MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will hold their next regular monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall on Wednesday next , the 9 th inst ., at 4 p . m . The weekly meetings of the Islington Lodge of Instruction , No . 1471 , will be resumed on Tuesday , the Sth instant , at 7 . 30 p . m ., at the Cock Tavern , Highbury . Bro . W . Hancock is Preceptor , and Bro . C . M . Coxon , Hon . Secretary .

The Royal yacht Victoria and Albert , which the Queen has placed at the disposal of the Duchess of Albany for a fortnight's cruise in the Channel , was prevented by stress of weather from leaving Portsmouth on Tuesday .

A regular meeting of the Lodge of Honour , No . 526 , Wolverhampton , will be held at the Star and Garter Hotel , in that town , on Friday next , the nth instant , at 7 p . m . There is a tolerably full programme of business to be transacted .

At the recent half-yearly general meeting of the subscribers to the Goldsmiths' and Jewellers' Annuity and . Asylum Institution , Bro . Major George Lambert , F . S . A ., P . G . S . B ., was unanimously re-elected President of the Society . Before leaving Portsmouth on the 27 th ult . the Duke of Cambridge congratulated the Inniskilling Dragoons on the smartness and efficiency they had shown at the inspection , and declared them to be one of the most distinguished cavalry regiments in the service .

The Princess Louise ( Marchioness of Lome ) , after leaving Kendal , paid a visit to Barrow-in-Furness , for the purpose of opening a fancy fair in aid of St . George ' s Church . Subsequently her Royal Highness leftfor MuncasterCastle , where she remained for a time as the guest of Bro . the Earl and Countess of Muncaster .

Bro . Lord Mayor Sir Joseph Savory , Bart ., and the Lady Mayoress were entertained at luncheon at North Berwick on Tuesday by Sir W . Hamilton-Dairymple ( Lord of the Manor ) , the Provost , and other friends . It had been in contemplation to hold a picnic on the Bass Rock , but owing to the tempestuous state of the weather , the idea had to be given up .

The first annual meeting of the James Terry Lodge , No . 2372 , will be held at the Cheshunt Hall , Crossbrookstreet , Cheshunt , on Thursday next , the 10 th inst ., when Bro . P . L . Blackmore , S . W ., and W . M . elect , will be installed as W . M . in succession to Bro . James Terry , who will have completed his year of office . The " James Terry " has fared most prosperously since its consecration in iSgo .

Among those present at the marriage in St . Patrick ' s Cathedral , Dublin , on Saturday last , of Captain H . A . Kinloch , 60 th Rifles , with Miss Jane A . M . Guinness , only daughter of Mr . Reginald Guinness , were Bro . Lord and Lady Ashbourne and Bro . General Lord Wolseley and Lady Wolseley . The ceremony was performed by Bro . Lord Plunket , the Archbishop of Dublin .

Sir Philip le Belward Grey-Egerton , of Oulton Park , Cheshire , died in London on Wednesday , after a long illness . He was 5 S years of age . The deceased Baronet was formerly a Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards , and was in the Crimean War . He succeeded to the Cheshire estates on the death of his father in 1 SS 1 . He is succeeded by his eldest son , Mr . Philip Henry Brian Egerton , who was born in 1864 .

Mr . Ferdinand Praeger , the pianist , died on Wednesday morning at his residence in Shepherd's Bush , after a long and painful illness . The son of a violinist in Leipsic , he was born in January , 1815 , and came to London in 1 S 34 . He v / as a . protege of Hummel , and a friend of Spohr and Schumann , whose musical journal he represented in London . Mr . Praeger was well known in the Metropolis as a teacher , lecturer , and composer .

The installation of the W . M . of the Pentalpha Lodge ( Victoria Constitution ; took place at the lodge rooms , Kew , on the 24 th June last . The W . M . elect , Bro . Edwin James Lees , P . G . S . B ., was installed by Bro . Charles J . Davidson , P . P . B . G . P ., assisted by Bro . H . A . Derham , P . G . S . At the close of the ceremony the newly-installed W . M . presented the I . P . M ., Bro . H . A . Derham , with a Pentalpha jewel , subscribed for by the brethren as a token of their esteem . After the ceremony a banquet was held .

