MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will hold their regular meeting at Freemasons' Hall , on Wednesday next , the 9 th inst . The General Committee of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will hold their regular meeting for the current

month at Freemasons' Hall , at 4 p . m . on Saturday , the 5 th inst . The memorial fund for the benefit of the family of the late Chief Inspector AVilliamson of Scotland Yard , which already amounts to £ SSo , will be kept open till the 1 st May next , in the hope thatby that time it may have reached £ 1000 .

The Earl of Rosebery presided at a meeting of the National Liberal Club , held at the Conference Hall , on Monday evening , for the purpose of considering the steps to be taken to erect a permanent memorial of the late Bro . J . F . B . Firth .

On T nday evening , the 28 th ult ., some of the brethren of the Lodge of Perseverance , No . 1 743 , entertained Bro . Louis A . Leins , founder , P . M . and Treasurer , at a complimentary dinner at Anderton's Hotel , as some recognition of his untiring energies in bringing the lodge to its present successful state .

Bro . Lord Mayor Isaacs has received a letter from the Viceroy of India in svhich the latter expresses his readiness to join the Committee of the Napier of Magdala Memorial Fund , and enclosing £ 50 tosvards the purpose of the fund . Bro . Sir Frederick Roberts , V . C ., G . C . B ., the Commanderin-Chief in India , has also joined the Committee and subscribed .

A gentleman , svho refused to disclose his identity , called on the Secretary to Bro Lord Mayor Isaacs , at the Mansion House , on Monday , and having inquired if the tss-o Colliery Funds were still open , handed in £ 400 in bank notes for the Llanerch Relief Fnnd and £ 300 for the Morfa Fund , merely stipulating that his donations should be acknowledged as from " A . C . A . "

The construction of a large seaport , with three basins , near Brussels , has nosv been determined upon . The syndicate in London , presided over by Lord Brassey and Lord Sheffield , has resolved to entrust the svorks to the son ot the engineer of the Forth Bridge and M . Verveiz AVillebrok . The canal from the Scheldt to Brussels is to be deepened to an extent svhich svill permit of vessels of 1000 tons reaching the Belgian capital .

We have much pleasure in announcing that a number of members of the Royal Victoria Lodge , No . 1013 , Liverpool , and others , met together on Saturday , the 22 nd ult ., and presented a handsome gold Treasurer ' s jewel to Bro . S . Chapman , svho has been connected svith Freemasonry

for some 20 years , is a Past Master of Royal A'ictoria Lodge , No . 1013 , and has for some years past been annually elected its Treasurer . Bro . Chapman is very popular in the Craft , and from all sve hear most richly deserves the honour thus done him by his friends .

The roll of the Honourable Artillery Company svas recently forsvarded to Windsor for the purpose of enabling the Queen to affix her signature so that the roll of the Company ' s Sovereigns might be complete , a respectful request to that effect having been conveyed to her Majesty b y Lord Colville of Culross , President of the Company . The roll has since been returned , and svas formally handed over to the Court of Assistants at their head-quarters on Monday , by Lieut .-Col . G . A . Raikes .

Bro . J . B . Mella , of the Greyhound Hotel , Hampton Court , appears to be making great efforts not only to keep up with the times , but to be somesvhat in advance in his arrangements for promoting the comfort of his guests at this svell-knosvn place of resort . Further alterations and

improvements have been carried out during the quiet months , and he is nosv open to receive small or large parties up to 150 for dining in the Grand Saloon—¦ which , by the way , is most delightfully situated , commanding views of the splendid avenue in Bushey Park and the entranct to the Royal Gardens .

At a meeting of the Concord Chapter , No . 394 , held at the Masonic Hall , Southampton , on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., Comp . S . Clarke in the chair , a surprise svas in store for Comp . J . Cole , P . Z ., by the presentation of an exceedingly handsome jesvel of fine gold , subscribed forby members ofthe chapter . The M . E . Z ., in making the presentation , heartily

congratulated the recipient on the high provincial rank he had attained . . The inscription on the jesvel is as follosvs : "Presented to M . E . Comp . Jas . Cole , P . Z ., by the companions of the Chapter of Concord , No . 394 , on his appointment as Prov . Grand J . of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight . 1890 . " Comp . Cole suitably acknowledged the very handsome gift .

