Craft Masonry.

orethren , knosvn the W . M . and his dear wife , vvho presides over the domestic affairs of his family with so much grace and kindness , under exceptional circumstances . I met them at London Bridge Station on November 6 th , 1 S 77 , en route from Mrs . Bowman ' s home in Norfolk to Brighton for the honeymoon . One would have thought I should be a bore on such an occasion , and my presence an intrusion ;

but I did not have the cold shoulder , or svas I shunted off as unsvelcome . I begged Mrs . Bosvman to come to me on the first occasion that the W . M . ill-used or ill-treated her , but as nearly 13 years has passed since then and several olive branches have sprung up to bless them and as pledges of mutual love , and I have constantly seen Mrs . Bosvman since , I firmly believe that he

has , during his svedded life , behaved vvith that strict propriety vvhich has been the spirit of his Masonic life . May they long be spared to each other and their dear children , and our W . M . to the brethren of the Caledonian Lodge , to whom I am sure he has the warmest attachment . Ladies and brethren , I give you an upstanding toast , the health of our W . M ., Bro . Arthur Bosvman , and his svife .

The Worshipful Master : Ladies and Brethren , —It is svith the greatest pleasure I rise to thank my dear friend and Bro . Glanville for the exceedingly kind manner in svhich he has expressed himself tosvards my clear svife and myself , and it is svith sincere gratitude I tender my thanks to all the brethren for the very kind manner in svhich they have received the toast . Believe me , brethren , I feel especially honoured

by having the presence of so many ladies upon this most important occasion . I believe I am correct in saying that this is the first time in the history of the Caledonian Lodge ( vvhich datesbacksome i 3 oyears ) that any of its W . M . ' shave enjoyed the same privilege as I do on the present occasion . And nosv that I have this honoured opportunity I svill try and explain some part of Freemasonry , of vvhich , perhaps ,

some present have not yet heard . Pray do not be alarmed , ladies , I am not going to tell you any of its particular secrets , for it is no use of my denying sve have sccrets vvhich vve cannot share vvith you . It appears to me that our ancient brethren in their wisdom evidently considered that ladies in those days could not be entrusted vvith secrets ; they doubted their ability to keep them . Of course I am not

ungallant enough to say that such a reason vvould stand good in the present time , but in this respect the laws of Freemasonry are like those of the Medes and Persians unalterable ; but , ladies , in order to remove any doubt from your minds , I can assure you that those secrets are of such a nature that they cannot injure anyone , but , on the contrary , exist only for good , and any man vvho lives up to

the principles of Freemasonry must be a good and true man . I knosv it is the opinion of the outside svorld , svho know nothing of our Craft , that we exist only for the purpose of eating and drinking ; well , sve do enjoy ourselves at times , and vve have * a double enjoyment this evening , having the ladies present , and I trust they have enjoyed themselves also . Ladies and brethren , I shall try and show

you that something nobler than mere enjoyment is the keystone of Masonry . The principal rock on svhich our secrets rest is Charity . I vvould ask you to take into consideration those noble Institutions vvhich are supported by Masons . One noble Institution is for aged Masons and widosvs of Masons . This Institution vvas founded in 1 S 42 , and during its existence 730 aged Masons have been relieved with

annuities at the rate of £ 40 per year each as long as they live . After the last election , there were 1 S 0 annuitants on the list receiving £ 40 a year , making a yearly total of £ 7200 . Another branch of this Institution is the Widosv ' s Fund . After the last election , there were 230 widows receiving £ 32 a year each—some of them are at the home of the Institution—the total amount paid to widows for the

year being . 4 , 7300 , to vvhich add , 5 , 7200 , paid to aged Masons , brings the amount paid for relief during the year up to £ 14 , 560 . Ladies , I will again ask you to take into consideration this grand and noble Institution for the old and infirm , vvho , svhen the winter of life comes upon them , and they have not strength to work for themselves or friends vvho can assist them , they find themselves alone and

