When the work of restoration is completed it is proposed to hold an open-air service , at which the memorial will once more be unveiled .

Lord Derby , the President of the show , in introducing the Lord Mayor , referred to the trial of self-p-opelled motor cars that has taken place in Liverpool within the present week , and said that this year the trials had been witnessed by representatives of foreign powers as well as of the War Ollice , the Board of Trade , and the Post Office , and many others interested in locomotion , and it was , therefore , right that self-propelled motors should be admitted to the show . The number of entries is larger than usual , and the opening was highly successful .
HER MAJESTY has been graciously pleased to convey to Viscount Peel , Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery , her wish to present to the gallery as a national possession a portrait of herself in the robes worn at her coronation , painled by Sir George HayU r , and at present in Kensington Palace . A SUCCESSFUL INSURANCE COMPANY . —The annual dinner of the British Key and Property Registry , Limited , of Glasgow and London , the pioneer company in key and accident insurance , has been held at the Holborn Resturant . The chairman was Mr . F . Norie Miller , of Perth , who is so well known in the insurance world as the organiser and developer of several of the most successful Scotch insurance companies , including the General Accident and the Northern Plate Glass . Mr . Miller had the support of Mr . A . Robertson Cowper ( who instituted this now popular form of property and accident insurance , and is managing director of the British Key and Property
Registry , Limited ) , and Mr . A . T . Macfarlane , of Chatham . In the course ot an enjoyable evening some very interesting remarks were made as to the position of the company , and it was stated , among other things , that the increase in premiums ( which are only one shilling each ) for the year exceeded £ 5010 . The company have under consideration the extension of their business to America and the Colonies . AN INSPIRED ARTICLE in the Official Messenger of St . Petersburg reviews at length the results of the Peace Conference , and declares that they have fully come up to the expectations of the Russian Government . They afford , it says , a fresh basis for international peace without impairing the sovereign rights of individual States .
THE NAVAL MANOEUVRES are at an end . The convoy hac been brought safely into Milford Haven , and the enemy , represented by the vessels under the command of Vice-Admiral Rawson , have signally failed . Throughout tbe war , which began on Saturday last , neither the battleships nor cruisers of the lival fleets have come into contact with one another .
THE SHAMROCK , after meeting with a slight mishap to her bowsprit , which delayed her departure , left Fairlie on her way to New York , and received an enthusiastic send-off . Before she sailed , Sir Thomas Lipton , her owner , addressed the crew , and , in the course of a stirring speech , assured them that they would meet with perfectly fair play on the other side of the Atlantic . THE SMITHFIELD MARTYRS' MEMORIAL . —A movement is on foot for the
restoration of the Martyrs' Memorial , which was erected in the year 1 S 70 at Smithfield by the members of the Protestant Alliance . The tablet marks the spot were men , such as John Rogers , John Bradford , and Archdeacon Pnilpot , were " done to death" for their adherence to the Protestant faith . When the work of restoration is completed it is proposed to hold an open-air service , at which the memorial will once more be unveiled .
IN A REVIEW of the work on the development ot the Craft , recently written by the Grand Registrar , the Newcastle Dailv Journal says : " Mr . Strachan has brought to his task , not only painstaking research , " but an honestly critical judgment . . . . D . C . The Hon . A . Yorke was in attendance . Lieutenant Freiherr von Strombeck had the honour of being received by the Queen yesterday morning , and delivered a letter from the German Emperor .
THE ROYAL LANCASHIRE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY ' annual show was formally opened at Liverpool on Thursday , in brilliant weather , by the Lord Mayor of the city . Lord Derby , the President of the show , in introducing the Lord Mayor , referred to the trial of self-p-opelled motor cars that has taken place in Liverpool within the present week , and said that this year the trials had been witnessed by representatives of foreign powers as well as of the War Ollice , the Board of Trade , and the Post Office , and many others interested in locomotion , and it was , therefore , right that self-propelled motors should be admitted to the show . The number of entries is larger than usual , and the opening was highly successful .
HER MAJESTY has been graciously pleased to convey to Viscount Peel , Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery , her wish to present to the gallery as a national possession a portrait of herself in the robes worn at her coronation , painled by Sir George HayU r , and at present in Kensington Palace . At a recent special meeting of the Board the Trustees rccepted this gift in the name of the nation , and offered to her Majesty their most sincere and hearty thanks for the honour thus conferred upon the National Poitrait Gallery . As it is not possible to make arrangements for the imn ediate transfer of this portrait from Kensington Palace , further notice will be given as soon as it can be placed on view in the gallery .
A SUCCESSFUL INSURANCE COMPANY . —The annual dinner of the British Key and Property Registry , Limited , of Glasgow and London , the pioneer company in key and accident insurance , has been held at the Holborn Resturant . The chairman was Mr . F . Norie Miller , of Perth , who is so well known in the insurance world as the organiser and developer of several of the most successful Scotch insurance companies , including the General Accident and the Northern Plate Glass . Mr . Miller had the support of Mr . A . Robertson Cowper ( who instituted this now popular form of property and accident insurance , and is managing director of the British Key and Property
Registry , Limited ) , and Mr . A . T . Macfarlane , of Chatham . In the course ot an enjoyable evening some very interesting remarks were made as to the position of the company , and it was stated , among other things , that the increase in premiums ( which are only one shilling each ) for the year exceeded £ 5010 . The company have under consideration the extension of their business to America and the Colonies . The dinner , which is an annual event , gave the company an opportunity of treating their officials to a three days'holiday in the Metropolis , the arrangements for which were very satisfactorily carried out by Messrs .