The annual supper of the Star Chapter of Instruction , No . 1275 , will take place on Friday , the 18 th inst ., at the Stirling Castle , Cambersvell . When the Siberian Trans-Asiatic railsvay from St _ . Petersburg to Vladivostok and the Pacific is completed , it will be possible to go round the svorld in sixty days . The Duke and Duchess of Leeds and Lady Ada Osborne svi'l join the party visiting Lord and Lady Yarborough at Brocklesby Park , Lincolnshire , on Saturday next .

Bro . Major Clifford Probyn has sent to the Llanerch Colliery Explosion Fund a cheque for £ 93 16 s ., which he collected among the members of the London County Council . On Tuesday last , Bro . AVilliam Thomas Massey , of 93 , Chancery-lane , vvho vvas initiated in the Lodge of True Friendship , No . 160 , on March 4 th , vvas passed to the Second Degree in the same lodge .

It is announced that there will be an election for tsvo annuities in connection vvith the Victoria Jubilee Masonic Annuity Fund , in Dublin , in June . We hope this fund will soon be an exceedingly useful one ancl much enlarged . The Board of Trade have received through the Foreign

Office a silver medal and diploma , awarded by the Spanish Government to Mr . Andresv Hughson , master of the steamship Robert Harrosving , of AVhitby , in recognition of his services in rescuing the cresv of the Spanish vessel Joven A'icenta , svrecked at Cape Gata on the 23 rd June last .

A warrant has just been granted for a nesv lodge to be held at Dore , in the Province of Derbyshire , to be called the Chantrey Lodge , No . 2355 . Bro . AVilliam Boden , P . M . 353 , P . P . J . G . AV . of Derbyshire , is to be the first Master of the lodge , vvhich , of course , takes its name from the famous sculptor , Sir Francis Chantrey .

In aid of the extended scheme of Scottish Masonic benevolence a smoking concert was held on the 28 th ult ., in the Freemasons' Hall , Edinburgh , under the auspices of the Rifle Lodge , No . 405 . There svas a large attendance . The variety and quality of the entertainment svas above the usual average of such concerts . Among those present svere Councillors Crichton and D . M . Dunlop .

Mr . Robert Louis Stevenson , in a letter to a friend , gives the folloss'ing details of his settlement in the island of Samoa : ' - ' I've arranged for the purchase of 400 acres of land within a mile or tsvo of Apia , and I hope to have a house there and to make it a home for myself and svife . It ' s a delightful , place , on a piece of rising ground , with a splendid view of

the country and the sea beyond . Sydney and Auckland are not far off as things go . As a speculation from a business point of viesv , the affair svould be madness . But it svill serve my purpose . Miles away from England or America I certainly shall be , but I shall be secluded , free from visitors , able to please myself , and untroubled by anybody . "

The funeral of Bro . Alexander Conacher , vvho died somewhat suddenly on the 20 th ult ., took place on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., in Doune Cemetery . The deceased vvas a member of Lodge St . James , No . 171 , Doune , and the brethren took part in the funeral . 'They assembled at the lodge , and went in procession to the deceased ' s house ,

where the first portion of the burial service was performed . Thereafter they headed the funeral cortege to the cemetery , where the R . AV . M ., Bro . James A . M'Lean ( in the absence of the lodge Chaplain , Bro . the Rev . George AVilliams ) , concluded the funeral service at the grave . The ceremony ss'as a very impressive one .

Our readers generally , but more particularly those who have had business to transact at the offices of our Boys ' School , will learn svith sincere regret of the death , after a long and painful illness , of Mr . Reilly , ss'ho for about 12 years had been chief clerk to Bro . Binckes . Mr . Reilly svas not a Mason , but he vvas a most efficient and courteous

officer , competent to do svhatever svas required of him , and at all times most ready and anxious to oblige the brethren svho frequented the offices for business purposes . His death took place on AVednesday morning early , after several weeks' enforced absence from his post , and it will take some time ere his successor will succeed in establishing himself as ( irmly as he had done in general favour .

