THE FREEMASONS' CALENDAR AND DIRECTORY FOR THE PROVINCE OF DERBYSHIRE , iSSS . This handy and exceedingly neat publication , printed by the firm of H . H . and W . VVe spoke warmly of the editor's services when reviewing the edition for 1 SS 7 ,
and said then that the 12 th issue was the best of the series . This edition for iSSS is arranged oil precisely the same lines , save that the usual list of lodges in adjoining provinces is omitted . Another lodge has been added , viz ., No . 2224 , Long Eaton , raising the total to 22 . There are six chapters as before , but five Mark lodges , being an increase of one of the latter , domiciled at Ilkeston , and
being No . 373 . There are 147 Mark and 131 Royal Arch Masons in the province , so the former run the latter " very close . " The Mark lodges belong to the large province consisting of four counties under the genial rule of the "Masonic Veteran , " the R . VV . Bro . William Kelly , of Leicester . The chapters and the lodges are under the Most Hon . the Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., who has
long been the respected Prov . Grand Master , and has , as his Deputy , the R . W . Bro . H . C . Okeover , P . G . W . of England . 1629 , or about \_ votes to each member in the province . The usual addresses were effectively rendered by the Installing Master , Bro . H .
Marks , I . P . M . Routine business having been transacted , the lodge was closed . The brethren then partook of an excellent banquet , which was followed by the customary loyal and Masonic toasts . "The Queen and the Craft , " "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . VVG . M ., " and " The Grand Officers" having
been duly honoured , the VV . M . gave "The Visitors , " observing that he had departed from the usual course in proposing that toast next , as some of the visiting brethren would have to leave soon . He extended to them a hearty welcome , and coupled the names of Bros . Jacobs , P . P . G . P . Herts , and T . I . Barnes , P . M 033 .
Bro . S . Jacobs , P . P . G . P . Herts , having returned thanks , expressed the pleasure it afforded him to see so many young brethren around the table whom he had known from childhood . He would further say that although he had visited many lodges in the course of his Masonic career and seen the various ceremonies performed , he had never before seen the ceremony of raising rendered in a more
impressive manner . Bro . T . J . Barnes , P . M . 933 , in reply , said that although he could not say he had known many brethren present from childhood , yet he had known them from ther Masonic childhood . He could also say he had visited many lodges and seen the working—some had been good , some indifferent , and some had been bad—but he had never been
at a lodge where the working was so perfect as on the present occasion . He was not present to see the ceremony of raising , but from the excellent manner in which Bro . Marks , I . P . M ., had performed the various duties in the lodge of instruction , he had no doubt the ceremony was worked to the satisfaction of the brethren and to the credit of the lodge It was one
thing to know the words of the ritual , but quite another thing to deliver them effectually so that the candidate could understand them and be impressed accordingly . From what he had seen of tbe 1 . P . M . he was quite sure that in delivering the words of the ceremony he was able to make himself understood , and that the brother who had been raised would go away fully impressed with that
ceremony . As regarded the installation ceremony , he was sorry to see so few W . M . 's and P . M . 's present at the Board . He could , however , understand that there was a meeting of the Board of Benevolence that evening , and some had been present there to represent various cases . He would assure those brethren who were not present at the installation ceremony , that he had scarcely ever heard it done as well ,
and never better . He was very pleased and gratified to have the opportunity of expressing his approbation . It might be presumption on his part to express that opinion , but he had been the tutor to the majority present . He did not say that with vanity , but with a great deal of pride . With the exception of a few years he had been present at all the installing meetings of thelodge since its
consecration . The W . M . had that evening given them an earnest of the manner in which he would perform his duties in the future . He considered that the investiture of officers was rather a difficult and intricate subject , and when done well was one of the best guarantees they could have that any duty that mightdevolve upon theW . M . in the future would be creditably performed . He knew that Bro . Shoesmith
W . M ., had a very difficult task in following such an excellent Master as Bro . Marks , but he would do credit to the lodge . It was one of their privileges in Freemasonry to visit other lodges and receive the hospitality extended to them . The visitors had had good fellowship extended to them , and had thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality they had received . They returned sincere thanks for that
kindness , and united in wishing continuous prosperity to the Friars Lodge . Bro . I . P . Cohen , P . M ., 205 , also responded . Bro . Marks , I , P . M ., said he had grea ' t pleasure for the first time in his life in proposing the toast of "The VV . Master . " Bro . Shoesmith , W . M ., and himself were initiated at the same time , and he always had the idea that
their present W . M . would follow him closely through the various offices . It was therefore with great pleasure that he saw Bro . Shoesmith attain the chair , and it was a gratification to him to be enabled to propose his health . As far as the working of the W . M . was concerned , the brethren had a conundrum to solve , but he would be the one to guess it . Their lodge was happy to know they had had
efficient P . M . 's from the oldest to the youngest , and with a little more instruction the W . M . would be quite equal to the duties of the chair . As time was on the wing he would simply ask the brethren to cordially drink to the health of the VV . M . Brn . Shoesmith , W . M ., tendered sincere thanks to the I . P . M . for the kindly manner in which he had proposed the toast , and to thc brethren for theii * reception of the toast .

He was thankful to the members for giving- k- " the opportunity of following the I . P . sincere pleasure to reply for " J he Past Masters , " and i express the gratification he felt at seeing the lod ge in s ? a creditable position . He would say it reflected great c r on the energy and determination of those who had «• into office , and had infused a spirit of emulation in th- 2 who were following . 3 e
tiro . Marks , I . P . M ., also replied . He was but an in' * ate as regarded Past Mastership , but he intended to prop "'" in that as he had in the other offices . of over £ 64 in hand , in addition to £ 47 in the lodge Benevolent Fund , l ' he balance sheet was received and adopted unanimously . The lodge having been closed , the brethren assembled in the banqueting room , where a capital menu , prepared by the worthy host , Bro . D . Bear , in his usual faultless
style , was fully discussed . TheW . M . proposed in brief but well chosen words Ihe toasts of " The Queen , " " His Royal Highness the M . W . G . M ., and the Present and Past Grand Officers " in theit order , and which were each enthusiastically received . The I . P . M ., Bro . L . E . Eagle , said the gavel had been
entrusted to him , and the biethren must be aware it was for the purpose of proposing " The Health of the W . M ., " which he considered the most important toast that evening * . The W . M . and . himself had been regularly following each other ' s footsteps in the various duties of the lodge from their initiation , and he was proud in having installed
his successor into the honourable position he now occupied , and trusted he would have as prosperous a year as the one just concluded . The Worshipful Master , in reply , thanked the brethren for the heartiness in which they had received the toast , and after eulogising on the ability of the officers he had chosen ,
he also relied upon the brethren generally in supporting him through his year of office . The next important toast was that of " The Visitors , " which was heartily given and responded to by several or the brethren , who were unanimous in their praise of the working of the lodge , particularly the impressive ceremony
they had witnessed that evening . Ihe toast of "The Installing and Past Masters" was next in order , when the VV . M . embraced the opportunity of investing the I . P . M ., Bro . L . E . Eagle , with a gold P . M . ' s jewel , as also with the new regulation P . M . ' s collar and jewel ( manufactured by Bro . George Kenning ) , the
brethren gave good evidence of their appreciation by uniting with the W . M . in wishing him long life to wear them as a honour to himself and the lodge . . Bro . L . E . Eagle made a brief and appropriate reply ; followed by responses from Bros . Hook , P . M ., Burnett , P . M ., and Anderson , P . M ., who were present . . The toast of " The Treasurer and Secretary " was also
well received . Bro .

Bro .