On the 20 th ult . the corner-stone of the Bishop Jolly Memorial Church , Fraserburgh , was laid with Masonic ceremony by Bro . Lord Saltoun . At the conclusion of a very impressive ceremony , conducted by the Bishop of Aberdeen , the clergy , choir , and leading members of the congregation proceeded to Philorth House , where they were hospitably entertained by Bro . Lord and Lady Saltoun . The church is estimated to cost with the tower £ 4200 , of which about £ 3000 has already been secured .

A reception of the delegates attending the ninth International Congress ot Orientalists was held at the premises of the Royal Society of Literature on Monday , and the formal opening of the Congress took place on Tuesday morning , the proceedings commencing with an address . The charge of receiving the visitors devolving on Bro . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) , who is Chairman of the Organising and Reception Committee . An excursion will be made to Cambridge and a number of papers will be read , the Congress closing this ( Friday ) day week .

Bro . the Duke of Portland laid the foundation-stone of Thurso Harbour on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., and also opened a bazaar promoted for the purpose of raising funds for the extension of the public library and museum of the town . The streets were gaily decked for the occasion . His Grace was received at the railway station by the Town Council , magistrates , and some of the leading inhabitants , and by the Volunteers and brethren . A large crowd assembled along the route from the station to the hall , where the Duke was " affiliated" to the local lodge , and then proceeded to the harbour , where he laid the foundation-stone in the presence of a large concourse of people . Afterwards he was entertained at a banquet at the Royal Hotel .

The Doric Lodge of Instruction resumed its meetings at the Moorgate Tavern on Wednesday at 8 p . m . Particulars to be had of Bro . E . E . Pearson , Hon . Sec . The authorities of the German Exhibition have arranged that for the rest of the time it is open the Exhibition shall commence at » a . m . and close at n p . m .

Prince Henry of Prussia , brother of the Emperor of Germany , and grandson of the Queen , and Princess Henry of Prussia have arrived at Kiel on their return from their recent visit to this country . An International Meteorological Congress was opened in the city of Munich towards the close of last month , and many distinguished professors from Sweden , Spain , Norway , and other countries took part in the proceedings .

Bro . Lord Mayor Sir Joseph Savory , Bart ., and the Lady Mayoress , Sir William and Lady Farmer , Sir Richard and Lady Couch , and Bro . Alderman and Mrs . Evans have been staying at the Marine Hotel , North Berwick . The British Mediterranean Squadron , under the command of Admiral Sir A . Hoskins , met with a very friendly

reception during its visit to Barcelona , the Barcelona Club in particular giving a garden party in its honour . The officers of the 19 th Hussars were entertained at dinner at Limmer ' s Hotel , St . James ' s , on the 2 Sth ult ., previous to their departure for India , by the colonel of the regiment , Lieut .-General Coote Hutchinson , and other former officers of the regiment .

The number of members belonging to the Society for the Protection of Birds is now stated to be 950 , and the Duchess of Portland is its President . Its object is to protect birds from the enormous destruction which has been wrought amongst them for millinery purposes .

The Duke of Connaught embarked on board the Royal yacht Victoria and Albert , for Portland , on a tour of inspection , on Friday , the 2 Sth ult ., and the day following he visited Parkhurst , Isle of Wight . His Royal Highness has since gone on leave of absence .

The funeral of Bro . Henry Cecil Raikes , the Postmaster-General , took place on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., in the churchyard of St . Mary ' s , Mold , in the presence of a very large concourse of friends and admirers , there being also present a number of the brethren of Lodge No . 1477 .

The Commander-in-Chief has decided that the 2 nd Battalion Grenadier Guards , which has been quartered at Dover since its return from Bermuda , shall be moved to London during the present month , and resume its place on the Guards' ordinary roster for duty .

The Queen has been pleased to issue a Royal Commission empowering the Council of the Society of Arts to obtain and distribute information relating - to the forthcoming Exhibition at Chicago , so that the productions of the United Kingdom and the Colonies and Dependencies of the British Crown may be adequately represented .

The Prince of Wales has appointed Bro . the Earl of Limerick to be Director of the Ambulance Department of the Order of the Hospital of St . John of Jerusalem in this country . We understand that since the opening of the last winter session over 2 S , ooo first aid and nursing certificates have been issued .

