We deeply regret to hear that Bro . Sir Daniel Gooch , Bart ., Prov . Grand Master of Berks and Bucks , Chairman

0 f the Great Western Railway , is lying dangerously ill at his residence , Clcwes Park , near Windsor . The half-yearly election of children to the Merchant Seamen's Orphan Asylum took place at the Cannon-street Hotel , on Monday , when eight out of a list of eleven girls , and twelve out of a list of 29 boys were elected .

The Langton Lodge of Instruction , No . 1673 , which works strictly according to Emulation , will resume work on Thursday , the 10 th inst ., at the usual place and hour , viz ., the White Hart Tavern , Abcburch-lane , E . C , at 5 . 30 p . m . At the banquet which is to given to Bro . the Earl ot Carnarvon at Leeds on Wednesday next , the 9 th inst ., Bro . W . K . J ackson , M . P ., the Financial Secretary to the Treasury , will be present among the principal guests .

We are pleased to notice that the Metropolitan Chapter of Improvement commenced its session on Tuesday , the 1 st inst ., at the White Hart , corner of Abchurch-lane and Cannon-street , E . C . It w-ill continue to meet every Tuesday at 6 . 30 until the end of May .

Comp . F . Hilton , P . Z ., Preceptor , will rehearse the ceremony of installation of M . E . Z ., by special request , at the Star Chapter of Instruction , at 7 . 30 ., this ( Friday ) evening . Bro . Lord Suffield has arrived at his bouse in Chesterfieldstreet from Gunton . The Provincial Grand Master of North Wales , Bro . Lord Harlech , has summoned a Provincial Grand Lodge , to be held at Barmouth , on the 22 nd inst .

Bro . Sir J . Somers Vine arrived at Plymouth on the 27 th ult . from his visit to the colonies , whither he has been on behalf of the Imperial Institute . Bro . the Earl and Countess Cowper have arrived ^ at Panshanger , Herts , after concluding their visit to the Earl of North ' brook at Torloisk , Isle of Mull .

At a recent public meeting in Glasgow the Princess Louise , Marchioness of Lome , was elected President of the Glasgow Branch of the Scottish Home Industries . Bro . the Duke of Fife has contradicted the rumour that it is his intention to buy an estate in England . He does not intend to do so , at all events for the present .

The Duchess of Albany has consented to distribute tbe prizes and certificates to the successful students at the Birkbeck Scientific and Literary Institute , on the 14 th November . Bro . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) has appointed Mr . Robert Melville , Q . C ., of the South Eastern Circuit , County Court Judge for District No . 27 .

The Admiralty has given authority for the well-known song , "A Life on the Ocean Wave , " by the veteran Bro . Henry Russell , to be the special march of the corps of Royal Marines . On Friday , the 27 th ult ., the Speaker of the House of Commons presided at the Town Hall , Leamington , and presented the certificates gained by the students at the recent Oxford University Extension Lectures .

Bro . the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon have been this week visiting their estates in the neighbourhood of Nottingham and at Teversall and Blackwell , near Mansfield . Next week they go to Bretby Park , near Burton-on-Trent . It is stated that the Duke and Duchess of Fife will shortly pay a visit to the Duke and Duchess of Buccleugh at Drumlanrig Castle , Dumfriesshire , where members of the Royal Family have been frequently entertained in past times .

The Stuart Lodge of Instruction , No . 16 32 , has removed to " The Moorgate , " Finsbury-pavement , and the first meeting will be held on Thursday , the 10 th October . It will continue to meet on every succeeding Thursday , at 7 o ' clock .

Bro . H . A . Brassey , who formerly represented the now disfranchised borough of Sandwich , has sailed from Liverpool for America . It is said that Bro . Brassey will be a Unionist candidate for one of the divisions of Kent at the next general election .

It has been decided that Prince Albert Victor of Wales shall extend his visit to Burmah , the newly-acquired territory of the Empress-Queen , This will so considerably prolong the trip that his Royal Highness will not be able to return to England for at ' east six months .

The new Agricultural Department has been temporarily installed at the offices of the Land Commissioners , 3 , St . James ' s-square , but for the present the records of the old Agricultural Department of the Privy Council will remain in Whitehall . The new Department is already completely organised .

Sir Edgar Boehm s Wellington statue at Hyde Parkcorner was finished on Wednesday by the . addition on the east side of the pedestal of the dates 17 69-1852 , the birth and death years of the great Duke . The preparations for his funeral—by far the most splendid and remarkable in the long reign of the Queen—in the latter year occupied

more than two months , and while the death occurred , somewhat suddenly , on September 14 th , the burial in St . Paul's did not take place until November iS . Anotherand a much older—memorial has also this week received a final touch . The Monument , which showed signs of weakness last year , was repaired at much cost by the City Corporation .