helpless , vvith no prospect before them but that of ending their days in a workhouse . It is then this beautiful rock of Charity shows itself . Instead of such an ending of life as that , they are taken by the hand , cared for , and supported in comfort and respectability . I feel sure , ladies , you svill agree with me this is a grand object for a secret Society to have in view . Then again , sve have those noble Institutions

for the relief of orphan boys and girls . The Boys' Institution since 179 S has maintained , clothed , and educated 1905 sons of Freemasons , of svhich number 263 are nosv being benefited- and are under its care . The Institution at Wood Green cost ( including amounts expended thereon from 1 S 73 to 1 SS 7 ) £ 66 , 198 gs . 6 d . In addition to this , £ 9013 ios . has been expended

in the purchase of land , & c , in connection vvith the Institution . Another sum of £ 19 , 438 15 s . has been spent on Preparatory School Buildings , and the whole making the grand total costof the estate £ 94 , 650 15 s . At the Cambridge Local Examination December , iSSS , 19 candidates svere sent up , 14 passed , 6 svith honors and 8 satisfied the examiners at the College of Preceptors in June , 188 S , 12 passed and no failures ; and at Christmas , iSSS , 15 passed and only 2 failed .

These returns speak volumes as to the care taken in the education of the boys . The Institution for Girls svas instituted on the 25 th March , 17 SS , and since its formation 1591 girls have been educated , clothed , and maintained svithin its svalls . The Centenarv Festival svas celebrated in the Royal Albert Hall , on the 7 th June , iSSS . The amount collected on that occasion resulted in a

list amounting to £ 51 , 500 . At the last Cambridge Local Examination 18 girls competed , all of svhom passed , ten svith honors and five distinguished in religious knosvledge . There are nosv 26 4 girls receiving the benefits of the Institution . What a help and comfort it must be for the poor mother svho is suddenly deprived of her husband ' s support and finds herself a svidosv and helpless , hosv much her troubles and

sorrows are increased vvhen she looks at that bright boy or that intelligent and beautiful girl vvho have alsvays been the joy and pride of her heart , svhat a feeling of despair is hers vvhen she considers that upon her rests the sole responsibility of keeping and educating those children so as to fit them for the hard battle of life , but svhat a relief it must be to her

when this beautiful rock of Charity extends its hands and takes care of them , and educates them equal to that of the sons and daughters in more affluent circumstances . I vvould beg of you , ladies , to use your influence on our behalf ^ If at any time you hear people , vvho can knosv nothing about us , speak slightingly of Freemasons , to remember the few facts I have placed before you . If you do

this I am certain you will feel that , although sve are a secret Society , sve have done great good , and deserve the best wishes of all honest and kind-hearted men and women . Ladies and brethren , before I sit dosvn let me again refer to the exceedingly kind expressions svhich have fallen from my dear friend and brother's lips , Bro . Glanville , and also allosv me , on behalf of my svife and myself , to express our deepest and heartfelt thanks to you all .

The all-important toast of "The Ladies" fell to Bro . Eldridge Johnson , P . M ., vvho attempted , and not in vain , to prove to those present the value of Masonry , having its good deeds from the long past to the present , and imbued all svith the grand fact that svhilst the oldest Institution in the svorld it still remained the best . The several toasts svere interspersed svith music and songs , in svhich Miss Alice AVard ( svho appears next sveek at the Albert Hall ) ancl Miss Collins took a prominent part .