Thc annual meeting of the shareholders of the Freemasons ' Hall Company was held in the lodge room , 79 , Commercialroad , Landport , on the 26 th ult . The Chairman proposed the payment ofa dividend at five per cent , per annum free of income tax . This svas carried , and the proposals for the construction of a large billiard room on the ground floor and other improvements were postponed for a month , pending the inspection of plans and alternative suggestions

by shareholders as to the most effective svay of obtaining the best accommodation svith the space at disposal . Messrs . J . H . Corke , C . C , E . Mansbridge , and W . Gunnell svere re-elected directors , and Messrs . T . Pratt Wills and T . H . Casey , C . A ., svere re-elected auditors . The lodge room , svhich has been re-decorated , presents a very handsome appearance , and svas re-opened on Monday , the 24 th ult ., by the Grand Lodge of the province after its renovation .

THE CRYSTAL PALACE . —The Directors have just issued an outline of the principal arrangements for the summer of 1890 . As the Easter holidays will be over before the prospectus is circulated , no particulars are given of the Good Friday and Easter Monday programmes . 'They svill , however , be on the same colossal scale as in former years . The usual Good Friday Great Sacred Concert will take place in the afternoon , svhen Miss Anna Williams and Miss

Macintyre , Madame Patey , Mr . Henry Piercey , Mr . Watkin Mills , and Signor Foil will sing ; and in the evening selections of sacred music svill be played by the band of the Grenadier Guards . The Easter Monday programme includes a large number of free entertainments , and should attract as many visitors as last Easter Monday , svhen the turnstiles registered the enormous number of 78 , 047 visitors—the third highest on record .

Her Majesty's ship Kingfisher left Zanzibar , on Wednesday , for Mozambique vvith the consul , Colonel Euan Smith . Bro . T . AV . Boord , M . P ., of Bartholomew-close , has been elected vice-president of the Argus Bicycle Club , Greenwich .

The Governors of the Royal Hollosvay College had a meeting at the Institution on Saturday , amongst those present being Bro . Alderman Savory . Mr . J . A . Isaacs , the Lord Mayor's eldest son , has published for private circulation a little volume of poetry , entitled "A New Year Reverie , and other Poems . "

Comp . J . H . Sillitoe , P . G . H . East Lancashire , installed Comps . Walter Vere Stallon , as Z . ; J . Halstead , as H . ; and Hamer , as J . of the Chapter of Wisdom , No . 283 , at Haslingden , on Monday , the 31 st ult . In the Chancery Division on Wednesday , Mr . Justice Stirling granted an injunction applied for by Madame Tussaud and Sons ( Limited ) , to restrain Louis J . Tussaud from registering a company being formed by him under the name " Louis Tussaud ( Limited ) . "

Bro . John Aird , M . P ., has consented to preside at the forthcoming annual festival in aid of the funds of the London Coffee and Eating House Keepers' Benevolent Association . The dinner will take place on Wednesday , May 14 th , at the Holborn Restaurant .

The Elocution Class of the Royal College of Music , under Mr . J . Millard , has been examined by Bro . Henry Irving , svho svas somuch pleased with their progress that he voluntarily presented the class ( a large one ) , vvith stall tickets for the performance of "The Dead Heart , " on Saturday evening .

The Marchioness of Bute has erected a handsome chapel to the memory of the late Lord Howard of Glossop , on the remote island of Canna , in the Hebrides . The chapel , erected at a cost of £ 3000 , is intended for the accommodation of the natives , numbering 90 , svho are engaged in lobster fishing and in keeping their crofts .

A special matinee of " Dr . Bill" svill be given at the Avenue on Monday next ( Bank Holiday ) , arrangements have also been made for the company to appear at Portsmouth on April 9 th ; Brighton , April 24 th ; Reading , April 30 th ; Cambridge , May 6 th ; Ealing , May Sth ; and Crystal Palace , May 13 th . These matinees svill in no svay interfere svith the usual evening performance in London .

