The lodge was opened , and the Prov . Grand Officers then formed a procession , and the Prov . Grand Master having entered thelodge , was saluted by the brethren . The minutes were read and confirmed , after which the VV . M . requested the P . G . M . to take the chair , which position he gracefully declined . The Audit Committee was elected , and a candidate for initiation having been proposed , a vote of thanks to Bro . Lord Brooke for attending was
unanimously carried and ordered to be entered on the minutes . After " Hearty good wishes " the lodge was closed . The brethren adjourned to the Saracen ' s Head Hotel to the banquet , which was admirably served by Bro . C Bint after which the W . M . proposed "The Oueen and the Craft , " "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , MTW . G M •the Pro G . M ., the D . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present ane ? Past . " '
Bro . Railing responded , and said it was a great honour to respond for so august a body , and that he was plea-ed there were now no less than three or four Essex brethren who had been honoured by the much coveted honourof the purple . TJ-e Worshipful Master , in Proposing "The Prov . G . M ., said whenhe had the honour of proposin-r that
toast for the first time some seven or ei ght months ago he could not have done so with more pleasure than on the present occasion , as since then he had had the pleasure of meeting Bro , Lord Brooke , with the result that he was there that night to reply for himself , and redeem his promise to him to attend . Bro . Lord Brooke was better known to them all personally than to himself , and it would be
quite superfluous on his part to add a word as to his well known general character . When he joined his name with that of his illustrious consort , she who was beloved by them all , a perfect diadem in a noble crown , who in her high , exalted career did not consider it beneath her dignity to comfort and solace the poor , whose amiabilit y and princess-like manner had endeared her to them all , he felt sure

they would agree with him that he should be lacking in good taste unless he alluded to her on that auspicious occasion . He believed that the regard and personal respect they had for their R . W . P . G . M . was such in their county that was felt for their Royal Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales . If Lord Brooke should ever be placed in high office of a public nature , he might be cheered with
the consolation that the powerful influence of Freemasonry would always be at his back , and when history recorded her indelible page , may there be written in bold letters the character and noble deeds of our R . W . Bro . Lord Broke , the future Earl of Warwick . The W . M . concluded by asking the R . W . brother not merely to accept the summonses which were posted to him for all their meetings as
a mark of business , but should he at anytime find the monotony of a country gentleman ' s life , let him come to his child , Rosslyn , and he would be received with open arms , a hearty and cordial welcome . Lord Brooke , in reply , said that he felt that that was one of those occasions when words do not come sufficiently quick to express the brotherly kindness with which he was
welcomed to the Rosslyn Lodge , named after a man with whom Freemasonry in Scotland had been connected for years—a name looked up to by those who lived in Dunmow and its neighbourhood—Lord Rosslyn . One of the pleasantest parts of his duties as P . G . M . was the friendly manner in which he was met in the lodges . Brethren put aside all feeling except brotherly , and the many occasions
kind feelings were expressed to him made him respect Masonic traditions . AU knew the reelings which actuated Masons existed to a very great extent in their deepest nature . Brother is stronger than when apart from Masonry . His lordship then gave an illustration of his meaning by relating an occurrencethat occurredjn private life , and assured the brethren it gave him the greatest pleasure to see that
Freemasonry was not dying out in the province , and they might be sure , and could take his word for it that his Deputy , Bro . Philbrick , and he used the greatest judgment in increasing lodges , and he did not wish to undermine existing lodges . He was glad to say the numbers of brethren were steadily increasing in the county . As an instance of strong Masonic feeling which existed in the Craft , he mentioned
that in India he was welcomed there as heartily as he had been at home . The VV . M . had been kind enough to mention the name of a lady very dear to him , and he thanked them all for the kind manner they had received the name of his wife . Should he , as the W . M . said , possibly cccupy a public position , whatever his future might be , his Masonic brethren would expect him to act up to his
Masonic pledges , and he would do so . He concluded by hoping to be spared to meet them oltener in the Rosslyn Lodge . The Worshipful Master then gave "The D . P . G . M ., Bro . Philbrick , and the rest of the Past Grand Officers , Present and Past . " Bro . Finch , P . J . G . W ., expressed the pleasure it gave
him to return thanks for the kindness the P . G . Officers always received when they visited any lodge in the county . Bro . A . Durrant , Prov . G . T ., also thanked them , and in the course of his remarks alluded to the old way of acknowledging that toast . He also said that in 1 S 59 he was selected Prov . G . Treasurer , and must now begin to look upon himself as an old Mason , and as such he
congratulated the brethren of the Rosslyn Lodge on the very efficient manner the work was done , and wished them all thc happiness they could wish themselves as long as they lived . The P . G . M . then proposed "The Health of Bro . Ferris , their excellent W . M ., " and said he did so with the greatest pleasure , because he knew the responsibility of W . M . 's .
Their duties were severe , but they were pleasant duties when filled with true Masonic spirit . It was a great pleasure to him to see their W . M . occupy the chair so well . He looked back to the time when he was W . M . of that old lodge the Shakespeare , which could boast of a long list of the ablest Masters , and the Rosslyn was in no way lacking , and none of them fulfilled thc office better than their
present W . M . Bro . Ferris , in reply , said he was deeply indebted to the P . G . M . and brethren for the compliment they had just paid him , and would endeavour to complete his year of office so as to merit their approbation . 'I he W . M . then gave " The Past Masters , " responded to briefly by Bros . Clapham and Snell .
" The Visitors , " responded to by Bros . Newman and Willcox , who both expressed their great sense of approbation of the working of the lodge , and the arrangements made for their comfort . "The Officers" was responded to by Bro . Lyle , and "The Charities" responded to by Bro . Dehane .
The Tyler s toast concluded the evening . The enjoyment of the brethren was enhanced by the singing of Bros . Sehvin , Smith , and Lyle , and recitations by Bros . Rattray and Marsh . Bro . Williams presided at the piano . The Town Hall was beautifully decorated with evergreens , flowers , and banners .
LIVERPOOL—Antient Briton Lodge ( No . 1675 ) . —The Cwmri are invariably enthusiastic in anything they may interest themselves in , and when , some few years since , it was proposed to have a lodge to accommodate Welsh brethren and their friends in Liverpool the project was most warmly taken up , and has been remarkably successful . Not only has the lodge been
financially prosperous and had wonderful growth in numbers , but it has done more for the Charities , without exception , than any lodge of equal age . The gathering on Tuesday , the 24 th ult ., was the most numerous held at the Masonic Temple , Hope-street , for a considerable period , and all ranks in the Craft were fully represented . The chair was taken by Bro . John Lewis , I . P . M ., supported by Bros .
Dr . Kellett-Smith , P . M ., P . P . G . R . ; James Williams , I . P . M . ; Robert Wylie , P . M ., P . S . G . D . of England . Among the unusually large concourse of visitors were Bros . T . J . " The Past Masters , Treasurer , and Secretary " followed . The W . M . regretted the absence of Bro . Forge , P . M . and Secretary . However , it was very rare indeed that that worthy brother , who had done so much for the lodge , was absent . Bro . Filler , P . M . and Treasurer , was also a most invaluable officer , and his presence was always hailed with delight . With regard to Bro . Warren , the I . P . M ., the
lodge had seen how well he had worked during the last two years . Of the other Past Masters he could safely say that they were formed of good sterling material , and were worthy brethren in every way . Bros .
