officer in the regiment as well as W . M . of the lodge , and he hoped that members of the regiment who became attached to Masonry would join that lodge , and make it strong in military members . In drinking the toast the brethren felt sure they had a W . M . worthy of their sympathy and admiration in every way , and one of whom they had every reason to be proud . Bro . Capt . W . R . J . McLean , W . M ., said it was an extremely pleasant duty to reply to the toast of one ' s health theoretically , but practically it was one of the most

unpleasant , and they would therefore excuse any shortcomings in his response . It went without saying—as many things did which were none the less dear to the heart—that that was an extremely proud moment for him . It had been the object of 11 years ' constant Masonic ambition . When he was initiated u years ago by Bro . Hobbiss , P . M ., that brother told him he hoped to see him in the chair , and he hoped to do credit to that Past Master now that he had arrived at that important office . He also wished to

draw attention to the fact that the I . P . M . was another of Bro . Hobbiss' initiates , and he thought that up to the present day they had not made a bad show . He was extremely grateful to see so many present—both members and visitors—including many old comrades of their dear old regiment . To those who had the privilege of belonging both to the regiment and the lodge , the connection between the two was one of the greatest things they prized . He asked them all to accept , in their best meaning , the two words — 'fThankyou . " . . _ „ „ . .

Refreshment followed labour . Bro . George Everett responded in happy terms on behalf of " The Grand Officers . " In the course of his remarks he alluded to the fact that the M . W . Grand Master

on the 28 th April would complete his 25 th year as the ruler of English Freemasons . He believed that the event would be signalised by the promotion of 25 brethren to the purple of Grand Lodge as Past Grand Officers . With the increase ot lodges there became a large number of brethren eligible for the coveted position of G . Officers . "The Health of the W . M . " was given by the I . P . M ., who congratulated Bro . Wolsey on the able manner in which the ceremony of raising had been performed that evening . The W . M . had been particularly happy in the chair , and his year would be

in every way a memorable one . The W . M ., having briefly replied , gave the toast of "The Initiates . " 'this pledge having been duly honoured , the candidates acknowledged the compliment . Thetoastof "The Past Masters" was coupled with the names of Bros . Davies and Lundie , ai . d " The Health of the Officers" with the names of Bros . Hopkins and Harris . During the proceedings a musical entertainment was presented , in which Bros . H . Linwood and T . Davies , Mr . Wolsey , and others appeared . The toast of "The Provincial Grand Officers , " was coupled with the name of Bro . J . T . Briggs . Thetoastof "The W . M . " was submitted by the I . P . M ., in brief , but pertinent terms . The W . M ., in his reply , expressed his great regret that , in consequence of the results of an accident , he had not been able to discharge his duties in the chair as he should have liked to have done . His memory was not what it was .

The toast of "The Past Masters" was then given . The W . M . said that he regretted that several were not able to be present that evening in consequence of illness . He hoped that they would soon be restored to their normal health . Bro . Dr . Hinton , I . P . M ., replied . "The Health of the Treasurer and Secretary " followed . The W . M . paid a high

compliment to the two brethren occupying those positions . Bro . Briggs briefly responded . # In the course of his remarks , he mentioned the many happy years that he had spent in their midst . The lodge had elected him for a long time to occupy the responsible position of Treasurer , and to discharge the duties had been to him a matter of love .

The Secretary , in his reply , mentioned the circumstance that the testimonial to one of their old and respected brethren , viz ., Bro . W . Fisher , A . G . P . England and P . M . of No . 1503 , would be presented on the 23 rd of April . "The Health of the Officers" was coupled with the names of Bros . Bonney , Dobson , Hemming , Foes , and Hectslet . in due form . Bro . R . Constable Blundell was . then duly installed as W . M . by Bro . the Rev . P . R . Mahony , P . P . G . Chap ., and the following officers were invested : Bros . W . ' s list , and 10 guineas were voted to the South African Masonic Relief Fund . The W . M . presented the LP . M . with a Past Master's jewel in recognition of his services in the chair during the past year .

