exception to the records of past ceremonies of the kind . No one who has ever accepted an invite to assist at an Orpheus gathering would fail to attend a second time when opportunity offered ; and to the fact that prodigious hospitality is coupled with the most refined music—to say nothing of the perfect working , which is an intellectual treat—is due perhaps to the large assembly of visiting

brethren at the meeting under notice . The lodge met at the Holborn Restaurant , and was opened by the Worshipful Master , Bro . Henry Guy , who was supported by Bros . Walmsley Little , S . W . ; W . S . Hoyte , J . W . ; H . Parker , S . D . ; F . Cambridge , J . D . ; D . Strong , I . G . ; and Potter , Tyler . The P . M . ' s present were 8 n > s . G . F . Smith , iun .. whose proficiency in the working had been well displayed in his upward progress . He was presented in the prescribed form by Bro . Willey , P . M . Surrey , that of the J . W . On the re-admission of thebrethren below the

rank of Installed Master , the customary salutes were given to the new W . M ., behind whose chair was raised a handsome banner , perceived for the first time . Bro . J . C . Frost was at theorgan , and materially enhanced the effect of the proceedings . Bro . Willey acted most admirably as Director of Ceremonies . The three charges were given by Bro . F . G . Smith , P . M ., Bro . J . Hodges , P . M .,

and Bro . Willey , P . M ., in their respective order , and it was proved that rust had not yet settled upon those who worthily filled the chair of the Orpheus Lodge in years past . The W . M . appointed and invested his officers as follows : Bros . H Walmsley Little , S . W . ; H . Parker , J . W . ; F . Cambridge , S . D . ; D . Strong , J . D . ; VV . Clifford , P . M ., Sec . ; J . Blyth , P . M ., Treas . ; Rainham , I . G . ; R . Clowes ,

P . M ., D . C ; J . C . Frost , Org . ; Rev . W . Stainer , Chap . , Marples . Stewd . ; and Potter , P . M ., Tyler . Bro . Clifford then drew the attention of the brethren to the handsome banner behind the Master's chair , which he said was the gift of the W . M ., Bro . Hoyte , to the lodge on his installation . On the motion of the Secretary , it was ordered that a record of the gift , with a vote of thanks to the donor , be entered

upon the minutes . The report of the Audit Committee , which had been sent to every brother , was taken as read , and when the Secretary read out what communications he had received , the newly-appointed S . D . expressed his willingness to representee lodge at the next Girls' Festival . The other Stewardships will be seltled at the next meeting . The W . M . then presented the I . P . M . with a jewel in

commemoration of his year of office , and as a token of the regard in which he is held by the brethren over whom he had so well ruled during the past 12 months . Three applications for relief were presented , and a grant was made to one . The others were referred to the Grand Secretary . A volley of "Hearty good wishes" followed , and among those who rose was Bro . Williams , P . M . 219 , 1264 ,

P . P . A . G . D . C . West Lancashire , who being on a visit to the Metropolis had sought admission . The brother was cordially received , and kindly invited by the W . M . to partake of the hospitality of the lodge . When the company assembled in the banqueting room nearly 70 seats were occupied , and a recherche repast was served in a style worthy of the reputation of the establishment .

In approaching the toast list , after a grand rendering of "Non Nobis" by the whole company , the W . M . said he should follow the custom of the lodge by being brief in his remarks , as they all knew what a musical treat was in store for them . After the first two toasts on the list , which every Mason knows full well , Bro . Bywater , G . S . B ., and Bro . West , P . G . D ., D . P . G . M . Surrey , were called on to

respond for " The Grand Officers . " Bro . West said it gave him peculiar pleasure to see his friend , Bro . Hoyte , in the chair , for he was one of his officers in the Province of Surrey . He noticed also that the Orpheus Lodge had another Surrey brother in office , Bro . Cambridge , S . D ., P . P . G . O . Surrey , and he hoped his province might long continue to be a happy hunting ground for the Orpheus .