The funeral of the fourth and last Duke of Cleveland took place in Staindrop Churchyard , near Darlington , on Friday , the 2 Sth ult ., and among those present were the Earl of Durham , the Marquis of Londonderry , Bro . Sir Hedworth Williamson , Bart ., and about 400 tenants of the late nobleman .

A morning concert was given at Swansea in aid of a local hospital on the 2 Sth ult . by Madame Adelina Patti , who was assisted by Madame Antoinette Sterling and other artistes of eminence . The reception of the Diva was most enthusiastic , and a vote of thanks was passed to her by acclamation . The sum of £ 900 was realised for the charity .

According to the 187 th annual report of the Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty , a sum of ^ 20 , 200 was distributed during the past year among the poorer livings of the Church of England . The number of grants making up this sum was 80 , of which 21 were to clergymen whose livings were under £ 100 a year , 28 to those under £ 150 , 20 to those under £ 175 , and 11 to those under £ 200 .

Bro . Lieut .-General Sir Evelyn Wood has found it necessary , in consequence of the recent heavy rains and the muddy state of the ground , to postpone the army manoeuvres which were to have begun this week . According to the present arrangements , the First Division march to

Woolmer on the 10 th inst ., the day following to East Meon , and on the 12 th to Soberton , while the Second Division will march to Woolmer on the nth inst ., and on the 12 th to East Meon , thus reaching their first manoeuvring points in time to commence operations on the 14 th inst .

The funeral of the late Waterloo veteran , General Whichcote , who died on the 26 th ult . in the 97 th year of his age , took place in Meriden Churchyard on Monday . A party of the deceased's late regiment ( 52 nd Light Infantry ) was present , in addition to the family and other mourners ,

while among the wreaths placed on the coffin were those sent by the officers of the 52 nd Regiment and 4 th Dragoon Guards , Sir Thomas Whichcote , and the Marquis of Exeter . Both the Queen and Duke of Cambridge sent telegrams of sympathy to the relatives of the late officer .

The Princess Louise ( Marchioness of Lome ) visited Kendal on the 27 th ult ., for the purpose of opening an Industrial , Art , Crafts , and Loan Exhibition . The streets and public buildings were gaily decorated , and the people gave her Royal Highness a most enthusiastic greeting . The

ceremony having been carried out , a vote of thanks was passed to her Royal Highness for her kindness in presiding on the occasion . An illuminated address was also presented to her by the Mayor ( Bro . George J . McKay ) and Corporation .

The Crystal Palace Electrical Exhibition , to be opened on the 1 st ofjanuary next , has received the sanction of the Board of Trade , and isduly certified as an International Exhibition , under the provisions of the Patents , Designs , and Trade Marks Act , 1 SS 3 . The exhibits of her Majesty's Government will include historical telegraphic and electrical apparatus , instruments , and appliances , as well as the modern apparatus and instruments now in use in the Postal Telegraph Department . This exhibit will be arranged under the direction of Mr . W . H . Preece .

Upwards of a million persons have already visited the German Exhibition at Earl ' s Court . The new Bishops of Lichfield , Truro , Zululand , and Coventry will be consecrated in Westminster Abbey on Michaelmas Day , the 29 th inst . The Comte de Paris has sent 12 brace of grouse for the use of the patients of the French Hospital and Dispensary , Shaftesbury-avenue .

The bazaar which was recently opened at Dunkeld by the Duchess of Rutland in aid of the Young Men ' s Provident Institution realised £ 680 . Towards theend of the present month the Empress of Austria will take a sea voyage to Miramare , whence she will proceed to Constantinople and make a stay of a few days there .

Among those who accepted the invitation to be present at the Master Cutlers' Feast at Sheffield on Thursday were Bros . Sir Edward Watkin , Bart ., M . P ., Sir Augustus Harris , and R . Stuart-Wortley , M . P . At a meeting of the Glasgow magistrates held on Wednesday it was resolved to recommend to the Town Council that the freedom of Glasgow be conferred upon the Marquis of Bute when he goes to the city to open the new library .

