In the afternoon of the 2 nd day of November , 1 SS 0 , a party of gentlemen sat in a room on Tremontstreet , overlooking Boston Common , indulging in friendly conversation , which included among the topics discussed the result of the Presidental election . The question of the personal appearance of James A . Garfield was raised , which one of the gentlemen answered by saying that he had seen him in Washington on a certain occasionand

, proceeded to describe him by comparison with another of the party , saying that the President elect was the taller . This description not being satisfactory it was decided to ascertain the facts , and a secretary was selected to do the work . The gentlemen interested , all Masons , and , indeed , all Past Masters , were : Albert A . Folsom , John L . Stevenson , Albert L . Richarnson , Samuel Creech , jun ., John H . Lakin , Thomas Watermanand Alfred F . Chapmanthe

, , last being secretary . Accordingly , on November 4 th , a brief note was sent to Mentor , Ohio , making enquiry , and in due time the writer received a cabinet photograph portrait , with thc familiar and well-known signature , "J . A . Garfield , " at the bottom , and on the back the desired information , as follows : "Height , 5 ft . 113-4 i" - > weight 210 lbs ,, 1 age 49 . " Ihe envelope bears the inscription " West I Mentor , Ohio , Nov . 16 th , 1 SS 0 . " It is needless to add

that thc portrait was pleasantly commented 011 by all interested , and that the genial character , who amid the trial and turmoil of political cares could thus turn aside to gratify a friendly curiosity , incited a warmer glow of affection for him in their breasts , and a deeper personal sorrow at his death . The portrait is now among our choicest treasures and prized beyond expression . — The Liberal Freemason .