The Health of the W . M . " was given in a very telling manner by Bro . Guy , and Bro . Hoyte was received with genuine enthusiasm when he rose to acknowledge the toast . He said that his predecessor had said many pleasant things of him , and he only hoped he might be able to carry out What Bro . Guy had uttered . It would be his earnest endeavour to carry out the duties of the office in a way which should add lustre to

a position that had been held by eminent brethren before him . In giving "The I . P . M ., " the Worshipful Master said he entertained the highest esteem for Bro . Guy , who had carried out the duties of the office most admirably . Bro . Guy was grateful to the W . M . for his kind reference to him , and assured the brethren that if he had

failed in any particular it was not due to want of heart in Masonry but to want of ability . This last reference was met with a general negative . Br ° - Joyce Murray , P . M ., a highly esteemed member of thelodge , made an eloquent reply to "Prosperity to the Craft , and the Orpheus Lodge especially , " and it was mentioned by the W . M . that Bro . Murray had only missed

one meeting since the lodge was founded . Special reference was made by that worthy brother to the Benevolent Fund of the Iodge ( now £ 140 ) and also to the three great Charities of the Order . Bros . Lewis-Thomas , Dr . Lott , and Williams replied wr " The Visitors , " who numbered about one-half of the company . Bro . Williams said they had an Apollo Lodge at Liver-Pool , and he thought perhaps the Orpheus was a kind of

offshoot . He thanked the W . M . for his courteous reception of him that night , for he was quite a stranger save in the "P ^ 0 *' ' * P romlsec ' warm greeting to any member of No . 1706 if he would visit him at the Apollo or the Mariners in Liverpool . Bros . Willey and Hodges replied for "The Past Mas-TV . an < * soon after the list was cIosed ' n the usual way . t he music given during the evening , under the direction ° t Bro . John Hodges , P . was an old one by Dr . Clarke of Cambridge , " It is the roar of Teviot ' s Tide . " This excited great interest , being quite new to many present . It was splendidly rendered by Bros . Hodges , Guy , Gilby , and Bell , with Bro . F . G . Smith at the piano . A splendid exhibition of pianoforte playing was given by Bro . Parker , J . W ., P . P . G . O . Essex , who by request , gave Liszt's " Lucia . " As a compliment to the

W . M ., Bro . Saunders , conductor of the music at the Holborn Restaurant , asked to be allowed to give a performance of a minuet and trio , the composition of Bro . Hoyte . This was played by the full band in a way which did full justice to the composer's ideas , and the applause was so great at its cloje that a second piece , for strings only , was given in addition . Bro . Saunders was invited to lake a

seat by the W . M ., who then expressed the gratification it had given him when the request was made . He complimented the band on the perfect rendering of his music , and called on the brethren to join in a bumper to the Health of the Conductor and every member of the Holborn Restaurant Band . The installation of Bro . Hoyte will long be remembered by everyone present , and this sketch may fitly

close with the lines which Bro . Hodges had printed on his music programme : — " An Orpheus ' . an Orpheus ! yes , Faith may grow bold , And take to herself all the wonders of old ; — Near the stately Pantheon you'll meet with the same In the street that from Oxford has borrowed its name . His station is there ; and he works on the crowd , He sways them with harmony merry and loud .

M ., Sec . 172 ; Slade , and Williams .

The lodge was opened in due form , the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . The Auditor's report was presented and adopted . The W . M . then proceeded with the ceremony of the evening , the installation of Bro . Thomas Cross , P . M ., W . M . elect , which was performed in a most perfect and impressive manner by the retiring W . M . After being installed the W . M . invested

his officers , giving each the usual address . Bros . J . Easterbrook , M . A ., S . W . ; John O'Connell , J . W . ; Rev . W . Benham , B . D ., Chap . ; Rev . J . Henry Smith , I . P . Catling , Stwds . The I . P . M . then gave the addresses in a highly impressive manner . One candidate was proposed for initiation . After " Hearty good wishes " to the W . M ., and for the prosperity of the lodge , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent repast provided at the Holborn Restaurant .

