M ., Bro . Marmaduke Tennant , P . A . G . D . C . England . Bro . Captain Homfray , D . P . G . M . Monmouth , who usually responded to that toast , being unavoidably absent , the D . P . G . M . briefly replied , and informed the brethren that the Grand Secretary and Bro . Sir lohn B . Monckton

had promised , if at all possible , to be present at the consecration of the new lodge in Cardiff shortly . The W . M . then proposed the toast of "The R . W . Prov . G . M ., Sir George Elliot , Bart ., the W . D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officer ? , Present and Past , " and regretted that the brethren in the province did not see more of the Provincial Grand Master , but , of course , his time was much taken up , and as

long as the Great Architect spared to them the VVorshipful Deputy , the province could not suffer , as they all knew how thoroughly Bro . Tennant devoted himself to thc good of the province . He could not in his presence say all he should like to say , but he could say that the more the D . P . G . M . came amongst them the better pleased they were , and he was delighted to know he intended to visit the Tennant Lodge again very soon . He spoke highly of the

Prov . G . Oflicers , Present and Past , thanking them very heartily for their presence , and congratulating himself and the lodge on the fact that over 30 Prov . G . Officers had honoured the lodge that day . He therefore called upon them to give a hearty reception to the toast , coupling with it the name of the D . P . G . M . Bro . Tennant rose to respond , and received an ovation . He thanked them for their hearty reception of the toast .

thanked them for the P . G . M ., for himself , and for the Prov . G . Officers , agreeing with the W . M .-that Sir George lost a great deal by not attending such meetings as the present , and , after acknowledging the services and support of the Prov . G . Officers , the D . P . G . M ., in a most happy and humorous speech , proposed " The W . M ., " telling them at the outset that , instead of singing his praises , he intended telling them some of the Worshipful Master ' s

faults . Almost every sentence of his address was received with hearty applause and laughter , amidst which he resumed his seat , and left the VV . M . to respond to as difficult a toast as could possibly be imagined . On rising the VV . M . was received with applause . At the commencement lie endeavoured to reply to what had been said by the D . P . G . M . Going on to respond to the toast , he assured the brethren he was deeply sensible of the proud

position in which they had placed hun as Master of the Tennant Lodge , and a ruler in the Craft—a Craft destined , as he believed , to have an important and far-reaching influence of the future of the human race ; a Craft which , knowing no distinction of race , or peopls , or clime , carried through the civilised world the beautiful principles and tenets of our Order , and , bridging Over all space and all time , stretched forth its hand and firmly grasped the hand

of a brother at the uttermost parts of the earth , and would , he believed , be instrumental in bringing about that muchto-be-desired time when the sword should be beaten into the plough share , and nations know war no more . He assured them that in season and out of season he would do everything in his power to promote the good of the Craft in general , and , of course , the Tennant Lodge in particular , and with the help of the splendid Past Masters of

the lodge , brethren who had given him every help and encouragement , and had promised to do so in the future . With the good staff of officers it was his privilege to have , and the compact body of brethren on the floor of the lodge , he hoped so to direct the affairs of the lodge that next year —with the experience of history to guide them in forming a correct estimate—they would not regret placing him in the chair , and he trusted his year of office would end as brightly

as it had begun . He thanked them most heartily for their Wnd reception of tbe toast . The VV . M . again rose , and said it was not often a W . M . commenced his year of oflice by performing such a pleasant duty as it was now his privilege to do . The toast of "The Installing Master" would be varied that night . During the year Bro . Hogg had endeared himself to every member of the lodge , and not only to them , but to the other Masons

of the province . Those who were present at the last meeting of the lodge were aware that the members who had been initiated by Bro . Hogg during the year ( numbering about 27 ) presented him with a handsome silver tea and coffee service , as an expression of their gratitude and esteem . The oflicers of the lodge , with Bros . S . Jones and A . Roberts , who acted as Stewards at the summer outing , and Bro . O'Neill , at a picnic to which the W . M . and Mrs . Hogg

invited them , afterwards decided to do something also to mark their appreciation of the W . M . 's character and services , but decided that it should take the form of a pretention to Mrs . Hogg , who had in every possible way assisted her husband , and found a place in the hearts of his brethren , He ( the W . M . ) therefore had much pleasure in asking Hro .

Hogg , on behalf of the officers who served under him and the brethren named , to accept for Mrs . Hogg a presentation clock . Mrs . Hogg had at a time of great pain and bodily weakness , with pure unselfishness , insisted on her husband undertaking the duties of the chair , and whenever possible assisted him in his work ; as a true wife , willing when necessary to stand aside , and when necessary so to do , to come forward ; as every true woman valued most the little

gifts of those they loved , which showed a loving thoughtfulness on the part of the giver , so he hoped this timepiece would be looked upon by Mrs . Hogg , and that the tick of the clock would remind her of the brethren of the Tennant Lodge . He hoped that Bro . and Mrs . Hogg would have many happy years together , and afterwards together enjoy an eternity where time should be no more .

Bro . John T . Hogg , I . P . M ., feelingly replied . He thanked the W . M . for the very kind words he had used , and all the brethren for the extreme kindness shown to him on every occasion during his year of office , though he had met them a great number of times in lodge and out , he had been fortunate enough not to have a single unpleasantness or harsh word with any member . They had worked

together well and harmoniously , and in spite of all the work , it had been the most happy year of his life . He and Mrs . Hogg would greatly prize their beautiful gifts , and , as the W . M . had said , every tick of the clock would remind them of the brethren and the happy hours spent amongst them during his year of office . He should be delighted to continue his services and to support the VV . M .,

as Bro . Bailey had so faithfully supported him , and again thanking them , he concluded by wishing the VV . M . a happy and prosperous year of office . Bro . Thos . Evans , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , in a hearty manner , proposed " The Ladies , " to which Bro . Thos . Matthews , P . M ., P . P . S . G . W ., happily responded , drawing a most dismal picture of a man not blessed with a better-half , and

claiming for the beautiful fair sex almost every possible virtje and good quality . Bro . Hogg briefly proposed "The Visitors , " and the time for the first part of the evening ' s proceedings being up , called upon Bro . Harry Samuels , W . M . of Bute Lodge , to respond for the whole of the visitors , which he did in a hearty way , thanking the W . M . and all for a most happy

and enjoyable evening . The evening ' s proceedings were enlivened by songs being rendered between the speeches . Mrs . Pudge , Miss Jenkins , Bros . W . B . Ferrier , P . M . 9 G 0 , P . P . G . Reg . ; Thos . Evans , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C ; and others , ably assisting in this direction , and Bro . John Sheridan , in his own

splendid style , gave a very good recitation . The second part of the proceedings consisted of dancing , which , to beautiful music by Mr . Arthur Johnson's band , was kept up till 2 a . m ., and closed a most successful and enjoyable annual festival . The jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .

M ., P . P . A . G .

Provincial Meetings.

gifts of those they loved , which showed a loving thoughtfulness on the part of the giver , so he hoped this timepiece would be looked upon by Mrs .