The Anglo-American Chapter ss * as consecrated on Monday , at the Holborn Restaurant . Comps . Adolphus Clark , J . J . AVoolley , and Capt . C . Lambert svere installed as the first Principals . Among those present vvas Comp . Consul-General J . C . Nesv , svho svas elected an honorary member , and responded at the banquet to the toast of " The President of the United States . In connection svith the Guild and School of Handicraft in East London , a series of Easter lectures has been arranged for on artistic subjects . The first svill be to-morrosv evening , svhen Mr . Henry Holiday svill lecture on " Looking backsvard . " The others will be on the ioth , 17 th , and 24 th of April , and the ist of May , in the workshop of the School , at 34 , Commercial-street , E .

The first-class armoured battle-ship Trafalgar svas commissioned , on Wednesday , at Portsmouth by Captain Alan B . Thomas , as the flagship of Rear-Admiral Lord Walter Kerr , second in command of the Mediterranean Squadron , svith a complement of 550 officers and men . The Trafalgar svill , according to present arrangements , sail for her destination on the 14 th inst .

Bro . AV . A . Tyssen-Amherst , M . P ., Lord of the Manor of Hackney , is to make the presentation to the Rev . J . B . Podmore on his retirement from St . Michael and All Angels , London Fields , the interesting ceremony being fixed for VVednesday , the 30 th inst . It will be remembered that it was in connection svith the appointment of Mr . Podmore's successor that "Dogberry" strongly criticised the Bishop of London .

On AVednesday evening Bro . A . J . Altman entertained the members of the General Purposes Committee of the Common Council , of svhich he is Chairman , and a number of friends , at a banquet at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgatestreet , the occasion being the presentation of a token of the esteem of the members of the Committee to their past Chairman , Mr . J . C . Bell . Amongst those present svere Bros , the Rt . Hon . the Lord Mayor , Alderman and Sheriff Knill , Alderman Renals , Sir John Monckton , A . Brookman , and others .

On the evening of the 27 th ult . the members of the William Preston Lodge , No . 7 66 , entertained their lady friends at a banquet at the Cannon-street Hotel , under the presidency of Bro . F . G . Barns , the Master of the lodge . This lodge is probably the only one of the many meeting in the Metropolis the members of svhich make a point of

including one or more "ladies' nights" among the regular assemblies of the lodge , and so far they have proved most enjoyable . On this occasion there svere upsvards of 70 present . At the regular meeting of the lodge , held in the afternoon , tsvo ceremonies svere svorked , and tsvo brethren were received as joining members . After the banquet the Master gave the usual loyal and Masonic toasts .

The close of the Monday Popular Concerts reminds one of the long connection svhich Signor Piatti has sustained in relation to them . For more than 30 years the figure of Piatti and his violoncello have been familiar objects at these concerts . Signor Piatti is 68 years old , and , like his confrere , Herr Joachim , commenced the study of music at an early age . He is a native of Bergamo , a small tosvn in

Northern Italy , and came of a musical family . In 1844 he came to London , and at the time svhen Mendelssohn svas giving his celebrated concerts , appeared svith the great maestro . But , not content vvith his reputation as principal 'cello player at the opera , svhen Bro . Sir Michael Costa svas

" master of the situation , " and with his position at the Popular Concerts , Signor Piatti has ventured into the field as a composer . Hispianoforte and ' cello sonata in D minor , Op . 39 , svas composed svhile the distinguished player svas recruiting his health at his charming villa on Lake Como , and has been heard vvith great satisfaction in London .

Bro . Major Clifford Probyn has sent to the Llanerch Colliery Explosion Fund a cheque for £ 93 16 s ., which he collected among the members of the London County Council . On Tuesday last , Bro . A warrant has just been granted for a nesv lodge to be held at Dore , in the Province of Derbyshire , to be called the Chantrey Lodge , No . 2355 . Bro . AVilliam Boden , P . M . 353 , P . P . J . G . AV . of Derbyshire , is to be the first Master of the lodge , vvhich , of course , takes its name from the famous sculptor , Sir Francis Chantrey .

