D . 1423 , offering himself as a candidate for initiation , that ceremony was rehearsed by the W . M . in a very impressive manner . The lodge was resumed to the Second Degree , and Bro . Dopson , W . M . S 34 , offering himself as a candidate for raising , was examined , and entrusted . The lodge was resumed to the Third

Degree , and the ceremony of raising was rehearsed in such a manner as to call forth the high commendation of the brethren . The W . M . rose for the first time , and Bro . B . De Costa was elected a member . A preposition , made by Bro . W . Williams , and seconded by Bro . Craggs , that any member attending two-fifths of the possible number of attendances during which time the sum of £ } js . was accumulating should be eliigble to participate in the ballot for one of the Subscriberships , was discussed at some length , and supported

by Bro . A . Williams , Sec , and opposed by Bros . Gardner , Treas ., Wood , and Stroud . The rule at present in use—providing that a member shall be eligible for this ballot who attends 20 times during the preceding 13 months , dating back from the day the £$ 5 s . is completed—on being put to the vote , the proposed alteration was duly carried ; and Bro . Gardner thereupon gave notice of motion to rescind that alteration and propose another alteration in its stead . The lodge was then closed .

A cordial vote of thanks

and honorary membership of the lodge were voted to Bro . Watts , and the same were ordered to be recorded on the minutes . Bro . Watts having returned thanks , the ceremony ot initiation was ably rehearsed by the W . M ., with Bro . Esling as candidate . Bros . ' Clarkson , 1604 , and Reed , 1910 , were elected joining members . Votes of thank to Bros . C . H . Phillips , W . M ., and Lafeuliard were

passed . Bros . Johnson , W . Westley , and Andrews were elected Preceptor , Treasurer , and Secretary respectively , and Bros . Esling , Glover , and Partridge a Committee to audit the accounts for the past 13 months . The Secretary having mentioned that the tickets for the annual supper , to take place in the lodge room on Monday , the 28 th inst ., under the presidency of Bro . Westley , were ready , the lodge was closed .

STAR CHAPTER ( No . 1275 ) . —The regular convocation of this chapter was held at the Ship , Greenwich , on Tuesday , the 25 th ult . Comps . Grummant , M . E . Z . ; Hilton , H . ; and Elliot , J ., occupied their respective chairs , and were supported by the other officers and companions of the chapter as well as several visitors . The

companions who had not passed the three Principals' chairs withdrew , and Comp . Grummant installed his successor , Comp . Hilton , into the chair of Z . in an excellent style . Comp . Hilton then proclaimed Comps . Elliot , as H . ; and Addington , as J . The other officers being as follows : Comps . Williams , P . Z ., Treas . ; Capt . C . W . Williams , S . E . ; North , S . N . ; Stone , P . S . ; Henton , ist A . S . ;

and Benedetti , 2 nd A . S . The other companions were then admitted and saluted the three newly-installed Principals . The ballot was then taken and proved unanimous in favour of the following : Bros . Fleck , 172 ; Meierhoff , 172 ; Woods , 1 S 6 9 ; Beare , 172 ; and Martin , 1622 . The first three being present were duly exalted into the mysteries of Royal Arch Masonry in a most impressive manner , the

whole of the officers rendering their work in a manner which reflected great credit upon themselves as well as upon the chapter . Comp . Hilton , M . E . Z ., then presented Comp . Grummant with a P . Z . jewel , in doing which he proposed a vote of thanks to Comp . Grummant for the excellent way in which he had installed his successor into the chair of Z . ; this was duly seconded , and Comp .

Grummant replied , thanking the companions for the jewel and the vote of thanks which took him quite by surprise . He said he should always be ready to do his utmost for the good of the chapter . The M . E . Z . then proposed another candidate for exaltation . Business being ended , the chapter was closed . After the banquet Comp . Hilton , M . E . Z ., proposed "The

Health of the Queen , " in doing which he said that Royal Arch Masons were always loyal , but they had particular Pleasure in drinking the health of her Majesty in this her Jubilee year . Then followed the toast of "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , Grand Z ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " which were enthusiastically received .

Comp . Cowley , P . Z ., in proposing "The Health of Comps . Hilton , M . E . Z . ; Grummant , P . Z ., acting H . ; and Addington , J . ; " said that he was charmed with the way in which the M . E . Z . had performed his work during the evening . It could not have been done better had he done it hundreds of times before to perfect himself .

