"FREEMASONS' CALENDAR AND DIRECTORY FOR THE PROVINCE OK LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND , igoo . "— This extremely neat and carefully-arranged annual is now in its 28 th year of publication . The editor , until 1900 , has been the zealous Brother B . A . Smith , LL . M ., & c , P . M . 523 , P . Prov . S . G . W ., who has ably discharged that duty for the last 14 vears . Prior to that period , the esteemed D . Prov . G . M ., Bro . S . S . Partridge , P . A . G . D . C . Eng ., was the editor for the first 13 years of its existence , as noted in the preface to the present edition . The new editor is Bro . the

Rev . H . S . Biggs , B . A . Lond ., P . M . 523 , W . W . 2429 , P . Prov . G . Chap ., who is the respected Head Master of the celebrated Grammar School , Lutterworth . His lirst words are expressive ol the deep regret felt by himself , in common with ths province , that owing to Bro . B . A . Smith's " constantly increasing engagements , and his appointment to other important Masonic offices , chiefly in connection with the Central Masonic Charities , he has been compelled to resign his editorship ot the Calendar . " It is but fair to addthat Bro . the Rev . Biggs " has his work cut out" to follow in the steps

, of two such veterans , but they will cheerfully agree in our estimate of the first issue under his care , that the new editor has succeeded admirably , and brought out the 28 th issue of the Calendar in a manner full y equal to its predecessors , not only because the arrangement is practically on the old lines throughout , but no pains have been spared to ensure accuracy and completeness . There are 14 lodges in the provinc * , returning S 03 subscribing members ( whose names are all given , with their Masonic rank , & c ) , and as the votes for the Central Masonic Charities total 2715 tall duly detailed ) , it will

be seen that though not one of the largest provinces , there is no lack ot zeal on behalf of the Craft in Leicestershire There are five R . A . chapters , having 230 companions , and five Mark lodges , with 201 Mark Masters , besides other Bodies . The frontispiece for 1900 is a good photograph of Bro . Edward Holmes , P . M . 279 and 2429 , the Prov . G . Secretarv . about whom the editor has some appreciative words . Bro . riolm ; s has

been Chief Constable ot Leicester from 1 SS 9 ( not 1 S 99 ) , and was initiated in No 279 in 1 S 83 , becoming its Master in 1 S 92 . "Hewas also a founder and W . M . of 24 . 29 in 1894 . As Prov . G . Sec , his onerous and honorary duties date from 1892 , during which period he has laboured with that zeal and assiduity which has always been the chief characteristic of all his Masonic work . " We wish Bro . Biggs every pleasure and success as editor of this very useful compilation .

" Tug FREEMASONS'CALENDAR AND DIRECTORY FOR THE PROVINCE OK DERBYSHIRE , 1900 . —Compiled by Bro . Wm . Naylor , P . G . S . B . Eng ., Prov . G . Sec . and Prov . G . S . E . "—This neat and well-arranged annual for 1900 is published on its "Silver Anniversary , " and is a credit to the Prov . Grand Secretary , who has so long and so well looked after the interests of his Province . There are 27 lodges in Derbyshire , with 1625 subscribing members ; eight Royal Arch chapters , and 239 companions ; and eight Mark lodges , with 282 Mark Masters . As the average membership per lodge is 60 , there is still plenty of room for the expansion of the Province , for even 30 lodges

with the same total would average over 50 per lodge . As respects Royal Arch Masonry , there is every need of a revival of interest in that ceremony , the numerical condition being lower than usual in a country where the Degree is far from being supported as it should be . There is also a Rose Croix chapter and a K . T . preceptory . About all these bodies there is abundance of information , and also as to the Central Masonic Charities . The votes are carefully arranged , and exhibit a total of G 133 , with 1290 additional for the Mark Fund . These figures are indicative of much zeal and hearty interest in the welfare of the Craft . The portrait this year is of Bro . W . Wynne Jeudwine , P . M ., P . Prov . S . G . W . of Derby , accompanied with a sympathetic sketch of that brother ' s Masonic career .

THE ANNUAL REPORT AND LIST OK SUBSCRIBERS OK THE ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS , to December 31 st , 1899 , makes a large and most massive volume , extending to over 700 pages . Copies may be had from the Secretary , Bro . J . Morrison McLeod , or the Publishers of the Freemason . Ten years ago the size of this most useful Annual was just half of what it is now , and had nothing like the interesti ng particulars to be found in the latest Report . The labour of compilation must have been considerable , and it is to be hoped such devotion to the interests of the Craft will be warmly appreciated . A new feature is a List of the Provincial Charity Representatives , to be found nowhere else .

EAST LANCASHIRE SYSTEMATIC MASONIC EDUCATIONAL AND BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION .

A general committee meeting of the above Institution was held on Friday , the 27 th ult ., at the Freemasons' Hall , Manchester , Bro . C . D . Cheetham , P . P . G . W ., presided . The minutes of various Sub-Committees were read and confirmed . Bro . C . D . Cheetham was again unanimously elected Chairman ot the Institution , and Bro . J . T . Hooper Vice-Chairman . Eight numbers were elected as an Election Committee . Twenty members were elected as an Education Board .

w Two special choral concerts are announced by the Sunday League at Oueen ' s Hall . On one a Wagner programme , and on the other Mr . Colendge Taylor's " Hiawatha" and " Minnehaha , " will bs performed .

Consecration Of The Salebeia Chapter, No. 566.

CONSECRATION OF THE SALEBEIA CHAPTER , No . 566 .

The consecration of the above chapter took place at the Masonic Hall , Selby , on Thursday , the 24 th ult . The St . Germain Chapter , which formerly was attached to the lodge of that name , became extinct in 1 S 79 , therefore it is a pleasing fact that after a lapse of 21 years this Supreme Degree has once more been restored to Selby .

VISIT OF HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN TO THE MASONIC FEMALE ORPHAN SCHOOL , DUBLIN .

Her Majesty the Queen , accompanied by H . R . H . Ihe Princess Henry of Battenberg , and attended by the Dowager Countess of Southampton , honoured the Freemasons of Ireland by visiting their Female Orphan School , Dublin , on the afternoon of the 24 th ult . An immense crowd of people had assembled in the vicinity of the Masonic Female School at Ballsbridge , and here the Queen was the recipient of one of the most enthusiastic receptions that have marked her visit to Dublin .

The girls of the School , to the number of 104 , occupied a crimson covered platform in front of the building , while the boys from the corresponding Charitable Institution , the Masonic Orphan Bays' School at Richview , numbering 86 , were drawn up on the opposite side of the avenue . The girls , who were attired in the uniform of the School , consisting of blue dresses , over which were white aprons , each displayed loyal favours , while

the boys had medallion buttons on their coats . Bro . and Mrs . Moore , Master and Matron of the Boys' School , and the various assistants , and Miss Grant , Matron , Miss Russell Jones , principal teacher , and the assistant teachers of the Girls' School , were in attendance with their respective pupils . Grouped in the centre of the platform were Governors of the Schools , while to right and left of the avenue were many privileged friends

of the Charity . Those present included Bro . Sir James Creed Meredith , Dep . G . Master , and Lady Meredith ; Bro . the Rev . Benjamin Gibson , Senior G .