Ferres vvas raised to the Third Degree in

an able manner by the W . M ., after which Bro . Flosver svas passed to the Second Degree by Bro . Vickers , P . M ., Treas . The W . M . again resumed the chair , and impressively installed his successor , Bro . Charles Fruen , as the Master for the ensuing year . The follosving brethren were selected and invested as officers : Bros . G . H . Morgan , S . W . ; Jas . Bolding , J . W . ; Hy . E . Vickers , P . M ., Treas . ;

Thos . Poore , P . M ., Sec . ; W . H . Vickers , S . D . ; W . H . Beaumont , J . D . ; H . Muscall , I . G . ; Richard Barham , D . C . ; A . J . Crofts , A . D . C . ; Caleb Morrish , Org . ; T . VV . A . Ferres and Frank Flosver , Stsvds . ; and T . Bosvler , Tyler . The Installing Master , Bro . E . Pettit , I . P . M ., delivered thc customary addresses to the VV . M ., Wardens , and members . The resignation of Bro . Lindsay svas

announced , and a brother of the nesvly-installed AV . M . svas proposed for initiation . A handsome Past Master ' s jesvel svas presented by the VV . M . to Bro . Pettit , I . P . M ., who suitably acknosvledged the gift . - Lodge vvas closed , and the brethren partook of a recherche repast , vvhich reflected great credit on the establishment .

After the preliminary toasts had been disposed of , Bro . Pettit , I . P . M ., proposed " The Health of the AV . Master , " and said that the members of the lodge had noticed Bro . Fruen's working in the various offices he had filled , and knew him to be ambitious to aspire to the high position of the chair . They vvould therefore one and all congratulate Bro . Fruen on having been installed that

evening . He had known their W . M . some five or six years , and svas certain he svas conscientious and straightforsvard , and svould svorthily uphold his position in every svay . As far as the reputation of the Stuart Lodge svas concerned during the forthcoming year , they had no tsvo opinions . Bro . Fruen had closely follosved him in their progress to the

chair , and the brethren svere fully convinced he svould fill his present office svith the greatest credit possible to the lodge and the Craft , and svith every degree of satisfaction to the members . Bro . Charles Fruen , VV . M ., in returning thanks , assured the brethren that that svas a proud moment in his life . He was initiated some nine years ago in the lodge , had seen it

in its difficulties , and nosv sasv it in svhat he considered its brightest days . 'They had made grand progress in the lodge , and he hoped it svould alsvays continue . As far as he had seen it , there had alsvays been brotherly love and true Masonic feeling existing in the lodge , and their present position scarcely shosved svhat they svere in Masonry . The members having elected him as VV . M . of their lodge , he

could assure them it svould lose none of its lustre by his attempt to fill the chair to their satisfaction . He hoped the attempt svould result in credit to the Craft and honour to himself . In conclusion , he again thanked them for electing him to the honourable position . " Bro . VV . S . Dunkley , P . P . G . P . Middx ., replying for "The Visitors , " said if those brethren felt as delighted as

he did , they must indeed be pleased . That svas the second time he had had the extreme pleasure of attending that lodge , and he could only say that if it progressed in the future as it had done since his last visit , he should be unable to respond in adequate terms . There svas no lodge he had visited where the visitors had been received svith so much hearty cordiality and hospitality as there . It vvas gratifying

to find so pleasant a feeling pervading all the brethren , and he thanked them sincerely for the enjoyable evening he had spent . Bro . Powell , P . P . G . Supt . of Wks . Mon ., said he did not feel at all like a visitor , liaving knosvn the W . M . for 15 years . He svished the VV . M . a successful year of ofiice and the lodge every success .

Bro . Davies , W . M . elect 1901 , also replied , and after returning thanks , slid he could see from the able manner in which the AV . M . invested his officers , and from the knowledge displayed by those officers , that the lodge had a bright prospect and a great future before it . The AV . M . next gave "The Installing and I . P . Master , " and said that Bro . Pettit , I . P . M ., vvas an earnest and

hard svorking Mason svho tried to promote the interests of that iodge and of Masonry in general . The I . P . M . had taken a great interest in the ritual and in the welfare and promotion of the Stuart Lodge , and to him and others the members had to be thankful for the position they were in . Bro . Edsvard Pettit , I . P . M ., in response , said the proudest moment for a Past Master vvas to respond to that

