We would remind our readers that the third annual Hastings and St . Leonards Masonic Benevolent Ball will be held at the Royal Concert Rooms , St . A VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT . —A restaurant ,

devoted to the sale of vegetarian dishes , has been opened by Messrs . Spiers and Pond , opposite the Royal Courts of Justice . There poriidges , vegetable soups , and entrees , savouries , gr . lled vegetables , salads , hot and cold sweets , and so forth , may be obtained at prices which will astonish people who have been accustomed to pay for butcher ' s meat at their meals . All sorts of beverages are to be had

on demand , but as the restaurant is fully licensed ( the only vegetarian one with that privilege in London ) , mild te ; r , bitter , stout , and claret can also be obtained at remarkably reasonable prices . In these days , when cheap meals are a matter of great importance to very many people , these vegetable dinners will be very welcome ; and it may be added that we have high medical authority as to

their wholesomenes-s and nutritious qualities . Bro . Robert Clemow , who is retiring from the management ol Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street , has taken the Peacock Hote ) , Boston , Lincolnshire , and it has been rightly resolved by a number of his Masonic friends to raise and present that worthy brother with a testimonial in recognition of the great zeal and services he has rendered to the Craft both in his Masonic and managerial capacity .

Bro . Henry Kimm , of Coleman-street and St . Leonard's-on-Sea , has again been appointed to conduct the auction sale of cattle at the Christmas fat stock show to be held at Battle . Amongst the contributors being his Grace the Duke of Cleveland , K . G ., Lord and Lady Brassey of Bulekely , Col . Brookfield , M . P ., for East Sussex , and others .

A correspondent has drawn our attention to a coincidence , which is certainly curious . The Christian name ( Matthew ) of the first , and the surnames ( White and Ridley ) of the second and third of the brethren invested as P . G . Stewards of Northumberland on the iCth ult . by the newly-installed P . G . Master of that province , together make up the name of that distinguished brother—Sir " Matthew White Ridlev , " Bart ., M . P .

NEW NURSERY PATENT . —A want in this description of furniture has been supplied by Messrs . J . C . Porrett and Co ., of Sunderland , who have patented a combined chair and stool . When closed , it is apparently only a footstool or child's table ; it can be opened almost instantly to form a handy comfortable little chair . The various parts are excellently contrived , and it is a really substantial and ornamental piece of furniture , which only requires to

be seen to be appreciated . Comp . J . H . Sillitoe , P . G . H . East Lancashire , assisted by Comp . VV . VV . Dawson , P . G . D . C , installed Comps . W . Hutchinson , Z . ; the Rev . VV . R . Clayton , H . ; and R . Pickering , J ., on the 116 th anniversary of the Chapter of Unanimity , No . 42 , Bury , on Tuesday , the 23 rd ult . This being the first Masonic work undertaken by Comp . Sillitoe since his Mediterranean voyage and

restoration to health , a very hearty welcome was accorded to him by the companions present . PROVINCE OF EAST LANCASHIRE . —At a large and influential meeting of brethren , held at the Swan Hotel , Bolton , prior to the meeting of Provincial Grand Ledge on Wednesday , the 24 th November , it was decider to present to the R . vV . Provincial Grand Master , Col . Le Gendre N . Starkie , his portrait , painted in Masonic

costume . For the purpose of carrying out this object , a strong Committee was appointed , with Bro . Geo . Mellor , Deputy Prov . Grand Master , as Chairman ; Uro . G . P . Brockbank , Treasurer , and Bro . J . H . Sillitoe , Hon . Secretary . The ceremony of installation will be worked in its entirety at the Brixton Lodge of Instruction , No . 1949 , to be held at the Prince Regent , Dulwich-road , Heme Hill ,

S . E ., on Tuesday , the 7 th inst ., by Bro . J . W . Watts , P . M . 507 , P . Z . 720 , when it is anticipated a large Board of Installed Masters will be formed , which will be duly opened and closed—a portion of the ceremony seldom carried out . Lodge will be opened at 8 o ' clock p . m . precisely , and after same is closed the usual monthly meeting of the Benevolent Association will be held .