In aid of the extended scheme of Scottish Masonic benevolence a smoking concert was held on the 28 th ult ., in the Freemasons' Hall , Edinburgh , under the auspices of the Rifle Lodge , No . 405 . There svas a large attendance . The variety and quality of the entertainment svas above the usual average of such concerts . Among those present svere Councillors Crichton and D . M . Dunlop .

Mr . Robert Louis Stevenson , in a letter to a friend , gives the folloss'ing details of his settlement in the island of Samoa : ' - ' I've arranged for the purchase of 400 acres of land within a mile or tsvo of Apia , and I hope to have a house there and to make it a home for myself and svife . It ' s a delightful , place , on a piece of rising ground , with a splendid view of

the country and the sea beyond . Sydney and Auckland are not far off as things go . As a speculation from a business point of viesv , the affair svould be madness . But it svill serve my purpose . Miles away from England or America I certainly shall be , but I shall be secluded , free from visitors , able to please myself , and untroubled by anybody . "

The funeral of Bro . Alexander Conacher , vvho died somewhat suddenly on the 20 th ult ., took place on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., in Doune Cemetery . The deceased vvas a member of Lodge St . James , No . 171 , Doune , and the brethren took part in the funeral . 'They assembled at the lodge , and went in procession to the deceased ' s house ,

where the first portion of the burial service was performed . Thereafter they headed the funeral cortege to the cemetery , where the R . AV . M ., Bro . James A . M'Lean ( in the absence of the lodge Chaplain , Bro . the Rev . George AVilliams ) , concluded the funeral service at the grave . The ceremony ss'as a very impressive one .

Our readers generally , but more particularly those who have had business to transact at the offices of our Boys ' School , will learn svith sincere regret of the death , after a long and painful illness , of Mr . Reilly , ss'ho for about 12 years had been chief clerk to Bro . Binckes . Mr . Reilly svas not a Mason , but he vvas a most efficient and courteous

officer , competent to do svhatever svas required of him , and at all times most ready and anxious to oblige the brethren svho frequented the offices for business purposes . His death took place on AVednesday morning early , after several weeks' enforced absence from his post , and it will take some time ere his successor will succeed in establishing himself as ( irmly as he had done in general favour .

Thc annual meeting of the shareholders of the Freemasons ' Hall Company was held in the lodge room , 79 , Commercialroad , Landport , on the 26 th ult . The Chairman proposed the payment ofa dividend at five per cent , per annum free of income tax . This svas carried , and the proposals for the construction of a large billiard room on the ground floor and other improvements were postponed for a month , pending the inspection of plans and alternative suggestions

by shareholders as to the most effective svay of obtaining the best accommodation svith the space at disposal . Messrs . J . H . Corke , C . C , E . Mansbridge , and W . Gunnell svere re-elected directors , and Messrs . T . Pratt Wills and T . H . Casey , C . A ., svere re-elected auditors . The lodge room , svhich has been re-decorated , presents a very handsome appearance , and svas re-opened on Monday , the 24 th ult ., by the Grand Lodge of the province after its renovation .

THE CRYSTAL PALACE . —The Directors have just issued an outline of the principal arrangements for the summer of 1890 . As the Easter holidays will be over before the prospectus is circulated , no particulars are given of the Good Friday and Easter Monday programmes . 'They svill , however , be on the same colossal scale as in former years . The usual Good Friday Great Sacred Concert will take place in the afternoon , svhen Miss Anna Williams and Miss

Macintyre , Madame Patey , Mr . Henry Piercey , Mr . Watkin Mills , and Signor Foil will sing ; and in the evening selections of sacred music svill be played by the band of the Grenadier Guards . The Easter Monday programme includes a large number of free entertainments , and should attract as many visitors as last Easter Monday , svhen the turnstiles registered the enormous number of 78 , 047 visitors—the third highest on record .