At the banquet the usual Masonic toasts were given and received with great heartiness . The college grace " Non Nobis" was sung by the brethren with very fine effect . In proposing the toast of the "Queen and Craft , " the W . M . said Masons were loyal subjects , and their regard for her Majesty as the Sovereign of this country was

further augmented , as far as the Craft were concerned , by the fact that her eldest son H . R . H . the Prince of Wales is the M . W . G . M ., another is P . G . M . of Sussex , and a third the lamented Duke of Albany , was P . G . M . of Oxfordshire . Besides , she is Patroness of the Masonic Institutions , which alone would entitle her to their esteem . After the toast had been drunk with enthusiasm , Bro .

O Connell sang "God save the Oueen . " The toast of "The M . W . G . M . " was received with great applause . The W . M . said H . R . H . the G . M ., always took great interest in things Masonic , and used his great and powerful influence in its behalf . " God bless the Prince of Wales , " was sung by Bro . R . I . Hennings .

The toast of "The Grand Officers" was given and heartily received . The toast of " The W . M . "was received with great favour . The I . P . M ., Bro . Rev . J . Henry Smith , said in proposing this toast that the lodge had much to thank the W . M . for , inasmuch as it was through his energy and perseverance that it owed its existence . The Worshipful Master , in responding , said he felt the

great honour done him by electing him to the highest office in the Iodge . He also felt it was a great responsibility , and although he had to follow so excellent a Master as Bro . Smith , P . M ., he would endeavour to carry out his duties satisfactorily to the Iodge . He reminded the brethren that , although much had been done in the past year , much remained to be done to set the Iodge on a sure foundation of prosperity ; but he hoped with their assistance to continue in the safe path laid down by the first Master , Bro . Smith , P _ M

The Worshipful Master then proposed the toast of " The I . P . M ., " and said the lodge had been very fortunate in securing so excellent a brother and so able a financier as their I . P . M . He had not only done his work admirably , but had brought the lodge to the end of the first year of its existence with a small balance in hand . That was an achievement rarely accomplished . In appreciation of his services the lodge had voted him a P . M . ' s jewel , and he had

great pleasure in now presenting it to him ; indeed , it was to him a peculiar pleasure , inasmuch as they had worked together in bringing about the formation of the lodge . He wished him long life and happiness , and hoped he might be many years amongst them , and wear the beautiful jewel in that lodge and other Masonic assemblies . The toast was received in such a thoroughly hearty and vociferous manner that must have been very pleasing to the I . P . M .

The Immediate Past Master thanked them all for their kindness , and said he should treasure that handsome jewel as long as he lived . He trusted also that after it had pleased the G . A . O . T . U . to remove him from this sublunary sphere , and he had gone over to the "great majority , " it would be treasured by his son , who he hoped would in due time become a member of the Iodge .

In giving the toast of "The Visitors , " the Worshipful Master said that , although they had not many visitors , those then present were brethren of rank and position in their respective lodges . Bro . King was a P . M . and Sec . of 172 ; Bro . Slade was W . M . of 1347 ; and Bro . Williams was S . W . of his mother lodge . They were ahvays pleased to see visitors , and trusted they had enjoyed themselves , and

would come again . These brethren expressed themselves extremely pleased with their visit on the auspicious occasion , and wished prosperity to the lodge and a successful year of office to the W . M . In proposing " The Officers " the Worshipful Master praised them for their zeal and efficiency in the past year , trusting they would assist him as satisfactorily as they had the first Master . The Senior Warden responded , and said 4 iey were

pleased at their re-election , and they would do their work in the coming year as carefully and efficiently as they had in the past . After the Tyler ' s toast a very pleasant evening was brought to a close . The pleasures of the evening were enhanced by songs by Bros . Rev . J . H . Smith , G . H . Heathcote , J . R . Hennings , J . R . Phillips , G . VV . Stevens , and J . O'Connell . Several glees were sung , this lodge being specially favoured with trained musical brethren .

