his lodge and how great an honour he felt that in a lodge where his father and grandfather had done good service , he should have the distinguished patronage of presiding over it on the occasion of holding its sesqui-centennial or ijoth anniversary in July next , and said he was pleased again to visit a town where the only older Provincial Lodge than his own was held , viz ., that of the Anchor and Hupe , No . 37 ,

under the mastership of Bro . Brockbank . " The Masonic Charities " were duly honoured , and Bro . Brockbank stated that in addition to the qualification of the W . M . as Life Governor of both schools , Bro . Heywood had completed his qualification to wear the Charity medal by subscription of £ 10 10 s ., to the Girls' School , and another brother promised a ^ donation of £ 5 5 s ., to one or

other of the Chanties to be hereafter selected , and that five of the seven Past Masters of the lodge were entitled to wear the distinction , and the other two were Life Governors of one of the Institutions—everyone of those brethren having contributed more or less to the funds of charity , in addition to which there were nine other brethren who were Life Governors of one or more of the three Institutions as well

the local fund in East Lancashire , and the officers of the lodge were duly honoured and responded to . "The Sister Lodges in Bolton" were proposed and replied to by various representatives who expressed their great pleasure in witnessing the steady growth and prosperity of the youngest addition to the Bolton fold . The last toast , "AH Poor and Distressed Masons " was given

from the chair and the proceedings terminated . The following brethren constituted the St . George ' s choir , Bros . j . W . Taylor , T . E . Smith , Cheesewright , Bentley , and Collins , and the whole arrangements for banquet and lodge musical arrangements were under the able and experienced direction of Bro . J . VV . Taylor , P . P . The following songs and glees were given by members of the choir and other brethren , and the proceedings throughout were of the most harmonious character , and it may be said the whole of the programme was carried out without a single hitch . W . in the absence of Bro . Birt , proposed that the sum of £ 10 10 s . be voted to the W . M . ' s list for the Boys ' School ; seconded by Bro . Kentish , and carried

unanimously . Bro . Bright , S . D ., proposed that a P . M . ' s jewel be presented to the W . M . on the expiration of his year of office ; seconded by Bro . Barnes and carried unanimously . Ihe Treasurer proposed that the value of the jewel in question be £ 10 10 s . as a special mark of the appreciation on the part of the lodge of the W . M . ' s services in founding the lodge and in occupying the chair as first VV . M . The lodire was then closed .

LOUGHBOROUGH LODGE ( No . 22 ) . —At the weekly meeting , held at the Cambria Tavern , Cambriaroad , Loughborough , S . E ., on Wednesday evening last , Bro . James Stevens , P . M ., P . Z ,, & c , paid his long promised visit to this flourishing lodge , and gave his lecture on the First Degree . Amongst the members present we noticed Bros . J . R . Bra . J ames Stevens proceeded with his lecture , which was listened to with marked attention by the brethren , and as time did not permit of it being concluded , Bro . Stevens consented to attend at an early date at the request of the brethren to deliver the second portion of the lecture . Three joining members were elected , and an unanimous vote of thanks was passed to Bro . Stevens for that part of his

interesting lecture he had delivered , and as a small token of respect he was elected an honorary member of the lodge , which he , in reply to the vote , accepted in the fraternal spirit of the intentions of the brethren . The lodjje was then closed in ancient form , and it was the unanimously expressed views of the brethren present that they had received considerable instruction from what Bro . Stevens had so kindly imparted to them in his lecture .