toast svhen he left the chair svith any amount of success . He vvas initiated into Freemasonry in 1 S 85 at the instigation of their most esteemed P . M ., Bro . Bannister . From that time he took almost every ofiice except S . AV ., and it svas his proud privilege to be elected from J . AV . to fill the chair of K . S . He held an enviable position as I . P . M . of their Iodge , and very pleased he vvas to hold it . He might say that he never experienced anything like unanimity , good

will , and kindly feeling and affection more prominently existing in any community than there had been in their lodge . It svas truly a lodge of brotherly love and affection , for from the highest to the losvest they had ] had that one principle in viesv , and he trusted it might ever characterise them as men and Masons . He retired from the chair feeling sure he had the good svill of every member , and trusted his successor svould command the confidence of the brethren .

He thanked them for the heartiness svith svhich he had been received , and also for the handsome jesvel svhich he should be pleased to wear as a reminder of his year of office . "The Masonic Institutions" having been given , and responded to by Bro . VV . W . Lee , The Worshipful Master proposed "The Past Masters , " and alluded to the excellent services rendered by that body to the lodge . Several Past Masters returned thanks , and " The

Treasurer and Secretary" and "The Officers" svere cordially given , and duly acknosvledged . The 'T yler ' s toast then closed the proceedings . An excellent programme of music svas arranged by Bro .

Bannister , P . M ., and carried out by Bros . Vickers , P . M . ; W . C . Beaumont , A . W . Lane , J . Bolding , H . R . Hobbs , and W . Rogers . Bro . Louis Lee , A . R . A . M ., presided at the pianoforte vvith his usual brilliancy , and delighted the brethren by rendering a solo of his osvn composition" Theme Militaire . "

The lodge svas opened , and the minutes read and

confirmed . The ballot vvas taken for a W . M . for the ensuing year , and Bro . Frank Manby svas unanimously elected . 'The election was also taken for Treasurer , Tyler , and the Audit Committee . Bro . Louis Hirsch svas proposed for Treasurer , and svas again elected to the position svhich he has so ably filled since the formation of the lodge , Bro . Bosvler svas elected to the post of Tyler , and Bros . Gabriel ,

A . C . Goodinge , and Dale to the Audit Committee . Bro . Louis Hirsch moved , and Bro . Hosvard Smith seconded , "That a Past Master ' s jesvel be presented to Bro . J . W . Goodinge , W . M ., as a token of appreciation from the Iodge for the very excellent manner in svhich he had performed the duties of his office during the year . " The resolution svas carried unanimously . Bro . S . G . Budd svas impressively

raised by the W . M ., assisted by Bros . G . T . Goodinge and Louis Hirsch . The Iodge svas then closed , and the members adjourned to the Princes Saloon , svhere an excellent dinner svas served . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts svere duly honoured . Bro . Henry Garrod , P . M ., P . G . P ., responded for " The Grand Officers , " and Bros . Guimarens and Ansted on behalf

of "The Visitors . '' During the evening the Treasurer , Bro . Louis Hirsch , in the name of the members of the lodge , presented a very handsome marble clock and vase , to Bro . Hosvard Smith on the occasion of his marriage , as a mark of great esteem and brotherly love , wishing him health , prosperity , and

every happiness in the future . Bro . Hosvard Smith gracefully responded to the compliment paid him . The toast of "The Officers" svas responded to by Bro . F . Manby , S . W . ( W . M . elect ); J . Liscombe , J . W . ; and A . C . Goodinge , I . G . The Tyler ' s toast closed a very pleasant evening .

helpless , vvith no prospect before them but that of ending their days in a workhouse .

If you do

Craft Masonry.

this I am certain you will feel that , although sve are a secret Society , sve have done great good , and deserve the best wishes of all honest and kind-hearted men and women .

VV .

Craft Masonry.

in its difficulties , and nosv sasv it in svhat he considered its brightest days .