In reply Comp . Hilton said that he had worked hard under Cnmp . Bumstead , P . Z ., at the chapter of improvement , and if he had given the companions pleasure he was very pleased . He should always do his best to maintain the good name of the chapter . Comps . Grummant , acting H ., and Addington , J ., also replied thanking the

companions . In proposing the "Exaltees" the M . E . Z . said that in a sense this was the most important toast of the evening , for no society could flourish without the introduction of new blood . He hoped he should see each of the exaltees Comps . Fleck , Meierhoff , and Woods , reflect honour

upon R . A . Masonry , and fill the chair he was now occupying . Each of the exaltees replied , and they were unanimously of opinion that to be a R . A . Mason was a very grand thing . They had been very deeply impressed by the ceremony they had passed through that evening , and hoped that they might live to fulfil the hopes of their

M . E . Z . Next followed the toast of "The Visitors , for whom Comps . Vincent and Powell replied . They had been very glad to be present that evening , for if anyone wanted to see good work they should come to the Star Chapter . They had been very well received and he heartily thanked the companions for their hospitality .

The M . E . Z . then proposed the toast of "The Past Principals , " coupling with it the names of Comps . Cowley , Grummant , and Bumstead . Comp . Cowley , P . Z ., in reply , said that he had received great pleasure that evening in seeing Comp . Hilton in the chair of Z . The P . Z . ' s were always ready to do all they could for the chapter . Comp . Grummant , P . Z ., said that he was pleased to be numbered

among the P . Z . ' s of the Star Chapter . He was glad he had given the companions satisfaction in his year of office just past . Comp . Bumstead said that although not a P . Z . of the chapter he was very proud of being an hon . member . He was always glad to welcome and help any companion either at the Pythagorean Chapter of Improvement , Portland Hotel , London-street , Greenwich , or at any other

place . He had been much encouraged by the careful attention of the present officers of the chapter to his instructions , and was pleased to leave Comp . Grummant that evening to do the work of installing his successor without aid from himself . The M . E . Z . spoke in very flattering terms of the way in which the other officers had done their work , particularly

commending Comps . Williams , S . E . ; North , S . N . ; and Stone , P . S ., and expressed great pleasure in proposing their healths . The Treasurer and Scribe E . having been forced to leave previously , Comps . North , S . N . ; Stone , P . S . ; and Benedetti , 2 nd A . S ., replied , thanking the M . E . Z . and companions . They were always glad to do their very best for

the chapter , and were glad to have given satisfaction . The Janitor's toast brought a very pleasant evening to a conclusion . During the evening the companions were very much enchanted by an excellent selection of music , which was carried out under the direction of Bro . Wakefield Reed , who was assisted by Misses F . Venning and R . Sutherland , and Bro . Rushton Odell .

SPHINX CHAPTER ( No . 1329 ) . —The installation meeting of this most flourishing ^ chapter was held at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell , on Saturday , the 22 nd ult . There were present Comps . Z . ; E . A . Whitby , H . ; and Lieut . R . Stokoe , J . The conclave of Installed Principals being closed , the companions were re-admitted , and the M . E . Degree of Royal Arch Masonry , the three Principals maintaining the reputation of the chapter by performing their duties in a most exemplary manner . The M . E . Z ., in the name of the companions , then presented Comp . T . E . Heller , P . Z ., with a handsome jewel , in recognition of his eminent services to the chapter during the past year . Three companions having notified their intention of serving as

Stewards to the Masonic Benevolent Institutions , the Treasurer gave notice that he should propose that five guineas be taken from the funds of the chapter and placed on each companion's list . Comp . J . C . Reynolds having zealously and faithfully filled the office of Treasurer since its consecration , the M . E . Z . gave notice that he should propose that a suitable jewel be presented to Comp . Reynolds as a token of the regard with which he is held by the

companions . Two brethren of the Duke of Albany Lodge were proposed for exaltation at the next convocation . All Royal Arch business beingended , the chapter was closed in due form . The companions afterwards dined together under the genial presidency of the M . E . Z . An excellent programme of music had been provided by Comp . E . J . Day , Organist , and a most pleasant evening was spent .

Botolph ' s Chapter ( No . 272 ) . — The companions of this chapter held their installation meeting at the Masonic Hall , on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., when there was a large attendance . The minutes of the last convocation having been read and confirmed , the ballot was then taken for Comp . Robert Henry Clemow , of 15 S 9 , which being unanimous , he was admitted as a

joining companion . Comp . Thos . Slator , P . Z ., then proceeded to instal the three Principals for the ensuing year , after which the officers were invested—Comps . John Benner , M . E . Z . ; Alfred Harrison , H . ; John Allen , J . ; Thos . Slator , P . Z ., Treas . ; C . A , Kirby , S . E . ; O . Wormal , S . N . j E . Cammack , P . S . ; J . W . Palmer , ist A . S . ; C . R . Morton , 2 nd A . S . ; and Thomas Ward , Janitor .

