George Washington , Commander-in-Chief of the American Army during the War of Independence , and first President of the

United States , referred at some length to some of the numerous mementoes of that distinguished brother ' s career , both public and Masonic , which still existed , and were especially associated with the important function itself by the M . W . G . M . These were as follow : — The gavel presented to Washington and used by him as President of the United States and Grand Master pro tern ., at the laying of the corner-stone of the Capitol ,

Washington , 18 th September , 1793 . The same had been used on various occasions since , but notably at laying the cornerstone of the Yorktown Monument 1 SS 1 . It was presented by Washington immediately after he had used it as stated to Potomac Lodge , No . 9 , and has ever since been most religiously preserved by it . The volume of the Sacred Law , belonging to Fredericksburg Lodge , No . 4 , Grand Lodge of Virginia , on which

Washington , at the time a minor , was initiated 4 th December , 1752 ; and the Constitution of that lodge , with Washington's signature appended . The volume of the Sacred Law , the property of St . G . CHAPTER OF NOVA SCOTIA . The recent annual convocation of this Gran d Chapter was most successful , onl y one of the subordinate chapters being unrepresented , while the reports as regards its financial position and the strength of its membership were of a

most encouraging character . The following are the principal Grand Officers for the year , namely : Comps . Rev . H . D . De Blois , Grand High Priest ; L . B . Archibald , G . King ; James Dumpster , G . Scribe ; Rev . D . C . Moore , G . Chaplain ; W . A . Herron , G . Treasurer ; and George T . Smithers , G . Secretary .

G . LODGE LIBRARY , IOWA . , } ne new building erected for the reception of the valuable library be onging to the Grand Lodge of Iowa cost 32 , 000 dollars ( £ 6400 ) , the site on which it stands having been presented by citizens of Cedar Rapids . The report ot the Grand Librarian is embellished with an illustration of the structure , while visitors speak of itas being extremely

beautiful as regards style , appointments , and decoration . Ut the contents of the library , many are almost priceless , and there are few , if any , Grand Lod ges elsewhere which can point with justifiable pride to a finer or more valuable collection , thanks to the care and generosity bestowed by tiro . lheo . S . Parvin , G . Sec , who has taken the leading part in its establishment .

GRAND LODGE OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA . We learn from a copy of the proceedings of this newlyestabnshed Grand Lodge , at its Quarterly Communication Freemasons' Hall , Flinders-street , Adelaide , on the 15 th April last , that great and satisfactory progress has been made since its constitution in April , 1 SS 4 . There was a full attendance , M . W . Bro . Chief Justice the Hon . S . J . Way , G . Master , presided , and among the principal Grand er

The Grand Master ' s address contained a full description of the principal events of the past year , and hopefully anticipated that recognition of the independence of the G .

Lodge he presides over by the United Grand Lodge , which the latter has since so gracefully accorded , as well as by the Grand Lodges of Ireland and Scotland . Four new lodges , raising the number on the roll to 34 , had been constituted , and were in good working order , the greatest care being ; taken by their members , as well as by those of the other lodges , in accepting only reputable persons as candidates for admission into the Orderwhile notwithstanding

, that several brethren had died , and others been struck off the roll for various reasons , the total membership had increased from 206 4 on the 17 th April , 1 SS 4 , to 2241 on 30 th September following . The finances were , all things considered , 111 a satisfactory position , the Benevolent Fund having a balance in hand of £ So , and the G . M . hoped to see established at no distant date a fund " for charitable and educational purposes , which will be of lasting benefit

to the poor and aged , the widows and orphans in our midst , and a credit to our honourable institution . " The hope was also expressed that as Grand Lodge already possessed the nucleus of a library , one that would be accessible to the brethren , and contain all Masonic works of value for reference and study , would soon be founded . The address concluded with the announcement that the G . M ., in deference to the wishes of many of the leading members

of Grand Lodge , had consented to be re-elected for another year , and a vote of thanks for his services having been passed by acclamation and acknowledged , the report of the Board of General Purposes was submitted and agreed to , after which the following were invested as Grand Officers for the year , namely : Bro .

The volume of the Sacred Law , the property of St . beautiful as regards style , appointments , and decoration .
