might feel a little more benevolent than usual , and enable him to take up a substantial sum for that Institution . He thought something should be done to relieve the large number of applicants , and to lessen the number of those who went away empty handed . This was a most deserving cause , and he hoped they would contribute a sum that would redound to the credit of the lodge .

Bro . La Feuillade , W . M ., subsequently announced that the contributions received that evening had enabled him to raise the total of his list to 50 guineas . The Worshipful Master proposed " The Visitors , " and said that among the large number present that evening there were some eminent Masons . There were no Grand Officers in attendance , but there were several distinguished

W . M . 's , P . M . 's , and officers , to all of whom he extended a warm welcome . Several of the visiting brethren were his own friends of many years' standing . He would call upon Bro . Tuson , whom he had known for 20 years , and Bros . Stunt and Johnson . He was indebted to the latter brother for the benefit of his experiences . Bro . H . Tuson , P . M . 20 ,, in returning thanks , said he wished the duty could have fallen into better hands . He

thanked the W . M . for the honour conferred upon him by mentioning his name , and , on behalf of the visitors , thanked the lodge sincerely for the hospitality they had received . He desired to express his appreciation of the manner in which the work had been performed , but assured the brethren that it was only characteristic of the W . M ., for whatever he undertook , he carried out in a highly satisfactory and creditable style . Bro . La Feuillade would prove a credit to the lodge , and the members would not regret their rhnirn .

Bro . W . Stunt , W . M . 1641 , added his testimony to the good working , and said he was aware of the great interest taken by the W . M . in Masonry , and therefore congratulated the lodge on having such a Master . " The Past Masters " was then introduced by the W . M ., who expressed his regret that there were very few P . M . ' s present . That was the only opportunity afforded him of

referring to the I . P . M ., who , he considered , entered office under trying circumstances . The lodge had to move from its home to its present quarters , which must have a detrimental effect . Bro . Plowman had carried out the affairs of their lodge in a very creditable manner , and had faithfully studied its best interests , whilst his kind and genial bearing had won the hearts of the members . He now had the

pleasure of placing on his breast the jewel voted to him m recognition of his efficient services rendered whilst he occupied the chair . Bro . J . Plowman , I . P . M ., after assuring them that he was at present unaccustomed to the novelty of his position , tendered his sincere thanks for this mark of their favour , of which he was very proud , and which he accepted with the

same grace as it was given . In giving "The Treasurer and Secretary , " the W . M . again referred to the abscence of Bro . Everett , 'Ireas ., whose greatest grief , he was sure , was that he could not be with them . Bro . Everett had occupied the position of Treasurer for 12 months , and was a most invaluable officer . They were all aware that he was a most able Mason , and

his general utility was proverbial . Their Secretary was almost like one of the fixed jewels of the lodge , for he had been with them almost since its formation , and performed his duties to the great satisfaction of the brethren . He had to thank him for many kind services rendered , which were quite outside his duties as Secretary . Bro . Stuart , P . M ., Sec , returned thanks , and expressed

his intention of continuing to exert his best endeavours for the welfare of the lodge . "The Officers" having been given , and responded to by Bro . Lingley , S . W ., the Tyler ' s toast brought the proceedings to a close . An excellent programme of music was successfully carried out under the direction of Bro . Grover , Org .

DUKE OF CONNAUGHT LODGE ( No . 1524 ) . —The installation meeting of this prosperous lodge was held on Thursday , the 27 th ult , at Anderton's Hotel , Fleet-street . Amongst the large number of members present were Bros . Arthur Ferrar , W . M . ; Rudolf Polak , S . W ., W . M . elect ; G . Ferrar , J . W . ; W . H . Brand , P . M ., Treas . ; W . H . Lee , P . M ., P . A . G . Sec . Middx ., Sec ;

1679 ; C . Levett , 1507 ; H . Neville , 1320 ; J . Ardenne , 1184 ; R . Pasco , 27 ; D . Moss , P . M . 1275 ; J . Doyle , 1926 ; and W . \ V . Lee , 1 S 97 . The lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes of the last meeting read and confirmed . The report of the Audit Committee was received and adopted , showing asubstantial balance to the credit of the lod ge and benevolent

funds , notwithstanding the heavy demands made upon the latter during the year . Bro . Ellis having been passed to the Second Degree , Bro . W . H . Lee , P . M ., Sec , rose and said he had a painful duty to perform , which was to remind the brethren of the serious loss sustained by the lodge since the last meeting by the sudden death of Bro . Charles W . Smyth , P . M . His unexpected death would be sincerely

regretted by every member of the lodge , for he was highly respected and esteemed b y all who had the good fortune to make his acquaintance . Bro . Smyth , P . M ., had taken a lively interest in the foundation of their lodge , and had continued to exert himself on its behalf up to the time of his melancholy death . He was naturally kind and genial , and was happy in the possession of those

good qualities which make alike the good man and the good Mason , causing him to be beloved by a large circle of _ friends . Many members present had known Bro . Smyth in his happy home as a kind husband and an indulgent father , and the greatest sympathy would be felt for his widow and family in their sad affliction . ( Bro . Lee ) therefore , moved a resolution expressing the regret

of the lodge at the decease of their esteemed brother , and of _ sympathy and condolence with his widow and family in the irreparable loss they had sustained . Bro . Lorkin , P . M ., seconded the resolution , which was carried unanimously , and said he had known Bro . Smyth for many years as a friend and neighbour and as one ever ready to exert his influence in the cause of Charity . The installation ceremony was then proceeded with , and Bro . Rudolf Polak , S . W ., was installed W . Master by Bro .