At the close of the chapter the companions adjourned to the Peacock and Royal Hotel , where a sumptuous banquet , provided by Comp . Clemow ( late of Anderton ' s Hotel ) was partaken of . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given , and a truly enjoyable evening was spent . Too much praise cannot be given to Comp . Ciemow for the admirable manner which he catered for the companions ; the service also was excellent .

HENNIKER LODGE ( No . 315 ) . —A meeting of this successful lodge was held at the Masonic Hall , Red Lion-square , on Tuesday last . In the absence of the W . M ., Bro . Controller S . G . Bake , P . G . S . B ., who was detained in the country , Bro . F . Binckes very kindly officiated as W . M ., and advanced to the Honourable Degree of Mark Master Masons Bros . A . J . Henochsberg , P . M . ;

M . Bromet , and J . Lichtenfeld , all of 205 ; and Bro . Julius Quitmann , P . M . 1969 ; Bros . J . A . Gartley , 144 ; and C . H . Chauffourier , 23 S , were elected joining members . Bro . Col . H . Kadcliffe was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing year , Bro . E . Bowyer , P . M ., was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . E . Mills , Tyler ; and it was unanimously resolved to present Bro . S . G . Bake with the Past

Master ' s jewel of the lodge , in slight recognition of his valuable services as W . M . and his uniform kindness to all the members . A letter was read from Lord Henniker , M . W . P . G . M . M . M ., thanking the lodge for the vote of congratulation passed to him at the last meeting on his appointment as Provincial Grand Master of Suffolk , and was ordered to be entered on the minutes .

Degree , and the ceremony of raising was rehearsed in such a manner as to call forth the high commendation of the brethren . The W . M . rose for the first time , and Bro . B . De Costa was elected a member . A preposition , made by Bro . W . Williams , and seconded by Bro . Craggs , that any member attending two-fifths of the possible number of attendances during which time the sum of £ } js . was accumulating should be eliigble to participate in the ballot for one of the Subscriberships , was discussed at some length , and supported

by Bro . A . Williams , Sec , and opposed by Bros . Gardner , Treas ., Wood , and Stroud . The rule at present in use—providing that a member shall be eligible for this ballot who attends 20 times during the preceding 13 months , dating back from the day the £$ 5 s . is completed—on being put to the vote , the proposed alteration was duly carried ; and Bro . Gardner thereupon gave notice of motion to rescind that alteration and propose another alteration in its stead . The lodge was then closed .

STAR CHAPTER ( No . 1275 ) . —The regular convocation of this chapter was held at the Ship , Greenwich , on Tuesday , the 25 th ult . Comps . Grummant , M . E . Z . ; Hilton , H . ; and Elliot , J ., occupied their respective chairs , and were supported by the other officers and companions of the chapter as well as several visitors . The

companions who had not passed the three Principals' chairs withdrew , and Comp . Grummant installed his successor , Comp . Hilton , into the chair of Z . in an excellent style . Comp . Hilton then proclaimed Comps . Elliot , as H . ; and Addington , as J . The other officers being as follows : Comps . Williams , P . Z ., Treas . ; Capt . C . W . Williams , S . E . ; North , S . N . ; Stone , P . S . ; Henton , ist A . S . ;

and Benedetti , 2 nd A . S . The other companions were then admitted and saluted the three newly-installed Principals . The ballot was then taken and proved unanimous in favour of the following : Bros . Fleck , 172 ; Meierhoff , 172 ; Woods , 1 S 6 9 ; Beare , 172 ; and Martin , 1622 . The first three being present were duly exalted into the mysteries of Royal Arch Masonry in a most impressive manner , the

whole of the officers rendering their work in a manner which reflected great credit upon themselves as well as upon the chapter . Comp . Hilton , M . E . Z ., then presented Comp . Grummant with a P . Z . jewel , in doing which he proposed a vote of thanks to Comp . Grummant for the excellent way in which he had installed his successor into the chair of Z . ; this was duly seconded , and Comp .

Grummant replied , thanking the companions for the jewel and the vote of thanks which took him quite by surprise . He said he should always be ready to do his utmost for the good of the chapter . The M . E . Z . then proposed another candidate for exaltation . Business being ended , the chapter was closed . After the banquet Comp . Hilton , M . E . Z ., proposed "The

Health of the Queen , " in doing which he said that Royal Arch Masons were always loyal , but they had particular Pleasure in drinking the health of her Majesty in this her Jubilee year . Then followed the toast of "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , Grand Z ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " which were enthusiastically received .