Bro . Robert Berridge , the popular G . D . of C . ol Mark Grand Lodge , was installed on Tuesday , by Bro . Alfred Williams , as Worthy Master of the Playing Card Makers . The banquet at the Albion was a most cheery gathering , and was certainly remarkable for the number of Freemasons present . Bro . Glashier , P . G . D ., waxed eloquent on the labours of both "Houses of Parliament ;" liro . R . P . Spice did ample justice to "The Sister Services ;"

Bro . Godson , M . P ., pronounced a well deserved eulogium on the virtues of " The New Master ; " Bro . Altman boldly defended " The Coal and Wine Dues ; " and Bro . Broadley in felicitous terms immortalized '' The Past Masters , " amongst whom were Bros . A . Williams , Spice , and Saillard . Even Bro . Augustus Harris tore himself away from his pantomime preparations to be present . At the last meeting of the Vigilance Chapter

( R . A . ) , No . in , Darlington , Comp . Dr . Hill Drury presented to the chapter a handsome white satin veil , lined with scarlet silk , and embroidered with Masonic emblems . Earlier in the year Bro . Hill Drury presented an alms bag , in blue velvet and embroidered with the square and compasses , to the Marquess of Ripon Lodge , No . 1489 , of which he is a member ; and at the same time he covered the back of the harmonium of the Restoration

Lodge , No . in , with blue canvas , bearing in the centre a Masonic design worked in silver thread . The whole of these articles , which have been much admired , were manufactured at the extensive establishment of Bro . Geo , Kenning . Bro . G . T . Brown , host of the Beaufort Arms , Chelsea , who is P . M . of the Prosperity Lodge , No . 65 , and P . Z . of its chapter , and for the last ten years has

discharged the arduous duties of Secretary of the former , was presented at a meeting on the 25 th ult . with a very handsome testimonial , consisting of a resolution of thanks , beautifully emblazoned on vellum and framed , a large gilt and blue enamel clock with side ornaments , and a gold brooch and earrings , set with brilliants , for Mrs . Brown . Bro . Brown has done valuable service to his lodge , especially in connection with the Charities , which have

benefited , through his exertions , to the extent of over £ 2000 , and well deserves such a testimonial to which the lodge and nearly every one of its members contributed . Now that it is definitely settled that the Colonial and Indian Exhibition will not re-open next year , the attention of the amusement-loving public will be undividedly directed to thc American Exhibition , to be opened May 2 nd , 18 S 7 , at Earl ' s Court , Kensington . The Jubilee year then

will be made additionally attractive by the enterprise of our Yankee cousins in coming across the ocean to submit for our inspection , criticism , and haply our approval , the results of their last half century of industry . Already a large force of men are at work on the grounds at Earl ' s Lourt . The land is now graded , the drain pipes laid , the concrete foundations in place , and the main building is in process of construction . On that portion of the grounds

set apart for the use of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Exhibit the arena is laid and ballasted , the camp staked out , and the erection of the grand stand will shortly be commenced . HOLLOWAY ' S PILLS . —The sudden changes , frequent fogs , and pervading dampness sorely impede the vital functions , and conduce to ill-health . The remedy for these diseases lies in some purifying medicine , like these Pills , which is competent to grapple with thc

mischief at its source , and stamp it out without fretting the nerves or weakening the sybtem . Holloway's Pills extract from the blood all noxious matters , regulate the action of every disordered organ , stimulate the liver and kidneys , and relax thc bowels . In curing chest complaints these Pills are remarkably effective , especially when aided by friction of the Ointment on its walls . This double treatment will ensure a certain , steady , and beneficent progress , and sound health will soon be re-established , —ADVT ,

Weare asked Lo announce that Bro . Berry , P . M ., will work the installation ceremony , on Tuesday , the 7 th instant , in the Yarborough Lodge of Instruction , No . 534 , at the Green Dragon , Stepney . The Chiswick Lodge , No . 2012 , is giving further signs of its interest in Constitutional Masonry , a proposition for the establishment of a Royal Arch chapter in

connection with it , which Bro . Gardner is doing his utmost to promote , having already made considerhble headway . We regret very much that in our report last week of the installation meeting of the Shadwell Clerke Lodge , No . 1910 , Bro . H . P . Goodall , one of the worthy Past Masters of the lodge , should have been erroneously described as Bro . H . Tisdale .

Bro . James Pettigrew was installed W . M . of the St . Clair Lodge , No . 3 G 2 , Glasgow , at the meeting held on Monday , the 22 nd ult . The reports for the past year show the lodge to be in a very prosperous condition both financially and otherwise . Bro . W . H . Pearse was installed W . M . of the St . Margaret ' s Lodge , No . 1 S 72 , Surbiton , at its annual

meeting on Thursday , the iSth ult . The brethren afterwards dined together at the Mitre Hotel , Hampton , under the presidency of their new chief . The annual meeting of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templars of Maryland was to be held on Tuesday , the 23 rd ult . The 34 th annual conclave of that of Pennsylvania will take place in Philadelphia , in May , 1 SS 7 ,

and already the subordinate commanderies of that city are making grand preparations for the meeting . Sir Knight G . S . Graham is the present G . Commander . The Fifteen Sections will be worked at the Royal Savoy Lodge of Instruction , No . 1744 , at the Yorkshire Grey , London-street , Fitzroy-square , VV ., on Thursday , the gth inst ., commencing at 7 p . m . preciselv . Bro .