confirmed . Bro . Sheppard having offered himself acandidate , was examined and entrusted . The lodge was opened in the Second Degree and the ceremony of passing rehearsed . Francis , proceeded to rehearse the installation ceremony ( omitting that portion relating to the Board of Installed Masters ) . Bro . S . Richardson having assumed the chair of K . S ., the officers of the evening , as above , were all duly invested , and the remainder of the ceremony was proceeded with and

concluded . The lodge being closed to the First Degree a hearty vote of thanks was unanimously passed to Bro . Francis for the admirable manner in which he had worked the ceremonies that evening , to the great pleasure and profit of the brethren . The resolution was ordered to be inserted on the minutes . Bro . Francis thanked the lodge for their kind vote , which was a sufficient reward for his labours

that evening . Bro . Q . VV . Knight rendered efficient service as Director of Ceremonies , also Bro . H . M . WUIiams , as Organist , who gave the musical portions with great taste and effect , which added much to the completeness of the ceremonial . Bro . H . Baldwin having been elected W . M . fos the ensuing week , he briefly returned thanks , and

expressed the hope that the brethren would loyally support him at their next meeting by their presence and assistance . Bro . S . Richardson was unanimously electeda member , and returned thanks . The usual routine business being duly completed , and " Hearty good wishes" expressed by the brethren , lodge was closed in due form and adjourned in perfect harmony .

MARQUIS OF RIPON LODGE ( No . 1489 ) —A meeting of this lodge was held on Monday , the 30 th ult ., at Pembury Tavern , Amhurst-road , Hackney . There were present Bros . Hunt , W . After the lodge of instruction was closed the monthly meeting of the Brixton Lodge of Instruction Benevolent Association was held , Bro . Francis , the President , being in the chair . The Secretary , Bro . Hooper , read the minutes of the previous meeting ot the association , which were confirmed . The Treasurer , Bro . S . Richardson , announcing that he had over £ \ o 10 s . in hand , it was resolved that there should be two ballots of A 5 5 s . each , in accordance

with the rules . Bro . Harling , P . M ., and Miss Hammond proved to be the fortunate recipients . The Society now numbers 4 S members , who pay a subscription of is . per week . Twenty-live guineas have already been paid over to the Masonic Charities in less than two months ; this augurs well for the success of the Society in the future , and our Masonic Charities will benefit accordingly . Members are admitted any week after the instruction lodge is closed

and at the monthly meeting- on the first Tuesday in each month . Ballots are taken as funds allow ; but there will always be one or two each monthly meeting , and very shortly it is hoped even more . A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the proceedings at a somewhat late hour . However , the excellent character of the evening ' s work ( Masonry and Masonic work ) must be taken as ° a sufficient excuse ; yet if a further reason is required , let us remember " Charity covers a multitude of sins . "

After partaking of an excellent banquet , served by Bro . Moulder in the hall . ltheusualloyal and Arch Masonic toasts were proposed by the M . E . Z . STS ? V P » f ' - " ^ n proposed "The Health of the M . E . Z . and congratulated him upon introducing two members of his family in the persons of his son-in-law , Comp . Richardson , and his own son into the chapter , both of whom he trusted

would live to occupy the position their father did so well . It would be needless for him to say one word about the splendid working of their M . E Z I hey had witnessed it , and were , he felt sure , proud ' of having such a first principal . He asked them to drink the toast in bumpers . Comp . Lloyd was exceedingly pleased to hear that they

appreciated his working , and he took it by their endorsing the kind remarks of Comp . Hayes that he had given them satisfaction . With reference to his son , he must say that lie was pleased to have the opportunity of exalting him into Royal Arch Masonry , as he had initiated him into Craft Masonry , and hoped , and indeed believed , he would be a credit to both institutions . He alivays believed that had

Masonry a tendency to make a good man even better , and , therefore , anxiously wishing to do good for his . family , felt that in introducing the eligible members of it into the Order , he was doing that which would make them good and worthy members of society , good Masons , and good men . The toast of "The Visitors" followed , and Comp . Godwin referred to the unusual kindness extended by the Pattison Chapter to its visitors . It gave him additional pleasure because of the

splendid working he always saw in that chapter . Its solemn completeness always affected him , and he felt , and indeed realised , while listening to it in the Pattison Chapter all the seriousness of Masonry in its highest and most beneficent attributes . It was and had always been a matter of surprise to him that so many Master Masons should go on their way through life without taking the Royal Arch . He meant that to refer chiefly to England ; it was not so on the continent , or in the colonics-
