Bro . Dr . Herbert Alder Smith delivered a lecture at the Young Men ' s Christian Association , in Aldersgatc-strect , recently on "Medical Emergencies . " The lecturer explained various maladies , and the best remedies to be adopted until the arrival of a doctor . Amongst

others he mentioned fits , insensibility due to apoplexy , opium poisoning , epilepsy , injuries to the brain , and blood poisoning . The lecturer urged that all persons in a comatose state should be seen by a doctor before being taken to the station as intoxicated .

A desperate affray with poachers is reported lo have occurred on the estate of Bro . Sir Harcourt Johnstone , Bart ., near Scarborough , on Tuesday night . Two or three game watchers met with a gang of live poachers , and a terrible struggle ensued , in course of which one of the keepers had his arm broken , and another was very severely injured .

PRIZE ESSAYS . —The title of the essay to which the " Howard Medal" of the Statistical Society will be awarded in November , 1 SS 1 , is "On the Jail Fever , from the earliest Black Assize to the last recorded outbreaks in recent limes . " The essays should be sent in on or before