The Governors of the Royal Hollosvay College had a meeting at the Institution on Saturday , amongst those present being Bro . Alderman Savory . Mr . J . A . Isaacs , the Lord Mayor's eldest son , has published for private circulation a little volume of poetry , entitled "A New Year Reverie , and other Poems . "

Comp . J . H . Sillitoe , P . G . H . East Lancashire , installed Comps . Walter Vere Stallon , as Z . ; J . Halstead , as H . ; and Hamer , as J . of the Chapter of Wisdom , No . 283 , at Haslingden , on Monday , the 31 st ult . In the Chancery Division on Wednesday , Mr . Justice Stirling granted an injunction applied for by Madame Tussaud and Sons ( Limited ) , to restrain Louis J . The Marchioness of Bute has erected a handsome chapel to the memory of the late Lord Howard of Glossop , on the remote island of Canna , in the Hebrides . The chapel , erected at a cost of £ 3000 , is intended for the accommodation of the natives , numbering 90 , svho are engaged in lobster fishing and in keeping their crofts .

A special matinee of " Dr . Bill" svill be given at the Avenue on Monday next ( Bank Holiday ) , arrangements have also been made for the company to appear at Portsmouth on April 9 th ; Brighton , April 24 th ; Reading , April 30 th ; Cambridge , May 6 th ; Ealing , May Sth ; and Crystal Palace , May 13 th . These matinees svill in no svay interfere svith the usual evening performance in London .

The first-class armoured battle-ship Trafalgar svas commissioned , on Wednesday , at Portsmouth by Captain Alan B . Thomas , as the flagship of Rear-Admiral Lord Walter Kerr , second in command of the Mediterranean Squadron , svith a complement of 550 officers and men . The Trafalgar svill , according to present arrangements , sail for her destination on the 14 th inst .

Bro . AV . A . Tyssen-Amherst , M . P ., Lord of the Manor of Hackney , is to make the presentation to the Rev . J . B . Podmore on his retirement from St . Michael and All Angels , London Fields , the interesting ceremony being fixed for VVednesday , the 30 th inst . It will be remembered that it was in connection svith the appointment of Mr . Podmore's successor that "Dogberry" strongly criticised the Bishop of London .

On AVednesday evening Bro . A . J . Altman entertained the members of the General Purposes Committee of the Common Council , of svhich he is Chairman , and a number of friends , at a banquet at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgatestreet , the occasion being the presentation of a token of the esteem of the members of the Committee to their past Chairman , Mr . J . C . Bell . Amongst those present svere Bros , the Rt . Hon . the Lord Mayor , Alderman and Sheriff Knill , Alderman Renals , Sir John Monckton , A . Brookman , and others .

On the evening of the 27 th ult . the members of the William Preston Lodge , No . 7 66 , entertained their lady friends at a banquet at the Cannon-street Hotel , under the presidency of Bro . F . G . Barns , the Master of the lodge . This lodge is probably the only one of the many meeting in the Metropolis the members of svhich make a point of

including one or more "ladies' nights" among the regular assemblies of the lodge , and so far they have proved most enjoyable . On this occasion there svere upsvards of 70 present . At the regular meeting of the lodge , held in the afternoon , tsvo ceremonies svere svorked , and tsvo brethren were received as joining members . After the banquet the Master gave the usual loyal and Masonic toasts .

The close of the Monday Popular Concerts reminds one of the long connection svhich Signor Piatti has sustained in relation to them . For more than 30 years the figure of Piatti and his violoncello have been familiar objects at these concerts . Signor Piatti is 68 years old , and , like his confrere , Herr Joachim , commenced the study of music at an early age . He is a native of Bergamo , a small tosvn in

Northern Italy , and came of a musical family . In 1844 he came to London , and at the time svhen Mendelssohn svas giving his celebrated concerts , appeared svith the great maestro . But , not content vvith his reputation as principal 'cello player at the opera , svhen Bro . Sir Michael Costa svas

" master of the situation , " and with his position at the Popular Concerts , Signor Piatti has ventured into the field as a composer . Hispianoforte and ' cello sonata in D minor , Op . 39 , svas composed svhile the distinguished player svas recruiting his health at his charming villa on Lake Como , and has been heard vvith great satisfaction in London .