The Duke of Connaught carefully inspected the 16 th Hussars as they embarked at Portsmouth on board the Euphrates , which sailed on Wednesday for Bombay and thus inaugurated the Indian trooping season 1 S 91-92 . Bro . Lord and Lady Brassey gave a garden party at Normanhurst on the 27 th ult . to the subscribers to the wedding present which was made to them by the townsfolk of Hastings . Though the weather was very unfavourable , there was a large gathering .

Among those present at the annual Highland Games at Osborne on Wednesday were Bro . SirW . Cunliffe Brooks , Bart ., M . P ., and Lady Brooks , the Marquis and Marchioness of Huntley , Bro . Admiral Sir E . Commerell , Sir George Wombwell , Bart ., and others .

The number and tonnage of British vessels respecting whose loss reports were received at the Board of Trade during the month of August , and the number of lives lost are as follows : Sailing , 29 ; tonnage , 439 6 ; lives lost , 34 . Steam , eight ; tonnage , 54 S 9 ; lives lost , five .

The Duke of Cambridge inspected at Aldershot , on Wednesday , the troops to the number of about 15 , 000 , which are about to take part in the approaching autumn manoeuvres , with between 4000 and 5000 that are already encamped at Woolmer and Moen .

Dr . Durnford , the Bishop of Chichester , left for the Italian lakes on Monday , his first resting place being Monte Generoso . His lordship , who will be accompanied by Archdeacon Mount , will remain abroad till shortly before the meeting of the diocesan conference in October .

M . Cartigny , the last French survivor of Trafalgar , had a dinner given to him at Hyeres on Tuesday , his 101 st birthday . The Minister of Marine and Admiral Duperre telegraphed congratulations , the latter remarking that , notwithstanding the fate of arms , the French Navy was proud of Trafalgar .

According to a telegram from Halifax , Nova Scotia , the British steamer Dunmurry , from New York for Antwerp , with a cargo of grain , capsized during a hurricane on the 29 th ult ., and sank . The first officer and seven men were drowned , while the captain and 20 other hands , after being tossed about in the lifeboat for three days without food or water , were picked up by a German vessel and landed at Halifax .

The value of the personal estate of the late Sir Patrick MacChombiach Colquhoun , of the Temple , Q . C , who died on the iSth May last , has been sworn at £ 9424 . His will has been proved by the executrix , his daughter , Lady Redhouse . The testator bequeaths his Leander presentation

cup to the Secretary for the time being of the Leander Club , and he bequeaths to St . John ' s College , Cambridge , his Lady Margaret two-handed cup , trusting that it will be used in each year on the 6 th May and 27 th December at least .

At the Liverpool Police Court , the other day , before Mr . Kinghorn , deputy stipendiary magistrate , it came out in the course of cross-examination of a witness in a trivial case of theft , that one of them , a young negro , had been sometime ago charged with stealing a lady ' s satchel , in which was a box of Beecham ' s Pills . On looking at the box , and seeing

on it that they were " worth a guinea a box , " be proceeded to take them , and notwithstanding that several of his friends implored him to let them have one or two , he swallowed the contents of the box . The fine healthy appearance of the witness showed that the pills most certainly must have agreed with him .

The marriage of Mr . Charles Isham , son of Mr . Bradley Isham , of New York , with Miss Mary Lincoln , eldest daughter of Mr . Robert Lincoln , the American Minister ( and granddaughter of the late President Lincoln ) , was solemnised on Wednesday afternoon in Holy Trinity Church , Brompton . The bride was given away by her father . Major J . C . Post , the Military Attache to the Legation ,

discharged the duties of best man ; there were no bridesmaids or pages . The service was conducted by the Ven . Archdeacon Farrar , assisted by the Rev . J . M . Baldwin , and was choral . The wedding party subsequently reassembled at 2 , Cromwell-houses , where Mrs .. Lincoln held a small reception , and later in the afternoon Mr . and Mrs .

Charles Isham left for the honeymoon . Among those who witnessed the marriage were the Netherlands Minister , the Danish Minister and Madame de Bille , Mr . Henry White ( United States Legation ) , the United States Naval Attache and Mrs . and Miss Emory , Senator Higgins ( United States ) , Marshal Field ( Chicago ) , General and Mrs . A reception of the delegates attending the ninth International Congress ot Orientalists was held at the premises of the Royal Society of Literature on Monday , and the formal opening of the Congress took place on Tuesday morning , the proceedings commencing with an address . The charge of receiving the visitors devolving on Bro . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) , who is Chairman of the Organising and Reception Committee . An excursion will be made to Cambridge and a number of papers will be read , the Congress closing this ( Friday ) day week .

