The ACTING GRAND MASTER , after the usual premary exercises had been disposed of , delivered his nnua ] address , at the commencement of which he weired to the late Sir Knights MacLeod Moore and Anderson in the following terms : "The past year has

Great Priory Of Canada.

been fraught with sadness for Canadian Templars . Within the short space of a few months our first Grand Master and his successor have both passed away , full of years and honours , and we are left lamenting their absence . The names of MacLeod Moore and James A . Henderson have been so long as household words

with all Templars in Canada that it is difficult to realise the fact that they are no longer with us , that we will no more hear their words of wisdom , that we will no more clasp their hands in fraternal affection , or enjoy their beloved companionship in our annual conclaves . It was their privilege to have possessed

for a lengthened period the love , esteem , and respect of all their brethren in no ordinary degree , and it was our good fortune to have had the benefit of their extensive knowledge and experience . They were both earnest and enthusiastic Templars , and freely devoted their time and their energies for the welfare of our

beloved Order in Canada . In the will of the Almighty Father of the Universe they have been in due time called to their eternal home . May they rest in peace , and may we emulate their virtues . At our special conclave , held in Hamilton , in October last , M . E . Frater Henderson was elected in his absence

to the supreme position in the Order , and he was installed shortly afterwards at his own home in Kingston by R . E . Frater S . F . Matthews , the Provincial Prior of New Brunswick . Our Grand Master died on the 7 th of December following , and I thereupon ordered the issue of the annexed circular :

The Chancery of the Order , "' Barrie , Ont ., 15 th December , 1890 . " ' To the Knights Templars of Canada : " ' Fratres , —It is with the most profound regret that we have to announce to you the death of our dearlyloved and esteemed Most Eminent and Supreme Grand

Master , James A . Henderson , Q . C , LL . D ., which occurred at his home in Kingston on the 7 th instant . Following so closely upon our loss of Grand Master MacLeod Moore , the blow falls with redoubled force , and we are left to lament the decease of both our leaders , fratres who have been for many years foremost

in our thoughts and affections , who have guided the destinies of our beloved Order ever since its revival in the Dominion , who were ever active and untiring in their efforts to advance our interests , and who held the very highest place in the love and esteem of all our members . Their memories will for ever remain fresh

and unsullied in our hearts , and we will endeavour to profit by the lessons of their noble lives and to copy their manifold virtues . As a mark of respect it is directed that the banners of the preceptories shall be draped in mourning for the space of three months , and joining with you in all heartfelt sympathy , we remain , yours in the bonds of the Order ,

" * Hv . ROBERTSON , D . G . M ., " ' Acting Grand Master . "' Attest . " ' D . SPRY , Grand Chancellor . ' " " The Masonic career of Most Eminent Frater James Alexander Henderson , Q . C , D . C . L ., was long and

eventful , and to give it in full detail would be almost like writing a history of Masonry in this province . He assisted at the formation of the Ancient Grand Lodge of Canada ; he was present at the union of the two Grand Lodges ; he was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge for two years ; he assisted Colonel Moore in

establishing Templary in Canada , and he was actively concerned in „ every Masonic movement here for 40 years . He was initiated in 1843 , and was Master of his lodge as long ago as 1847 . He was District Deputy Grand Master in 1862 , Deputy Grand Master in 18 77 and 1878 , and Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of

Canada in 18 79 and 1880 . In Royal Arch Masonry he was Grand Superintendent in 1862 . He was installed as a Knight Templar in 1854 , Deputy Provincial Grand Commander in 1855 , Provincial Prior in 1873 , Great Sub-Prior and Deputy Grand Master from 18 79 to 1890 , and received the crowning glory of his Masonic

life by his unanimous election as Most Eminent and Supreme Grand Master of the Sovereign Great Priory of Canada in October , 1890 . He was a thorough Mason , and deli ghted in aiding Masonic students from his vast stores of Masonic knowledge . He was an earnest and devout Christian , and very prominent in