The Prince of Wales , accompanied by his sons , Princes Albert Victor and George , left Marlborough House for Port Victoria on Saturday evening last On their arrival , they embarked immediately on the Zealand Company ' s new steamer Deutschland , for Flushing , whence they continued their journey , via . Hamburg and Copenhagen , for Fredensborg , where they will spend a fortnight with the Princess of

Wales and the Danish Royal Family . Ihey will then leave for Athens to be present at the marriage of the Duke of Sparta with the Princess Sophie of Prussia . After that event they will leave Athens , Prince Albert Victor going on his proposed visit to India , while it is probable the Prince and Princess of Wales will take Rome and Florence on their way home , where they are expected about the 21 st November ..

At St . Luke's Church , Uxbridge-road , on the 24 th ult ., was celebrated the marriage of Mr . James Henry Ibbitson , of Leeds , to Amy , only daughter of Bro . Henry Purdue , P . M ., Sec . S 34 , '/ .. S 34 , of Orchard-road , Shepherd ' s Bush . The bride wore a rich white satin and brocaded dress , trimmed with orange blossom , and a long tulle veil , fastened with a spray of same , and was attended by her

niece and two sisters of the bridegroom as bridesmaids . The service was rendered in a most impressive manner by the Rev . St . Hill Bourne , who afterwards attended the breakfast , and proposed " The Health of the Bride and Bridegroom " in most suitable terms . Mr . Gilbert , a friend of the bride , presided at the organ , and played the wedding

march in a masterly manner . The happy couple left in the evening for the Continent . In spite of the unpropitious state of the weather , there was a large gathering of the friends of the bride and bridegroom , many coming from a great distance . The presents were very numerous , and of a costly description .

Lord George Hamilton has promised to open a new Conservative Club at Bramley , West Yorkshire , early next month . The Hospital Sunday Fund has now reached £ 41 , 600 , and is just £ 1000 in excess of the collection made in any previous year . The fund for 1 SS 9 closes on Oct . 31 .

Professor Hunter , M . P ., is laid up at Gliou with a severe attack of inflammation ot the lungs . He has for some time been travelling in Switzerland for the benefit of his health , which has latterly been the cause of great anxiety to his friends .

The Provincial Grand Master of East Lancashire , Bro . Col . Le Gendrc Nicholas Starkie , has fixed the consecration of the St . Martin ' s Lodge , No . 2320—being the 99 th lodge in the province—for Wednesday , the 23 rd inst ., at Castleton , near Rochdale .

Bro . James Lowther , M . P ., has accepted the Mastership of the Thanet Harriers , with a Committee to assist him . This well-known pack commences its 121 st season by . a meet at Strode Park , Heme , the seat of Mr . Charles Prescott-Westcar , on Tuesday next . The Lord Mayor elect , Bro . Alderman Sir Henry Isaacs , has appointed the Rev . Robert Henry Hadden , B . A ., vicar

of St . Botolph , Bishopsgate , to be his chaplain , and Mr . William Jameson Soulsby , barrister-at-law , of the Middle Temple , to be his private secretary during his year of office . Mr . Soulsby has filled the same position in the 14 preceding mayoralties . It has been officially announced in India that the

forthcoming tour of Prince Albert Victor is to be regarded as one of a private character . No presents will be received and none given . The whole of the arrangements for his tour are in the hands of Col . Sir E . Bradford , who accompanied the Prince of Wales in his tour in India , and who now goes out with Prince Albert Victor as the chief of his staff .

The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Mark Lodge of Lancashire , and the consecration of the Perseverance Lodge , No . 403 , has been fixed by the Prov . Grand Mark Master , Bro . the Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom , for Monday , the 21 st inst ., at Blackburn—this being the first Mark lodge in this part of the province—when Bro . Dr . Gregson will be installed as the first W . M .

In the person of Mr . William Mason , who died on Wednesday , at the age of S 9 , London loses the last survivor of the Charleys who used to patrol the streets prior to the establishment in 1 S 49 of the City Police Force . Another fact of interest is that as beadle to Alderman Finnis he assisted in the Lord Mayor's Show of 1 S 56—the last occasion on which the pageant proceeded to Westminster by water . — Citv Press .

THE VOLUNTEER C HAJ . LEXGE TROPHY . —The Lord Mayor , on Wednesday , intimated to Quartermaster Gratwicke , adjutant of the English Twenty , that he will be happy to become the custodian of the Volunteer National Challenge Trophy , won by England at the last Wimbledon meeting . The trophy will be received by the Lord Mayor on November 5 , and " on the same evening his lordship will entertain Col . Burt , the captain of the team , and the members of the English Twenty at dinner at the Mansion House .