Bro . the Duke of Portland laid the foundation-stone of Thurso Harbour on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., and also opened a bazaar promoted for the purpose of raising funds for the extension of the public library and museum of the town . The streets were gaily decked for the occasion . His Grace was received at the railway station by the Town Council , magistrates , and some of the leading inhabitants , and by the Volunteers and brethren . A large crowd assembled along the route from the station to the hall , where the Duke was " affiliated" to the local lodge , and then proceeded to the harbour , where he laid the foundation-stone in the presence of a large concourse of people . Afterwards he was entertained at a banquet at the Royal Hotel .

Prince Henry of Prussia , brother of the Emperor of Germany , and grandson of the Queen , and Princess Henry of Prussia have arrived at Kiel on their return from their recent visit to this country . An International Meteorological Congress was opened in the city of Munich towards the close of last month , and many distinguished professors from Sweden , Spain , Norway , and other countries took part in the proceedings .

Bro . Lord Mayor Sir Joseph Savory , Bart ., and the Lady Mayoress , Sir William and Lady Farmer , Sir Richard and Lady Couch , and Bro . Alderman and Mrs . Evans have been staying at the Marine Hotel , North Berwick . The British Mediterranean Squadron , under the command of Admiral Sir A . Hoskins , met with a very friendly

reception during its visit to Barcelona , the Barcelona Club in particular giving a garden party in its honour . The officers of the 19 th Hussars were entertained at dinner at Limmer ' s Hotel , St . James ' s , on the 2 Sth ult ., previous to their departure for India , by the colonel of the regiment , Lieut .-General Coote Hutchinson , and other former officers of the regiment .

The number of members belonging to the Society for the Protection of Birds is now stated to be 950 , and the Duchess of Portland is its President . Its object is to protect birds from the enormous destruction which has been wrought amongst them for millinery purposes .

The Duke of Connaught embarked on board the Royal yacht Victoria and Albert , for Portland , on a tour of inspection , on Friday , the 2 Sth ult ., and the day following he visited Parkhurst , Isle of Wight . His Royal Highness has since gone on leave of absence .

The funeral of Bro . Henry Cecil Raikes , the Postmaster-General , took place on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., in the churchyard of St . Mary ' s , Mold , in the presence of a very large concourse of friends and admirers , there being also present a number of the brethren of Lodge No . 1477 .

The Commander-in-Chief has decided that the 2 nd Battalion Grenadier Guards , which has been quartered at Dover since its return from Bermuda , shall be moved to London during the present month , and resume its place on the Guards' ordinary roster for duty .

The Queen has been pleased to issue a Royal Commission empowering the Council of the Society of Arts to obtain and distribute information relating - to the forthcoming Exhibition at Chicago , so that the productions of the United Kingdom and the Colonies and Dependencies of the British Crown may be adequately represented .

The Prince of Wales has appointed Bro . the Earl of Limerick to be Director of the Ambulance Department of the Order of the Hospital of St . John of Jerusalem in this country . The funeral of the fourth and last Duke of Cleveland took place in Staindrop Churchyard , near Darlington , on Friday , the 2 Sth ult ., and among those present were the Earl of Durham , the Marquis of Londonderry , Bro . A morning concert was given at Swansea in aid of a local hospital on the 2 Sth ult . by Madame Adelina Patti , who was assisted by Madame Antoinette Sterling and other artistes of eminence . The reception of the Diva was most enthusiastic , and a vote of thanks was passed to her by acclamation . The sum of £ 900 was realised for the charity .

According to the 187 th annual report of the Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty , a sum of ^ 20 , 200 was distributed during the past year among the poorer livings of the Church of England . The number of grants making up this sum was 80 , of which 21 were to clergymen whose livings were under £ 100 a year , 28 to those under £ 150 , 20 to those under £ 175 , and 11 to those under £ 200 .