Church work and in all benevolent and charitable undertakings . He was most genial and kindly in his disposition , and won his way to the affection and esteem of all who knew him b y his many personal qualities . He was a man of great ability , holding many public positions of trust and importance , and withal of a

modest and unassuming demeanour . We will ever hold his memory in the deepest respect . The statutes of the Order providing that the Deputy Grand Master during any vacancy in the office of Supreme Grand Master should have and exercise all his powers , I was called to assume the position of acting Grand Master ,

and I have now to give you an account of the most important matters in relation to the Great Priory which have claimed my attention since that time . " As regards the state of the Order , he said : "I am pleased to be able to inform you that from the reports I have received and from my personal observation , the Order of the Temple in Canada has been making steady and

substantial progress . There is an increase in the number of preceptories , an increase in the number of members , and an increase in the funds . Greater interest is being taken in the Order , and better work is being done than in former years . These are matters for congratulation , and great credit is due to the Ri g ht Eminent the Provincial Priors and other officers for their services in assisting in so desirable a consummation . The

Great Priory Of Canada.

Chancery of the Order , in the able hands of our R . E . Frater Daniel Spry , is all that it should be , well and carefully managed , and the business attended to with promptness and exactitude . I desire to publicly acknowledge my indebtedness to him for valuable assistance in the performance of my duties . The statements which will be laid before you by the Grand Treasurer will show that the financial condition of the Great

Priory is very satisfactory . We are able to meet all our engagements and have a substantial balance on hand . " Other matters of local interest having been dealt with , the address was concluded . The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows :

Frater Henry Robertson , Q . C , LL . B .... S . G . M . „ E . T . Malone D . G . M . „ Daniel Spry ... ... ... G . Chancellor ,, Rev . S . Bates G . Chaplain . ,, R . McGuire G . Constable . „ C . A . Knowles ... G . Marshal . ,, David McLellan G . Treasurer . „ O . S . Hillman G . Registrar .

Provincial Priors : Fratres D . F . McWatt , Toronto District ; C . A . Humber , London District ; J . A . Angel , Hamilton District ; J . Greenfield , Kingston District ; W . H . Whyte , Quebec District ; S . F . Matthews , New Brunswick District ; J . W . Ruhland , Nova Scotia District ; and A . R . Milne , British Columbia District . Grand Council elected : Fratres J . Ross Robertson , J . S . Dewar , E . E . Sheppard , E . A . Dalley , and Samuel Dubber .

ANNUAL OUTING OF THE HAMER LODGE , No . 1393 .

The annual outing of the Hamer Lodge , No . 1393 , was held on Wednesday , the 26 th ult ., when the brethren , with their wives and friends , numbering about 50 , left the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , in wellappointed waggonettes for Aughton , near Ormskirk .

Dedication Of A Masonic Hall At Fivemiletown.

DEDICATION OF A MASONIC HALL AT FIVEMILETOWN .

Some two years ago we chronicled the foundation of the Border Lodge , No . 482 , at Fivemiletown . Progress has since been the order of the day in the quarter . A very large number of members have been added to the roll from month to month , until now in this respect the Border can compare favourably with most lodges

connected with the Province of Tyrone and Fermanagh . Originally the brethren met in the Courthouse , but a project was set on foot a year ago for the purchase of a disused preaching house from the Methodist Body . We are glad to be able to announce that success has crowned the efforts of this infant lodge . On Monday ,

the 17 th inst ., the dedication of the new hall took place with the usual interesting circumstances , the deputation from the Provincial Grand Lodge consisting of Bros . Rev . J . W . Montray , P . M . ; Rev . L . Richards , P . M . ; and J . W . Ellison Macartney , P . M . Luncheon was served at the Hotel at one o ' clock .

Immediately afterwards took place the ceremony of consecration , when the above officers were assisted by Bros . Rev . E . Frank Naylor , W . M . 482 ; Hugh Bracken , S . W . ; James Hall , J . W . ; J . A . Smith , S . D . ; George Martin , acting J . D . ; G . Young , I . G . ; Rev . Wm . Hannah , Sec . ; and William Ellison

Macartney , P . M . The members of No . 482 are to be congratulated on the possession of a handsome and comfortable hall . In fact few lodges in country towns can boast of better quarters . We must certainly confess , however , that

the success of the Border has been well earned by the energy and enterprise of the brethren belonging to it . The exercise of these qualities has made Masonry a . power in the neighbourhood of Fivemiletown , and we look forward with confidence to a prosperous career of Masonic usefulness for the members of No . 482 .

It has been announced in Rome that King Humbert will visit England next year , and that the Italian Fleet will also 1 visit our shores .
