ABOUT 11 0 clock on Sunday night last a lire broke out at Wellington Barracks . When lhe soldiers turned out volumes of smoke were pouting from the front part of the building facing Bird Cage Walk . A large force of firemen gathered on the scene in view oi the serious outbreak which occurred on November 9 th , iSgo . The fire was found to be burning in the " E " block , in the Pioneers' portion of the barracks , where a great quantity ot straw had got alight . AT THE Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge held on Wednesday , Bro . Sir Joseph C . Dimsdale , Past G . Treas ., rose and informed the Grand Master in the chair , that he had to hand tothe Grand Secretary a cheque for £ 242 ios . for Guy ' s Hospital . The amount had been raised by guinea subscriptions from various lodges in answer to circulars which had been addressed to them and in which scheme Bro . C . E . Keyser took a prominent part . Grand Lodge had given 500 guineas and Grand Chapter 103 guineas to Guy's Hospital Fund , and the applications made to the different lodges were
for the purpose of raising £ , 1000 to endow a Masons bed in Guys Hospital , thereby showing stilljurther interest that Masons took in acts of charity . There were promises of more responses to the appeal and he hoped that before many months were over to hand to the Grand Secretary an additional sum . He had to thank Bro . All clergymen whe have collected and presented offertories for the Fund have the right to attend with two laymen of their congregation at the meeting at the Mansion House when the fund is distributed . Up to the time of the Conference , although there were many growls both loud and deep , from the poor parsons who loved the soothing influences of pipe or cigar , still the authorities were deaf to the appeals for a smoking room . came the advent of American and Colonial Bishops to the Conference , so it was found necessary to provide them some place to smoke in , to prevent the scandal of Bishops in aprons and gaiters walking up and down the precincts of Westminster behind clays and briar-roots . The room is comfortably fitted with writing materials , lounging chairs , and the usual accessories of the smoking room .

W . — Christmas Appeal . —This hospital , which w ? s founded in 1752 , and is the largest of its kind in Great Britain , received 1151 patients into the Wards last year and in addition attended 1122 patients at their own homes . The expenditure for the year amounted to £ 43 00 . while the income reached £ 3600 only , thus leaving a deficit of £ 700 . To meet the great pressure on the accommodation of the hospital an extension is being
carried out and a new Nurses Home will shoitly be commenced . For these works upwards of £ -2 , 003 will be needed . The Committee of Management earnestly appeal for contributions to both the Building Fund and the general Maintenance Fund , which may be sent to the bankers , Messrs . AT THE Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge held on Wednesday , Bro . Sir Joseph C . Dimsdale , Past G . Treas ., rose and informed the Grand Master in the chair , that he had to hand tothe Grand Secretary a cheque for £ 242 ios . for Guy ' s Hospital . The amount had been raised by guinea subscriptions from various lodges in answer to circulars which had been addressed to them and in which scheme Bro . C . E . Keyser took a prominent part . Grand Lodge had given 500 guineas and Grand Chapter 103 guineas to Guy's Hospital Fund , and the applications made to the different lodges were
for the purpose of raising £ , 1000 to endow a Masons bed in Guys Hospital , thereby showing stilljurther interest that Masons took in acts of charity . There were promises of more responses to the appeal and he hoped that before many months were over to hand to the Grand Secretary an additional sum . He had to thank Bro . Keyser for the very energetic manner he had worked in the matter , and the brethren for the kind and generous response that had been made to his appeal . BRO . METROPOLITAN HOSPITAL SUNDAY F UND . —A strong opposition is being organised by the Anti-Vivisection Society to any part of the funds collected on Hospital Sunday being given to hospitals having Medical Schools or Laboratories where vivisection is carried on attached to them . All clergymen whe have collected and presented offertories for the Fund have the right to attend with two laymen of their congregation at the meeting at the Mansion House when the fund is distributed . It is expected a number of those so privileged will attend this year and make a strong protest . MR . GATES , O . C ., and the Benchers of the Inner Temple , entertained some 300

CHURCH HOUSE SMOKING ROOM . —One of the _ results of the late gathering of Bishops at the Lambeth Conference , has been the fitting up of a comfortable smoking room at the Church House . Up to the time of the Conference , although there were many growls both loud and deep , from the poor parsons who loved the soothing influences of pipe or cigar , still the authorities were deaf to the appeals for a smoking room . Then
came the advent of American and Colonial Bishops to the Conference , so it was found necessary to provide them some place to smoke in , to prevent the scandal of Bishops in aprons and gaiters walking up and down the precincts of Westminster behind clays and briar-roots . The room is comfortably fitted with writing materials , lounging chairs , and the usual accessories of the smoking room .
Q UEEN CHARLOTTE ' LYING IN HOSPITAL , MARYLEBONE ROAD , N . W . — Christmas Appeal . —This hospital , which w ? s founded in 1752 , and is the largest of its kind in Great Britain , received 1151 patients into the Wards last year and in addition attended 1122 patients at their own homes . The expenditure for the year amounted to £ 43 00 . while the income reached £ 3600 only , thus leaving a deficit of £ 700 . To meet the great pressure on the accommodation of the hospital an extension is being
carried out and a new Nurses Home will shoitly be commenced . For these works upwards of £ -2 , 003 will be needed . The Committee of Management earnestly appeal for contributions to both the Building Fund and the general Maintenance Fund , which may be sent to the bankers , Messrs . Cocks , Biddulph , and Co ., 43 , Charing Cross , S . VV ., or to the Secretary ( Mr . Arthur Watts ) at the hospital . Gifts of clothing for mothers and infants would also be much appreciated .
THE DUCHESS OF BEAUFORT on Monday cut fhe first turf of the new Bristol and South Wales Direct Railway at Chipping Sodbury , in presence of a large gathering oi the public . A special train left Paddington in the morning , conveying Lord Emlyn ( Chairman of the Great Western Railway ) , Bro . the Hon . Evelyn Hubbard ( Deputy Chairman ) , Sir Nigel Kingscote , Bro . the Earl of Cork , Mr . Robinson , Mr . J . T . Allen ( Superintendent ot the Line ) , and numerous other officials . A large marquee had been erected in a meadow , and within it the opening ceremony was performed . A distinguished company , including those through whose lands the railway will run , was
subsequently entertained at luncheon . Lord Emlyn presided , and among those present were Lord Edmond Filzmaurice , Sir Gerald and Lady Codrington , the Duchess of Beaufort , the Marchioness of Worcester , Lady Susan and Lady Clodagh Beresford , Sir Weetman Pearson , M . P . ( the contractor ) , and Lady Pearson . The new line is one of the most important of recent years . Its length will be 33 ! miles from Wootton Bassett , below Swindon , to Patchway , a few miles from the Severn Tunnel . It will entail a saving in distance between Newport and London via Bristol of 11 , and v ' ui Gloucester of 26 miles . The work is expected to cost one million and a quarter sterling , and will be concluded in about three years ,