Bro . Lieut .-General Sir Evelyn Wood has found it necessary , in consequence of the recent heavy rains and the muddy state of the ground , to postpone the army manoeuvres which were to have begun this week . According to the present arrangements , the First Division march to

Woolmer on the 10 th inst ., the day following to East Meon , and on the 12 th to Soberton , while the Second Division will march to Woolmer on the nth inst ., and on the 12 th to East Meon , thus reaching their first manoeuvring points in time to commence operations on the 14 th inst .

The funeral of the late Waterloo veteran , General Whichcote , who died on the 26 th ult . in the 97 th year of his age , took place in Meriden Churchyard on Monday . A party of the deceased's late regiment ( 52 nd Light Infantry ) was present , in addition to the family and other mourners ,

while among the wreaths placed on the coffin were those sent by the officers of the 52 nd Regiment and 4 th Dragoon Guards , Sir Thomas Whichcote , and the Marquis of Exeter . Both the Queen and Duke of Cambridge sent telegrams of sympathy to the relatives of the late officer .

The Princess Louise ( Marchioness of Lome ) visited Kendal on the 27 th ult ., for the purpose of opening an Industrial , Art , Crafts , and Loan Exhibition . The streets and public buildings were gaily decorated , and the people gave her Royal Highness a most enthusiastic greeting . The

ceremony having been carried out , a vote of thanks was passed to her Royal Highness for her kindness in presiding on the occasion . An illuminated address was also presented to her by the Mayor ( Bro . George J . McKay ) and Corporation .

The Crystal Palace Electrical Exhibition , to be opened on the 1 st ofjanuary next , has received the sanction of the Board of Trade , and isduly certified as an International Exhibition , under the provisions of the Patents , Designs , and Trade Marks Act , 1 SS 3 . The exhibits of her Majesty's Government will include historical telegraphic and electrical apparatus , instruments , and appliances , as well as the modern apparatus and instruments now in use in the Postal Telegraph Department . This exhibit will be arranged under the direction of Mr . W . H . Preece .

The bazaar which was recently opened at Dunkeld by the Duchess of Rutland in aid of the Young Men ' s Provident Institution realised £ 680 . Towards theend of the present month the Empress of Austria will take a sea voyage to Miramare , whence she will proceed to Constantinople and make a stay of a few days there .

Among those who accepted the invitation to be present at the Master Cutlers' Feast at Sheffield on Thursday were Bros . Sir Edward Watkin , Bart ., M . P ., Sir Augustus Harris , and R . Stuart-Wortley , M . P . At a meeting of the Glasgow magistrates held on Wednesday it was resolved to recommend to the Town Council that the freedom of Glasgow be conferred upon the Marquis of Bute when he goes to the city to open the new library .

M . Cartigny , the last French survivor of Trafalgar , had a dinner given to him at Hyeres on Tuesday , his 101 st birthday . According to a telegram from Halifax , Nova Scotia , the British steamer Dunmurry , from New York for Antwerp , with a cargo of grain , capsized during a hurricane on the 29 th ult ., and sank . The first officer and seven men were drowned , while the captain and 20 other hands , after being tossed about in the lifeboat for three days without food or water , were picked up by a German vessel and landed at Halifax .

The value of the personal estate of the late Sir Patrick MacChombiach Colquhoun , of the Temple , Q . C , who died on the iSth May last , has been sworn at £ 9424 . His will has been proved by the executrix , his daughter , Lady Redhouse . The testator bequeaths his Leander presentation

cup to the Secretary for the time being of the Leander Club , and he bequeaths to St . John ' s College , Cambridge , his Lady Margaret two-handed cup , trusting that it will be used in each year on the 6 th May and 27 th December at least .

At the Liverpool Police Court , the other day , before Mr . Kinghorn , deputy stipendiary magistrate , it came out in the course of cross-examination of a witness in a trivial case of theft , that one of them , a young negro , had been sometime ago charged with stealing a lady ' s satchel , in which was a box of Beecham ' s Pills . On looking at the box , and seeing

on it that they were " worth a guinea a box , " be proceeded to take them , and notwithstanding that several of his friends implored him to let them have one or two , he swallowed the contents of the box . The fine healthy appearance of the witness showed that the pills most certainly must have agreed with him .