THE PASTEUR INSTITUTE . —On Wednesday , three more patients—a man and two boys—who had been bitten by a rabid dog at Rugby , were sent to Paris to be treated at the Institut Pasteur at the expense of the Lord Mayor's Fund . This makes a total of 2 S persons sent from that source

during the last three months . Of these , eight were persons living in London , and the remainder in the provinces . The Mansion House Fund now amounts to over £ 2000 , some considerable donations having recently been received from Fellows of the Royal Society , among whom a collection s being made .

The new Sheriffs of London , Alderman Knill and Bro . W . H . Harris , were sworn in as Sheriffs of London at Guildhall , on Saturday last . In the afternoon , after Divine service at the Church of St . Lawrence , Bro . the Lord Mayor , the Sheriffs , many of the Aldermen and Common

Councillors , and others were present at a Common Hall in Guildhall , when Bro . Alderman Sir Henry Isaacs was elected Lord Mayor for the ensuing year , returning thanks for the honour done him . A vote of thanks to Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead for his services during the past year was also passed , and duly acknowledged by his lordship .

The death is recorded of Lady Milne , wife of Admiral Sir Alexander Milne , of Inveresk , Midlothian , who succumbed to the influence of " gas" in a dentist's shop in Edinburgh , where she had gone , in company with her husband and daughter , in order to have a tooth extracted . After the administration of the anaesthetic she never

recovered consciousness , the cause of death being presumably due to weakness of the heart . The deceased lady was the daughter of the late Mr . Archibald Cochran , of Ashkirk , Roxburgh , and in 1 S 50 was married to Captain Milne , distinguished subsequently by his services in the Crimean War .

The Prince of Wales will , it is understood , visit Egypt at the end of this month . His Royal Highness will take the opportunity of going there in the Royal yacht Osborne after the wedding of the Duke of Sparta and Princess Sophie of Prussia at Athens , and will probably take leave of Prince Albert Victor at Port Said on the latterjoiningthe Peninsular and Oriental Company ' s steamer Oceana for India . It is

contemplated that the Prince will make a somewhat long stay , during which he will review the British and Egyptian troops in Egypt proper , and also visit some of the recent battlefields— Tel-el-Kebir , & c . THE VOLUNTEER C HAJ . LEXGE TROPHY . —The Lord Mayor , on Wednesday , intimated to Quartermaster Gratwicke , adjutant of the English Twenty , that he will be happy to become the custodian of the Volunteer National Challenge Trophy , won by England at the last Wimbledon meeting . The trophy will be received by the Lord Mayor on November 5 , and " on the same evening his lordship will entertain Col . Burt , the captain of the team , and the members of the English Twenty at dinner at the Mansion House .

THE PASTEUR INSTITUTE . —On Wednesday , three more patients—a man and two boys—who had been bitten by a rabid dog at Rugby , were sent to Paris to be treated at the Institut Pasteur at the expense of the Lord Mayor's Fund . This makes a total of 2 S persons sent from that source

during the last three months . Of these , eight were persons living in London , and the remainder in the provinces . The Mansion House Fund now amounts to over £ 2000 , some considerable donations having recently been received from Fellows of the Royal Society , among whom a collection s being made .

The new Sheriffs of London , Alderman Knill and Bro . W . H . Harris , were sworn in as Sheriffs of London at Guildhall , on Saturday last . In the afternoon , after Divine service at the Church of St . Lawrence , Bro . the Lord Mayor , the Sheriffs , many of the Aldermen and Common

Councillors , and others were present at a Common Hall in Guildhall , when Bro . Alderman Sir Henry Isaacs was elected Lord Mayor for the ensuing year , returning thanks for the honour done him . A vote of thanks to Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead for his services during the past year was also passed , and duly acknowledged by his lordship .

The death is recorded of Lady Milne , wife of Admiral Sir Alexander Milne , of Inveresk , Midlothian , who succumbed to the influence of " gas" in a dentist's shop in Edinburgh , where she had gone , in company with her husband and daughter , in order to have a tooth extracted . After the administration of the anaesthetic she never

recovered consciousness , the cause of death being presumably due to weakness of the heart . The deceased lady was the daughter of the late Mr . Archibald Cochran , of Ashkirk , Roxburgh , and in 1 S 50 was married to Captain Milne , distinguished subsequently by his services in the Crimean War .

The Prince of Wales will , it is understood , visit Egypt at the end of this month . His Royal Highness will take the opportunity of going there in the Royal yacht Osborne after the wedding of the Duke of Sparta and Princess Sophie of Prussia at Athens , and will probably take leave of Prince Albert Victor at Port Said on the latterjoiningthe Peninsular and Oriental Company ' s steamer Oceana for India . It is

contemplated that the Prince will make a somewhat long stay , during which he will review the British and Egyptian troops in Egypt proper , and also visit some of the recent battlefields— Tel-el-Kebir , & c .