were read from Bros . Brackstone Baker and C . Corby , the latter being unable to attend owing to a severe domestic affliction . The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . Bro . B . J . Somers was raised to the Degree of M . M ., and Bro . John Allen passed to the second Degree . On the motion of Bro . G . Lambert , acting W . M ., seconded by Bro . G . Reynolds , Sec , Bros . T . J . Shryock , M . W . G .

Master Maryland , U . S . A ., and C . E . Meyer , P . M . 295 , Pennsylvania , U . S . A ., were unanimously elected honorary members , and the Secretary was instructed to communicate this resolution to them , accompanied with a jewel of the lodge . Bro . Theodore H . Tilton , in a few well-chosen words , returned thanks on behalf of Bros . Shryock and Meyer . A vote of condolence was also passed to Bro . C .

Corby in his bereavement in the loss of his wife . The following brethren were unanimously elected joining members of this lodge : Bros . Major J . Woodall Woodall , P . G . Treas . ; 1 . Zacharie , P . G . M . California ; C . F . Beatcy , 2 , New York City , U . S . A . ; and George Kenning , 249 , P . M . 192 and 1657 , P . G . D . Middx ., Proprietor Freemason . Ail Masonic business having been

transacted , the lodge was closed in ancient form . An excellent banquet was served in the Princes Room , under the personal superintendence of Bro . G . P . Bertini , and ample justice was done to the good things placed before them . Bro . G . Lambert , P . G . Swd . Br ., presided at the banquet table in the absence of the W . M ., and gave the toasts in a most cheery way . " The Queen and the Craft , " and " H . R . H . the Prince

of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " were first given , and received by the brethren with enthusiasm . Bro . G . Lambert next gave " The Grand Officers , " who he said were men who had done good work in Masonry , and who should be looked upon as the guardians ot the landmarks of their Order , they were proud to have one as their Chaplain .

Bro . Rev . J . Studholme Brownrigg , P . G . Chap ., with whose name this toast was coupled , in his usual humorous manner thanked the brethren for the hearty way in which the toast had been given and received , and trusted the Grand Officers would alway merit their approbation . In rising to propose "The Health of their VV . M ., " Bro . G . Lambert said he was unable to be present with

them that evening as he was at a Masonic dinner at the Mansion House , where he was quite sure things did not go so easy as with them . If their Masonic father had been at the table he would have responded to the toast of the actual Master , who was the English representative of 19 Grand Lodges in America , and the only person in England who represented so many . The founders were periectly

right m placing that brother in the chair as first W . M . of the Anglo-American Lodge , as no one he knew was more fitted than him for that position , they also knew him well in connection with the Charities , and as one who supported them liberally . Bro . T . H . Tilton , in proposing the toast of "Ths I . P . M . " said they were always glad to see him present as

he was a host in himself . At the last meeting he had the honour of entertaining the G . M . of Maryland , Bro . Shryock , and Bro . Meyer , of Philadelphia , who had expressed themselves highly gratified with what they had seen and heard ; they had found in this lodge a Masonic home for brethren from the other side of the Atlantic who

previously had not known what to do in this village of ours , ihey expressed their intention of coming over again , when their worthy I . P . M . would introduce them to some of our civic banquets . He was the connecting link between this and the other side of the water , and he considered it an honour to have so eminent a Mason as their I . P . M . He asked them to drink his health , Bro . G . Lambert , in replying , said : He was proud of the

M . for his courteous reception of him that night , for he was quite a stranger save in the "P ^ 0 *' ' * P romlsec ' warm greeting to any member of No . 1706 if he would visit him at the Apollo or the Mariners in Liverpool . was an old one by Dr .