Lodge was closed , and a banquet subsequently held at the Constitutional H ill . The usual loyal toasts having been disposed of , Bro . Frank Morrison , P . M ., proposed " The R . W . Prov . Grand Master , " and congratulated the province upon having a Prov . Grand Master , who , in spite of his many duties , yet found time to devote to Freemasonry . Bro . the Earl of Onslow , Prov . G . M ., in reply , said : It affords me very great pleasure at last to have the opportunity of being present on the occasion of one of

your installation meetings , and particularly on an occasion when the W . M . of the year has been installed by my excellent friend—your W . M . in the past year—who has been my Prov . Grand Chaplain . I note with some interest that upon your list of songs you will hear is one entitled " The wearing of the green . " I have no doubt it has been placed on the list by the brother who had authority for the time being , and I am curious whether it will be the old or the new version . I am sure that the loyal spirit of my

friend the I . P . M . ( Bro . Malony ) will prompt him to suggest it should be the new version " By orderof the Queen . " I am very pleased indeed to have come down to this corner of the province andto have seen the working of the Gatwick Lodge , and from the way in which the W . M . discharged that small part which falls to a newly-installed Mister , I may safely say the work will be well done . 1 wish him most heartily a successful year of office , and the same to the S . W . and J . W . should they be elected to fill the chair he now so worthily occupies .

Bro . R . A . Thompson , P . M ., proposed "The Prov . G . Officers , " to which Bro . A . Meier , Prov . G . D ., made suitable response . Bro . T . H . Roberts , Prov . G . Treas ., also replied , in his usual happy vein . As Prov . Grand Treasurer he had signed some cheques , and had , therefore , done more work than many Prov . Grand Officers . Aspirants for Prov . Grand office need not be afraid of being over-worked , but when appointed he knew they would carry out their duties with the same energy that Bro . Meier had displayed .

Bro . Rev . P . R . Mahony , I . P . M ., proposed "The W . M . " He said that Bro . Constable Blundell , was his brother initiate in the Git wick Lodge and they had worked together for nearly six years in the lodge of instruction , and whatever they were worth that evening they owed entirely to the help they received in that lodge . He was conscious of his own imperfections , but he was sure from the way in which the W . M . had worked in the lodge of instruction that he would do credit to the lodge . He ( the I . P . M . ) proposed the toast from the bottom of his heart and wished the W . M . a very successful year of office .

THE WORSHIPFUL MASTER . Bro . R . Constable Blundell , W . M ., sincerely thanked the I . P . M . for the very kind way in which he had spoken of him . He should endeavour to do his duty in the chair at which he had arrived . He said last year as J . W . that it was his intention to climb into the Master ' s chair , but he had made a step which had led him into it much more quickly than he expected . He was pleased there was some work to be done during his year and it would not be his fault if that work was not carried out to their satisfaction . Thanks to the veiy able and efficient way in which they had been trained io the lodee of

instruction , they had been taught the ritual , and had it not been for that training he should have considered before he climbed up , as he had done , to the Worshipful Master ' s chair . He thanked them all for the very kind way in which they had drunk his health . The W . M . regretted that Bro . McLeod had been obliged to leave without soliciting their support for the R . M . I . B ., but he ( the W . M . ) felt sure the brethren would loyally support bis list as Steward . Bro . A . Meier , P . M ., next proposed " The Visitors . "

Bros . Rev . T . C . Mahony ( son of the I . P . M . ) , W . Rayner , G . Freeman , and Edis replied . The W . M . gave "The Installing Master and Past Masters . " Bro . Rev . P . R . Mahony , P . P . G . C , I . P . M ., in response , referred to the extreme C leasure it had given him to install Bro . Blundell . He no doubt failed in some respects , ut he had done his best . He sincerely thanked the brethren for the manner in which they had treated him dudng his year of office . Durincr the time he had h » pn rann ^ i . ^

with Freemasonry his nationality had never been referred to until that evening , because there was no nationality in Freemasonry . He was , however , very proud of the manner in which the Prov . G . M . had referred to his nationality , and he was extremely proud as an Irishman to be present that night , and to know that no one had been found in his country to annoy his Queen , which proved the national characteristic of an r ^

hm-m—that he was a true man if he was let alone . Bro . T . H . Roberts , P . M ., and Steggles , P . M ., also replied , after which " The Treasurer and Secretary " and "The Officers " were duly honoured . The contents of the Charity column were added to the amount to be forwarded to the South African Masonic Relief Fund . The musical programme , which gave general satisfaction , was carried out by Miss Annie Swinfen , Miss Annie Wilson , and Messrs . Ager Grover and Musgrove TufnaiL .