| . Paul will preside as W . M ., and Bros . J . Hemming and H . Dickey will occupy the chairs of Senior Warden and Junior Warden respectively . Bro . E . Far-vig , P . M . 180 , Preceptor to the St . James' Union Lodge of Instruction , worked the Fifteen Sections in that lodge of instruction on Monday last , when there was a large attendance of brethren . A vote of

thanks was proposed and carried unanimously to Bro . E . Farwig , for his admirable and beautiful working , and he in thanking the brethren for the vote spoke most highly of those who had assisted in working the Sections . Union Waterloo Lodge , No . 13 , which was founded originally in 1761 and reconstituted in 1785 , will hold its centenary celebration on Wednesday next , the Sth

inst . The lodge meeting will take place in the Masonic Hall , Woolwich , at 2 . 30 p . m ., and the banquet will follow at the Holborn Restaurant at 6 . 30 p . m . At the meeting of the Surbiton Lodge , No . 2146 , Surbiton , on the iSth ult ., Bro . Gibbes , on behalf of the officers and members , presented Bro . R . Sebastian Hart , P . P . G . D . Surrey , with a handsome gold Past

Master ' s jewel in recognition of their esteem and of the services he had rendered to the lodge . At the regular meeting of the Crook Lodge , No . 2019 , on Wednesday , the 24 th ult ., Bro . Samuel Holdsworth , ex-mayor of Durham had conferred upon him the compliment of honorary member of the lodge in token of the important services he had rendered in the formation

of the lodge and the admirable manner in which he had fulfilled the duties of its first W . M . A supper at the Surtees Hotel , under the presidency of Bro . R . Hardy . W . M ., followed . The Masonic Hall , Nottingham , will be the scene of a somewhat rare event on Wednesday next , the Sth inst ., when two new Royal Arch Chapters—the Annesley , No .

1435 , and the Carnarvon , No . 1909—will be consecrated and their respective Three Principals installed . The consecrating officer will be Comp . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , G . Scribe E ., who will be assisted on the occasion by Comps . F . A . Philbrick , Q . C ., G . Reg ., and Prov . G . Sup . Essex , as H . ; R . F . Vernon Bussell , P . P G . J ., as J . ; and Robt . Berridge , P . G . D . C . The Provincial Grand Chapter will

open at 2 . 45 p . m ., and the banquet is fixed for 7 p . m . A very successful entertainment in aid of the West Newton Church Choir Fund was given by Bro . W . A . Baskcomb , at the Sandringham Club , West Newton , on Saturday last . There was a very full attendance , and the various items were well received , some of them indeed , and notably a pianoforte solo ( Chopin ) by Mrs . Baskcomb ,

musical governess to the Princesses Louise , Victoria , and Maud of Wales , and a violin solo ( Vieuxtemps ) by Mdmlle . Anna Lang , a serenata , sung by Miss Eleanor Rees , with violin accompaniment by Mademoiselle Lang , being enthusiastically applauded . Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales had very kindly given the meeting their patronage , but were unfortunately unable to be present .

In the unavoidable absence of R . W . Bro . Wm . Pearce , M . P ., Prov . G . M . of Glasgow , Bro . J . M . Oliver , Prov . G . S . W ., presided at the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge held in the Masonic Hall , 213 , Buchanan-stceet , on Tuesday , the 23 rd ult . The financial statement of the Prov . G . Treasurer for the past year indicated a great degree of prosperity , the balance in

favour of Provincial Grand Lodge being in excess of £ 63 . The statement was accepted and a hearty vote of thanks passed to the Auditors fur their services . The appointment and investiture of the office beaters for the year took place in the course of the meeting . One of the most interesting stands at the International Food and Cookery Exhibition at Westminster

Aquarium , is that of Messrs . George Mason and Co ., of 417 , King's-road , Chelsea . It is very common to see specialities brought forward for the especial behoof of invalids , but here we hive it on the most undisputed medical testimony that Mason ' s essence of beef , veal , mutton , and chicken , are the most nutritious and wholesome that can be supplied . Concentrated beef

tea , in skins and tins , is made of the finest British beef , and about an ounce dissolved in half-a-pint of boiling water will make , in one minute , a delicious and nourishing cup of pure beef tea . There are other interesting specialities at this stand , which visitors should inspect , including the beef tea jelly , the concentrated meat lozenges , turtle soup for invalids , and the "O . K . " sauce and relish , which need only to be tasted to be appreciated .

Already a large force of men are at work on the grounds at Earl ' s Lourt .