Arthur Ferrar , I . P . M ., in a very able and efficient manner . The following brethren were appointed and invested as officers for the ensuing year : Bros . G . Ferrar , S . W . ; A . R . Olley , J . W . ; W . H . Brand , P . M ., Treas . ; W . II . Lee , P . M ., Sec ; W . Beasley , S . D . ; J . H . Rich , J . D . ; W . Wright , I . G . ; W . Simpson , Org . ; J . Robinson and E . Winch , Stwds . ; J . T . March , P . M ., Tyler . Bro . A .

Ferrar , the Installing Master , then delivered the usual addresses in an impressive style that suitably closed a very successful year of office . Bro . Polak , W . M ., presented Bro . Farrar , I . P . M ., with a handsome P . M . ' s jewel voted by the lodge , and said that their I . P . M . had performed his work during the year in a highly creditable manner , and it was the unanimous wish of the brethren that he would be

spared for many years to be with them . The circular from Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon , M . W ., ProG . M ., respecting the Jubilee Festival was read , and the proposals it contained approved by the lodge , which was then closed . The brethren then adjourned to a recherche repast , at the conclusion of which the usual loyal and Masonic toasts where honoured .

"The Oueen and the Craft , " "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , MLW . G . M ., " and "The Grand Officers" having been given , and received in the customary hearty manner , Bro . A . Ferrar , I . P . M ., proposed "The W . M ., " and said he was quite sure it would be received with enthusiasm by all present . He regretted that Bro . Polak , W . M ., had not had the opportunity that evening of performing one of

the ceremonies , and thus giving the brethren a proof of his knowledge of the ritual . But their W . M . had performed the various offices he had held in a manner that left no doubt as to his capabilities for the important office to which he had been promoted . He asked them to drink to the health of their W . M ., and wish him a happy and prosperous year of office .

Bro . R . Polak , W . M ., tendered his sincere thanks to the I . P . M . for the kind terms in which he had offered the toast of his health to the brethren , and the brethren for the cordial manner in which they had received it . He would use his best endeavours to satisfactorily perform his duties , and relied upon the officers and members to support and assist him during his term of office .

"The Visitors" was next given by the Worshipful Master , who remarked that that toast was one that was always received with warmth in that and every other lodge , for it was by the brethren visiting other lodges that the feelings of brotherly love and good fellowship were promoted . He hoped that the visitors had enjoyed the working they had seen , and that they appreciated the efforts that

had been made to entertain them at the banquet table . He heartily welcomed the visiting . brethren , and hoped their visits would be repeated . Bro . S . Studd , P . M . 1375 , in responding on behalf of the visitors , said he was sure it must be gratifying to every visiting brother present to find the good working they had witnessed , and also to see the cordiality and good feeling

existing amongst the members . He nad been struck with the great prosperity the lodge seemed to enjoy , but he had been more struck with the brotherly love and good fellowship that was clearly evinced from one to another amongst the members . He also perceived that the lodge possessed a number of young and capable Masons who would do credit to the Craft in years to come . Bro . Polak was particularly

fortunate in being W . M . during the Jubilee year of her Majesty , and the visitors hoped he would have as much prosperity as he desired during his tenure of office . He ( Bro . Studd ) wished to add a word of praise respecting the installation ceremony . He had frequently seen that ceremony performed , and had worked it himself several times , but he had never seen it rendered as he had on the present

occasion . He congratulated the I . P . M . on the wonderful power and impressiveness with which he had carried it out . Bro . J . Doyle , 1926 , also replied , and said that this was the second lodge he had had the privilege of entering in England . He had visited many lodges in different parts of the world , but he must assure them that a lodge more perfectly worked he had never seen . He was happy to have

had the opportunity of visiting them , and could not find words to adequately express his thanks for the very kind reception he had met with . In Malta , where his lodge met , they had nothing to compare with the lodge rooms he had seen in this country , for they were confined to nooks and corners where they might meet without fear of disturbance . Bro . A . Ferrar , I . P . M ., replied for " The Past Masters , "

and on their behalf tendered thanks for the cordiality with which the toast had been given and received . He had been a P . M . for a very short time , but felt it a very great pleato be able to respond for the toast . He assured them that nothing should be wanting on his part to maintain the position of the lodge , and he trusted that the W . M . would have a successful year of office .

In giving " The 1 reasurer and Secretary , " the Worshipful Master said they were two of the mostimportant officers of the lodge . They were fortunate in possessing two such brethren as Bros . Brand and Lee , for all present were aware how ably they managed the affairs of that lodge . It was their hope that those two brethren would retain their offices for many years to come .

Bro . W . H . Brand , P . M ., Treasurer , thanked Bro . Polak , W . M ., for the kind and flattering way in which he had proposed the toast . He had to confess that he was somewhat flattered with the cordial reception with which he was invariably received . He was sorry that the balance shown in the accounts was not quite as large as last year ; but he nevertheless hoped they would progress satisfactorily .

The late Bro . Smyth , who had been recently taken from them , was the founder of the Charity box which they were in the habit of seeing at each meeting , and the contents of which helped to swell the Benevolent Fund . They had been able during the past year to give a brother and his widow five guineas each from that fund , which was a good institution , and it would stand on record as one of the

services rendered by a P . M . of the lodge . Bro . W . H . Lee , P . M ., Secretary , also responded , and thanked the W . M . and brethren for the reception accorded the toast . Of course , as the father of the lodge , it was hardly necessary for him to say what a great interest he took in its welfare . Most of those present who had

anything to do with the working of a lodge would know that the affairs require careful consideration , and if the P . M . 's did not do their best , the lodge would not progress , but would probably run into debt . What therefore the P . M . ' s did they did for the best , and as long as they had the confidence of the members they would continue to exert their influence to promote the best interests of the lodge .

funds , notwithstanding the heavy demands made upon the latter during the year .