Comp . Cowley , P . Z ., in proposing "The Health of Comps . Hilton , M . E . Z . ; Grummant , P . Z ., acting H . ; and Addington , J . ; " said that he was charmed with the way in which the M . E . Z . had performed his work during the evening . It could not have been done better had he done it hundreds of times before to perfect himself .

In reply Comp . Hilton said that he had worked hard under Cnmp . Bumstead , P . Z ., at the chapter of improvement , and if he had given the companions pleasure he was very pleased . He should always do his best to maintain the good name of the chapter . Comps . Grummant , acting H ., and Addington , J ., also replied thanking the

companions . In proposing the "Exaltees" the M . E . Z . said that in a sense this was the most important toast of the evening , for no society could flourish without the introduction of new blood . He hoped he should see each of the exaltees Comps . Fleck , Meierhoff , and Woods , reflect honour

upon R . A . Masonry , and fill the chair he was now occupying . Each of the exaltees replied , and they were unanimously of opinion that to be a R . A . Mason was a very grand thing . They had been very deeply impressed by the ceremony they had passed through that evening , and hoped that they might live to fulfil the hopes of their

M . E . Z . Next followed the toast of "The Visitors , for whom Comps . Vincent and Powell replied . They had been very glad to be present that evening , for if anyone wanted to see good work they should come to the Star Chapter . They had been very well received and he heartily thanked the companions for their hospitality .

The M . E . Z . then proposed the toast of "The Past Principals , " coupling with it the names of Comps . Cowley , Grummant , and Bumstead . Comp . Cowley , P . Z ., in reply , said that he had received great pleasure that evening in seeing Comp . Hilton in the chair of Z . The P . Z . ' s were always ready to do all they could for the chapter . Comp . Grummant , P . Z ., said that he was pleased to be numbered

among the P . Z . ' s of the Star Chapter . He was glad he had given the companions satisfaction in his year of office just past . Comp . Bumstead said that although not a P . Z . of the chapter he was very proud of being an hon . member . He was always glad to welcome and help any companion either at the Pythagorean Chapter of Improvement , Portland Hotel , London-street , Greenwich , or at any other

place . He had been much encouraged by the careful attention of the present officers of the chapter to his instructions , and was pleased to leave Comp . Grummant that evening to do the work of installing his successor without aid from himself . The M . E . Z . spoke in very flattering terms of the way in which the other officers had done their work , particularly

commending Comps . Williams , S . E . ; North , S . N . ; and Stone , P . S ., and expressed great pleasure in proposing their healths . The Treasurer and Scribe E . having been forced to leave previously , Comps . North , S . N . ; Stone , P . S . ; and Benedetti , 2 nd A . S ., replied , thanking the M . E . Z . and companions . They were always glad to do their very best for

the chapter , and were glad to have given satisfaction . The Janitor's toast brought a very pleasant evening to a conclusion . During the evening the companions were very much enchanted by an excellent selection of music , which was carried out under the direction of Bro . Wakefield Reed , who was assisted by Misses F . Venning and R . Sutherland , and Bro . Rushton Odell .

Z ., in the name of the companions , then presented Comp . T . E . Heller , P . Z ., with a handsome jewel , in recognition of his eminent services to the chapter during the past year . Three companions having notified their intention of serving as

Stewards to the Masonic Benevolent Institutions , the Treasurer gave notice that he should propose that five guineas be taken from the funds of the chapter and placed on each companion's list . Comp . J . C . Reynolds having zealously and faithfully filled the office of Treasurer since its consecration , the M . E . Z . gave notice that he should propose that a suitable jewel be presented to Comp . Reynolds as a token of the regard with which he is held by the

companions . Two brethren of the Duke of Albany Lodge were proposed for exaltation at the next convocation . All Royal Arch business beingended , the chapter was closed in due form . The companions afterwards dined together under the genial presidency of the M . E . Z . An excellent programme of music had been provided by Comp . E . J . Day , Organist , and a most pleasant evening was spent .

The minutes of the last convocation having been read and confirmed , the ballot was then taken for Comp . Robert Henry Clemow , of 15 S 9 , which being unanimous , he was admitted as a

joining companion . Comp . Thos . Slator , P . Z ., then proceeded to instal the three Principals for the ensuing year , after which the officers were invested—Comps . John Benner , M . E . At the close of the chapter the companions adjourned to the Peacock and Royal Hotel , where a sumptuous banquet , provided by Comp . Clemow ( late of Anderton ' s Hotel ) was partaken of . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given , and a truly enjoyable evening was spent . Too much praise cannot be given to Comp . Ciemow for the admirable manner which he catered for the companions ; the service also was excellent .
